[SlimDevices: Touch] Couple of questions from a soon to be Touch owner
I just ordered a touch from logitech :) yay. Anyway.. I have a couple of questions.. (I'll be using the touch as a server btw, for itself and 1 SB3, with approx 20,000 tracks - about 300 Gb of FLAC and MP3) 1. Does anyone have a recommendation for a small portable HDD that comes with a psu (as the touch can't provide the required power). Seems all the 2.5 drives are exclusively bus powered. I have a 3.5 but it's a little whiney, and I dont like the idea of having to buy a powered usb hub just for a small HDD. 2. On the limitations wiki it states that FLAC encoded 48Khz and compressed with Best or -8 won't work. Does this mean if the file is over 48 Khz AND encoded at -8, or is it either condition? I have a lot of flac encoded at -8 (16/44.1, do I need to re encode all this to -5? 3. I can't seem to find what apps work on the touch.. Is there enything like superdatetime? I really like the weather forecast on the clock. oh and good work getting this out right now.. had a bad day yesterday, then Saw in stock on the logitech site.. brightened my day immeasurably :) -- craiglester craiglester's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9702 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76934 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch released or not?
Called Logitech Sales (1-800-231-7717) to inquire about the status of my preorder. The status indicator on the website shows my order is in-process - this is what it has shown for quite some time. When I reached Ben on the phone, he said the Touch has not been released and his sales manager says it won't be released until July. When I checked the Logitech web sales site earlier today, it showed the Touch was in-stock. When I looked at it while talking to Ben, it showed out-of-stock. I explained that MickyG, the program manager, just posted a release announcement for the Touch on the Slimdevices forum. Ben didn't believe me and he didn't particularly care what others at Logitech were saying. I can see the left hand still doesn't know what the right hand is up to. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Why Purchase a Touch??
There are now lots of options for streaming music from a computer or directly from a hard drive, so this is a very timely question. I originally purchased an SB3 in 2006 primarily for its Internet radio abilities. But I also experimented with using Slimserver (now Squeezeserver) to stream FLAC files from a computer on my network. I have now ripped my music collection to FLAC using XLD and have done lots of re-tagging using Sbooth's Tag. After experimenting with a direct connection from the computer to my DAC via USB, I've realized (1) that having an intermediary layer such as SS/Squeezebox allows a lot more flexibility in the control of the system (i.e. it can be controlled from any computer on the network and via iPeng), and (2) I can use my music server as a central repository of files for playback on a second system in my house. I'm looking forward to purchasing a Touch primarily for its ability to stream 24/96 files. My SB3 will then be used in my office/studio. Although there are many other good options for streaming music files, I think that - for my purposes - the squeezebox concept works well. My guess is that this stuff will mature and become much more standardized and easier to use in the near future! Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch released or not?
I think this latest confusion is just because they were trying to get it out as soon as they could. Right after 7.5 was done, someone pushed the go button and didn't tell everyone in the chain. They never really had a release date, which is why I found another solution, but I think this one came down to wait another week or so to get all the ducks in a row or just release it. Someone decided to just release it. In the end, this way is probably faster, at least for the for the pre-order folks, even if the sales side and the retail channels are now scrambling to put resources towards actually delivering the product. You have to remember that until about 48 hours ago, I don't think anyone, including their own sales staff, had any idea when this thing was going to come out. -- BrianB BrianB's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35727 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76936 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

