Re: [Trisquel-users] Howto reactivate laptop's NIC (it worked fine and still works under Parabola)
The wireless card won't work at all. Intel WiFi stuff needs proprietary junk. Linux-libre has that stuff deleted. A bug in Linux-libre prevents the firmware from ever being loaded, even if it's there. As to the built-in ethernet if it works in Parabola but not Trisquel perhaps the kernel in Trisquel is too old? Parabola makes a policy of living on the bleeding edge. So try a newer kernel in Trisquel and see if that solves it? Information and instructions at https://jxself.org/linux-libre/
[Trisquel-users] Howto reactivate laptop's NIC (it worked fine and still works under Parabola)
Hi, I've spent a couple of days fighting with this, so, I hope someone could lend me a hand... Abstract: Tried to use the laptop's wireless card installing its firmware from a Debian's package; it doesn't work at all; purged that package and removed the modules, but after reboot the NIC stoped working (but it works if I boot a LiveUSB of Parabola, just that not as 'eth0' but as 'enp6s0'). Seconded. Also, could we please have a password manager? I use keepass2, although which one isn't really important. Password managers are so important as a utility, yet so underused, and it seems like the responsibility of OS's servicing the general public to at least ensure they have easy access to suitable tools for security.
Re: [Trisquel-users] could I install trisquel on a thinkpad with intel i5 processor?
Firstly, as noted above, be aware that encrypted data is only safe whilst not in use. It's not something to be paranoid about if you don't have state secrets- you're already 100 times safer than most people- but it is still a good idea to not leave your laptop unattended and to aim to get a free software processor. As mentioned, the X200 with Libreboot would be a good idea, and (in the future) an EOMA68-compatible laptop housing/tablet case with something like the Libre Tea computer card could do an equally good (if not better) job. Secondly, and more interestingly, about Trisquel support for the Thinkpad i5. The thing is that Trisquel doesn't support any particular computer, but rather individual components. Your i5 processor will work, although (as mentioned above) it uses proprietary firmware, which (and I got caught out too) is more and less dangerous than proprietary operating systems. Most other components should work fine, but the biggest problem is with Wi-Fi cards. Unless you got really lucky, Wi-Fi probably won't work. That gives you 3 choices: 1. Live without it. Probably not practical, but you might be able/willing to just use ethernet or stay off the internet. Please don't leave us though . 2. Get freedom-compatible Wi-Fi. Both Tehnoetic and ThinkPenguin (URLs are tehnoetic.com and thinkpenguin.com) sell both Wi-Fi cards you can put inside your computer and USB Wi-Fi adapters, which are as simple as flash drives to use. They aren't too expensive regardless of type or store, so I'd look into them. 3. Compromise on freedom. Debian GNU/Linux without the non-free and contrib repos will tell you what drivers you need, which you then just download and install like other packages. Alternatively, you could always replace Trisquel's kernel with a vanilla one, using another PC to download and copy over necessary files/packages to build it. I don't recommend either of these, for millions of reasons, but I understand that it may be only option available (and have been forced to do it before ).
Re: [Trisquel-users] First development alpha iso images of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas"
Where is the official package list for Trisquel Flidas? I only found a unofficial copy here: https://paste.ubuntu.ir/ieim
Re: [Trisquel-users] First development alpha iso images of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas"
I think the most important package to add is icedove because some icecat add-ons are designed to be run on icedove too.

Re: [Trisquel-users] the Ogg format disapeared from mps-youtube
Actually, WebM is a subset of Matroska. There are actual technical differences in them. The WebM container does not support all of the same features that Matroska does; only those necessary for video (and audio) to play over the web.
Re: [Trisquel-users] the Ogg format disapeared from mps-youtube
From a technical standpoint, WebM is just Matroska. The only difference is that while it is valid for a Matroska file to contain several different kinds of video and audio, WebM is only allowed to have VP8 or VP9 for video, and Vorbis or Opus for audio.
[Trisquel-users] Re : the Ogg format disapeared from mps-youtube
Ogg and WebM are containers and I do not know if one is technically better than the other (but WebM being newer, I would guess it is better). Now you may have wanted to talk about Theora, the video codec, or Vorbis, the audio codec (both from the foundation that made Ogg and usually distributed in this container). Technically, VP8 and OPUS have respectively superseded them and are as patent-unencumbered as Theora and Vorbis.
Re: [Trisquel-users] could I install trisquel on a thinkpad with intel i5 processor?
>Encryption won't do much against spyware which is running ON your system. Exactly. Encrypting data is only useful while that data is at rest, that is to say, while the laptop is turned off.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Running script at startup not working
Yes, the shell configuration only is interpreted when the shell starts, i.e., when a terminal is opened (if it is your default file). I do not know what you script is for. It could have been useful in text sessions...
Re: [Trisquel-users] the Ogg format disapeared from mps-youtube
Afaik all vids there **are** in webm and mp4, I have set mpsyt to stream webm and I use youtube-dl to download webm.
Re: [Trisquel-users] could I install trisquel on a thinkpad with intel i5 processor?
Encryption won't do much against spyware which is running ON your system. As you yourself can do nothing useful with encrypted data, until you decrypt them, data on your system can stay usefully encrypted only while at rest. And if a piece of code running on your system is able (yes, it can be) to intercept your typing while you input your decryption passphrase, then all of your encryption based "security" is gone. Not to mention, that if the same piece of code running on your system is able to control your RAM (again, it can be), then it doesn't even need to steal your passphrase, because RAM is where many of your unencrypted data are stored while in use by the system. Not to mention another possible case in which a malicious software has access to what gets spit out to your screen.. you can easily imagine what good encryption can do in such a scenario.. I'm not writing this to scare you, but to warn you. Don't assume your data are secured, just because they are encrypted. The whole system using those data needs to be secure. And there's no security in an obscure or obfuscated system. And that's what proprietary software brings to your system: obscurity and obfuscation of the operations manipulating YOUR data.

