Re: [Tn5250j-general] 0.7.5 version

2015-02-25 Thread Michael D. Setzer II
Just as an additional. CR LF problem also exist on a Apple MAC.
Had a student bring in their MAC notebook, and installed just fine, but when
running the tn5250j script it got the script error about ^M in script. Not that
familiar with MAC, so I uploaded file to my linux box, and used dos2unix, and
then just downloaded it. MAC didn't have dos2unix, and wasn't aware of
another method to do it, but afterwards it did come up.

One of my students just told me there was a new version.
Seems to work fine, but think she ran into the permissions issue in creating
the directory with windows 7. I've seen this before where it will not allow
 the
default options. Sometimes I've changed it to using c:\tn5250j and it works,
but sometimes that also fails, but going to the command prompt and creatign
the directory has always worked. She will bring notebook in next class.

With installation on Fedora 20 linux the issue of the script file being in
 DOS
format CF LF instead of unix format causes a failure, but just running
dos2unix fixes that issue. Know some versions don't have an issue with
scripts having the DOS formation, but Fedora doesn't like it.

The SDA issue in Bug 185 is still there with 0.7.5, but since it wasn't
mentioned in the readme assumed that it had not been resolved yet.

[Tn5250j-general] Issues with install on 7 and 8.x

2014-09-28 Thread Michael D. Setzer II
In the past had seen issues were the install tries to install in Program
Files(s)
directory, and it fails. Then tried to install in C:\tn5250j, and it fails to
create,
but one can open a DOS prompt, and md\tn5250j and then it will create with
the message that directory already exists, but goes thru.

The other night had a student with a Windows 8 notebook, and it had the
same issues. Got it installed, but then found that the (+) field exit key kept
popping up some windows thing. Also, various F-keys were also bring up
windows 8 things?? I'm using Linux on my machines, and my classroom is
dual Fedora 20 and Windows 7 that doesn't seem to have this issues.

Ended up setting field exit to use Ctrl-X and then using the keypad for
function keys.

Anyone else figured out options for running on installing and running on
Windows 7 and above.

 Hi,
In the past had seen issues were the install tries to install in
 Program Files(s)

it fails to create, but one can open a DOS prompt, and md\tn5250j
and then it will create with the message that directory already
  exists, but goes thru.

Since Windows Vista, Microsoft enabled User Access Control (UAC)
feature by default. UAC requires administrative rights, when
 installing in folder Program Files.
The easiest way to run the installer.jar as administrator is via
command shell. See Microsoft documentation for details:
 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc947813(v=WS.10).aspx
 Within this admin-console type:
 java -jar tn5250j-0.7.4-installer.jar

Question is that the user id that was logged in was administrator type
account. Also, why it didn't prompt that the action required the prompt for the
permissions like many programs do.

Also, don't know why it wouldn't let the installer create the C:\tn5250j
directory, but opening a regular (non-administrator) would allow for creating
the same directory, and then the installer would continue with the message
that the directory already existed.

Again, that isn't the big issue, since it can be gotten around, but would be
nice if you could just download and run the installer in one step as worked in
XP and before. The issue is with the new keys being mapped with windows
8. Didn't see the issue with Linux, Windows pre 8, and Macs.

Seeing more students with systems with 8.x, and this is the second one that I
have seen with the same issues.

I don't have a W8 machine or access too. Just got new machines in January
replacing the previous 7 year old machines we had. They came with 7, since
the MIS was not prepared to even think of supporting 8. I added Fedora 20,
and use it as the default OS.

 Best regards
 Martin

[Tn5250j-general] Question on the new 0.7.4 versions ABOUT

2014-08-10 Thread Michael D. Setzer II
Just got back from Summer Break, and saw the new version.
Did a test install on a classroom machine to test before doing other updates.
The ABOUT shows 0.7.3? Did a search of code for 0.7.3 or 0.7.4 and
couldn't find either.

 Michael,

It is built from the latest SF project files. I need to do some more complete
 testing and then set a
valid version on the release but basically what I have at my site is what
 you could build from the
SF project files. If you have concerns about the validity of the file, you
 could just check out the
files from SF and build them yourself. I think the SF files carry a different
 versioning because the
ant build files haven't been updated but the code that is compiled and
 deployed is current.

I have no concern of your code, it is just that the files on the sourceforge
site
are dated 2005-06-19? There are some messages on SVN file modification,
but no forum sections? I've added your program in addition to the already
TN5250 options that I have on the Windows and Linux dual boot systems.
There are a lot of little things that I like. The only problem that I've run
into is
that the print-screen comes up with a message that no prointer is defined.
Don't know if that is some missing Java modual or a difference in the
version of Linux Used. I currently have Fedora 12 running.

Just wasn't clear on if there was any dialog going on behind the scenes with
the project, or you had just taken it on? Several years ago, I did a similar
thing with the G4L project that been left dormant. I made my own updates
and made them available on my site, and posted things in the forums,
Eventually I ended up getting update support on the sourceforge and
freshmeat sites, and have put out about 18 update version...

Thanks for the note. Program looks good.
