[Touch-packages] [Bug 1599126] [NEW] On return from a previous Log Out, Wi-Fi fails to restore.

2016-07-05 Thread David Chatterton
Public bug reported:

When returning from a previous Log Out, the previously connected Wi-Fi
fails to reconnect.

In contrast, when rebooting or performing a restart, the system connects
to the previously connected Wi-Fi.

Although the Enable Wi-Fi drop-down menu item is ticked, the connect
button on the appropriate panel is greyed out.

The only practical solution is to perform a restart which restores the
Wi-Fi connection without further action.

** Affects: alsa-driver (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1563112] Re: [bcm2835 - bcm2835 ALSA, playback] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2016-04-29 Thread David Chatterton
Despite the crackling on the Speaker Test, I have managed to get YouTube
videos to play with un-distorted sound using Firefox.

Obviously, Firefox's input to the sound system appears to work as
expected.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1574871] [NEW] On return from a previous Log Out, WiFi fails to restore.

2016-04-25 Thread David Chatterton
Public bug reported:

When restarting from scratch, the previous WiFi enabled state is

the WiFi is sometimes (but not always) disabled.

under 15.10. Unfortunately, it has not been fixed for 16.04 LTS.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1563112] Re: [bcm2835 - bcm2835 ALSA, playback] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2016-04-20 Thread David Chatterton
Having upgraded the Raspberry Pi (2 & 3) to Ubuntu MATE 16.04 Beta 2,
the bug is still present and can be demonstrated adequately by
attempting the built-in Speaker Test.

Interestingly, the Raspberry Pi s are capable of attempting to run the
Software Defined Radio app Gqrx. This app has instability issues of its
own, reported elsewhere. However, when it does run (for up to 2 minutes
before crashing), it is capable of outputting decent quality stereo
sound via the speakers although the sound sequence always seems to begin
with a broken sound stream. Whether the handshake between the app and
ALSA or its breakdown is the cause of the app crashing is another matter
but since the app is capable of receiving good quality broadcast stereo
sound via the VHF band, this sound is capable of being reproduced at
high quality via ALSA and the HDMI interface to the monitor (with
speakers) whilst the app is running.

As soon as I can upgrade to Ubuntu MATE 16.04, I shall report back with
further observations.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1408110] Re: [XPS13 9333, Realtek ALC3661, Speaker, Internal] fails after a while

Title:
[XPS13 9333, Realtek ALC3661, Speaker, Internal] fails after a while

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
When playing a video via the Videos app, the sound through the
internal speakers develops crackles and sometimes disappears
  completely.

I collected the data for the bug report at the instance that the sound
  had failed.

Using the Sound panel in Systems Settings to test the sound produces
  no response.

I have also selected the Volume Control app and attempted to switch
the sound using the Configuration tab and switching the built-in audio
between Off and Analogue Stereo Output. Sometimes this works and
  sometimes is does not.

Having left the Videos app running whist typing this, I have noticed
that the sound seems to start and stop whilst typing via the keyboard.

I note that the Playback tab in the Volume Control window shows that
the sound is being produced by the Videos app (the lower ribbon moves
  with the sound amplitude).

This bug might be associated with intermittent recognition of the
hardware on startup. The Sound window sometimes shows no audio device.
At other times, the speakers are given the HDMI menu dropdown but this
can be corrected by plugging in a pair of headphones and switching
back to the speakers which then show the correct Test Sound legend.

I have noticed several instances of the sound cutting out and cutting
back in whilst typing this report as if the interrupts from the
keyboard strokes are interrupting the sound connection.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1513273] Re: [XPS13 9333, Realtek ALC3661, Speaker, Internal] Sound is distorted

2016-01-05 Thread David Chatterton
Despite no activity on this bug, the fault is still there.

If Musescore is started first, the sound is distorted. If the Sound
panel (under Systems Settings) is opened when Musescore is playing
distorted sound and the test buttons activated, then the tests are also
distorted.

If Musescore is shut down and the test buttons activated, the test
sounds play undistorted. If Musescore is subsequently started, it then
appears to play undistorted sound.

I have gone to the trouble of reporting this bug in the hope that its
solution might contribute to improvement of Ubuntu. If noone else is
sufficiently concerned, then the bug report will probably expire again,
even though the bug remains.

