'Debian is neither the oldest distro' But the oldest one with a significant userbase. 'nor the sole domain of freedom loving developers.' That depends on what you call 'freedom loving'. However, it is the only big distro which can be used in freedom, offering a 100% free repository.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Touchpad
So far I have been using the Synaptic Package Manager to search for touchpad and testing all of the available packages with no luck. Is there any way to find out which one I should be installing for my particular system? I tinkered around with the synaptiks touchpad program in the accessories menu but wasn't able to configure it to work any better. https://h-node.org/notebooks/view/en/1135/MacBook-2-1---Mac-F4208CAA/1/1/undef/undef/undef/undef/undef/undef/undef/macbook I found this link (my MacBook is actually model 3.1) and I noticed at the bottom it says you need kernel version 3.15 for the touchpad to be pleasant to use. I have worked out Trisquel is using 3.13. So am I right that different distributions use different versions of the Linux kernel and there is no way to currently use 3.15 with Trisquel? I'm starting to think the only way to have a smoother experience will be to get a USB mouse. Could you recommend a good cheap one? Or will most mouses work ok?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Goodbye Trisquel
To be awfully, annoyingly (sorry) exact GnewSense pretty much counts as a copy of one of its editions and Trisquel not too far from being that, and Arch (to which Parabola is tagged in very much the same way, I think) isn't exactly small.:)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Goodbye Trisquel
'To be awfully, annoyingly (sorry) exact GnewSense pretty much counts as a copy of one of its editions and Trisquel not too far from being that' Yeah, that makes my point. What do you want to express with that besides the fact that debian dominates the free software world? 'Arch (to which Parabola is tagged in very much the same way, I think) isn't exactly small.:)' No, Arch isn't exactly small but you can't use it in freedom. You can use parabola but this distro is...right, small! My point was that debian is the only big free software distro, and everything you said shows just that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Touchpad
There's a PPA for newer versions of Linux-libre: http://jxself.org/linux-libre/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Touchpad
Are you on Trisquel 7 or 6? You can find out what version of the kernel you're on with e.g. the commanduname -r Most if not all USB mice will work. On the other hand if you want to get working Bluetooth there's a few options here guaranteed to work with free software https://www.thinkpenguin.com/catalog/wireless-networking-gnulinux If you follow their link on the right hand side of this page, they will donate part of their profits to Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Touchpad
The Macbook touchpad needs a lot of fine-tuning to make it comfortable to use. I installed libreboot on mine (from 2008) and spent half a week trying to find proper settings. I ended up with the Xorg settings described at the end of the section on Macbook 2.1: http://libreboot.org/docs/hcl/index.html#macbook21
Re: [Trisquel-users] Goodbye Trisquel
salparadise You are right! slackware, has a lot of white hairs, it is one of the oldest one early 1993. Dammed I been rap up with Trisquel, unfortunatly my first official distro ever introduced for almost 2 years. is time to move on
[Trisquel-users] Is this ARM64 Open Laptop Concept a free hardware notebook?
http://wiki.vero-apparatus.com/ARM64OpenLaptopConcept Is this fsf free hardware? What is performance compared to a x86 duo core mainboard? There is the matter of the gpu, is it solvable by adding a free hardware gpu?
Re: [Trisquel-users] long-term sustainability of Trisquel -- what if we lose core developers?
