Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
A problem with this is that whilst it's relatively easy to get all the proprietary software for free from torrent sites, there is no motive to try libre software other than from a moral point of view. So you could try to get youngsters to try Ardour and free synths, but if they can get Reason and Cubase and all those fabulous VST plugins, for free, they'll not see any reason to change. Awakening a sense of overriding morality is what seems to me to be the need. When people think along the lines of so what if I can get proprietary software for free, that just taints me and all I produce we might start to get somewhere, but awakening that in people who live in a world where morality is regarded as a quaint affectation for weak people will be a Herculean task. A good proportion of Linux users don't care about proprietary vs libre - I know, I've argued with lots of them. They just don't want to know and get aggressive if you press the point. A few months back I came across a review for yet another Debian Testing based distro (people seem to have forgotten what Testing means) stuffed with all the proprietary drivers and libraries and plugins. The creator became most aggressive when I suggested that he had added nothing to Linux but had, in fact, only made things worse, as he hadn't even bothered to leave a note explaining the differences and offering his users a chance to make an informed choice. All he had done is compact the idea that Linux means avoiding paying Microsoft and nothing else. Convenience trumps morality in this day and age.

[Trisquel-users] Network issue with Trisquel 6.01
Hi everyone, i'm having a big issue with trisquel 6 with my Aspire E1-522 A6 5200. Trisquel doesn't recognize my network card, it doesn't allow me to connect my pc on the internet. Anyone knows how to solve it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I want to share this interview with RMS
Interesting point of view expressed in that last link. I've not heard him speak before. To my mind there's a minor problem with his point of view. He says that the behaviour of large software based Corporations is froth rather than substance and that to focus on that is to waste time. It reminds me of one of Chomsky's talks where he says, when asked about the Boycott Israel Campaign (that seeks to force Israel economically to change its policy towards the Palestinians), that such campaigns are a waste of time and would probably, if anything, make things worse. He then cites the end of apartheid in South Africa as only having occurred when Governments began to put South Africa under sanctions. The point being avoided here is that it was individuals campaigning for an end to apartheid and individually boycotting South African products, that grew into a movement big enough to gain Government attention, that caused Governments to start applying real sanctions. Prior to individuals calling for an end to apartheid the British Government, nor the US Government for that matter, cared in the slightest about the plight of those on the rough end of apartheid. On the contrary, South Africa was subject to the British crown for some time; their legal system subject to the UK's. Much money was made in gold and diamonds and you can bet the British Establishment got a hefty slice of that cake. So, to bring it back to the point in hand, there is a spreading consciousness about Corporate behaviour - tax evasion, little if any accountability before the law, perversion of the political and media systems, privacy and surveillance, etc, and were that to be derailed into a political debate about rights then those Corporations would get to carry on with less attention and that is to their benefit. Any political debate, if it doesn't end up as an intellectual knife fight, which is what it almost certainly would do, would lead to Charters and Bills of Rights, that won't have any legal force and would, even if they did, take decades to get through the court cases and the appeals and the waiting for the legislature to define certain concepts and the retrials and the final rulings, before any of us knew where we stood. So I'm extremely suspicious of intellectuals who seem to me to be saying look elsewhere, this is not the answer when history shows that it is indeed the answer, or at least, the first step towards a good answer. He's right to say there needs to be a political/moral debate but, to my mind, diverting attention away from the currently coalescing centers of information control and economic power is misdirection. And that makes my alarm bells ring.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Laser Printer compatible with Trisquel or totally free distributions ?
For example, if I buy, on ThinkPenguin.Com : - this computer (with Trisquel 6 / 7 / ...) and - this printer, will it (be possible to make them) work together ? The idea is to use one computer with Trisquel (without any proprietary software) and any peripheral (printer, mouse, external hard discs, usb keys, etc.). If I buy this printer, can I print only black-white when the yellow is empty ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
I hope they will keep using GNU/Linux and not come back to proprietary operating systems. Would be good that others towns and cities adopt Trisquel. ^^
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
All of you, read this: http://techrights.org/2014/08/19/munich-astroturf/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Laser Printer compatible with Trisquel or totally free distributions ?
The printer will not work in Trisquel 6 (at least out of the box) because it requires a newer hplip version than what coms with Trisquel 6.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cannot install GNOME Shell on Trisquel 7 I18N 64-bit.
I'm using gnome-shell Trisquel 7 I18N 64-bit, so I know it should work. Try updating you packages before installing: sudo aptitude update I'm more familiar with the output of aptitude, so try installing with it: sudo aptitude install gnome-shell You don't need to install the Mutter package. It's useful only, if you want to use Mutter without GNOME Shell.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Laser Printer compatible with Trisquel or totally free distributions ?