Hopefully, it will not be there in 16.04 but if it is, one can only
continue to file a report on it.

  Confirmed

Bug description:
The distorted sound only occurs when using MuseScore 2.0.2 to play
music through the speakers. The sound initially appears distorted and
crackly. Using the Sound app to test the speakers, the normal test
signal is distorted and crackly, even though the tests sound normal
before the MuseScore app is launched. This distortion persists for an
indeterminate period of time, sometimes a few seconds, sometime
several minutes. Then, all of a sudden, the sound quality returns to
normal and the test signals sound normal without distortion.

This seems to occur every time MuseScore is started, even though the
sound quality when tested using the Sound app or playing sound from
the Videos and Rhythmbox Music Player before MuseScore is started is
  normal and distortion-free.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1513273] [NEW] [XPS13 9333, Realtek ALC3661, Speaker, Internal] Sound is distorted

2015-11-04 Thread David Chatterton
Public bug reported:

The distorted sound only occurs when using MuseScore 2.0.2 to play music
through the speakers. The sound initially appears distorted and crackly.
Using the Sound app to test the speakers, the normal test signal is
distorted and crackly, even though the tests sound normal before the
MuseScore app is launched. This distortion persists for an indeterminate
period of time, sometimes a few seconds, sometime several minutes. Then,
all of a sudden, the sound quality returns to normal and the test
signals sound normal without distortion.

This seems to occur every time MuseScore is started, even though the
sound quality when tested using the Sound app or playing sound from the
Videos and Rhythmbox Music Player before MuseScore is started is normal
and distortion-free.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1408110] Re: [XPS13 9333, Realtek ALC3661, Speaker, Internal] fails after a while

2015-07-26 Thread David Chatterton
After experiencing warmer weather and hence a warmer start-up
temperature for my laptop, I discovered that the sound system would not
work at all and would not respond to a re-boot. In order to prepare the
laptop for a possible return under the guarantee, I re-installed Ubuntu
14.04.02 LTS and confirmed the fault by running the built-in diagnostic
(selected through the options obtained by holding F12 on start-up). This
caused the circuit board to warm up appreciably and, surprise, surprise,
the audio system returned to functionality on re-booting. However, its
functionality did not remain as the laptop cooled to normal ambient
temperature.

I discussed these symptoms with Dell Technical support who offered to
send out a Technician (Engineer?) to change the sound board. He arrived
the next day and changed the board, explaining that sometimes, very
rarely, there might be a dry joint which is impossible to see visually.
On switch on, the sound worked perfectly. To date, I have not been able
to duplicate any faulty operation whatsoever including starting up from
cold (the weather is now cooler) and allowing the laptop to warm up by
running the diagnostics or running processor-intensive apps light
Flightgear that cause the fan to come on. It would seem that all my
previously reported problems were down to a possible dry joint.

Three cheers to Dell Technical support who responded to my query by
sending around a Technician who was able to complete the repair. I wish
that I had spoken to Technical support earlier although I did not want
to be in the situation of having the laptop returned with No Fault
Found especially when the fault was inconsistent and apparently related
to the operating system.

Thanks to all those in this forum who took the time to look at my fault
report and to confirm the operation of the software. I now have the
laptop running Ubuntu 15.04 and it preforms beautifully. I look forward
to the next release

Title:
[XPS13 9333, Realtek ALC3661, Speaker, Internal] fails after a while

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

I do not seem to find a way to close this bug report. The problem is
fixed but does not need (IMHO) any software intervention.

When the F11 and F12 keys are working as expected, a pop is heard in

adjusting the volume using the slider in the pull-down menu at the top

slider moving in the Sound window. However, this produces no audible
pop as occurs when the volume level is adjusted by other methods.

When starting Ubuntu from boot-up, sometimes the F11 and F12 keys have
no effect on the sound volume, even though it can be controlled by the
slider in the Sound window.

This can often be restored by re-booting the OS.

When the F11 and F12 keys are working as expected, a pop is heard in
the speakers indicating a change of volume level. The output volume
slider in the Sound window has the same effect. However, when adjusting
the volume using the slider in the pull-down menu at the top right of
the desktop, the sound level is adjusted as seen by the slider moving in
the Sound window. However, this produces no audible pop as occurs when
the volume level is adjusted by other methods.

