  A stack overflow in GNU Tar

Status in tar package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  A stack overflow vulnerability exists in GNU Tar up to including v1.34, as 
far as I can see, Ubuntu is using v1.3.
  The bug exists in the function xattr_decoder() in xheader.c, where alloca() 
is used and it may overflow the stack if a sufficiently long xattr key is used. 
The vulnerability can be triggered when extracting a tar/pax archive that 
contains such a long xattr key.

Note that as far as I understand from my own testing, the library file
that is affected by this particular upstream bugfix (OpenSSL
issue #18359/PR #18362) is ossl-modules/legacy.so ... 

... and as such it is possible to work around the bug in the
systemwide libssl3 package copy of that library by 
setting the OPENSSL_MODULES environment variable (rather than
touching LD_LIBRARY_PATH).

(See LP: #1972939 comment 11 for a brief bit of additional detail.)


If you are considering building a PPA to resolve this in Jammy,
here are a few possible approaches I can envision:

A) a "full" libssl3 package that contains the upstream patch applied
   directly to ossl-modules/legacy.so , and would be installed 
   in place of the standard libssl3 package.

B) a "full" libssl3 package (installed in place of the standard
   one) that contains the standard legacy.so file and then also a
   ossl-modules/legacy-fixedBF.so file with a copy of the
   legacy.so library patched by the fix.

C) a "special" libssl3 package (e.g. named libssl3-fixedbf) which
   would contain only the ossl-modules/legacy-fixedBF.so file, and
   would be installed alongside the standard libssl3 package.


The idea behind options B and C is that both the
broken/original-Jammy behavior and the fixed behavior would be
available simultaneously on the system, with the user selecting
which behavior they are looking for based on which module they
load at run time.  In both cases the ossl-modules/ directory
would contain both legacy.so and legacy-fixedBF.so files (once
the PPA package in question was installed).

With option A only the corrected library would be available
(at run time with the PPA package installed), and it would be
found under the standard "legacy" module name.  This would
certainly be the easiest-to-use approach in the Tinc-interop
case, but limits flexibility for sites which need compatibility
with both the default-Jammy and corrected behavior at the same
time.

(The names "legacy-fixBF.so" and "libssl3-fixedbf" just names I
made up to provide these examples; some other scheme like
"legacy-issue18359.so" or whatever would work similarly from the
user's standpoint.)

  This patch makes openssl match the documented default (see "man openssl-enc" 
and search for "Blowfish" for instance) and fixes decryption from an up-to-date 
Jammy to pretty much everything else, but it also create an issue for data 
encrypted on Jammy without this patch and Jammy with this patch.
  
  There are two possible cases: encrypted data being streamed across this
  boundary or data at rest being transferred or read later.
  
  Streaming is probably not an issue in practice because it's rather the
  current situation that has been an issue and it's easy to remedy by
  updating everything (which is relatively few machines since that's only
  Jammy and not any other OS or distribution).
  
  Data at rest is more annoying since updating Jammy will make it
  impossible to read the data again without updates to other pieces of
  software. That sounds like a really bad thing and it kind of is but at
  the same, the benefits are much larger than the issues. Indeed, there is
  already an incompatibility at the moment between Jammy and everything
  else and the more time passes by, the more such problematic files can be
  created. Luckily very few people are using blowfish nowadays and it's
  not even enabled by default anymore in openssl. Moreover the software
  update to work around the issue should be a single API call which is
  documented in the upstream bug report (
  https://github.com/openssl/openssl/issues/18359 ). Finally, I have
  warned the two projects that I am aware are impacted; this is made
  easier by the fact that they encountered the initial incompatibility.

  pseudo_syscall.c, which has broken it for s390. Perhaps s390 has been

  or the kernel. This seems to affect at least 4.4 and 5.4 kernels, but
  may affect everything.

November 16 was 2 days after livecd-rootfs 24.04.4 landed in the noble
release pocket, superseding 24.04.2.

The code delta between 24.04.2 and 24.04.4 includes removal of support
for "legacy" images (SUBPROJECT=legacy) which doesn't apply here; and
some reorganization of code related to "preinstalled" images which could
affect the riscv64+generic image, that is a preinstalled image using the
cpc project, but there were no code changes touching any of the image
partitioning code so it's unclear how those code changes could have
introduced this bug.

Bug description:
  Package "initramfs-tools-core" provides "/usr/share/initramfs-
  tools/hooks/fixrtc" which runs during the update or regeneration of
  the initramfs and requires the file "/sbin/dumpe2fs" (available from
  "e2fsprogs") to be present, otherwise it fails and aborts the whole
  process, leading e.g. to an inconsistent package system.

  The problem/cause seems to be that "initramfs-tools-core" package has
  no direct or indirect hard dependency on "e2fsprogs".