Ah !?! isn't there a way to make them (laser printer and trisquel) work together ? I don't want to come back to inkjet printers.
[Trisquel-users] numeric keypad
Hi, I would like to fix my numeric keypad because it does not display numbers for user loggin session in trisquel 6 . Could anyone lend me a hand , please? Thx.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Laser Printer compatible with Trisquel or totally free distributions ?
Like Chris said, it will work at a basic level out-of-the-box, just not with all of its features. To get full support, you can either do the thing he mentioned to get full support on Trisquel 6, wait for Trisquel 7 to be released, or update to the Trisquel 7 pre-release.
Re: [Trisquel-users] numeric keypad
Does it work if you enable Numlock? This can be done automatically by installing the package numlockx.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Network issue with Trisquel 6.01
HI, thanks for responding, i had to unistall trisquel (wich was indual boot with ubuntu) because i had problems with the UEFI bios, so, i reinstalled ubuntu. This is the output from ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Re: [Trisquel-users] Network issue with Trisquel 6.01
If there isn't a a solution, could you consult me for some hardware compatible with Trisquel and GnewSense? I'm assembling a Pc for my home and i want to install on it Trisquel and GnewSense in Dualboot. I want that PC to be Free as in Fredoom! :D
Re: [Trisquel-users] Network issue with Trisquel 6.01
The easiest way to get hardware compatible with free/libre software is Think Penguin: https://libre.thinkpenguin.com That store only sells hardware that works with entirely free/libre systems.
Re: [Trisquel-users] numeric keypad
obscurité has first tried to get some help on the French-speaking forum: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/paver-numerique-d%C3%A9faillant-pour-login-session He is actually talking about the numeric keypad of a virtual keyboard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_keyboard
Re: [Trisquel-users] numeric keypad
Hm... I did some testing with Onboard (not in the login screen, I don't know how to get the on-screen keyboard to pop up there), and what I found was kind of weird: I found that I was able to type numbers with the numpad, but only if before that I pressed the Num Lock key each time. Otherwise, it treated them like their corresponding non-number equivalents (e.g. left arrow for 4 and right arrow for 6). Could that be the problem?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Laser Printer compatible with Trisquel or totally free distributions ?
I have a Samsung ML-1610 (monochrome) - it's worked perfectly with every distro since the day I acquired it, about 10 years ago. Samsung used to provide Linux drivers (they still might), but it works 'out of the box' these days.

Yes. Echoed here also.. . http://news.softpedia.com/news/Munich-Switching-to-Windows-from-Linux-Is-Proof-that-Microsoft-Is-Still-an-Evil-Company-455510.shtml
Re: [Trisquel-users] Network issue with Trisquel 6.01
That is terrible hardware when it comes to free software support. You will not get any 3D acceleration from the Radeon card and your Wifi chipset is not among the ones Linux-libre can drive (it requires a proprietary firmware): https://trisquel.info/en/forum/searching-open-wifi#comment-54590 See this post as for more information on acquiring a Wifi card/adapter that would perfectly work with Trisquel: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/request-wlan-card-support#comment-55424 As for the graphics, you can get an nVidia card. The support for those cards is far from perfect though. The most recent models may be even less supported than your current Radeon card (fallback on the vesa driver). You can also settle for your current 2D display and remember than, in the future, you want to buy Intel processors. Linux-libre perfectly handles their integrated graphical chipsets.
[Trisquel-users] Re : numeric keypad
I have numlockx package already installed and password is not recognized.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Network issue with Trisquel 6.01
Actually, your wireless will work with only free software. It's just that you need a newer kernel which has the driver. You can get a libre kernel from Trusty by running: $ sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-trusty
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cannot install GNOME Shell on Trisquel 7 I18N 64-bit.
I tried this and it didn't work. I get to choose GNOME at login but only loads background and shows network notifications up right corner. sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install gnome-session gnome-shell I then tested this because my thinking was that Trisquel 7 is based on Ubuntu 14.04 and it will probably work. And it did, after the commands above. http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/05/upgrade-gnome-3-12-ubuntu-14-04 Quoting omgubuntu command: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade I have done some testing on a fresh install and this works for me. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging sudo apt-get install gnome-session gnome-shell (Tested logout and choose Gnome. Same as above. Rebooting) sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade (Log out, choosing Gnome and it works) Trisquel 7 20140807 i18 amd64 is running Gnome 3.12.2 here.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Network issue with Trisquel 6.01
Here is a database of hardware if it supports freedom or not. Not much hardware is in that database but choose laptops and choose A premium. Don't forget to read the comments and search a bit more on that machine. http://h-node.org The big things with freedom supporting hardware is graphics card (AMD and Nvidia) and wireless. On laptops the track pad seems to also be a problem some times.

