[Touch-packages] [Bug 1373495] Re: sudo shouldn't preserve caller's HOME environment variable by default

2017-06-27 Thread
@seth-arnold
Sorry for the very~ late reply, my aplogies.

> If HOME is removed, then e.g. vim, bash, etc., will use /root/.vimrc,
> /root/.bashrc,
>  etc rather than the user's ~/.vimrc, ~/.bashrc, etc.
You shouldn't expect finding your config files when using other user's
account(including root).
If you need the same configuration simply create a symbolic link then.

> there's a chance that X11 clients may not even be able to connect to the X11
> server if they are aimed at the wrong .Xauthority file.
In fact X11 clients doesn't require SUDO_USER's .Xauthority file to run, all
you have to to is to run `xhost +SI:localuser:root` to allow X server be
accessed by root user then you can run `sudo whatever-x11-application` without
setting SUDO_USER's HOME directory (unless the application itself does not
allow running as root, such as recent release of Kate and Dolphin).

In summary,

1. Setting SUDO_USER's home directory as HOME of root is not the proper method
to "let my stuff in my home directory to be accessed by root" and will cause
numerous disasters(such as https://www.ptt.cc/bbs/Linux/M.1498509926.A.AC9.html
which forces me to review this bug)
2. "Running X11 applications as root" isn't a reason to keep this patch as
well, as it can **still** runnable as root without setting SUDO_USER's home
directory.

Title:
  sudo shouldn't preserve caller's HOME environment variable by default

Status in One Hundred Papercuts:

Status in sudo package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Currently Ubuntu hard-coded sudo to preserve HOME environment variable
  to point to sudo caller's home directory by default(refer bug #760140)
  however this is dangerous and error-prone because the program run by
  root may create files (e.g. $HOME/.Xauthority , program config files)
  into caller's HOME directory **AS ROOT** which, will cause issue when
  users run the same program as their normal users' account again and
  even make the user failed to login(due to .Xauthority file owner is
  incorrect)

  In my opinion the Ubuntu patch(keep_home_by_default.patch)(no, Debian
  is NOT affected by this issue) that makes $HOME variable keep in sudo
  is INSANE and should be reverted(Ubuntu should use the safest
  configuration to general users by default), any user wish to run
  command as root using their HOME directory should set env_keep in
  /etc/sudoers themselves and acknowledging the consequences.

  [RootSudo - Community Help
  Wiki](https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo) wrongly tells that
  graphical application shouldn't be launched by sudo, but in fact the
  real issue falls into this bug.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1638842] Re: network-manager does not manage ethernet and bluetooth interfaces when Ubuntu 16.10 is installed using chroot/netboot method

2016-11-03 Thread
Update Workaround in #2 (again), the proper way to deal with it is to
create a blank file with the same name under /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d
, in command-line:

```
# touch /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf
```

Bug description:
  Hello,

  Wifi works perfectly but I cannot connect to wired networks and using

  The following command has no effect:
  sudo nmcli dev set enp1s0 managed yes

  I can connect to a wired connection by doing:
  ifconfig enp1s0 up
  dhclient enp1s0

  There is nothing in the file /etc/network/interfaces.

  Everything works perfectly if I downgrade network-manager to this
  version: network-manager_1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.3_amd64.deb
  (http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial-updates/amd64/network-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1638842] Re: network-manager does not manage ethernet and bluetooth interfaces when Ubuntu 16.10 is installed using chroot/netboot method

2016-11-03 Thread
Hi, I believe I have the same issue, however there's differences that
you installed Ubuntu 16.10 using chroot, while I installed Ubuntu 16.10
using netboot(and then tasksel ubuntu-desktop), here are the
investigation results:

## Possible Cause ##
The problem seems to be lies on the new override config introduced in 16.10:

```
  * debian/10-globally-managed-devices.conf: ship a default config to
explicitly unmanage anything that is not wifi or wwan: we definitely want
NM to manage wifi and mobile data; and probably don't want it to touch
wired in many cases.
```

which is installed at /usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-
managed-devices.conf , with the following content:

```
[keyfile]
unmanaged-devices=*,except:type:wifi,except:type:wwan
```

that unmanages all network interfaces except wifi and wwan, thus
bluetooth interface in your case and ethernet case in my case are all
unmanaged by default.

