Bug description:
  Hi,
we had such cases in the past like bug 1817721 for bionic and maybe bug
1892130 is about the same as well. There were more but I didn't want to search
for all of them - what I checked is that there are no open ones clearly
pointing out the recent further drop in already flaky subtests.

In particular the tests "tests-in-lxd" and "systemd-fsckd" were known
to be flaky before, but got even worse.

Here stats of the last 40 runs, it might be a coincidences that this
is after 246-2ubuntu1 landed. Could as well be any other change

(I'm sure LP will make this unreadable, but is is nice in monospace)

Whatever the root cause is - the success rate of these has reduced so
much that the (even formerly questionable) practice of retry-until-
  success won't work anymore.

I have run the two tests in a local VM and systemd-fsckd works there while
tests-in-lxd seems to trip over the old flaky fellow being "boot-and-services".

We had the discussion in the past, but I think I need to again bring
up the suggestion to skip "tests-in-lxd" and "systemd-fsckd" until
they are on reasonable success rates.

Multiple-monitor Set Up Makes Mouse-pointer Jump About in 20.04

Bug description:
I have relatively recently loaded Ubuntu 20.04 to dual-boot on a
Packard Bell with Windows 10 Home 64-bit already installed. The mouse-
pointer moves and clicks perfectly when the PC has a single-monitor.
However, for work as a developer, I should like to use a dual-monitor
  setup.

The problem I have is, if I plug in to the PC tower a second monitor
and follow the steps to Connect Another Monitor To My Computer
  (https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/display-dual-
monitors.html), and after I confirm "join Display", the mouse-pointer
jumps about and a second stationary mouse-pointer appears in the
bottom right of my primary screen. This behaviour stops immediately I
confirm "Single Display", but now the second screen is now turned
  blank.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1892626] Re: Random system freeze

2020-08-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. This appears to be a crash in the 'radeon'
kernel driver.

Please try a newer kernel like
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.8.3/amd64/
and if that doesn't solve the problem then also look in the 'Additional
Drivers' app to see if your system supports the proprietary AMD driver instead.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1866194] Re: External audio device shows up in the sound output options but the sound keeps being emitted from the internal laptop speaker, or none at all.

2020-08-23 Thread John Dixon
I have the same problem. I ran Pop!_OS 20.04 from USB and the bluetooth
worked fine. And after doing a clean install, bluetooth also worked. But
when I did the initial updates, I had the same problem: device appeared
in settings and connected, but no sound. Something in the initial
updates messed things up.

Status in PulseAudio:

  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Ubuntu version: focal dev
  Kernel version: 5.4.0-14-generic #17-Ubuntu SMP Thu Feb 6 22:47:59 UTC 2020
  Pulseaudio: 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu1
  Device CID: 201704-25503

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Connect an audio interface. I tried with BT headphones and speakers as
well as a USB microphone/output.
  2. Make sure it's the one selected as "Output device"
  3. Click "Test"
-> the test sound outputs from the internal laptop speakers (NOK)
  4. Select "Speakers - Built-in Audio" as Output device and click "Test"
-> the test sound outputs from the internal laptop speakers (OK)
  5. Try to switch back to the BT device and click Test
-> same result as in step 3

Tested with 2 different BT devices (one headset and one speaker) as
well as a USB audio interface (Zoom H2N microphone).

Attached are btmon logs captured during the procedure described above,
and pactl logs capture after step 7.

I was previously using 19.04 and 19.10 on this device and never
  experienced this kind of issue.

Up to this morning, it was harder to connect the BT device, but once
connected, the sound would output on it as expected. Now, the BT
connection seems to work better, but I can't output the sound to the
  BT device...

I tried to reboot the device, and also to suspend/resume, but in each
case, the BT device can connect back, but the sound is still output
from the internal laptop speakers, even when the BT device is selected
  in the Sound settings.