[Trisquel-users] New (first) libre planet in UK
After asking myself why there was not a libreplanet in UK for better part of a year I just created one. I am basically learning as I go along but in case anyone from UK happens to be in the area: please say hi. http://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Ham
Re: [Trisquel-users] Network issue with Trisquel 6.01
There are actually a lot of other problems besides non-free graphics and wireless dependencies. HP, Lenovo/IBM, Toshiba, Sony, Apple, and Dell all use digital restrictions for example. This does happen to mostly impact wireless, but is a distinctly separate issue. What it means is that you can't buy a laptop from one of these companies an expect to be able to replace the wifi card in it with one that is compatible with free software. I highly encourage people to boycott these companies. It goes beyond incompetence or not caring. They are actively working against the user. There are lots of other issues that can impact support that have less to do with proprietary software and more to do with design. For instance software-based switches for turning on/off wifi cards (ie you may have a card that works, but if it's always off, and you can't turn it back on, then the laptop won't work terribly well with GNU/Linux), support for special function keys (adjusting volume/screen brightness), and power management. This is a short list of problems people frequently experience. There are some other older issues that have purportedly cropped up again too relating to DRM that I had thought were permanently solved. However I haven't had time to confirm the claims or look into solving the problem so I'll refrain from going into it. It won't impact most people in either event. You may also run into issues related to restricted boot, but I can't really speak too much about it. I'm not sure how common of a problem it is with off-the-shelf x86 hardware in the worst case situation. At its worst you can brick systems and/or simply not be able to install GNU/Linux. I believe it would also include lesser problems with x86 that simply make loading GNU/Linux more difficult. There are also issues with CPUs related to digital restrictions. While it won't work in Trisquel or any free system today anyway the more systems that ship with the technology in the CPU the easier it becomes for sites to use / arguments to be made for adopting/requiring it. Today you can watch most content on YouTube, but tomorrow that may not be possible if Google implements code that utilizes this technology in the CPU. Avoid Intel CPUs with 'Trusted Computing Technology'. I'm unsure what AMD calls this technology, but a version of it is also present in modern AMD CPUs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Laser Printer compatible with Trisquel or totally free distributions ?
Let me make a small correction about support in Trisquel 6 for this printer. The printer itself will work 'out of the box' in some sense of the meaning. While Trisquel's printing wizard won't auto-detect the right driver the stock postscript driver included in Trisquel 6 will work with it, and as such there is nothing to install. Simply manually selecting the right postscript driver should be all there is to it. I'm pretty sure we've added documentation on this for Trisquel 6 to the support section of our web site. If not send us an email and we'll add it and/or link you to the documentation. * If I said otherwise somewhere let this be a correction. I probably did imply Trisquel 6 wasn't supported, but that would be at least in part wrong. It isn't fully supported out of the box is what I should have said.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Laser Printer compatible with Trisquel or totally free distributions ?
I've had some bad experiences with Samsung printers. It was with one of the early low end laser printers in fact. It's the same with HP I believe. In any event despite Samsung clearly advertising support for Linux, they only provided proprietary drivers for a few distributions. I believe it was Redhat and maybe SUSE. These low end laser printers aren't a good choice for GNU/Linux users. They're generally not postscript compliant, and dependent on some non-free driver. That said if you bought a higher end laser printer years ago there is a much better chance it'll work fairly seamlessly as most of the higher end laser printers traditionally have been postscript compliant making supporting them easy. It is less true today than ever before though. However that said I believe there are still a lot of higher end laser printers with postscript support on the market.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7: Memory leak?
I'm currently testing Trisquel 7 (trisquel_7.0-20140807-i18n_amd64.iso) on VirtualBox 4.3.14 and at times when I occupy the terminal feel a little slow (lag) when working on the same. At other times get me the following message: no talloc stackframe at ../source3/param/loadparm.c:4864, leaking memory I have reviewed the bug track in search of a similar problem but I haven't found anything like that. Does anyone else? Is there any way to check if this is a bug? If this were the case, could someone tell me the procedure to follow to obtain the description of the same?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7: Memory leak?
D'oh! I did not see the answer to my problem until you send my email. Sorry!!! My fault ;) http://listas.trisquel.info/pipermail/trisquel-users/2014-August/036992.html