According to the future changelog by Martin Pitt:

```
  * network-manager.postinst: Don't create
/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf override on
new installations. We don't want NM to manage non-wifi/wwan on
servers/cloud instances, and for desktops live-build now installs a
netplan policy snippet to let NM handle all devices.
```

This is designed to not let NM manage those interfaces except in a
desktop edition(possibly because servers normally uses the ifupdown
mechanism to manage networking), what I'm confused is:

* Why there's the need to do so when ifupdown NM plugin already provides the
ability to unmanages the network interfaces that have settings in
/etc/network/interfaces?
* Why the config still working after user installs *ubuntu-desktop, rendering
those network-interfaces unmanaged even when it is clearly not for server/cloud
usage?

## Workaround ##
Remove /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf, it works(TM)

  In order to get the Karmic repo, I have to add the deb/deb-src

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1553211] Re: gnome-software does not treat recommends and suggests as plugins to applications | impossible to install "technical" packages (plugins, kernels...) | Ubuntu desktop

2016-04-24 Thread
I thoroughly read the bug report and believe that this bug should be
split to two different bugs dealing with different issues:

1. Software packages that considered to be an application's addon(which is
Jaufré, Amr, et.al discussed about)
2. Software packages that is rather a component of another application,
software, or system(which is also-Jaufré and I mentioning)

If every one's fine with that I'll create a new bug to ubuntu-meta(or
other package if applicable) dealing with 2. and leave this bug with the
1. topic.

I wonder why this still happens even after the fix is released on
14.04/15.10...

  --
  SRU INFORMATION
  ===
  Fix: https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/apt/apt.git/commit/?id=c75e60eb (applied
in Xenial last week)

  Test case:
   - Install clean wily amd64 desktop + install libgcrypt20:i386
   - change apt sources to xenial, apt-get dist-upgrade
   - with current apt, upgrade will often fail because systemd expects a
configure libgcrypt20, or util-linux expects a configured libudev1 or similar,
but these packages aren't configured.
   - with the fixed apt, the upgrade should run smoothly.

  Regression potential: Any bug here might potentially break package
  installation or upgrades completely. That said, the fix is quite
  obvious and has been in production in xenial for a week. Testing this
  SRU should include several dist-upgrades as well as some normal
  package installs in trusty/wily.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1553211] Re: gnome-software does not treat recommends and suggests as plugins to applications | impossible to install "technical" packages (plugins, kernels...)

2016-04-21 Thread
IMO user still expect GUI to install non-GUI software packages, if
GNOME/Ubuntu Software doesn't want to include it I'll instantly file a
new bug to add another GUI package management software like
Synaptic/Muon in default ubuntu desktop installation.

** Also affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)

  Ubuntu 16.04 will be useless for "normal" people if they can't find every

  To force users to use gnome-software will be a regression!

  Examples:

  In old Software Center, you could add gimp plug-ins (plug-ins are recommends
and suggests packages of gimp) by going in gimp description and check the
plug-ins you want!
  In old Software Center, you could install another version of linux kernel by
typing "linux" then click at bottom left to show the packages.

  Now, they have to use apt-get or install synaptic!

2016-04-15 Thread
```
dpkg --purge libcgmanager0:i386 libdbus-1-3:i386 libgcrypt20:i386
libnih-dbus1:i386 libsystemd0:i386
```
Wouldn't using `apt-get purge` more proper than using `dpkg --purge`?

One week before 14.04 release, it would be great if the patch lands 14.04 and
15.10 soon.

Why would amd64 arch. systemd depends on i386 arch. libgcrypt20?

Anyway thanks for testing, I'll try to reproduce it as well.

I have done some more testing:
1.) I removed all the i386 packages, used for skype and google-earth and did a
'do-release-upgrade -d' -- and it worked.
2.) I rerun the 'do-release-upgrade -d' with the i386 packages still installed
