Title:
Unable to access indicators from HUD

Status in Ayatana Design:
  Confirmed
Status in Unity HUD:
  Confirmed
Status in hud package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
In Ubuntu 12.10 I was able to use HUD to access Messaging menu and Gwibber's
"Update Status" option there, making status updates to Twitter easy and fast.
I could also use HUD to change my status in Empathy from Available to Busy
and vice-versa.

In Ubuntu 13.04 Beta HUD no longer finds the "Update Status" option when
typing "Update Status" or "Update"
Also writing "Available" "Away" or "Busy" no longer gives any results.

Other indicators however are accessible and I can use HUD to Suspend
my computer or to view Skype status or Ubuntu one indicator options.

  Repeating:
  1. Press alt key to start HUD
  2. Write "Update status" or "Available"

  What was expected:
HUD should have shown options ether from Gwibber to Update Status or Empathy
to change status to Available both available from the messaging indicator.

  What happened:
  HUD didn't find any results.

  Notes:
  I have Ubuntu 13.04 Beta 64bit upgraded from Ubuntu 12.10 64bits and I'm
using proprietary fglrx drivers.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1257956] Re: Headphones stopped working after use of Audacity. They are detected, but no sound is produced.

2018-10-28 Thread Sergio
Ran into this issue with Audacity 2.2.1 on Ubuntu 18.04.
Restarting doesn't fix it. Headphones were detected but didn't work.

Steps to Fix:
* Open Audacity. Set source to "default: internal mic: 0"
* Close Audacity
* Open Audacity again. Suddenly headphones start working

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I'm running 13.10 and the latest GNOME. I've just fresh installed
everything and the problem has occured again the same way. I would
like to be able to use audacity, but I suppose in the mean time I will
  just reinstall everything.

  Steps to reproduce :
  1) Install audacity 2.0.3 from official Ubuntu repositories
  2) Open Audacity and play something with it
  3) That's it : no more headphones sound.

  - alsa log created with 'alsa-info.sh'

  - pulse log when I plug in my headphones, I run a MP3 file with VLC,
  close VLC then unplug headphones

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1800294] Re: Xorg freeze black screen hang up

2018-10-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1800120] Re: please find the solution to the display problem asap

2018-10-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The bad resolution is due to 'nomodeset' on your kernel command line.

To fix that you need to edit /etc/default/grub, remove "nomodeset" and
then run:

  sudo update-grub

and reboot.

Title:
NVHDA does not persist after Suspend or Hibernating

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Below is a Cut and paste of a recent Ubuntu Forum Page where I posted the
issues
  https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2404566
Note that though it says "Solved" it is just workarounds of Bigger ACPI
Issues!

  ubuntu 18.10

  OK,

This is a new thread, and I will make it HUGE!
Edit Solution/ Work Around for the "2/" Problem
see Post # 4, Thanks PeterSaints

  Ubuntu, Please Listen!

Nvidia, HDA WOES in the Title ... HDA stands for High Definition Audio, or
HDMI Audio, or Surround Sound 5.1-7.1 etc. ...
NVHDA stands for Nvidia HDA. Just for anyone who does not know the Jargon!

What does Work ... (and I will post ALL my Notes and Links for others below!)
1/ Everything AFTER STUPIDLY!, I need to install a Kernel PATCH! and
2/ A STUPIDLY Necessary Restart after ANY Hibernation or Suspend!

First my System, and most importantly is it is a NEW Cutting Edge Hp Omen X
Laptop with a Nvidia GTX 1080m GPU, and the latest Linux 3.18 Kernel!
  -Computer-
  Processor : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7820HK CPU @ 2.90GHz
  Memory: 16245MB (3330MB used)
  Machine Type : Notebook
  Operating System : Ubuntu 18.10
  -Display-
  Resolution: 1920x1080 pixels
OpenGL Renderer : GeForce GTX 1080/PCIe/SSE2
  X11 Vendor: The X.Org Foundation

  -Audio Devices-
Audio Adapter : HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
  Audio Adapter : HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
  -Input Devices-

  Video Bus
  ST LIS3LV02DL Accelerometer
  HDA Intel PCH Mic
  HDA Intel PCH Mic
  HDA Intel PCH Headphone
  HP WMI hotkeys
  HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm:3
  HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm:7
  HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm:8
So the LATEST 2 Problems I am looking for a SOLUTION that would indeed help
THOUSANDS and/or MILLIONS of people Now and/or in the near future!
1/ Why SHOULD I need to apply a PATCH to a YEAR old KNOWN problem!
  and MORE IMPORTANTLY!

