It's a standalone communal printer/photocopier/scanner at my place of work
(I'd ask tech support for help, but they only support Microsoft's OS). I'm
not entirely sure of they exact model- if necessary, I can ask tomorrow when
tech support are here- but the device has "Canon", "4025", and "ImageRUNNER
Advance" stuck on the front of it if that helps. Sorry I can't give you more
details- I'm really not experienced with these sorts of things. I'll do my
best to provide any information requested though.

What printer are we talking about? For many printers, you only need to
connect it by USB and it works.

[Trisquel-users] Re : vnc via ssh over internet

2016-10-03 Thread lcerf
The NAT router must only be configured on the server side. It would be good
to have three manuals. A first manual that would focus on configuring a NAT
server so that a server behind it can be contacted. The fundamental problem
is: there are as many configuration interfaces as there are NAT routers.
Then, a second manual on SSH. It would reference the first manual in cases it
is necessary, i.e., when the server is behind a NAT. And, finally, a manual
on VNC to get a remote desktop within the local network (easy, no need for
SSH nor for traversing a router) and, in another section, through Internet
(reference to the previous manual to first get an SSH connection). But,
again, graphical interfaces through the Internet are very slow. To the point
of being unusable.

In the Spanish forum, which I invaded a long time ago with my
pseudospanishblabla, we have a "frequently asked questions" page which we
link when a newcomer asks for something obvious. Maybe we could just make one
like that in Eng so as not to repeat always the same on those few same
topics, like for instance, "is Debian libre, Is Firefox Libre, How to view
flash content etc etc"

make/initiate one myself.

Please edit or give comments - directly in the wiki or to me. It's my goal to
formulate the how to in an easily understood language, aiming at people with
less technical insight (as my self).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Forum request: signatures

2016-10-03 Thread mcz
The forum software works, but my main concern (apart threads being locked
after some time) is the access to knowledge.
It's all wiki-focused, which is both good and bad. I never ever think of
looking for something in there. I just use the search feature. So I thought a
few links in the signature, even linking to the wiki, would make a more
visible help for some frequently asked subjects.
But to get there, I need to spend (waste?) time learning about mailing lists,
which I don't care about. It's the first time in my life I've seen such a
basic feature missing. It's only one small feature, but those little things
add up over time.

So it works, but it's more like "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" kind of
thing. Well, Trisquel is a bit like that as well (Abrowser has a weird
diagonal since the update, and vimfx doesn't work anymore, and so on),
because it takes a lot of time, which Ruben doesn't have.
I understand, but it's frustrating, specially as the flagship for
free-software. Hence me calling the forum software archaic, and trisquel
being ok, but often late on security, and sometimes lacking the polish needed
to not get in the user's way.
But to be fair, it's an overall frustration with some GNU/Linux programs that
are unreliable (I'm speaking of my love/hate relationship with Jitsi), but
thankfully, most programs are both awesome, and nearly rock solid.

But again, I know it's hard work and that it demands a lot of time.

Anyway, all this is in reaction of someone downvoting my pretty neutral first
thread (and changed his/her mind on the way, which means ther is hope).
But no worries with the downvote thing, I'm just saying that it's a lazy and
unclear way to communicate. And it's exactly what you're saying, it's
supposed to signal spam etc.

Hell, even I overuse it to upvote feature sometimes.

Then ok, it's not fully libre culture by definition.
Yet I still think it's libre enough.
I'm all for focusing on freedom, unless it ends up hurting me. I mean the
right to re-sell artwork serves no logical nor meaningful purpose.

One must remember that XKCD is at least shareable, not free/libre.

I'm not a free/libre culture activist, but this is one of the
distinctions from free/libre software movement, and free/libre culture
movement.

Ok, maybe then it's better to change google authenticator with OTP in

"Is google authenticator free software?"

"It seems that the free version doesn't get updates and the application at

Well it sounds like you've answered your own question: Whether or not it is
free software depends on which one you're using.

If you want one-time passwords there are other programs in F-Droid too.
Search for "OTP".

I believe adding manually the gpg signing key and relaunching the script is
what you want to do. Find and add their key, add it, compile, profit :)

It can't find the public key that the package was signed. Also maybe
it's better in this situation to stop the script or it doesn't matter?

[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 consistently fails to add network printer?

2016-10-03 Thread infinityfallen

I'm not sure this is the right place to post help requests, but...

Today I tried to add a network printer. I started by opening the system
settings, selecting "printers", and pressing the + button. Clicking the
printer on the list brought up a message saying "Failed: could not add
network printer". A quick help search suggested the "system-config-printer"
command and using CUPS' web interface, but the former doesn't exist and the
latter demands I know the printer address and protocol (which I couldn't find
on the printer, and isn't available from the list the original attempt brings
up). I'm presuming this isn't a needs-proprietary-software issue, as Fedora
could add the printer find using the generic driver.

Thanks in advance!