  I believe either the package dependency should be added, or the fixrtc
  hook script should be rewritten so that it just outputs a warning
  instead of aborting with a failure if missing "dumpe2fs" is not a
  critical problem.

  This issue seems to affect at least Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04. It has
  been brought to my attention at https://askubuntu.com/q/1148791/367990

A developer noticed that the packaged version on Ubuntu was missing the 
installation of the new CMake files, and added them in this patch:

This patch has not made it to Ubuntu 22.

The effect is an inability to use find_package(tinyxml2 CONFIG
REQUIRED).

As I tested out, installing 9.0.0+dfsg-3.1 in Jammy solves the issue.

Sometimes I don't understand what happens when I attempt to reply by

Anyway...
The affected code is in libcrypto which I think sees fewer important security 
fixes. Therefore it's possible to build it and put it in your library search 
path. This should fix the issue without being too terrible wrt security updates.

I still think that setting the key size in the caller program is better
if possible however. It's slightly more involved upfront though (but it
could pay up in the end).

I'll prepare a PPA on tomorrow with only this change on tomorrow; I will
probably add a few things to prevent using the package directly however
since I expect the proper approach would be to 'dpkg -x' the package or
equivalent and use its libcrypto.so and LD_LIBRARY_PATH or similar
specifically when needed.

  The contents are expected to be different due to the use of
  randomness. Don't try to compare the base64 outputs: I'm only using
  them to ease testing across containers.

  [Where problems could occur]
  This patch makes openssl match the documented default (see "man openssl-enc" 
and search for "Blowfish" for instance) and fixes decryption from an up-to-date 
Jammy to pretty much everything else, but it also create an issue for data 
encrypted on Jammy without this patch and Jammy with this patch.

  There are two possible cases: encrypted data being streamed across
  this boundary or data at rest being transferred or read later.

  Streaming is probably not an issue in practice because it's rather the
  current situation that has been an issue and it's easy to remedy by
  updating everything (which is relatively few machines since that's
  only Jammy and not any other OS or distribution).

  Data at rest is more annoying since updating Jammy will make it
  impossible to read the data again without updates to other pieces of
  software. That sounds like a really bad thing and it kind of is but at
  the same, the benefits are much larger than the issues. Indeed, there

We came across this and noticed the CA certificates parsing itself is
one of the biggest slowdowns. One of the reasons OpenSSL ends up doing
that parsing is ca-certificates puts the same certificates in
/etc/ssl/certs/*.pem ("CApath") and /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt
("CAfile"):

$ wc -l /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt <(cat /etc/ssl/certs/*.pem)

On a mantic system, as a baseline:

certificates (sadly an empty file results in errors), so there's much
less parsing to be done, things are much faster:

This also reproduces as a visible difference in user CPU time when
simply running curl against a HTTPS site.

I do wonder if somehow it would be possible to disable the CA file and
only rely on the CA path. Likely easier said than done, particularly
with the API changes in 3.x (splitting out the file loading into
SSL_CTX_load_verify_file).

There's also some Python specific discussion in
https://github.com/python/cpython/issues/95031 too, I did try setting
requests.get(..., verify='/etc/ssl/certs/') in the test script to
attempt to get requests to read only the directory per[1] but that
didn't seem to work.

There aren't many ways to make localtime() fail and we still don't know
how this happened in this case. We expect this happens maybe on a 32-bit
machine. You can't have a really huge value in btmp anyway because
everything is stored on 32-bit signed integers but maybe seconds are
negative or microseconds are more than a million (or negative?). It's
very difficult to tell and I think we could reproduce the issue but we
might also find several ways to get the same behavior.

I'm also wondering if the bug is really in pam _if_ the behavior is
different between 32-bit and 64-bit arches. This could be worth
investigating.

Do we have a *tmp file that exhibit the issue? I think it would be worth
diving into the binary to see if anything stands out.

The `apt` command is not the command used in release-upgrading (moving
from one release to a newer release), and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS does not
currently support upgrading to any other release than lunar (23.04)
being the next release currently. When 23.04 reaches EOL, that will then
switch to mantic (23.10), but currently that is only available for test
or QA purposes.

Your filing against `apt` or a package tool does not fit with the title;
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-upgrader is the package involved in
release-upgrades; and your bug title, package filing and description
don't seem to match.

  compatible titles.

  Screen corruption (white and grey streaks) present in-game when GNOME
  UI elements appeared on-screen (e.g., volume, brightness, and keyboard
  backlight indicators) and omnipresent after closing either game.

  Artifacts remain on screen until log-out or reboot. Artifacts were not
  present beforehand.

  Artifacts only appeared in Wayland session; not X11/Xorg.

  I previously had been running the same games on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
  (GNOME, Wayland) and Kubuntu 22.04 LTS (Plasma, X11/Xorg) on this
  computer without issue (kernel 6.2).
