[Touch-packages] [Bug 1899315] [NEW] Keyboard won't work in password entry when resuming

2020-10-10 Thread Brett Witty
Public bug reported:

If I lock my screen and return, lightdm-gtk will ask for my password,
but accepts no keyboard input. I can Ctrl-Alt-F1, log in and restart the
lightdm service which mostly solves the issue, but this is a pain to do
every time.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1373808] Re: [UX301LAA, Realtek ALC282, Black Headphone Out, Left] Microphone in headset not detected

Title:
[UX301LAA, Realtek ALC282, Black Headphone Out, Left] Microphone in
  headset not detected

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I asked my question on askubuntu.com, and it was suggested that my
problem was a bug, so reporting here.

  According to the specs

my laptop has a Microphone-in/Headphone-out jack.

I also have two different headsets, both of which works just fine as a
headset when used with my phone.

However, Ubuntu doesn't appear to recognize the headset as having a
  microphone.

Under Sound and the Output tab, the only item listed changes from
"Speakers Built-in Audio" to "Headphones Built-in Audio" when
  connected.

The input tab shows no reaction at all to the headset being connected.
It lists "Microphone Build-in Audio" and "Analog input Built-in
Audio." Both the input options clearly take audio from the computers
built in microphone, rather the headsets. Tapping the laptop gives
large spikes on the Input level indicator, while tapping the
microphone on the headset gives little to no response.

What can I do to get the headset recognized?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1891394] Re: systemd breaks upgrade with useless error if /var is not owned by root

2020-10-10 Thread Darxus
Var was owned by the user I usually log in as. I don't know why, yes
it's weird, I fixed it. I don't think that justifies this package's
upgrade braking behavior.

Title:
  Python3 can't co-exist with Oracle's VirtualBox on 20.10

Status in dh-python package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in what-is-python package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Sorry I couldn't file this bug against the correct packages. The form
told me there are no such packages as python-is-python3 and dh-python
  in Ubuntu...

  Release: Groovy Gorilla (Ubuntu 20.10).

  Package versions:
  python-is-python3 3.8.2-4
  dh-python 4.20200925

The release of Ubuntu 20.10 is less than two weeks out, so I'd like to
draw attention to a problem I've run into. It seems that 20.10
defaults to python3 and wants to install python-is-python3, which
pulls in the latest version of dh-python, which in turn can't co-exist
with Oracle's Virtualbox-6.1 and wants to uninstall it.

I don't mind having _both_ python2 (apparently a requirement of
VirtualBox) and python3 installed. But as of right now I can have
either python-is-python3, and not be able to do a complete upgrade
since virtualbox-6.1 will be uninstalled, or python-is-python2, in
  which case I cripple 20.10's python3 install, since I won't get dh-
  python and python-six.

Ia there something the python packagers do about this?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1899298] [NEW] dbus.Byte does not accept single character strings

2020-10-10 Thread Len Ovens
Public bug reported:

Using dbus.Byte to create a Byte value for dbus errors out with:
return dbus.Byte(value);
TypeError: Expected a bytes or str of length 1, or an int in the range 0-255

even with a one character string like 'e' or 'a'. This is likely because
python2 strings were char and python3 strings are unicode. dbus.Byte
should still accept a str of length 1 and make the needed conversion
internally.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1873678] Re: gnome-language-selector crashed with dbus.exceptions.DBusException in call_blocking(): org.freedesktop.Accounts.Error.Failed: 'C.UTF-8' is not a valid locale name

2020-10-10 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ accountsservice includes a function for checking the validity of
+ locales, and it incorrectly considers "C.UTF-8" to be invalid. It leads
+ to incorrect behavior under certain conditions and also a crash if the
+ function was triggered from language-selector-gnome.
+
+ Even if this only makes a difference in special corner cases, it happens
+ often enough to justify this SRU:
+
+ https://errors.ubuntu.com/?release=Ubuntu%2020.04=language-
+ selector=year
+
+ (It's the top ranked crash type in the list.)
+
+ The version in focal-proposed fixes the issue.
+
+ [Test case]
+
+ Make a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04 (a VM works fine)
+
+ Once logged in:
+
+ * Install accountsservice, gir1.2-accountsservice-1.0 and
+ libaccountsservice0 from focal-proposed
+
+ * Open /etc/default/locale for editing, replace its contents with
+ the single line:
+
+ LANG=C.UTF-8
+
+ and reboot.
+
+ Open Language Support and change language (drag any language above
+ the "English" item)
+
+ Open ~/.pam_environment and find that e.g. LANG is now the locale
+ representing the language you selected, while e.g. LC_TIME is set to
+ "C.UTF-8".
+
+ [Regression risk]
+
+ This is a oneliner which white list "C.UTF-8" as a valid locale name. I
+ can't think of a case where this would cause unexpected behavior.

Title:
  gnome-language-selector crashed with dbus.exceptions.DBusException in
  call_blocking(): org.freedesktop.Accounts.Error.Failed: 'C.UTF-8' is
  not a valid locale name

Status in accountsservice package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed
Status in accountsservice source package in Focal:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]

accountsservice includes a function for checking the validity of
locales, and it incorrectly considers "C.UTF-8" to be invalid. It
leads to incorrect behavior under certain conditions and also a crash
if the function was triggered from language-selector-gnome.

Even if this only makes a difference in special corner cases, it
happens often enough to justify this SRU:

  https://errors.ubuntu.com/?release=Ubuntu%2020.04=language-
  selector=year

(It's the top ranked crash type in the list.)

The version in focal-proposed fixes the issue.