Title:
[XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] volume slider
  problem

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When starting Ubuntu from boot-up, sometimes the F11 and F12 keys have
no effect on the sound volume, even though it can be controlled by the
  slider in the Sound window.

This can often be restored by re-booting the OS.

When the F11 and F12 keys are working as expected, a pop is heard in
the speakers indicating a change of volume level. The output volume
slider in the Sound window has the same effect. However, when
adjusting the volume using the slider in the pull-down menu at the top
right of the desktop, the sound level is adjusted as seen by the
slider moving in the Sound window. However, this produces no audible
pop as occurs when the volume level is adjusted by other methods.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1408110] Re: [XPS13 9333, Realtek ALC3661, Speaker, Internal] fails after a while

2015-04-28 Thread David Chatterton
Since upgrading to 15.04, I still experience inconsistent behaviour in
the sound system. Sometimes, the system does not detect the speakers at
all on boot-up. At other times, the Sound panel shows the HDMI sound in
the Settings for Speakers section (although this can be corrected by
clicking on the Speakers in the Play Sound Through box.

Currently (under 15.04), plugging in headphones no longer brings up the
dialogue box requesting to know what device was plugged into the
headphone socket (Stereo Headphones, Headset with microphone or
microphone alone). The Headphones appear in the Play Sound Through
listing and disappear when the headphones are removed. The sound is
directed from the speakers to the headphones if the latter are plugged
in. However, now (under 15.04) it is possible to select the Speakers for
the sound output even when the headphones are plugged in. This was
certainly not the case under 14.10 where the headphones had priority as
though the headphone socket was hard wired.

I have just tried plugging a mono microphone in the headphone socket.
This causes the headphones to appear in the Play Sound Through box.
Unfortunately, the sound has now gone crackly and is not responding to a
change of volume control keys. A reboot seems to be called for.

When playing sound from a Video (using the Videos app), the sound can
become crackly although it can be restored to normal by exercising the
volume control keys (F11 F12) up and down. If this fails and the sound
disappears altogether, it is necessary to reboot although this does not
work every time and several reboots are required to restore the sound to
normal.

If I use the Volume Control app's Configuration tab to set the Built-in
Audio option to Off, the Speakers in the Sound app show Settings for
HDMI / DisplayPort Mode as Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output. By clicking on
the Speakers in the Play Sound Through box, the Settings for Speakers
are restored with the Test Sound button appearing. The Built-in Audio
Profile changes from Off to Analogue Stereo Output.

I note that the Playback tab in the Volume Control window shows that

This bug might be associated with intermittent recognition of the

At other times, the speakers are given the HDMI menu dropdown but this
can be corrected by plugging in a pair of headphones and switching
back to the speakers which then show the correct Test Sound legend.

I have noticed several instances of the sound cutting out and cutting

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1408110] Re: [XPS13 9333, Realtek ALC3661, Speaker, Internal] fails after a while

2015-04-28 Thread David Chatterton
After a reboot, plugging a headphone extension lead (open circuit) into
the headphone socket brings up Headphones in the Sound - Output tab and
both Headset Microphone and Microphone in the Input tab. Removing the
lead removes the extra microphone from the Input tab and the Headphones
from the Output tab. This behaviour seems more logical - except than the
volume keys (F11 F12) have now stopped working! The volume can be
adjusted with the cursor on the Output volume slider but the keyboard
keys are not working.

Curiouser and curiouser. (After Alice in Wonderland!)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1408110] Re: [XPS13 9333, Realtek ALC3661, Speaker, Internal] fails after a while

2015-04-28 Thread David Chatterton
Now that the sound system is going through one of its funny moods,
plugging in a mono microphone brings up Headphones on the Play Sound
Through box although the Speakers can still be selected as Output.

Selecting the Input tab of the Sound panel, the Microphone shows up as
an input device (as does a non-existent Headset Microphone). If
Microphone is selected, the Input level ribbon seems to indicate
sensitivity to sound at the microphone. However, unplugging the
Microphone does not remove the Microphone from the Record sound from
box. Neither does it remove the Headphones from the Play Sound through
box under the Output tab.