2/ Why is the fixed Patch System NOT working after a Suspend or Hibernation
(Yes I am reiterating my issue once again!)
After EITHER a Suspend or Hibernation, the HDA Sound is EITHER,
1/ Not VISIBLE AGAIN! ANYWHERE! Trust me, or
2/ Visible but in a Dysfunctional State, ... Showing 3 version of the NVHDA
0,1&2 ...
and NONE of the 3 (three) WORK! to be clear NO SOUND AT ALL! when testing
them.

So I will leave it here, and to show my continued Good Faith and
Obvious Continued Support For Ubuntu, below are ALL my Solutions to
  Date!

  1st Solution -
Install the patch to get the INVISIBLE and/or Unloaded HDA Visible and/or
Loaded
∘ I can confirm that kernel module, posted by
  ‣ Maik Freudenberg (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75985#c27),
  • Kernel module to toggle audio function
∘ is working fine on my system. Thank you for the fix. The HDMI audio device
now works as it should (now detected).
∘ The steps I did to enable HDMI audio device:
  • 1. Download and extract the file nvhda.tar.xz. (from above link)
  • 2. Run these commands in Terminal, in the location of the extracted folder
  Code:
  • $ make
  • $ sudo make install
  • $ echo nvhda | sudo tee -a /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
  • $ echo "options nvhda load_state=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/nvhda.conf
  • $ sudo update-initramfs -u
  ‣ 3. Reboot.
  ## SOLVED ## ###

  2nd Solution
Hibernation/Suspend Working (Not HDA Sound of Course)

  Troubleshooting
  ‣ Prerequisites - does your kernel support suspend-to-disk?
  • Kernel supports whatever is listed in /sys/power/state, so:
  Code:
  cat /sys/power/state
∘ Allowed (to my knowledge) entries there include: mem, standby, freeze,
disk. Explanation:
  ‣ mem - has several meanings, which one exactly on your system you'll find
out via cat /sys/power/mem_sleep. I have: s2idle [deep]
  ‣ standby - Power-On Suspend (if supported)
  ‣ freeze - Suspend To Idle (STI)
  ‣ disk - Hibernate - Suspend To Disk (STD), This - you want.
∘ mine says : freeze mem disk - PERFECT!

  • Then we need to check
  Code:
  $ cat /sys/power/disk
  ‣ If (good) shows ...
  ‣ [platform] shutdown reboot suspend test_resume

  • if : (Bad)
  • [disabled]
  • (not very good)
  ‣ Enable Hibernate and put it in menu - Easy-Peasy

  • Software Prerequisites
  Code:
  sudo apt install pm-utils cpufrequtils
  1. Edit a specific file with this command.
  Code:
   sudo gedit
/var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d/com.ubuntu.desktop.pkla
∘ 2. Scroll down the Text

Not sure what happened, but this is a major regression and needs to be fixed.
Note that this isn't the same as the bug with Timidity taking exclusive
soundcard access
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1797714) as I don't

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1800358] Re: ubuntu xenial crashes after exiting any fullscreen

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1783452] Re: Some font glyphs are rendered incorrectly (with additional vertical spacing) in GTK applications

2018-10-28 Thread Oleg
I added another screenshot that shows how to easily reproduce this issue
using pango-view utility.

It also shows the difference in rendering between 16.04 and 18.04.

** Attachment added: "Screenshot demonstrating how to reproduce the issue with
pango-view"

Title:
Some font glyphs are rendered incorrectly (with additional vertical
  spacing) in GTK applications

Status in gtk+2.0 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After switching from 16.04 to 18.04 I noticed that fonts are now (in
18.04) rendered differently in GTK+ apps.

For example, there is a vertical bar charcter `│`
[U+2502](https://unicode-table.com/en/2502), that is used extensively to create
solid vertical lines using just text characters.
You can see it in console apps such as `mc` or `pstree`.
While it is rendered correctly in Terminal in both 16.04 and 18.04, when
rendered inside GTK apps it has unexpected vertical gap in-between characters
on 18.04 (16.04 renders it correctly).
The issue can be seen in GTK apps such as gVIM, Geany, GEdit, but Qt apps
seem to render it properly.

