RE: PLEASE REMOVE THE VIRUS BEFORE MAILING THE LIST...
Lasse When you say list signature do you mean this: To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Troubles with the list: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] If so, then I think the real issue is, Why's the signature there in the first place?. Mailing list management commands are well documented. There's a problem with email in general in that it's easy to fire off an email without giving the content much thought or structure. I'm no fan of Outlook or Microsoft for that matter, but I rely on Outlook's life management facilities - e.g. calendar, tasks, flagging messages! One thing that does irritate me is when people put their reply to a message -within- the message - I've missed important info because of this! Example: Bla Bla Response Bla Bla When you're scanning the email, it's easy to overlook part of the reply - more so when sending as plain text (can't use colours). Removed unnecessary bits of this email to save on storage space ;) Thanks, John Quote for the week: My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. Mailing list management commands are well documented. I would encourage you to look back at the archives of this list. When the directions for unsubscription to the list is not placed in every single method there are about 5 request per day to unsubscribe an account (and every single person claims that they have followed the directions). With these footers in place that drops to about 1 per week or less. I am amazed as to how Outlook appears to have a negative impact on the quality of this list. For example, the way Outlook handles quoting encourages people to quote far more of the original message, instead of editing so that you just quote what you are commenting on. Many times I have seen the list signature repeated at least four times in one single message. I archive all mail, including lists, so THANK YOU OUTLOOK USERS for wasting my archive space. Oh well, so space is cheap; but bad quoting often means a message takes slightly longer to read - I consider that a problem on high-traffic lists such as this. -Lasse -- To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Troubles with the list: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I would like to point out that the virus was sent by members of the list. Would Virus filtering of the list be useful? Yes. Would it be cost-effective? No. (Since Jakarta has no real income to spend on this). Randy -Original Message- From: Richard S. I know this list has been talking about SPAM removal, but now it is not only annoying, but has begun to SERIOUSLY IMPACT the list. After all, if the list will not be delivered by ISPs, then it is out of business. SO PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - start instituting some serious SPAM filters, or only allow posts by members. The real problem with Virus scanners as an open source project is two fold: 1. The virus writers can look at the source code and determine new patterns that will be outside of the scanner's view (granted the script kiddies won't be able to do this, but the more advanced virus writers would) 2. All of the existing virus developers have staffs and devote resources to finding viruses before they become a problem. In an open source project a consistent effort to accomplish this would be difficult if not impossible, making usage risky. (Is it better to have a false sense of hope or no sense of hope at all?) Well, my ISP nuked your last issue of the digest (tomcat-user Digest 29 Jan 2002 07:19:31 - Issue 352) because it was emailed with the Party virus intact. Nuked your last issue? Surely the last issue?! It would be mailed intact cos the listbot doesn't strip attachments. That would seriously spoil list content. I know this list has been talking about SPAM removal, but now it is not only annoying, but has begun to SERIOUSLY IMPACT the list. After all, if the list will not be delivered by ISPs, then it is out of business. It wasn't spam, it was a virus sent on automatedly from a trawl through a MS address book. SO PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - start instituting some serious SPAM filters, or only allow posts by members. I prefer the latter (membership). Neither would help. Perhaps using proper mail clients? Yes, the real strength of an AV, today, is not the scanning engine (which is usually good), but the promptness of new virus identities being added to the current database. Nix.

I would like to point out that the virus was sent by members of the list. Would Virus filtering of the list be useful? Yes. Would it be cost-effective? No. (Since Jakarta has no real income to spend on this). AFAIK, most - if not all, components of a mail virus scanning system are for free. I'm using strong UNIX variant, but there are counterparts in Java, too. - Sendmail 8.12.x + libmilter - AMaViS, using sendmail milter - Sophos (corporate license) The last item is certainly not free and I don't believe Sophos would be so nice to give it to Jakarta for free, but I hear that Kaspersky AV on Linux has a free variant. OTOH, I have just recently heard of a Java based virus scanner OpenAntivirus was the name, IIRC. It works with the above combination, replacing Sophos. Nix.