I would appreciate if other Dell XPS-13 owners are experiencing similar
problems (as Ianni67 above) as this probably confirms the fault as being
in the software rather than a generic hardware fault.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402194] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2014-12-20 Thread David Chatterton
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

This bug relates to the internal sound hardware in a Dell XPS 13 laptop.
Since accepting an upgrade to the latest Ubuntu Extra software today,
the Systems Settings Sound Output no longer show the internal
speakers, despite numerous attempts to shut down and restart.

Before accepting the upgrade, the sound played normally through the
  speakers.

Having upgraded the system from the Ubuntu 12.10 originally installed
with the laptop and finding comments relating to the software drivers
for the Intel WiFi and Bluetooth chip (Intel AC 7520) and touch screen,
I tried out an installation straight from a Ubuntu 14.04 bootable USB
stick. The system worked well enough without these drivers so I went
ahead and replaced the whole installation from the USB stick and
subsequently accepted the upgrade to 14.10.

I tried plugging in a headset and this produced a screen allowing me to
select the type of headset (mono, with or without mic or stereo). An
extra entry appeared in the System Settings Sound Output pane
allowing me to choose between the headset or the speakers and to test
the audio on each one. However, unplugging the headset seemed to produce
intermittent behaviour, the system being uncertain as to whether the
headset was in use. This was solved by re-booting and the system and
  speakers behaved as expected.

Now I have the situation that the speakers are not shown in the Sound
Output pane and the Output Volume slider stays at zero and is unable to
be moved with the pointer. The volume control slider in the dropdown
panel from the speaker symbol in the system tray appears to respond to
movement from the pointer and the Fn-F11 F12 keys. However, with no
output device shown, there is no sound output to the speakers.

Several attempts to restart the system have failed to restore the
  speaker functionality.

Bug description:
This bug relates to the internal sound hardware in a Dell XPS 13
laptop. Since accepting an upgrade to the latest Ubuntu Extra software
today, the Systems Settings Sound Output no longer show the
internal speakers, despite numerous attempts to shut down and restart.

Before accepting the upgrade, the sound played normally through the
  speakers.

Having upgraded the system from the Ubuntu 12.10 originally installed
with the laptop and finding comments relating to the software drivers
for the Intel WiFi and Bluetooth chip (Intel AC 7520) and touch
screen, I tried out an installation straight from a Ubuntu 14.04
bootable USB stick. The system worked well enough without these
drivers so I went ahead and replaced the whole installation from the
USB stick and subsequently accepted the upgrade to 14.10.

I tried plugging in a headset and this produced a screen allowing me
to select the type of headset (mono, with or without mic or stereo).
An extra entry appeared in the System Settings Sound Output pane
allowing me to choose between the headset or the speakers and to test
the audio on each one. However, unplugging the headset seemed to
produce intermittent behaviour, the system being uncertain as to
whether the headset was in use. This was solved by re-booting and the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-18 Thread David Chatterton
This is a further report on the behaviour of the sound system.

I did not experence any crackling today so am unable to report on its
occurrence.

I played a video using the Videos app and ontained good quality sound.

Plugging a pair of good quality headphones allowed me to listen for any
instances of poor quality. None were heard.

I note that a pair o fheadphones appears to override any signal being
sent to the Speakers (as one would normally expect for electrical
switching of the output via the headphone socket) as noted in comment
#12. However, I also note that the system retains separate volume
controls for speakers and headphones. Thus, if the speakers are set to a
louder volume than the headphones, highlighting the Speakers menu item
in the Sound panel will increase the volume of the sound in the
headphones.

When I plugged an HDMI monitor into the DisplayPort socket, the video
display system recognised the monitor and extended the display to it. I
was thus able to move the Videos window into the monitor's area and get
the window to appear in full screen as it does on the laptop's screen.
However, the sound remained playing through the headphones. There was no
HDMI/Display Port menu item in the Sound panel.

Using the workaround as in the initial bug description, I opened the VLC
app, selected the HDMI under Audio Devices and, as soon as a video
file was opened, the HDMI menu item appeared. I closed the VLC app and
highlighted the HDMI menu item which caused the sound to play out of the
minotor's speakers.