I have attached a screenshot that clearly demonstrates the difference.
It shows brand new Ubuntu 16.04 on a left side where you can see
vertical line in GEdit is completely solid, as it should be. On a
right side it shows Ubuntu 18.04 where you can see line now has gaps
  that should not be there.

I built a small GTK2 test app that reproduces the problem (sources at
https://pastebin.com/WCH1ds4P), and using it I found that the problem
occurs when libfreetype 2.8+ is used. I tested FreeType 2.6, 2.7,
2.7.1 and all of them work fine. While 2.8 and above has this gap.

I am not 100% sure if this is an Ubuntu font configuration issue, or
bug in FreeType, or GTK or some other Ubuntu components, but I hope
someone at least can point me at the right direction.

Please also check my post on AskUbuntu which has additional detail and
  screenshots: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1054779/incorrect-font-
  glyphs-rendering-in-gtk-applications-in-ubuntu-18-04

Alt-f3 does the same to the third and so on. I expected alt-f2 to open

I'm pretty sure that my keyboard is not malfunctioning as I can use
all my applications normally. (Pressing O and Ctrl-O do not have the

I'm not sure which package I should file this bug against. I'll

dhcp-range for static ranges is

dhcp-range=,static,..

ie, there's only one address before the static keyword.

As soon as I activate one of the last lines, dnsmasq refuses to start with
the error msg that the range was incorrect, although there is no overlap in
range, nor is the range incorrect.
I am starting to think that this might be a bug, maybe dnsmasq cannot cope
with subnets other than /24?

  Thanks for your support!

I guess it's either wait for instructions or to downgrade as the
original poster did. I have no idea on how to downgrade.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1800210] Re: dose not work rite

2018-10-28 Thread Cristian Aravena Romero
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1800382] [NEW] package linux-image-4.15.0-38-generic 4.15.0-38.41 failed to install/upgrade: run-parts: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools exited with return code 1

2018-10-28 Thread Ethan D
Public bug reported:

Was using apt upgrade to update multiple components (I believe around
650mb) and towards the end of the installation, it was doing the headers
when the error occurred. The system running is a live-boot USB with a
4gb persistence file for storage/updates. I'm thinking this might
inherently be the issue, since further errors occurred with fstab
telling me that it was unable to determine the root device. I've never
had any issues updating headers before, but I've also never tried to
perform a header update on a USB system, so I decided to report, just in
case there is a larger issue.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1782510] Re: lightdm automatically logs in after logout

2018-10-28 Thread bastafidli
This defect may not be in lightdm package. I was just able to reproduce
it on Ubuntu 18.04.01 distribution. Here is how I did it.

I am using 18.04.01 with KDE.
I installed the skypeforlinux package
This package had unsatisfied dependency gnome-keyring as without it skype will
not log in automatically.
I installed gnome-keyring and seahorse so that I can reset the keyring.
After these three I wasn't able to logout from my KDE session as I was logged
back in.
It didn't help to uninstall skypeforlinux or seahorse.
Only after I uninstalled gnome-keyring and restarted my computer I am able to
normally logout from my KDE session.

On a side node now even after I log out, I can still see my session hanging
around using
sudo loginctl
If I log in it till create second session as reported by the above command but
at least I can logout reliably.

There's not a way to reproduce this systemically. Just open frequently the

None, the code change consists only on protecting against a null pointer

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1800328] Re: HP Office Jet Cups reports Filter Failed. Works OK with 16.04

2018-10-28 Thread brian_p
There is nothing to be done by you, but I have seen this issue appear at
least five times so it wouldn't be unreasonable to see the upgrade
process as flawed. What do you get now for

  ls -l /usr/share/ghostscript/ ?

Thanks for the feedback.

After update apt and its related library to 1.2.15 from 1.2.10ubuntu1,

what I expect to happen: apt would show the helper message
what happened instead: apt shows me the line on above

Bug description:
Since update to Cosmic, I see that bold fonts in Java have broken
rendering. See attached 400% scaled PNG for illustration. The 'r' in
bold rendering of "Hello World" shows basically a vertical line from
the end of the hook end. I am not entirely sure this is freetype issue
  but some sources (https://github.com/adobe/brackets/issues/14290)
suggest there is a bug in the 2.8.1 version that Cosmic seems to
  install (libfreetype6/cosmic,now 2.8.1-2ubuntu2 amd64 [installed]).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1800328] Re: HP Office Jet Cups reports Filter Failed. Works OK with 16.04

2018-10-28 Thread tomdean
HP Officejet Pro 8620 fails printing with filter failed message
sudo rmdir /usr/share/ghostscript/9.25/iccprofiles
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgs9-common
in cups, localhost:631, restart jobs
printed all jobs.