Title:
[Keyboard Layouts] No actual keyboard layouts for many languages

Status in console-setup package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 20.4.1 LTS

  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources show-all-sources true
  (done)

On ubuntu, proper keyboard layouts not available for many languages. Below
few examples
  - Chinese (Available layouts: Chinese, Hanyu Pinyin(altgr)
  - Sinhala (Available layouts: US, with sinhala letters, Sinhala (phonetic)
  and many other languages

According above two examples, it's better to not add above mentioned
layouts because no useful at all.

See the windows 10, it has exact proper keyboard layouts for nearly
all popular languages. Review them and implement the same for ubuntu

Furthermore, there're huge amount of keyboard layouts available with
english characters for many languages.(eg: japanese, thai and more)
it's better remove them and basically duplicate with english keyboard
layouts (or you may able to merge into english keyboards list if
  necessary)

This is a high priority request. I also able to help if necessary.

- Add proper keyboard layouts with exact characters for all relevant languages.
- Remove english keyboard layouts from other languages that has own characters.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1891461] Re: Add proper USB audio support for Lenovo ThinkStation P620

2020-08-23 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
autopkgtests regression isn't triggered by this SRU, alsa-lib only put
the device in to S/PDIF blacklist, not behavioral change.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Lenovo ThinkStation P620 uses TRX4 board, which doesn't have PCI audio in its
chipset. Instead, it's equipped with two USB audio devices, "Main", which is
for internal speaker and front headset, and "Rear", which is for rear panel
I/Os.

However, both USB audio don't really work out of the box. Issues and
fixes will be described together below.

  [Fix for alsa-lib]
  1) Both USB audio devices don't have S/PDIF port, so we need to disable them:

https://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-lib.git;a=commit;h=464c2f8b61855cb22d61c4b232f74d6767fac5fb

  [Fix for alsa-ucm-conf]
  2) PulseAudio doesn't assign the correct stream for "Main" device, audio
output stays at "Speaker" after "Headset" is selected. So we need UCM to let
PulseAudio understand correct stream assignment.
In addition to that, in order to not let headset port availability invalidate
speaker profile, we need two UCM profiles to separate "Speaker" and "Headset"
logically:
  https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-ucm-conf/pull/42

  [Fix for PulseAudio]
  3) USB audio devices, UAC v2 and v3, support jack detection (insertion
control). However, PulseAudio doesn't monitor USB jack mixer controls, so jack
detection doesn't work at userspace level. We need to let PulseAudio be aware
those jacks:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/-/commit/e153fb870618b1dcf65f6fce1667ea76acc5a28b

  4) When a headset gets plugged, PulseAudio switches the profile from
"Speaker" to "Headset" automatically. However, when headset gets unplugged,
PulseAudio switch the profile from "Headset" to "HDMI", skipping the "Speaker"
profile. We need to fix priorities for profiles that are created from UCM to
avoid the problem:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/-/commit/dd70c3c5890ce27b9ba4bd041dea4a01c3e1fc0f

  [Test]
Under g-c-c's Sound tab, "Speaker", "Headphone", "S/PDIF", etc. profiles are
all selectable. Sound comes out from speaker even if "Headphone" is chosen.
Microphone is already selected though there's no microphone plugged.

With the above fix all applied, open Gnome Control Center -> Sound tab.
Sink "Speaker" is selected. Only "Speaker" and "HDMI" are in the drop down
menu.
Plug a headset to front port, "Headphone" and "Microphone" appears and
automatically becomes default. Unplug the headset, sink switches back to
"Speaker", and source switches to none.
Plug line-in, line-out and microphone to the rear panel, jack detection works
for all three ports, and they all work correctly. Unplug rear line-in, line-out
or microphone makes the option in dropdown menu disappears.

  On other systems, nothing changed.

  [Regression Potential]
For fix 1) and 2), The UCM in alsa-lib and alsa-ucm-conf strictly match
kernel provided profile name, so no other device will be affected.

For fix 3), if there are UAC v2/v3 devices claim to support jack detection
but don't really support it, this will make the PulseAudio consider its
availability to "no".
AFAIK, the USB audios that have jack ports are mostly docking stations, which
already have their own UCM profiles or PulseAudio profile-sets, so they are
unaffected by this change.
If we ever see this kind of regression, the proper fix is to disable jack
detection from kernel side.