Unplugging the monitor from the Display Port caused the display to
revert to the laptop's display and the sound menu item caused the sound
to be directedto revert to the headphones that remained plugged in.
However, reconnecting the HDMI monitor brought up the HDMI sound output
option in the Sound panel. Highlighting of the HDMI caused the sound to
be redirected to the monitor's speakers once again.

Just for good measure, I switched on a previously paired set of
Bluetooth headph ones. Their menu item appeared in the Sound panel and
the sound was able to be directed to them as one might expect.

What I regard as part of this bug report is therefore the failure of the
sound system to recognise the availability of the HDMI / Display Port
sound option without having to kick it into action using the VLC app.

Other outputs such as the headphone and Bluetooth headphones seem to
achieve this but not the connection to the Display Port unless
previously primed by VLC.

The workaround is to open the VLC app which lists the Built-in Stereo (HDMI)
option under its Audio Audio Devices menu.

When a video is started in VLC, having selected the HDMI option, the sound
plays through the monitor speakers. The HDMI / Display Port , Built-in Audio

If VLC is closed and Videos is restarted, the sound now plays through

What I regard as a bug is the failure of the HDMI option to appear in
the Play sound through listing as soon as an HDMI monitor is plugged
into the Display Port output. Obviously, VLC has the means to add this
item but the Videos app does not seem to be able to do this by itself.

In contrast, as soon as a previously paired set of Bluetooth headphone

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-18 Thread David Chatterton
Having downloaded and installed todays latest kernel update v3.18.1, I
now find that the HDMI / Display Port menu items appears in the Sound
pane when the HDMI monitor is plugged into the Display Port. This was
after a cold start.

Since this was the start of this bud report and now appears to be fixed,
it might be appropriate to close this bug report.

Thank you all you developers who might have read this and made the
appropriate tweaks in the kernel. (I note from the CHANGES file that
some work had been done on ALSA.)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-18 Thread David Chatterton
Sorry, still not fixed.

When plugging in a Sony TV set with HDMI, it is not recognised without
using VLC to kick start the recognition. Once recognised, removing the
Display Port plug and re-inserting it sometimes removes the HDMI menu
item and has it re-appear but not predictably so. Sometimes the TV set
displays the message Audio Source not recognised. The video works
alright but the sound system output recognition still needs
improvements. The Display Port adapter used is an Apple adapter from
Display Port (now known as Thunderbolt) to a standard HDMI male to male
lead. (The new Apple MacBook Pros now have a dedicated HDMI connector
and can therefore use a standard HDMI cable - Dell take note!)

I shall look forward to the next kernel update.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-17 Thread David Chatterton
I am attempting to eliminate possible poor electrical connections
associated with the headphone socket by starting up the laptop from cold
(literally having cooled down) and running a video to check the sound
quality.

Last evening, within 10 minutes of starting the laptop from cold, the
sound became crackly. I used the Test Sound button on the Sound panel
and found no response from the Front Left Test button. However, the
Front Right Test button caused a muted response from the left speaker! I
did an immediated restart and everything then worked perfectly - no
crackles and correct sound tests.

This morning, after an overnight cold soak, the system started up and
the speakers responded correctly to the Test Sound button. However,
within 10 minutes of playing a video, the sound became crackly. The
speakers responded correctly to the test Sound button and the crackles
subsided. I plugged in a pair of headphones which caused the device
identification panel (headphones, headset or microphone) to pop up.
However, the sound was directed through the headphone straight away. On
removing the headphones, the sound went back to the speakers without
having to click their menu item in the Sound panel. (Has the system
learned from previous connections?)

After a further 20 minutes of playing the video, the sound became
crackly again. The speakers did respond correctly to the Test Sound
button but the crackles were still evident. I picked up the laptop and
gently tapped the underside of the case near the headphone socket. This
might have contributed to the crackling sound but it then disappeared
and the speakers sounded normal again.

By this time, the laptop had warmed up to its normal operating
temperature.