My issue seems to be fixed.

Does something need to be done in the upgrade process?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1800347] [NEW] Defining 2 dhcp ranges for static dhcp definition causes dnsmasq to not start - subnet other than /24 not accepted?

2018-10-28 Thread Lutz Heitmüller

#dhcp-range=192.168.114.31,192.168.114.99,static,255.255.254.0,infinite

As soon as I activate one of the last lines, dnsmasq refuses to start with the
error msg that the range was incorrect, although there is no overlap in range,
nor is the range incorrect.
I am starting to think that this might be a bug, maybe dnsmasq cannot cope with
subnets other than /24?

Thanks for your support!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1670291] Re: Landscape: Upgrade 14.04.5 to 16.04.2 fails unable to reboot

2018-10-28 Thread Damiön la Bagh
So physically at the machine it was only possible to log into the
command prompt. There is no graphical interface available.

To top it off

Network manager was stopped! Not very good for network-manager to be
stopped right after an upgrade.

sudo service network-manager restart

started the network, where I could resume fixing the computer over ssh.

sudo apt install -f

is my first course of action.

Bug description:
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/10061

  [Impact]

   * When logind is not available, shutdown command fails to schedule a
shutdown, and despite its intentions to immediately shutdown, does not
  do so.

  [Test Case]

sudo systemctl mask systemd-logind.service
sudo systemctl stop systemd-logind.service
shutdown +1

The expectation is that system goes to shutdown.

It is buggy if the system remains up - i.e. command returns to shell
  with exit code 1.

  [Regression Potential]

   * It is a corner case to run against systemd-shim logind / or logind
not otherwise available. The function still performs a clean-shutdown,
and should not cause loss of work.

  [Other Info]

   * Original bug report, running against systemd-shim/systemd-service post
trusty->xenial upgrade, pre-reboot.

Used Landscape (Paid Canonical Subscription) to upgrade one of my machines.

Landscape only shows "In Progress" for more than 8 hours now and asked
for a reboot of the machine in a second alert.

In the reboot attempt I get the message:
  =
Failed to set wall message, ignoring: Method "SetWallMessage" with signature
"sb" on interface "org.freedesktop.login1.Manager" doesn't exist
Failed to call ScheduleShutdown in logind, proceeding with immediate
shutdown: Method "ScheduleShutdown" with signature "st" on interface
"org.freedesktop.login1.Manager" doesn't exist
  =

  Steps to reproduce:
  * Fully updated 14.04.5 machine
  * Open Landscape
  * Choose the machine
  * Choose Packages
  * This computer can be upgraded to a newer release
  * Apply
  * Wait 2 hours
  * Alert comes in a seperate Landscape message Machine is ready for reboot
  * Choose Info... Power
  * Deliver to selected computers as soon as possible
  * Error message

I found this thread on reddit about this issue maybe the solution can be
built into the upgrade script

https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/4wy3go/trying_to_run_as_user_instance_but_the_system_has/

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1759836] Re: systemd-udevd consumes 100% of CPU

2018-10-28 Thread Bored Individual
Forgot the quotes around 'EOF', tested and it works for me.
Make sure you check if the service is enabled

Run the following commands:
---
cat<<'EOF'>bugfix-1759836.service
[Unit]
Description=Fix for
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1759836

[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=/bin/bash -c "services='systemd-udevd systemd-udevd-kernel.socket
systemd-udevd-control.socket';systemctl stop $services;systemctl start
$services"

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
EOF

sudo cp bugfix-1759836.service /etc/systemd/system
sudo systemctl enable bugfix-1759836.service

systemctl status bugfix-1759836.service
---
It should display something like:
  Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/bugfix-1759836.service; enabled; vendor
preset: enabled)

After a reboot again run:
systemctl status bugfix-1759836.service

Hopefully they get this fixed soon.

Ubnutu 18.04 LTS KDE Neon does not resolve local (or single name)

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Ubnutu 18.04 KDE Neon does not resolve local (or single name) queries
through DHCP assigned DNS (cached) server on local network.

