[Touch-packages] [Bug 1287267] Re: "Data usage statistics" not shown

2016-09-27 Thread Jonas G. Drange
Great. Maybe the private Connectivity API can expose this information so
that USS can get a total data usage via an endpoint like
GetHistory(device|type|app, timespan, resolution)?

@Alfonso, is this DBus interface documented somewhere? Can it be broken
down per device, type or app? It would be nice to solve bug 1387047 at
the same time as solving this one.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1620553] Re: OSK becomes unusable as taps are delayed by 1-2 seconds and vibration doesn't occur any more (although gestures continue to work)

2016-09-08 Thread Jonas G. Drange
One of the threads deadlocks inside the haptic handler (which is 100
lines of go, called every time the user e.g. presses the OSK), on a call
to dbus (messageBus.Call()). However, dbus seems to function fine, this
looks like an internal failure in usensord.

Status in usensord package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Krillin, rc-proposed/bq_aquaris.en r422

UPDATE: see comment #5, it turns out it's the haptics plugin doing
SYNC dbus calls and blocking the UI thread when the dbus service does
not reply or the replies come with a big delay

  Description:
All at once taps have become incredibly delayed, by 1 or 2 secs.
Gestures still work ok, no delay there.
Swiping the greeter -> no delay. Tapping numbers to input code on the greeter
--> 2 secs delay. Even though both are parts of unity8. So it doesn't seem to
only be a problem of unity8 clients, but also unity8 itself.
I have no idea why horizontal/vertical swipes would be unaffected, though.

The virtual keyboard is also completely unusable because of the huge
  delay that each tap has.

Also noticed that the vibration is gone, taps don't trigger vibration
  anymore.

Webview also seemed to be unaffected by the delays (although I'm not
entirely sure, the bug is now gone)

I also restarted unity8 and unity8-dash with Mir input logging enabled. That
showed that the touch events were being delivered as expected, no delay.
  restart unity8 MIR_CLIENT_INPUT_RECEIVER_REPORT=log and
  restart unity8-dash MIR_CLIENT_INPUT_RECEIVER_REPORT=log

Restarting lightdm (that forces the restart of unity-system-
  compositor) fixed the issue.

Additional info: I had Mir touchspots visualization enabled, which are
known to cause more stuttering, but I think they're unlikely to be the
cause of this bug, I had them enabled for 2 weeks and haven't noticed
  any problem like this before.

This is the log from a tap on an icon in the shell:

Recently the app installation seems to have degraded quite a lot in
reliability. In most cases I need to trigger an installation twice or
even three times in order to succeed.

For instance just now I wanted to install the untappd scope. On the
first attempt I clicked on the Install button and nothing happened
except that the page became inactive. The progress spinner at the
bottom was still spinning, but all the page content was disabled. The
progress bar never appeared. Eventually I had to press the back button
and then reenter the page. I clicked install again, the progress bar
started. While waiting I've read through the comments, when I scrolled
up to the top again, the progress bar was at 0% and would not move any
more at all. Again, I had to press the back button and re-entered the
page. On the third attempt it succeeded (except the issue that the
progress bar again reverted to 0% after scrolling it out of view and
back in, but eventually this time it changed to the open button.

I opened Updates page to update the OS. I had app updates available
(UI Toolkit gallery, uNav, and one more), I tapped on "Update", the
app downloaded the UITK Gallery update but then got stuck at
  "Installing..."

After a while it was still "Installing" and the Pause/Resume buttons for the
other apps were not working, so I closed the system settings app and launched
it again.

I believe what happened is that the phone ran out of free space while
it was installing the app, and that triggered the bug.

Trying to open the Updates page now leads to an app crash.

Bug description:
Bug #1260712 reports the problem where the D-Bus API for ApplyUpdate()
was changed but system-settings wasn't prepared to handle the change.
During post-mortem discussions, Didier requested that the Rebooting()
signal sent by ApplyUpdate() be changed to return an error message
string instead of a boolean, with the empty string meaning no error.
  This bug tracks that request.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1588349] Re: Checking for updates never finishes on 3G when no updates available

2016-08-31 Thread Jonas G. Drange
Marked this bug as incomplete for System Settings as it's not clear to
me that System Image tells System Settings that it has finished checking
(i.e. timed out if that's the case). We need some sort of signal in
these cases.