  [Test case]

Make a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04 (a VM works fine)

  Once logged in:

  * Install accountsservice, gir1.2-accountsservice-1.0 and
libaccountsservice0 from focal-proposed

  * Open /etc/default/locale for editing, replace its contents with
the single line:

LANG=C.UTF-8

and reboot.

Open Language Support and change language (drag any language above
  the "English" item)

Open ~/.pam_environment and find that e.g. LANG is now the locale
representing the language you selected, while e.g. LC_TIME is set to
  "C.UTF-8".

  [Regression risk]

This is a oneliner which white list "C.UTF-8" as a valid locale name.
I can't think of a case where this would cause unexpected behavior.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1787867] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS bluetooth left discoverable

2020-10-10 Thread Zeratul2k
Can confirm the bug still exists in 20.04.1 and just like Stephan T
mentioned, the workaround only works for a few reboots, then goes back
to visibility being on by default and becoming a security issue.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected

2020-10-10 Thread Tim Wetzel
These bugs started with a Ubuntu update just prior to Sept 14 (see post
103 above). By the 14th, there were initramfs problems on startup and
the hang on spinning circle which forced hard power downs.

Then on Sept 24, more updates installed including updates to grub,
*nvidia drivers*, and some other things. Immediately following these
Sept 24 updates, the suspend after entering login password started. That
first machine affected subsequently became so unstable that I tried to
reload Ubuntu; but that failed due to this bug. So that machine is now
completely sidelined.

These 4 bugs are devastating my Ubuntu machines. PLEASE fix these
(again, this bug and the other 3 mentioned in post 103)!

And please NOTE that the updated nvidia driver packet DOES seem to be
one of the bad actors in all this?

This is a cosmetic issue. The warning message is just that— a warning. Though
the message comes up, there is no problem with the install/upgrade happening
like normal. That said, feel free to ignore it. It will get fixed, but it's
nowhere near as urgent as bugs that actually result in the wrong behavior
rather than just a simple extra message.

  update-notifier SRU
  ---
  [Impact]
Cosmetic. Warnings when installing packages using update-notifier downloading
stuff

  [Test case]

Install flashplugin-installer with apt and check that the output does
not contain a message like this:

W: Can't drop privileges for downloading as file '...' couldn't be
  accessed by user '_apt'

  [Regression Potential]

  It just chowns /var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-
downloads/partial/ to _apt:root, there should not be any regression.

Recently we got new versions for synaptic 0.82+build1 & apt 1.1.3, but

Title:
Bash loses track of background children sometimes

Status in bash package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Under some circumstances (I've not worked out precisely what), bash
can forget about background child processes. For instance, if the
  file "simpletest" contains:

  #! /bin/bash

  count=0

  while [ $count -lt 51 ]; do
  count=$((count+1))
  /nonexist
  true &
  bgpids="$bgpids $!"
  done

  for pid in $bgpids; do
  wait $pid
  done

then running "bash simpletest", seems to reliably report "simpletest:
line 13: wait: pid 28850 is not a child of this shell" (with different
PIDs each time, obviously). Increasing the "51" in the script
increases the number of errors. Curiously, removing the call to a
nonexistent program causes the problem to stop manifesting.

"getconf CHILD_MAX" returns "undefined", which I think means that Bash
should support an unlimited number of unwaited children.

I've observed this on two different amd64 boxes running Ubuntu 10.04
LTS, and it persisted after I upgraded the bash package to
4.2-0ubuntu4. I couldn't reproduce it on an i386 box running Ubuntu
  11.04.

Bug description:
I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 on a Huawei Matebook 13 AMD laptop which seems
to use a Realtek RTL8822CE Wifi/Bluetooth combo adapter.

I've been unsuccessful to pair with 2 different bluetooth mice.
However bluetooth seems to work with other devices. I'm under the
impression that this problem only happens with Bluetooth LE devices.

Trying to pair using bluetoothctl fails with the
  org.bluez.Error.AuthenticationCanceled error:

Running btmon while trying to pair with the device gives me the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1894872] Re: [HP 15 Notebook] Audio stuttering in Ubuntu

2020-10-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Confirmed

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu
Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1894872

Title:
[HP 15 Notebook] Audio stuttering in Ubuntu

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The audio is stuttering at random times, a short (about a second or less)
repeated sound occurs, in the browser, in VLC or even the system sounds, and
it's actually annoying. I tried Fedora 32 but the same issue there, and I tried
OpenSUSE Leap 15.2 but it never happened.
My search led me to an Arch article explaining the situation:
"The newer implementation of the PulseAudio sound server uses timer-based
audio scheduling instead of the traditional, interrupt-driven approach.
Timer-based scheduling may expose issues in some ALSA drivers. On the other
hand, other drivers might be glitchy without it on, so check to see what works
on your system."
  See
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio/Troubleshooting#Glitches,_skips_or_crackling
I tried the proposed solutions but it Don't work.
Further search led me to the conclusion that it's an old bug:
  It happened in 16.04, see:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/915904/audio-glitches-every-2-10-minutes-ubuntu-16-04
  and 18.04, see:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1044552/audio-stuttering-in-ubuntu-18-04
It turned out that there is a bug in kernel which causes audio stutter if a
wifi enabled yet not connected to any wifi network.
I have an internal wifi card that is enabled but I don't use it, and a USB
wifi adapter which I use. So I disabled my internal unused wifi card by
blacklisting it and then reboot, and so far everything works fine (about 2
hours of testing). I re-enabled it and the stutter happened again. So I
reported this bug while both cards are enabled.
I don't mind blacklisting the unused card, but I think it's better to report
such bug.
