[Trisquel-users] Syndie? Distributed forums?
So recently I started looking for good software to use for group discussion, something like a forum. I don't want to rely on an third party provider, though, so I looked for something decentralized. I found Syndie https://www.syndie.de/index.htmls and I thought it sounded very nice, so I installed it to try it out. I have used it only for a short while, but I wasn't really able to do anything so far. I'm a bit confused about how things work internally, the program crashes sometimes and the UI is confusing and features poorly drawn icons. I find the idea very interesting, though. Does anyone in here have experience with Syndie? Or do you know about similar software that allows for decentralized forums and discussion? Please, do share your knowledge! :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Group chat
I don't have a solution to your problem but maybe a program like Gribble could be modified to do it: https://wiki.bitcoin-otc.com/wiki/GPG_Identity_Checking https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Gribble Andrew

Re: [Trisquel-users] iwlist scan problem
Do you know this particular card works?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Security Enhanced Linux Kernel? Eh? What's going on here? O.o!
nah..
Re: [Trisquel-users] iwlist scan problem
The card works. The signal is weak. You need to increase the signal. How? I have no idea other then some pretty obvious stuff like getting the lappy near the router or pointing the antennas of the router in the lappy's direction. Or buying another wifi adapter (they are very cheap on ebay. you want an atheros AR9xxx or AR5xxx). cheers
Re: [Trisquel-users] Security Enhanced Linux Kernel? Eh? What's going on here? O.o!
HuangLao, I don't feel I can learn anything all from your numerous debates. It seems like all of your arguments are always based on speculations and aren't backed by any evidence. When you provide references they typically have little to do with your claims, are just some discussion between some random people or sometimes even oppose your claims. I think all of your disputes mainly contribute to misinformation, as most people can be bother to check for the facts you aren't providing. All this mainly serves as FUD, even if that's not your intention. I would still love to see a statement by the developers of AppArmor, where they say they made AppArmor because there are US government/spy agencies behind the SELinux project. This seems very interesting to me, but unfortunately I doubt there's such statement and it's much more likely it's your own explanation for things, only based on broad speculations. About conspiracies I find it really annoying that conspiracy nowadays is primarily associated with this kind of debates, where everything is speculated and no one is bothered to do any real research and provide any concrete evidence to support or refute claims. Debates where everything is just speculations based on references by to other speculations - numerous speculations stacked upon each other. You shouldn't use conspiracy or conspiracy theory when you just want to say that someone isn't providing any evidence. There are real conspiracies in the world, between companies, governments and others, and it's hardly surprising too if you think about it. But when conspiracy is associated primarily with this kind of debates, it starts imply that all conspiracies are made up, so people start to believe that such things just never happen.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Syndie? Distributed forums?
I don't know anything about Syndie but AFAIK you need I2P in order to run Syndie. Did you already successfully install and setup I2P? If not, that might be the first thing you want to try. Then you can also directly ask questions on the Syndie forum (http://forum.i2p/viewforum.php?f=29), which is only accessible over I2P.

For the people too busy or too lazy to read the whole thing: What's the statement of this text in a nutshell? ;-)