Since plugging in headphones seems to cause an interrupt that brings up
the device select panel, there must be an electrical interface between
the headphone socket and the circuit board. I doubt if the headphone
socket is gold plated but intermittent connection must be expected with
such an interface. Normally, when there is a connection between
mechanical contacts and electronic circuits, some form of bounce
suppression is employed. Apart from the early electronic calculators
that used mercury wetted reed switches, it has been common practice to
include this bounce suppression in the software. I am sure that this has
not been overlooked in the Linux kernel but it might be prudent to
ensure that such a bounce suppression is compatible with the cheap and
chearful electrical contacts found on headphone sockets. (Software bouce
suppression works well enough on keyboards. Perhaps the parameters used
could be migrated to the headphone socket interface.)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-17 Thread David Chatterton
Please note that with the headphones plugged it and the Speakers re-
selected, the Test Sound button brings up the panel labelled Speaker
Testing for Speakers. The test buttons produce sound in the headphones
and not the speakers. The plugging in of headphones therefore overrides
any output selection via the Sound panel.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-16 Thread David Chatterton
Regrettably, my suggestion that this bug report be closed is premature.

On switching on the laptop from cold this morning, I found that there
was nothing listed in the Systems Settings Sound pane.

I chose to shut down and start up again. This time, I found the
Speakers, Built-in Audio listed but with the HDMI options shown.

I did a restart and found the same situation. However, I decided to plug
in a pair of headphones in an attempt to kick-start the system. This
brought up the panel asking to identify the type of headset. The
headphones appeared in the listing and the Test Sound button enabled me
to test the left and right channels for output. I then clicked on the
Speakers and found that the HDMI options had been replaced by the Test
Sound button. However, the left and right channel test sounds came
through the headphones and not through the speakers, even though the
speakers were highlighted. I then removed the headphones. Their menu
item disappeared and I was able to use the Test Sound button to get
sound from the speakers.

The point about this bug report is that the system does not function as
well as one could reasonably expect. I have a number of people who are
interested in moving away from the MS Windows environment and are
looking to me for a recommendation. Although Dell appear to manufacture
an excellent laptop in the form of the XPS 13, Dell still only supply it
with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and include proprietary drivers for the Intel AC
7260 WiFi and Bluetooth chip. I believe that I have moved on
significantly by upgrading to 14.10 and using the latest v3.18 kernel
(as well as dispensing with the Dell-supplied drivers). I have great
expectations for 15.04 when it appears. However, I would not expect any
support from Dell for what I have done so far. Until I can get the
laptop to perform reliably without intervention, my advice to those
wishing to move away from Windows is to bite the bullet and invest in an
Apple MacBook Pro running OS X 10.10.1. One can still run FOSS
applications such as LibreOffice and GIMP on the Mac but it is a pity
that Ubuntu has not yet arrived at the Mac's level of functionality,
although I hope that, by continuing to submit my bug reports, I can
contribute to Ubuntu's development.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-16 Thread David Chatterton
Here we go again!

Whislt playing a video through Videos with the sound playing over the
speakers, I turned on a pair of Bluetooth hadphones. Sure enough, the
headphones' menu item appeared in the Systems Settings Souund pane. I
needed to hightlight the item to get the sound through the headphones. I
then turned off the headphones. The headphones' menu item disappeared
and the Speakers item was highlighted. However, there was no sound
through the speakers. Even clicking on the menu item failed to produce
any sound.

Plugging a pair of wired headphones caused their menu item to appear but
no sound at all, even after clicking the menu item.

I can only assume that the sound system had crashed!

I did a restart and got the sound working again.

Unfortunately, the system is still unstable.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] [NEW] [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-15 Thread David Chatterton
Public bug reported:

If an HDMI monitor is plugged into the video out and the Videos app is
started, the Systems Settings Sound Output shows only the Speakers,
Built-in Audio in the Play sound through listing. The HDMI option is not
presented.

The workaround is to open the VLC app which lists the Built-in Stereo (HDMI)

2014-12-15 Thread David Chatterton
Note:

If, when playing a video through Videos, the monitor is unplugged, the
HDMI option disappears from the Play sound through listing.

When another HDMI device (such as a TV set with HDMI inputs) is plugged
into the Display Port, the HDMI option reappears in the Play sound
through listing. Sound output can be switched between the options by
highlighting the chosen output. This happens without interrupting the
video playback through the Videos app. However, the Screen Display might
need reconfiguring but that is not the subject of this bug report,
except to note that the Screen Display appears to behave as expected
whilst the Sound does not.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-15 Thread David Chatterton
When the output is directed to an external HDMI monitor and the lead
into the Display Port is unplugged, the HDMI option disappears from the
Sound Output menu leaving just the Speakers highlighted. However,
there is no sound from the Speakers until the highlighted menu item is
clicked with the trackpad pointer. This does not change the
highlighting but does switch the sound back to the speakers.