SuperTramp83 None taken, you have a point. Here is a list of common bugs that I encounter. I did tried trisquel 7 in dualboot before, the machine I was uisng had already trisquel 6, most parts as video card, WIFI are hardware purchase from thinkpenguin store working flawless on my 1-5. The problems, that I encounter was a few nasty one's, the VIDEO was choppy, the sound was non existent and when trying to connect to the Lan did not recognized the MOTHER BOARD nickcard. That includes the WIFI. The version of Trisquel 7, that I downloaded, was the experimental one. For that reason, I won't even get close to trisquel 7, until the bugs are squash. and exterminated. Another issue was on trisquel 6 updates, I did not like the DEVELOPER TOTALIRISM AND HIS DEFINITION OF FREE how the user should use A-BROWSER. I should be the one user deciding, what I want! Specially, when it comes to how; should enhance and secure my browsing experience. I believe the user, should have the tools and means of information PUBLICLY AVAILABLE TO BE read at ANYTIME, not embedded onto the browser, which is controlled by the developer in some dark, HUMID AND mystical SPANIARD WINE cellar Lucky for me, some friends show me, how to navigate around that type and kind of browsing totalirism experience. My friends indicated that some developers suffer from lack of brain equilibrium. Remenber, that trisquel was first official distro, ever used. Since then I have grown into it and yes, I'm piss at that crazy conquistador.. respectfully, This is just my opinion.
Re: [Trisquel-users] long-term sustainability of Trisquel -- what if we lose core developers?
Well, we're free to use debootstrap/netinstall to perform an installation (i.e. without browser to begin with) - and you can install Icecat/Midori/Epiphany/links/etc and/or remove Abrowser even from a LiveCD installation so I don't see any kind of freedom breached to begin with browser-wise. Quidam gives you what he think is best but you can change it (or just use debootstrap) and he won't have a right to stop you from doing it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is this ARM64 Open Laptop Concept a free hardware notebook?
I hope it's free.. ...But, anyway, it's not a laptop..yet.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Goodbye Trisquel
Yes, I do realise that (which is why I wrote sorry - because of how rather pointless the rest of the post was going to be :) Anyway, install the your-freedom package and I reckon Arch can be used in freedom. And, personally, I count free 'clones' of big distros effectively as big as (and pretty much almost exactly the same as otherwise) whatever was taken from upstream (i.e. GnewSense=Debian 6, Trisquel= Its editions' respective Ubuntu version upstream, Parabola=Arch, BLAG=whatever version of Fedora a version of it is based on, etc) So in my book Parabola and GnewSense are pretty big - not that I expect anybody to agree with me on such a measure of a distro's size (though I still think it's the most technically relevant way of doing so in terms of which forum pages to search through to solve problems, which distro to enter in the search engine when solving problems/finding out whether something is supported, which Wiki and guides to read, whether a PPA can be used on a particular edition of Trisquel, and more importantly what (versions of) packages are in the repos, etc). For example, I install Parabola by reading the Archwiki, solve problems in GnewSense by searching XYZ problem debian squeeze, and a Trisquel 7 problem by searching ZAB problem ubuntu trusty, and it seems to serve me well.
Re: [Trisquel-users] desktop freezes when trying to use compiz in Trisquel 7
You were right guys, compton was the problem, killing the process does help :) davidnotcoulthard , I didn't want to uninstall compton, I will like to leave one Trisquel session untouched. Sachin, editing trisquel-desktop.session line: RequiredComponents=gnome-panel;gnome-settings-daemon;gnome-screensaver;metacity; with RequiredComponents=gnome-panel;gnome-settings-daemon;gnome-screensaver;compiz; Seems not to be enough. When I tried to log using that session Exec=gnome-session --session=gnome-compiz the desktop simply did not start. What I've been doing is start compiz --replace on my start up applications. So I guess that could work for now. Thank you all for your help :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] long-term sustainability of Trisquel -- what if we lose core developers?
Do you have a guide or documentation for this recommendation you are suggesting? Respectfully
Re: [Trisquel-users] typeahead (interactive search) one key delay
Sachin was able to help me :) I'm really grateful. So the problem had something to do with the ibus-daemon, I decided to kill it by adding killall ibus-daemon to my stat up applications. As long as you don't use different keyboard layouts (or need to type in a phonetic language such as Japanese using English letters) I think it is fine to disable it. Thank you all.
[Trisquel-users] Re : typeahead (interactive search) one key delay
IBus can create troubles. I had some with Emacs. You need not kill the IBus daemon at startup though! Just choose none as an input system in the first tab of Language support (my translation from French: it might be called otherwise) in System settings.