[Trisquel-users] Libreboot and grub
Hi guys I know this is more a libreboot issue but I try. My computer is a X200 from gluglug: I've followed this guide http://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/encrypted_trisquel.html without problems (manually adding parameteres on grub I can boot my new installation correctly). I'm only sticked at the end trying to modify grub.cfg: as suggested I've read this one http://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/grub_cbfs.html but I can't find both /boot/grub/libreboot_grub.cfg or /grub/libreboot_grub.cfg . Is correct to edit this file with an encrypted partition ? I'm not quite sure on how to edit the grub.cfg file. Is It necessary to flash libreboot ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Syndie? Distributed forums?
Syndie just told me that it's reccomended to run I2P. I don't know if it's a requirement or not, but if it is, then that would probably be a deal breaker for me. (Not that I can't use I2P, but I'd like something that's not as complex. Dealing with I2P AND how Syndie works seems a bit too much.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Logjam browser fix breaks Trisquel's website
Disable DHE disables ephemeral Diffie-Hellman cipher suites that are vulnerable to the logjam attack: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/disable-dhe/?src=search I have suggested to Rubén Rodríguez who maintains GNU IceCat, to consider to implement this add-on in GNU IceCat 31.8.0.
[Trisquel-users] Slightly off topic - RMS to speak in London, UK on 4th July
Unfortunately, you can't just attend his talk or at least you have to pay to attend the full day which is pricey at £88 GBP (£56 for students). I did contact the tcij about this and they said this was the case. On the other hand the other talks do look very interesting so it might be interesting to listen to the other speakers as well. The link giving the title of his talk is here. http://www.tcij.org/summer-conference/class-information/#Freedom For bookings ... http://www.tcij.org/summer-conference I will look to go if I can so if any other Trisquel users based in London intend to go then do let me know. It would be nice to meet up.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Security Enhanced Linux Kernel? Eh? What's going on here? O.o!
Well, there's a difference between a conspiracy and a conspiracy theory. Conspiracy theory is pretty much ingrained as a label for this kind of nonsense: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhWpP-vPUcQ I think most people can understand this important distinction and that real conspiracies (like Watergate, or the various digital restriction agreements) exist, so it's not necessary to reject this definition of conspiracy theory. As for the use of the term conspiracy in this flame war, HuangLao was accusing people behind systemd of conspiring with Red Hat to push systemd on the community, so I don't think the term conspiracy was misplaced here.
[Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
A little over a year ago, I built a new computer from scratch that has an ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 motherboard. For getting online, I used the ThinkPenguin 802.11n wireless USB dongle instead of the Realtek 8111F Gigabit LAN port that by default tries to use the r8169 firmware. Unlike Ubuntu's kernel, the Linux Libre kernel deblobs the r8169 firmware which is considered non-free and since I never bothered with the ethernet until now, it wasn't an issue. So why did I switch back to ethernet? I work from home and I have a detached garage that I use as my mancave/office and have been getting terrible wireless reception. Maybe it was the distance or since my house is old and solid, it could be that. Or it could be the Motorola cable modem/router combo didn't want to play nice with the dongle. I started looking into powerline ethernet where you send the internet through the power in your house by using two outlet plugs. One is in an outlet near my router attached to the router with a CAT6 and the other is in my detached garage with another CAT6 running to my PC. So to get to the point of this post is that if your motherboard has a Realtek ethernet that uses the r8169 firmware by default and is deblobbed in Trisquel, there's the r8168-dkms package that works the same. This is what I did to get my ethernet running in Trisquel 7: 1.) If using Trisquel 7 with the 3.13 (default) kernel, download r8168-dkms from http://packages.trisquel.info/belenos/r8168-dkms. If using Trisquel 7 with the 3.19 (Vivid) kernel, download r8168 from http://packages.ubuntu.com/vivid/r8168-dkms. I know I am pointing to an Ubuntu package, but it should be free and in my experience, plays nicer with the 3.19 kernel since the 3.19 kernel is the default in Ubuntu 15.04/Vivid. 2.) Blacklist r8169 driver by adding r8169 to the bottom of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf as sudo/su and save. 3.) Make sure dkms is installed via sudo apt-get install dkms if not already installed. 4.) Install r8168-dkms_8.037.00-1_all.deb (3.13 kernel) or r8168-dkms_8.039.00-1_all.deb (3.19 kernel) 5.) Add r8168 to the bottom of /etc/modules as sudo/su and save. 6.) If there are issues, run sudo dpkg-reconfigure r8168-dkms 7.) May or may not have to reboot after blacklisting, installing DKMS package, or dpkg-reconfigure I haven't tested this with the 4.x kernels offered at http://jxself.org/linux-libre/ but since the 3.13 and 3.19 kernels are offered in the Trisquel 7 repos and have the same naming conventions and versions as the Ubuntu ones, the r8168-dkms package should play nice with them.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Syndie? Distributed forums?
Judging from the chart provided on their website (https://www.syndie.de/index.html) I would say it needs at least some sort of anonymizer (like Tor, Freenet or I2P). I2P isn't actually too complex. You might just want to give it a try.
Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
I do have a correction since I cannot edit my original post. For #2, it should be blacklist r8169 instead of just r8169 but I assume most of you knew that. :-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could systemd be an inconvenient on portability?
Useless Google+ with it's minimalistic design. It doesn't show the date! Any idea on when was published? Just to keep a mental timeline.