Plugging the HDMI monitor back in via the Display Port does cause the
HDMI menu item to re-appear in the Play sound through listing but, to
switch the sound back to the HDMI, the menu item does need to be clicked
to highlight it.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-15 Thread David Chatterton
Just another observation:

I stopped the video playout through the TV set and unplugged the Display
Port.

I then did a Shut Down followed by a cold start. Having opened the System
Settings Sound pane, I plugged in the Display Port connector and,
miraculously, the HDMI option appeared in the Play sound through listing.
Selecting the Digital Stereo (HDMI), I was able to successfully test to output
using the Test Sound button. I managed to upset it by selecting the Digital
Surround 5.1 option which it did not like. I could not set it back to Digital
Stereo and the sound remained connected to the internal speakers. I started the
VLC player but found that the HDMI option was no longer listed under the Audio
Audio Devices list. Since this was probably an unfair test, I did a shut
down and a cold start to attempt to recover normality.

On plugging in the Display Port (connected to an HDMI TV set), the Digital
Stereo output reappeared in the listing and I was able to test the sound
accordingly through the TV set - without any playout apps running. Starting
Videos, I was able to direct its sound output either through the speakers or
through the TV set.

I have therefore been unable to reproduce the original fault. I could
assume that the system keeps some history of what has been connected in
the past and uses this to expidite connection to connected devices, as
it seems to do with previously paired Bluetooth headphones.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-15 Thread David Chatterton
I can confirm that unplugging the Display Port when directing sound
through Digital Stereo (HDMI) does cause the Digital Stereo option to be
removed from the listing leaving the Speakers highlighted. The sound is
muted and the Speakers have to clicked to get the sound to play through
them. It would be better if the sound was redirected automatically to
the Speakers, especially when they are the only item listed. Perhaps
this is a clue as to why the sound output options are not necessarily
updated in the Play sound through listing.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-15 Thread David Chatterton
Having done a few cold starts since I discovered the original bug, I
find that I am unable to reproduce the initial failure to connect as the
Sound pane lists the Digital Stereo (HDMI) option as soon as an HDMI
monitor is plugged into the Display Port. This allows the output to be
tested using the Test Sound button, even before an app that outputs
sound is started.

I can only assumed that the system has somehow learned about HDMI having
been encouraged to connect to it using the VLC menu.

It is probably appropriate to close this bug report at this stage.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402194] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2014-12-14 Thread David Chatterton
A further observation today:

Turning the laptop on from cold, the speakers appeared in the Sound pane
as expected. When testing the Videos app, the sound played normally at
first but a few crackles were heard. This seemed to have coincided with
setting the display to Full Screen. The sound from the speakers then
disappeared completely.

On executing a restart, there was nothing listed in the Play sound
through pane. After two further restarts, the Built-in Speakers were
listed but accompanied by settings for HDMI/Video port showing options
of HDMI sound. This persisted after another restart.

I turned on a pair of Bluetooth headphones and these subsequently
appeared in the Play sound through panel with options for Telephony
Duplex (HSP/HFP) or High Fidelity Playback (A2DP) being offered. The
Test Sound button payed the test signal correctly through the
headphones.

When re-selecting Speakers, Built-in Audio, the correct Settings for
Speakers (Balance and Greyed-out Fade and Subwoofer) appeared. The Test
Sound button allowed the left and right speakers to be tested as normal.

This suggests that the kernel loses its connection to the speakers which
is not necessarily reset on restart. However, the operation of switching
between Bluetooth headphones and the speakers does seem to restore the
connection and the correct functionality.

I should be happy to test out the latest kernel software but I need
advice as to how to do this (files to download and commands to execute
via terminal) if anyone is able to help on this.

This bug relates to the internal sound hardware in a Dell XPS 13

today, the Systems Settings Sound Output no longer show the
internal speakers, despite numerous attempts to shut down and restart.

This was solved by re-booting and the
system and speakers behaved as expected.

