[Touch-packages] [Bug 1913698] [NEW] Enabled LDAP, cannot login if user not in /etc/passwd
Public bug reported: I installed nslcd, libnss-ldapd, migration-tools, slapd, ldapscripts. Using the migration-scripts I copied the users to LDAP. getent shadow (as root) shows encrypted passwords and everything works as it should. Lightdm however, doesn't. I'm unable to logon using Xephyr (XDMCP) or locally. As a workaround I can copy the line for the user back into /etc/passwd and then login works. I don't need a line in /etc/shadow, this info comes from LDAP. Is lightdm using some funky stuff to deduce if a user is viable for login that isn't transferred to LDAP? Feature: The latest s390x hardware comes with a new concept for hardware assisted compression/decompression, based on a 'Next Accelerator Function unit' (NXU). This is an on-chip concept, a co-processor for compression available to all cores on the same chip. It provides functions as normal 'problem state' instructions (in other words user space instructions that are directly consumable by libraries and applications) and supports DEFLATE compliant compression/decompression + GZIP CRC/ZLIB Adler. To enable this hardware support for zlib and gzip, zlib needs to be compiled with CFLAGS="-O2 -DDFLTCC -DDFLTCC_LEVEL_MASK=0x7e". The value of 0x7e enables hardware compression for the compression levels 1-6 (out of 0-9). There is a significant business value of having the enablement active by default, since tests on a system with 4 IFLs and hardware compression enabled this way offered (especially for DEFLATE as best case) a speed up of more than 40x. 2. Changes Adding CFLAGS="-O2 -DDFLTCC -DDFLTCC_LEVEL_MASK=0x7e" attributes/macro during build of zlib and gzip. 3. Regression risk The concept is new and comes with IBM z15 and LinuxONE III only and is with that specific and limited to s390x. Hence a potential regressions of this late addition would be limited to s390x and there again with the above changes to zlib (and gzip). In case of unforeseen issues with the NXU hardware component, a fallback to software is done. On top a modified zlib package was build and made available in a PPA for further testing. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails due to useless immediate configuration error when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected

Which is a pointless way to fail at that point, because everything did work out anyway. We have two changes that help address this: * The first one stops immediately configuring multi-arch siblings (e.g. libc6:i386 when it's configuring libc6:amd64). This was not necessary, and caused all the libc6:i386 failures here. * The second change sort of also supersedes the first one: It just ignores any errors from immediate configuration, relying on the fact that it's checked and rectified at a later point if there are unconfigured packages (which is what made all those failures happen spuriously after having successfully installed everything). [Test case] We have one test case in EIPP format in the Debian bug 973305 which was only helped by the second change, not the first one. Run /usr/lib/apt/planners < eipp.log and check there are no errors. TODO: It's unclear if the APT from proposed installed in the live session will fix the installer, needs investigation, but would make a useful test case. [Regression potential] It's imaginable that we missed something somewhere and some path that checked for a set error doesn't check it anymore, and we report success when we hit an error, but it seems unlikely. Behavior of --simulate changes. This used to fail before as well, and will now only produce a warning. We don't believe that is a reason of concern. [Groovy SRU] The groovy SRU is a sync of the 2.1.11 micro release from Debian unstable which also incorporates changes to the documentation: A typo fix, replacing focal with groovy in examples, and minor Dutch manual pages translation updates. We do not have test cases for the documentation changes, and we do not consider there to be a huge regression potential. As long as they build, they should be readable - maybe some words are wrong in the translation, who knows. [Original bug report] Test Case 1. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails due to useless immediate configuration error when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected
Very superficial report, but methodical. Installed and booted OK this time, from install as similar as possible to process that encountered bug. Differences: 1. Installed from livedisk Ubuntu still running after install failure, rather than direct from boot. 2. Did not create partitions, but reformatted (same) destination. 3. Did not ask for proprietary third party drivers. So suspect the issuse is indeed in the the drivers and probably the NVidia one, from past experience. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to apt in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1871268 Title: Installation fails due to useless immediate configuration error when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected Status in Ubuntu CD Images: Fix Released Status in apt package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in apt source package in Bionic: In Progress Status in apt source package in Focal: Fix Released Status in apt source package in Groovy: Fix Released Status in apt package in Debian: Unknown Bug description: [Impact] Installations that really succeeded would then fail because APT could not immediately configure a package. Which is a pointless way to fail at that point, because everything did work out anyway. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1913855] [NEW] Failure to pass system check and present login screen
Public bug reported: I'm reporting this against xorg, because of where the problem occurs, as indicated below, I can't tell if the problem is with xorg, lightdm or light-locker. The system is a Dell Optiplex 745 single-booting to Xubuntu 20.04 up-to-date as of today. I replaced one of 2 monitors, the one rotated to portrait orientation, with a higher resolution monitor. Started the system, logged in as another user and changed the desktop background however, when I then logged out and restarted the system, it behaved normally until it displayed the usual /dev/sda1: clean, x/x files, /x blocks on both monitors. The prompt remained for a few seconds, slowly blinked off and on 6 times, and then remained with no further activity. The system works fine if I boot from a Xubuntu 18.04 DVD (I didn't have a 20.04 DVD, and this is the only machine with a burner). On another machine, I determined that the system was booting, because the machine was visible on the network, and its shared folders were accessible. I could get to a login prompt and log on using Alt+F1 to F6. Alt-F7 returned me to the file system check prompt. I was able to start xorg after logging on with startx, and changing all settings for the new monitor, everything worked normally until logging out, which of course returned me to the command line where I had given the command startx. If I log out requesting a restart, the system reboots, but still stops at the same place every time. That behavior hadn't changed the next day. I can use the machine, but only by selecting a terminal, logging as myself or the other user and giving the startx command. I have been unable to find anything on the Internet that corrects the problem. Since the problem first started, two crashes have occurred and I allowed them to be reported; however, they were light-locker crashes. I reinstalled lightdm and light-locker, but that made no difference. I installed gdm3, which works fine, but switching back to lightdm with: sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 sudo dpkg --configure lightdm resulted in: dpkg: error processing package lightdm (--configure): package lightdm is already installed and configured Errors were encountered while processing: lightdm So I can't really be sure if the problem is with xorg, lightdm or light- locker, but since there are no error messages and everything else works fine, it's clearly a bug, if a strange one. I do not relish the idea of having to reinstall Xubuntu; so for the time being, I'll use gdm3, though I prefer lightdm's ability to properly display backdrops and use the two monitors properly extended (with gdm3, the mouse moves down the left portrait monitor before moving onto the right monitor where gdm3 sees fit to put the logon dialog). The next thing I'll try is autoremoving lightdm rebooting a few times and then reinstalling it... Because of the absence of error messages and information even suggesting why X isn't starting, I have no idea what other information about my system might be useful to you, but if you need something additional, I'll try to provide it.