  ** How to reproduce? **

  1. Let's have local network (e.g. 192.168.123.0/24) connected to the Internet
through router called GATE
  2. The GATE provides local DNS server cache (via Dnsmasq) and contains couple
of local name translations (e.g. SuperCooolLocalServer pointing to
192.168.123.50).
  3. Let's have fresh new Ubuntu 18.04 (KDE Neon)
  4. Connect to the local network through WIFI (WPA2 encrypted, jsut enter
password)

  ** What happens? **

Any desktop application trying to connect to SuperCooolLocalServer
will fail when resolving the name to IP.

When tested in terminal "host SuperCooolLocalServer" will return
  SERVFAIL.

  ** What is expected? **

The system should resolve the name SuperCooolLocalServer to
192.168.123.50 as it did until Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

  ** Observation **

The system should do the resolution in the same logic as other home
appliances running various operating systems (my iPhone, my wife's
Galaxy, ours Ubuntu 16.04LTS, Windows 7, 8.1 10 and our other network
components running various Linux based distributions.)

I did quick test and the bug shows also on clean Ubuntu 18.04 (without
  the KDE Neon flavour).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1800327] Re: local movies are broken

** Description changed:

- red, orange, and purple, I expected it to show my movie normally, I have
- installed restricted extras. My Graphics card is an rx580 8gb and cpu is

- tried opening the same video files on linux mint 19 Tara and have had no
- issues. and when i try openning them in ubuntu on wayland it just shows
- a blank screen and videos freezes. I am having these issues on 18.10

try openning them in ubuntu on wayland it just shows a blank screen and videos
freezes. I am having these issues on 18.10
+ Edit: videos work fine on VLC, so that means the default video player is
broken? because I moved from ubuntu 18.04 to LM 19 because videos didn't work
at all even on VLC, VlC just crashed and games didn't load even after fresh
install of Ubuntu 18.04, so I decided to move to LM 19, and after the new
Ubuntu update I decided to install Ubuntu 18.10 this time as a secondary OS
beside LM 19 to check if it still has that issue and once I saw that videos
looked glitched in the default video player I automatically thought It would
have the other issues too because I thought they were all related.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1670291] Re: Landscape: Upgrade 14.04.5 to 16.04.2 fails unable to reboot

2018-10-28 Thread Damiön la Bagh
Ok so this is still FUBAR but then on a higher level.

The upgrade failed miserably see the attached file.
I was able to ssh into the machine after the upgrade.
ran dpkg --reconfigure -a as suggested see below

then I tried to reboot. which was a big mistake.
when I try to reconnect to the remote machine

ssh: connect to host remotemachine port 22: No route to host

This is terrible. ssh should be like the first thing started always.
even grub should have some kind of ssh feature so if the grub menu shows
one could fix that remotely.

Now I have a unusable machine and have to go physically to the location
to try and reinstall everything by hand.

Bug description:
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/10061

  [Impact]

   * When logind is not available, shutdown command fails to schedule a
shutdown, and despite its intentions to immediately shutdown, does not
  do so.

  [Test Case]

sudo systemctl mask systemd-logind.service
sudo systemctl stop systemd-logind.service
shutdown +1

The expectation is that system goes to shutdown.

It is buggy if the system remains up - i.e. command returns to shell
  with exit code 1.

  [Regression Potential]

   * It is a corner case to run against systemd-shim logind / or logind
not otherwise available. The function still performs a clean-shutdown,
and should not cause loss of work.

  [Other Info]

   * Original bug report, running against systemd-shim/systemd-service post
trusty->xenial upgrade, pre-reboot.

  * Fully updated 14.04.5 machine
  * Open Landscape
  * Choose the machine
  * Choose Packages
  * This computer can be upgraded to a newer release
  * Apply
  * Wait 2 hours
  * Alert comes in a seperate Landscape

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1670291] Re: Landscape: Upgrade 14.04.5 to 16.04.2 fails unable to reboot

2018-10-28 Thread Damiön la Bagh
One quick little rant.

Landscape is supposed to be Enterprise Grade software. I should be able
to upgrade the releases of an entire farm of machines. This has been
broken since the first time I tried this feature with Landscape.

I found this thread on reddit about this issue maybe the solution can be
built into the upgrade script