If I'm using wi-fi and go to settings and then select updates, "Checking for

update available it shows, otherwise informs about the unavailability of
updates.
But while using mobile data (3G/H) *if there is no update available*, it gets
stuck on the "Checking for updates..." screen and the spinner keeps spinning. I
waited as long as 10-15 minutes.
Note: If there is an update available then the behaviour is normal, i.e.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1588349] Re: Checking for updates never finishes on 3G when no updates available

2016-08-31 Thread Jonas G. Drange
Can reproduce this on the rewrite.

Seems to hang in s-i [1], whereas the UDM group download finishes [2]?

However, with the new panel I can cancel the check and successfully
start a new one. Not sure if this is new, but recovery is possible.

first attempt I clicked on the Install button and nothing happened
except that the page became inactive.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1607835] Re: Failed 'add new connection' records a new connection anyway

2016-08-19 Thread Jonas G. Drange
System Settings is firing-and-forgetting any network created from the
“Other network…” dialog. Not sure there's anything network-manager can
do here. System Settings should, upon error, allow the user to change
the failed network connection, not create a brand new one.

Thanks for reporting this.

Bug description:
When adding a new wireless connection, if an incorrect setting
selection is made the connection fails to add, as expected, with a
warning (e.g. incorrect authentication) - this is the expected
behaviour. However, the connection name gets saved under Settings >
WiFi > Previous networks. This means if you, say, enter an incorrect
password three times when trying to add a connection but get it right
the fourth time, there will be four entries of the network you were
trying to add, each suffixed by a number. The consequence is that in
future the device fails to connect to that network when it is in
range. Current solution is to forget all entries of the network and
add it again (and get all settings right on the first try).

Ubuntu Touch needs way to switch external keyboard layout

Bug description:
Ubuntu Touch OTA 10.1 on BQ Aquaris M10 FHD

Currently, there is no way (or I could not find one) to switch
keyboard layout, when external keyboard is connected to the device.
Tried possible "default" combinations like: Alt+Shift, Ctrl+Shift,
  Ctrl+Space, without luck.

With the help of PaulfraaOSAA on #ubuntu-touch figured out how it is possible
too switch (workaround):
One keeps settings with external keyboard layouts open.
When one needs to switch layout of external keyboard, [s]he "just"
  - switches to layout settings window
  - moves needed layout to top of the list
  - switches back to application window and continues typing...

This is... Well... Very very far from usable, especially for non-latin
alphabet based languages, like Russian. Please introduce possibility
to configure layout switcher and use keyboard to switch layouts.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1567389] Re: OpenVPN connections should allow username and password

2016-04-25 Thread Jonas G. Drange
@skyflyer, you can look at the NM config file, but I wouldn't recommend
trying to edit those files? Why would you need to do this? Maybe we
could cater for this use case in the spec/UI.

@tpayer or gregoryopera: do you have a chance to test silo 8? A silo is
a PPA, but there are risks involved in testing, so it's okay if you
don't have a chance.

We could certainly tell syncevolution (is that the correct place?) to
check this, but it would be better if it could do this independently
from System Settings. If we implement NITZ (automagic timezone
selection), the time zone could change without System Settings knowing

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1549733] Re: SystemSettings Language view: hitting Space on HW keyboard triggers switch even when it (or its list item) does not show any visual focus frame

2016-04-11 Thread Jonas G. Drange
Should we do something about this in System Settings, or is the fix in
UITK also a fix for System Settings?

  Nexus7, rc-proposed, r373

  Ubuntu UI Toolkit version r1795

  How to reproduce:
  1) Connect bluetooth keyboard
  2) Open system settings
  3) Open Language & Text view
  4) Press tab until the n-th switch shows its focus frame
  5) Now tap (using touchscreen) on the m-th list item, with m < n (tap on the
list item, not on the switch of that list item)
NOTE: It is important that m < n, the bug will not trigger on listitems that
have not been focused at least once!
  6) At this point the focus frame around the n-th switch has disappeared
  7) Now press Space on the keyboard

  Expected outcome:
Nothing, because there is no focus frame anywhere on the screen

  Actual outcome:
The switch of the m-th list item is triggered, even though that list item or
switch were not showing any focus frame

we add it to the spec and add it to ubuntu-settings-components.

What does this mean, that you are using a Nexus 4 that has rc-proposed
from the BQ channel installed?