For fix 4), if user depends on the old behavior (i.e. switch to
another card while other profiles are still available), this will
bring a behavioral change. However, all available profiles will still
be available after the fix, so users can still be chose the preferred
profile from the g-c-c dropdown menu.

2020-08-23 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Open GNOME Control Center's sound tab:
- USB Speaker is picked by default.
- USB Headphone and USB Mic was automatically picked as soon as headset is
plugged.
- Automatically switch back to USB Speaker when headset is unplugged.
- No useless S/PDIF profile listed.
- Jack detection works on both front panel and rear panel.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1854588] Re: gdebi-gtk calls pkexec inappropriately

2020-08-23 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
The problem is not in firefox or mate, it's in gdebi-gtk, and
specifically in GDebiGtk.py, line 619:

os.execv(pkexec_cmd, pkexec_args+gdebi_args)

This replaces the current process with a pkexec call. This is not a
valid usage of pkexec, as pkexec requires the parent process to not be
init (ppid!=1).

To reproduce the issue without firefox, one can just run `setsid gdebi-
gtk package.deb`.

In a similar bug report for update-manager (LP: #1020115), this flag was
used instead of os.execv:

flags = GObject.SPAWN_DO_NOT_REAP_CHILD
https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/update-manager/main/view/head:/UpdateManager/backend/InstallBackendSynaptic.py#L63

Is gdebi still maintained by Ubuntu developers, or should we report this in
Debian?
Can we propose a patch similar to the update manager, or even just use a simple
shell wrapper?

** Summary changed:

- Clicking 'Install' on gdebi-gtk makes it vanish ONLY when .deb opened from
Chrome/Firefox
+ gdebi-gtk calls pkexec inappropriately

** No longer affects: firefox (Ubuntu)

** Project changed: ubuntu-mate => gdebi

Title:
  gdebi-gtk calls pkexec inappropriately

Status in gdebi:
  Confirmed
Status in gdebi package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Have Ubuntu with gdebi-gtk installed
  2. Open Firefox
  3. Visit some site with deb-package download link or use direct link like
https://github.com/jgm/pandoc/releases/download/2.9.2.1/pandoc-2.9.2.1-1-amd64.deb
  4. Proceed with file downloading
  5. In Firefox select Library → Downloads, click on downloaded deb-file

  Expected results:
  * gdebi-gtk is opened, the package installs normally after users clicks
Install button

  Actual results:
  * gdebi-gtk is opened, the package is not installed because of vanishing of
gdebi-gtk window just after clicking Install button

Before anyone says this bug already exists... it doesn't (at least as
far as I can see). It's just that a lot of similar bugs do/did exist
where people have also experienced the same symptoms (of gdebi-gtk
  vanishing upon clicking 'Install').

So yes this is the same symptoms, but it must be a different cause as
the circumstances are different and doesn't have the same resolution.

  The meat of it...

Basically on a fresh install of Ubuntu MATE 18.04.3 amd64... with Firefox (or
with Chrome if you installed that) go to any site that offers a .deb package
and either...
  a) choose to open it directly from the browser (rather than saving it to
'Downloads' folder)
  b) or... save the file (e.g. to the 'Downloads' folder), BUT!.. open that
file from within the browser itself.

You should find that gdebi-gtk appears but vanishes the moment you
click 'Install' without a prompt for a password, an explanation or the
  package actually getting installed.

This bug has existed since the beginning of Ubuntu 18.04 however it's
been largely confused with other similar bugs. I've had it on half a
dozen machines and confirmed it exists with IRC users on #ubuntu-mate
  of freenode.

However with *this* bug (compared to others) gdebi-gtk works perfectly
fine if you run it from the terminal or just double click the .deb
  package from your file manager.

It's the kind of bug which if you're a hardened desktop Linux user,
  you'd just work around it...

But if you're a novice and you can't get a simple thing like
Teamviewer installed (which is a .deb, and a thing I might ask someone
to do over the phone to try to help them) you likely get fed up and
  re-install Windows :S

Any input on this would be brilliant as I can't seem to get any
  logs/output.