Hi Jade, you beat me to it. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could systemd be an inconvenient on portability?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is full disk encryption possible?
I will definitely try in a few weeks! I will try with the /boot partition encrypted as well. The guide seems pretty clear :) thanks again!
[Trisquel-users] Is full disk encryption possible?
Dear Trisquel Users, I'm happy to try again this distribution. However I think that a full disk encryption is a must-have. Last time I tried it I could not achieve this. I'm not talking about home folder encryption! How is this option now? Is it attainable in the GUI instalation or by any other means? Thanks in advance!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is full disk encryption possible?
You are very welcome! Learning how to encrypt my disks was a big project a few months ago, Glad to hear it will able to help someone else as well.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could systemd be an inconvenient on portability?
Interesting post from one of the top Linux kernel developers regarding Pottering and systemd. Comments are interesting as well. https://plus.google.com/+StevenRostedt/posts/WtGhnM4jVoP
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is full disk encryption possible?
Yes it is possible, but full disk encryption must be set up during installation of the OS. When I did it, I ran the netinstall in order to set it up since it provided me with the most options. I can provide more specifics if you'd like, but I found the libreboot guide to be fairly helpful: http://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/encrypted_trisquel.html One thing to do differently from this guide is that you will not encrypt /boot. The reason why is that GRUB doesn’t have a key to unlock it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Syndie? Distributed forums?
In the chart, there are also full-line arrows pointing to the same archives. At the bottom of the chart it says those represent non-anonymous connection, so I suppose the anonymizers are optional. If I had to choose, I guess I'd use Tor. I guess I'll just try getting Syndie to work as-is for now, though. I'll see if I can figure it out and make it work.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Security Enhanced Linux Kernel? Eh? What's going on here? O.o!
Hasn't Trisquel/Ubuntu been using AppArmor for a long time by default instead of SELinux?
Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
Why is the package in non-free in Debian? Maybe there's a firmware blob in the source code. https://packages.debian.org/sid/r8168-dkms
Re: [Trisquel-users] Offtopic: Assange on google
Be careful, posting things like this on here, has been known to have people label you a Conspiracy Theorist. And yes, it appears that Google does work for them Seems alot of companies do anymore.

Just a heads up, you're still probably vulnerable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMA_attack https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_boot_attack
Re: [Trisquel-users] Offtopic: Assange on google
The difference is that OP gave us evidence of Google being wrapped around their finger, while you just label a group of people with malicious intent without evidence. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] X200 and battery save
In my experience, TLP was worse than laptop-mode-tools (made it hotter, but then again it wasn't an X200) I suggest you try these and see which of them performs better: http://itsfoss.com/reduce-overheating-laptops-linux/

[Trisquel-users] X200 and battery save
Hi guys, I've just received my Thinkpad X200 from gluglug and I have few questions: What desktop enviroment do you suggest for battery save ? I'm not so enthusiast about LXDE because he missses some feature as a complete DE, is gnome fallback good because It doesn't require 3d accelaration ? And MATE / cinnamon / KDE with effects turned off ? I've searched a lot but data I've found are controversial. I'm going to choose TLP over laptop-mode-tools, do you agree ? THank you all
[Trisquel-users] Libreoffice will not open
Until yesterday, my kept-up-to-date installation of Trisquel 7 ran Libreoffice flawlessly on a ThinkPad T420 laptop with 4GB of RAM. Then I tried to open a 500MB binary (or text) file (an old Inbox from a Win98 installation of Netscape) and that came up as all pound signs (a.k.a. number signs ... or the lower right hand key of my cellphone). Now Libreoffice won't open at all, either by selecting the binary (or text) file name and then choosing Libreoffice from the popup menu, or from the main Trisquel menu (opening any version of Liberoffice) and then (which never happens) selecting the file from the Places menu. I tried sudo apt-get uninstall Liberoffice, sudo apt-get purge Libreoffice, and add/remove applications; that last one let me remove Libreoffice calc, but not Libreoffice writer. After all this, I ran sudo apt-get install Libreoffice again, alas, to no effect. Previously, Libreoffice opened several 180MB binary files OK, and I could read them and then save them (at Libreoffice's recommendation) as.odf files. Sure, it took a long time, but I was busy doing other chores, so I could just let it grind away on its own. When Libreoffice tries to open, the Libreoffice logo appears, a progress bar marches across the window, the CPU usage goes up to 26pct ... and that's where it stays ... for as long as I care to wait. To escape, I have to reboot the computer. How can I restore Libreoffice's functionality ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
mtorromeo's repo is just an unofficial mirror of realtek's source code. You would have to ask realtek, but I doubt they would listen.
Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
If realtek does anything, it would be taking the blob, putting it in a separate file to be placed in /lib/firmware, and requesting it with request_firmware.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Offtopic: Assange on google
Well, it's that google is very much entangled with the US gov. And you really should make the time to read it! ;)

Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
Yeah, I sent an email to nic...@realtek.com with this text: On your http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsview.aspx?langid=1pnid=13pfid=5level=5conn=4downtypeid=3getdown=false#2 page you provide firmware for RTL8111 for UNIX (Linux) that are licensed under the GPL. This inclusion of non human readable binary code also affects earlier versions of your code like version 8.037 used by the r8168-dkms package in Ubuntu 14.04. When looking at the source code for r8168-8.040.00.tar.bz2, the r8168_n.c file in /src/ contains binary code that is not readable and does not have appropriate documentation on the license of such code. According to these sources, the firmware is not in full compliance with the GPL and is considered non-free: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=787634 https://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel/ubuntu-purge/merge_requests/17 https://trisquel.info/en/forum/my-experiences-switching-powerline-ethernet-and-getting-around-non-free-r8169-firmware Please consider a revision to your drivers to provide source code or better documentation regarding the source of the binary code so it is in the full spirit of the GPL and doesn't get excluded from popular GNU/Linux distributions. Thank you
Re: [Trisquel-users] Syndie? Distributed forums?
Depending on your needs a realtime collaborative editor might be useful, e.g. gobby. It's available in the repos. (Actually 2 version are!) screenshot homepage
Re: [Trisquel-users] X200 and battery save
I have an Libreboot X60s from gluglug and run Xfce as my DE. More lightweight than Gnome on these older machines but suffciently configurable if not more than Gnome/KDE etc. to satisfy most needs.

Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
Several sections after line 5853 do not qualify for source code as per the GPL requirements. I marked the package for removal.
Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
Are you sure? It's in the universe repo of Ubuntu and not restricted or multiverse. If you go to http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsview.aspx?langid=1pnid=13pfid=5level=5conn=4downtypeid=3getdown=false#2 for r8168-8.040.00.tar.bz2 and take a look at the source code you will see: # # r8168 is the Linux device driver released for Realtek Gigabit Ethernet # controllers with PCI-Express interface. # # Copyright(c) 2014 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
Download http://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/pool/main/r/r8168/r8168_8.037.00.orig.tar.bz2, extract, and go into the /src/ folder. Open up any of the files and you will see the source and the GPL license header.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Libreoffice will not open
I would try to remove the .libreoffice directory (a hidden directory) in your home folder.
Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
Oh and I downlaoded http://us.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/pool/main/r/r8168/r8168-dkms_8.037.00-1_all.deb and http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/r/r8168/r8168-dkms_8.039.00-1_all.deb and then extracted them and peeked around the files. Where are these binary blobs? All I see are source files that are used and created on the fly for DKMS. Wouldn't it be better to ACTUALLY look at the files that you are condemning instead of just taking someone else's word for it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
The first one is at line 7432. Scroll down and you'll see functions spanning thousands of lines, one for each chipset.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Security Enhanced Linux Kernel? Eh? What's going on here? O.o!
I find it really annoying that conspiracy nowadays is primarily associated with this kind of debates, where everything is speculated and no one is bothered to do any real research and provide any concrete evidence to support or refute claims. (...) You shouldn't use conspiracy or conspiracy theory when you just want to say that someone isn't providing any evidence. How do you even refute an argument that is not supported by any fact? The only possible answer is: provide evidences.
Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
Look at this file: https://github.com/mtorromeo/r8168/blob/master/src/r8168_n.c. It's hidden in the source.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreoffice will not open
Magic Banana would: ... try to remove the .libreoffice directory (a hidden directory) in your home folder. Alas, there's no .libreoffice directory there. My Google search suggested the same approach, which sounds perfectly logical.
Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
Can you please clarify the line number(s) of the suspected invalid binary code contained within the text file?
Re: [Trisquel-users] My experiences in switching to powerline ethernet and getting around non-free r8169 firmware
I sent a message on GitHub (https://github.com/mtorromeo/r8168/issues/3) asking for him/her to provide source for the binary code or remove entirely. Well this sucks... I thought I had a free alternative to the r8169 firmware. :-(
Re: [Trisquel-users] Syndie? Distributed forums?
Gobby looks nice, but I need something that doesn't require everyone to be onliene at the same time. I thought about trying out mailing lists, but I found an extension for MediaWiki that might actually work for me, so I'll see if we can use that.