Hotspot doesn't currently work [1] and it has nothing to do with software,
so a change of channels won't fix it. We explicitly exclude the device name
from having a hotspot setup UI.

I'm sorry about this. Hotspot is supported on our other phones.

Bug description:
Hello, I just completed a quick review of the click source and the
unity-scope-click source and behaviours, and found some opportunities
  for improvement.

Debian, and Ubuntu, rely upon signed repository files with
cryptographic hashes of packages to provide both integrity and
authenticity checks for the packages hosted on that repository.

The click framework and the unity-scope-click discovery and
installation tool do not use signed repository files, nor do they have
signatures of any sort on downloaded packages. The only integrity and
authenticity checks are provided by the use of HTTPS. The click
verify command will check files within the archive against MD5sums
stored inside the archive but the click verify command is not used
during package installation. (This is suitable for validating
  integrity against accidental changes only.)

While it appears that unity-scope-click properly uses HTTPS to
download package metadata and packages, HTTPS alone is insufficient
  for our needs:

  - Someone in a position to create new certificates at any of several
hundred certificate authorities could create certificates purporting
to be our update servers. This actual problem has been discovered in
the wild with several certificate authorities issuing wild-card
certificates or even certificates with signing authority.

  - X.509 is extremely complicated; TLS is extremely complicated. Flaws
  in both are inevitable.

  - HTTPS prevents the use of caching.

  - HTTPS only 'works' for data-in-motion; it is useless for data-at-
  rest integrity and authenticity checks.

I have not yet reviewed the tools that application authors will use to
upload their packages to our distribution servers but note in passing
that most of these issues are also issues for adding packages to our
update servers -- packages in flight within our network can be
corrupted for many reasons, packages on disk can be corrupted for many
reasons. A signature mechanism can protect against internal network
faults, storage faults, and provide assurance months or years later
that an uploaded package was uploaded by someone in control of a
  corresponding private key.

  Thanks

them are in the living room, one in my bedroom. When I'm in the
bedroom my MX4 is normally trying to connect to one of the "wrong"

  performance.

First, it should automatically connect to the strongest network
  available.

Second, there should be a way to prioritise my networks. In my case
one is a "VPN" network where all traffic is routed through Singapore.
This is essential when you need it and nightmarishly slow when you
don't. Despite my VPN and non-VPN networks having the same signal
strength, I need a way to tell my phone to preferentially connect to
  the non-VPN network when possible.

On the desktop, we save the city name the user picks alongside the ISO
timezone name. Specifically, it's stored in gsettings:
  "com.canonical.indicator.datetime" schema, key "timezone-name". It's
stored like "TIMEZONE NAME" -- that is, the ISO timezone followed by
one space, followed by the user visible name for that timezone.

Indicator-datetime and unity-control-center already support that key.
We should too (I guess we should set it in addition to calling
org.freedesktop.timedate1.SetTimezone). It might mean extending the
time-date plugin's SetTimezone call to take two arguments -- the
  timezone and the name.

This change should be coordinated with unity8, which also sets the
timezone on the first device boot.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1545945] Re: Selection flickers to dark grey for a split second before settling on light grey

2016-03-31 Thread Jonas G. Drange
We use some custom code in System Settings, so this may be related to
that. However, you say you can repro it in other places, so we'll mark
Settings as incomplete for now until word gets back from UUITK.

Bug description:
  Nexus7, rc-proposed, r373

  Ubuntu UI Toolkit version r1795

  How to reproduce:
  1) Connect bluetooth keyboard
  2) Open system settings
  3) Open Language & Text view
  4) Press tab until the n-th switch shows its focus frame
  5) Now tap (using touchscreen) another list item in the list
  7) Notice that there is no visual focus frame anymore
  8) Press Tab again

  Expected outcome:
IF tapping on a list item changes the focused item in the view, then that
should be shown to the user using a focus frame (if it makes sense, for
instance if HW keyboard is connected). At that point, Tab can move to the next
item and the user is not surprised

  Actual outcome:
Pressing tab moves the focus to the list item that follows the one the user
has tapped on, but the user did not get any visual hint that focus was moved
from the list item he previously tabbed to, to the item he tapped on
afterwards, and is hence confused.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1538262] Re: Connection to Microsoft Designer Keyboard not possible

Title:
Connection to Microsoft Designer Keyboard not possible

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hello,

I'm trying to connect my Dell XPS 13 9343 to the Microsoft Designer
  keyboard and mouse (Bluetooth 4.0).