Now I have the situation that the speakers are not shown in the Sound
Output pane and the Output Volume slider stays at zero and is unable
to be moved with the pointer. The volume control slider in the
dropdown panel from the speaker symbol in the system tray appears to
respond to movement from the pointer and the Fn-F11 F12 keys.
However, with no output device shown, there is no sound output to the
  speakers.

Several attempts to restart the system have failed to restore the
  speaker functionality.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402194] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2014-12-14 Thread David Chatterton
Just another observation: switching back and forth between Speakers and
Headphones sometimes puts the headphones into the Telephony Duplex mode.
Even though the High Fidelity Playback seems to be selectable, the Test
Sound button only results in the Mono test being offered. A workaround
is to turn off the headphones in the Bluetooth drop-down panel and then
turn them back on. The headphones then re- appear in the Play sound
through list with the Settings for Headset showing High Fidelity
Playback and the Test Sound button allowing testing of right and left
hand channels. (If the Telephony Duplex mode is selected, the Test Sound
button allows Mono testing as expected.)

This further suggests that the kernel is not necessarily recognising the
full features of the Bluetooth headset every time that they are
selected.

(Whilst writing this, I am continuing to monitor the sound output of the
Videos app. It appears to be stable without any interference from the
Firefox Web Browser!)

Also, the laptop has warmed up since the previous report when it was
switched on from cold. Hopefully the hardware is not sensitive to
temperature.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402194] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2014-12-14 Thread David Chatterton
Another observation to add to the above.

I switched on the laptop from cold. It seemed to boot up correctly and
the Speakers (Built-in Audio) were showing in the Play sound through
panel of System Settings Sound Input. I started to play a video
through the Videos app and noticed a slight crackling, the sound
playback becoming intermittent. I then switched on a pair of Bluetooth
headphones and, since Bluetooth was on by default, the headphones
immediately connected and started playing the sound track. I then looked
at the System Settings Sound Input panel and found that, although
the Headset was listed under Play sound through, they were not
highlighted; the Speakers remained highlighted instead even though the
sound was coming through the headphones. Using the trackpad to click
between the two caused the sound output to be switched between Speakers
and Headset. (The sound playback has remained clear and free from
crackles since then and continues to play correctly whilst I am typing
this comment using Firefox web Browser.)

The mystery deepens. Perhaps someone who understands the kernel
operation knows where the bug lies. I do hope so.

bootable USB stick.

This was solved by re-booting and the
system and speakers behaved as expected.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402194] [NEW] PCI/internal sound card not detected

2014-12-13 Thread David Chatterton
Public bug reported:

Just to add even more complication to the issue:

Having restarted the system yet again, I find that the Sound Output
pane is now showing the Speakers, Built-in Audio under the Play sound
through list. The Test Sound button now works as expected and the Fn-F11
F12 keys control the Output Volume slider (producing the adjustment
pop from the speakers into the bargain).

The problem really is one of intermittent detection and operation of the
sound hardware.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1402194] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2014-12-13 Thread David Chatterton
The sound system has now taken on a new personality of its own.

The internal speakers appear in the Play sound through list of Output
pane of System Settings Sound along with Headphones, built-in audio
(even though there are no headphones connected. The Test Sound button
works on both these items but produces the same test through the
internal speakers.

The Rhythm Box Music player produces sound out of the built-in speakers
as expected. Connection of a set of Bluetooth Headphones results in them
being listed in the Play sound through list. The Test Sound button works
through these headphones as does the output of the Rhythm Box Music
Player.

If a pair of wired headphones are plugged into the headphone socket,
they are not deteted and the Test Sound button sends its test signal via
the internal speakers. However, if the Bluetooth headphones are selected
in the Play sound through list, the Test Sound button tests are directed
through the Bluetooth headphones as one might expect.

I am inclined to think that the original HDMI output was a red herring.
I have, in the past, got sound to play through the speakers built-in to
an HDMI monitor by connecting the monitor through the video output using
an HDMI adapter. It seems that the sound output system is not very good
at detecting which output devices are connected at any one time. This
might be due to shortcomings in the kernel or for other reasons. Who
knows?

One thing that I can be sure of is that, after restarting the laptop,
the sound system might well be in a new state and not necessarily in the
one that it was in before restarting. There does not appear to be any
consistent behaviour as yet.