[Trisquel-users] No Handbrake in Belenos?
Handbrake - a very convenient DVD ripping program - was available in Toutatis, but I can't find it in Belenos: http://packages.trisquel.info/search?suite=defaultsection=allarch=anysearchon=nameskeywords=handbrake Is the program nonfree or is this an oversight?
Re: [Trisquel-users] IceDove replaced Thunderbird.
I seem to recall there being an issue installing Lightning for this version of Icedove. Does anyone have experience with this?
Re: [Trisquel-users] No Handbrake in Belenos?
Please open an Issue/Bug - handbrake for Toutatis was taken from a ppa. From Trusty onwards it's in Universe so the Trisquel arrangements need changing.
[Trisquel-users] Re : No Handbrake in Belenos?
Done: https://trisquel.info/fr/issues/12882 Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] typeahead (interactive search) one key delay
Cool, thanks, I just couldn't find that option before.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Touchpad
uname -r 3.13.0-39-lowlatency Eemeli, were the Xorg settings you ended with decent enough? This setting looks like what I need: # The next two values determine how much pressure one needs # for tapping, moving the cursor and other events. Option FingerLow 10 Option FingerHigh 15 How do I get to these settings? I haven't seen some of these in the system settings. Command line?
Re: [Trisquel-users] JavaScript code must be eliminated, not just made free
What kinds of clients do you work with? I work for a university, so my clients are usually non-profit organizations or faculty members. They have no problem with releasing all the code I write for them under the GPL.
[Trisquel-users] The Almost Completely Open Source Laptop Goes on Sale
Is this fsf free hardware? http://www.wired.com/2014/04/novena/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Goodbye Trisquel
Well, I reccommend Gnewsense or Parabola, rather than Debian. Debian isn't the worst thing ever, at least. It has a non-free repository, though, so be cautious.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Goodbye Trisquel
Well, Parabola'supdates come a wee bit often. And if you want Debian 7 you can't go for GnewSense...(when will they start their Wheezy-based version?)
Re: [Trisquel-users] The Almost Completely Open Source Laptop Goes on Sale
Is it eligible to get the FSF's RYF certification? In order to give it their stamp of approval in the form of that Respects Your Freedom logo, the software for the graphics hardware needs to be worked out. They raised money for as a stretch goal in the crowdfunding campaign. Once (if?) the graphics hardware is worked out to make it sufficient... then the question becomes the distro it ships with. Probably Debian GNU/Linux. In addition to the graphics they'd need to swap out the distro for an FSF-approved one. None of them currently support ARM though. This is the same issue that prevented the Lemote Yeeloong from being able to get the FSF's RYF certification because Lemote didn't ship it with, say, gNewSense and the FSF can give it their stamp of approval if they can't give the software that ships with it their stamp of approval. Hopefully at least one of the FSF-endorsed distrosw ill add support for this CPU architecture.
Re: [Trisquel-users] IceDove replaced Thunderbird.
Actually, the one for Wheezy works as well, so try that instead.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Goodbye Trisquel
Not too long ago the big question was When will they start their Trusty-based version? (I jest, I jest...)
Re: [Trisquel-users] IceDove replaced Thunderbird.
And there it is! Thanks much developers et al!
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel in Eee Pc 2 Gb hard drive
The trisquel live usb and the Mini live usb load nicely, even the wifi works! but i just have 2 Gb of space! what the hell i was thinking when i bought this crap many years ago, i had it in the closet with out use, but im very poor now and i need this machine to work ! what could i do? this is the exact machine that i have http://www.amazon.com/7-Inch-Display-Mobile-Processor-Preloaded/dp/B00114T9WY i feel like crap
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel in Eee Pc 2 Gb hard drive
The device only came with 2GB. I don't understand the problem. You could use an external USB for extra storage, or an SD card, etc, etc.