Via the GUI Tools I'm unable to connect any bluetooth device
unfortunately. At least using bluetoothctl I managed to connect an old
Logitech bluetooth mouse. When trying to connect the Microsoft mouse
for example the tool returns that the connection was successful
  always.

  [Designer Mouse]# connect C2:01:31:4D:2A:06
  Attempting to connect to C2:01:31:4D:2A:06
  Connection successful
  [CHG] Device C2:01:31:4D:2A:06 Connected: no
  [CHG] Device C2:01:31:4D:2A:06 Connected: yes

Unfortunately it is not useable afterwards. I also tried to trust or
pair it beforehand which didn't change anything.

  The syslog shows the following.

Jan 26 19:37:53 avion kernel: [ 435.845874] NET: Registered protocol family
38
Jan 26 19:37:53 avion bluetoothd[900]: Unable to register GATT service with
handle 0x000e for device C2:01:31:4D:2A:06:
Jan 26 19:37:54 avion bluetoothd[900]: Error reading PNP_ID value: Attribute
requires authentication before read/write
Jan 26 19:38:25 avion kernel: [ 468.649120] Bluetooth: SMP security
requested but not available

Some days ago I managed to connect the mouse after several tries but I
can't reproduce it. With the keyboard I wasn't successful at all.

If there is anything I can do to solve this problem, let me know.

  Thanks and regards,
  lum3n

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1550283] Re: Connectivity VPN API, hard to change active connection

2016-02-26 Thread Jonas G. Drange
** Description changed:

  Reproduce:
Use the API to change an active connection.

  What happens:
I'm fairly sure we need to re-connect after changing e.g. a user name or a
password or a certificate. This means the API consumer is forced to infer from
the “activatable” and “active” whether or not the re-connection attempt was
successful or not.

  What should happen:
A signal called “activationFailed” would help. Emitting this when trying to
establish (going from active = False to active = True) a connection, could be
sufficient.

+ Alternatively: The Connectivity API itself detects the changes and
+ applies them by re-connecting the connection.
+
  Rationale:
Changing routes is something that is very likely to be changed when the
connection is active.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1524400] Re: Use default keymap on creation of surface

2016-02-23 Thread Jonas G. Drange
There was a question in bug 1546282, asking how to configure this from
the command line. The answer is, AFAIK, that the current value (en/us)
is hard coded in Mir. So to change it is not currently possible. If you
know what a silo [1] is, you could install 064 which has all the code
needed for the layout to be changed.

But there is no way to select the correct layout. Ubuntu phone applies
American (qwerty) layout, but this is wrong. My bluetooth keyboard has
German layout (qwertz). While I can easily switch layouts for the
screen keyboard, I cannot do so for the bluetooth keyboard. It is
fixed to American. This renders my keyboard next to useless.

The user should be able to configure keyboard layout for bluetooth
devices just like for the screen keyboard.

How do you propose phones can be shipped with a non-us default keymap in

Maybe we should set this value to “en” so that there's a canonical way

wants “no” to be the default, it could make sense to just override

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1546589] [NEW] VPN Connections are returned in random order

2016-02-17 Thread Jonas G. Drange
Public bug reported:

Connectivity.vpnConnections gives a different order of VPN connections.

Reproduce:
Often.
1. Check output of Connectivity.vpnConnections
2. Reboot phone
3. Re-check output of Connectivity.vpnConnections and compare with 1.

What happens:
The list comes back ['…/3', '…/0', '…/1'] and then maybe ['…/1', '…/0', '…/3']

What should happen:
Somewhere, someone should sort this list before it is consumed by the view
using

ListView {
model: Connectivity.vpnConnections
}

** Affects: indicator-network (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1495553] Re: [System settings] VPN configuration not possible

2016-02-17 Thread Jonas G. Drange
The first phase will land with some functionality held back:

* Bug 1546560: will not be able to set a certificate password.
* Bug 1546559: causes discrepancies between the desired design and the
implementation, namely the OK/Cancel pattern won't work. Instead, only an OK
button will be implemented.
* Bug 1546573: can't set routing configuration on vpn connections.