More questions, TIA, once again: 1) Does the SB server software enable a person to access playlists (i.e., actually just links to tracks) in a music service such as MOG? I do not use Rhapsody/Napster, and would like to continue to use MOG as most of the tracks stream at 320kbps, a few at 256. 2) If the Vortebox Appliance is set up to rip CD's and tag, does the software also provide catalog/library management capabilities similar to products like JRiver Media Center or Foobar, or does it just provide for ripping and tagging of CD's? Thanks If you want to avoid another plug and power adapter, you'll want to use a 2.5 drive, most of which can be powered by the Touch's USB port. If you want a larger 3.5 drive then it must power itself. If you can, I would recommend waiting a while for feedback from other users as to which currently produced external USB drives are known work with the Touch. I was in on the beta testing and have a 2.5 drive (Apricorn) that only sometimes works. If you want to leave the USB drive attached to the Touch, the Touch will share the music folder over the network so that you can add, delete and modify music files in your library across your home network. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] New to Squeezbox/ touch need advice
Those are 2 good questions. Most current model external drives seem to be 1TB and up. Lacie models seem to be well-regarded and also look pretty. Personally, I buy a bare drive and enclosures separately. It's a good way to get some decent features, ensure you get a quality drive, and keep the price down. The only difference from buying off the shelf is that you'll also have to format it, which isn't difficult. Newegg has a ton of options. As for tools for copying, I use Grsync. It's perfect for this use: you specify a source directory and a destination directory, and it takes care of the rest. It compares the source and destination, and only copies those files that don't exist in the destination folder. -- cooppw02 cooppw02's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16712 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76953 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch released or not?
Just FYI. Logitech site says out of stock. Maybe with the release they all sold out. Just glad it's released and I got a great price ($229). I'd originally ordered on Amazon (wife got it for me for Christmas) but when someone posted two super coupons on this forum I switched my order. It's still in process. -- Dbalt Dbalt's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35859 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76936 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Why do people use -8 anymore? Large drives are readily available and cheap for that matter. And the average savings on an album between -5 and -8 is not worth the processor overhead or even the saved space on a 2TB drive. Even on a huge 2TB drive, I don't think using -8 versus -5 will save enough safe to allow one to get just one more album on the drive. Speaking of drives, if anybody is having issues or starting to see odd things, check your remaining drive space. Don't fill a drive all the way up even if its only going to be write once then read only afterwards. -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: Second Boom Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76934 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

[SlimDevices: Touch] Headphones/Touch
Does anyone know if I can leave wireless headphones connected to the Touch (and powered speakers) and switch between the two without unplugging the headphones? I would think so. Then I could just leave headphones connected all the time and turn them on when I like. -- Dbalt Dbalt's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35859 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76963 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Headphones/Touch
Plugging headphones into the headphone jack does not turn off anything else. You can have headphones, analog out and digital out all running simultaneously. The one thing you can't do is have separate volumes between them, the headphones get the same volume as the analog outs. It would be good if you could switch (via duet controller or web remote) between headphone output and other outputs, sort of like the headphone switcher app for the duet controller. -- Dbalt Dbalt's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35859 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76963 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

JJZolx;531412 Wrote: An explanation of why may be in order... Squeezebox Server running on the Touch will store its library database and its resized artwork (also a database) on the drive itself. So leave some room for these files. This is kind of a nice feature, as each drive can be considered to be an autonomous 'library'. Changing libraries is as simple as swapping disk drives. I was assuming that if you switched drives that the Touch would rescan everything on the new drive, causing delays and extra drive wear. If switching drives really works without excessive overhead and music on the new drive is available in a few seconds, I may just do that with my current USB enclosures rather than trying to build that 3.0TB USB disk array I was asking about on another thread. It does rescan when you plug in the drive, but it only looks for changes so is pretty fast when there are no or few changes. I don't think it delays the availability of the server very much. If you plug in a drive that doesn't have a library database on it yet then it does have to do an in-depth scan of all the audio files. I think maybe the library can begin to be used, though, while it's still scanning. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76934 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

The hardware can handle it, they get fed from separate ports on the processor, but I'm not sure if squeezeplay was designed for that. I think there is already an enhancement request for this. I'm pretty sure its theoretically possible to turn off the headphone output because it has to be turned off when the jack is used for IR blasting. But there is no way to turn off the analog outs AND still have signal going to the headphone jack. The same DAC chip drives both and there is no switch between the DAC and the analog outs, thus you can't turn them off. It should be possible to switch between the digital out and the headphone jack because the digital out and the DAC come from different hardware ports, but that would take some significant rewrite of squeezeplay.