This morning I downloaded some .ogg audio files using mps-youtube. This afternoon everything (as far as I know) is m4a or webm in mps-youtube. VLC doesn't recognize webm as a audio file. I have set the default audio format to download to m4a, which VLC can play. ¿What happened to OGG?
Re: [Trisquel-users] could I install trisquel on a thinkpad with intel i5 processor?
If I do not sell the laptop again I'll install debian. That's the least I can do... for me. But I have a second line of defense, just in case: I always encrypt my sensible information, if the OS is free (as in freedom) or not, so I am secure in some way. Do you know if there are plans in the future so that Trisquel could be used in this laptop ( lenovo thinkpad i5 )? Many thanks
Re: [Trisquel-users] Running script at startup not working
Yes.. I have got this to work in Startup Applications, under Trisquels default session, but I mainly use i3. The script does not run in any other desktop environment using that method. For .bashrc, I'm pretty sure the script would only run when a terminal has been opened. Though, it has been a while since I have tested that. I'm going to give it a try actually. Thanks for that reminder.

That would be good idea, you mean that we create one thread per category and at last, I sum up all of them in the wiki. right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] For those of you who want a libre version of pokemon,
You need to remove all the trademarks and copyrighted things of Nintendo (like characters) to be 100% free. Do not forget about DMCA about this game.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Please contritube to Trisquel 8!
I suppose we do not have enough contributors. If we keep everything in one place it would be easier to handle them and then if we got a long list, then we can create a different wiki page for each of them. Feel free to edit the Wiki page as you wish.
Re: [Trisquel-users] For those of you who want a libre version of pokemon,
Is it okay if I bump this? IT is absolutely a good idea to fork this for gnu/linux.
Re: [Trisquel-users] could I install trisquel on a thinkpad with intel i5 processor?
I would not use ubuntu if possible and use debian instead... it has a better policy then ubuntu for what is truly free software. They also have a version of debian with nonfree repository enabled by default... but at least you would be more aware of what is truly free and what is not... Ubuntu thinks free means no price, which is not correct. Yes It is gnu/linux, but people did the same thing to me so don't feel bad... Quite honestly, if you want to run nonfree software, firetools is absolutely a good idea to have. Not that I recommend you use nonfree software ever if you can help it... ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] could I install trisquel on a thinkpad with intel i5 processor?
Oh the irony... Although, If mark shuttleworth was smart in the long term, he would do a debian approach at least and do what they do with the kernel, at the very least to block some bad stuff by default in the kernel while of course, giving the user the choice completely and totally but warning them of the dangers. Alas, ubuntu is only good for one thing... being forked... ;)
[Trisquel-users] Re : could I install trisquel on a thinkpad with intel i5 processor?
Any user deserves control on her computing. Free software (including firmware) gives four fundamental that, we believe, are necessary conditions to control one's own computing. If you are actually wondering of malware that can be implemented in a Wifi firmware, the answer is "any malware": any PCI device has access to all other peripherals (the RAM, the disk, etc.). Even Ubuntu's funder write: If you read the catalogue of spy tools and digital weaponry provided to us by Edward Snowden, you’ll see that firmware on your device is the NSA’s best friend. Your biggest mistake might be to assume that the NSA is the only institution abusing this position of trust – in fact, it’s reasonable to assume that all firmware is a cesspool of insecurity courtesy of incompetence of the worst degree from manufacturers, and competence of the highest degree from a very wide range of such agencies. http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/1332

[Trisquel-users] Resolution stuck at 1400 x 1050 after updates
Hello I have a problem. Every time I reinstall the OS and do the updates, the resolution is stuck at 1400 x 1050. I tried to set it to something else using some xrandr commands, but it didn't work. Also the package xf86 is no longer present when I go to synaptic package manager. I don't know if that has to do with anything, but I should probably update the graphic driver or kernel. I tried updating the kernel using jxself's guide, when I try to install the appropriate kernel package it's stuck at 0% downloading it. Can somebody please help me?

[Trisquel-users] Re : Running script at startup not working
Isn't it a script you want to run once whenever you log in? For the graphical session, you can "Add" it to the "Startup Applications". For shells, you can add it to their configuration files (e.g., ~/.bashrc if you use GNU Bash, Trisquel's default).
