Re: [Trisquel-users] Other GNU/Linux-libre distro?
Of course Ubuntu is NOT looked to be good, this is why I stand Mint here for LMDE (and NOT Ubuntu Mint). For Debian, Mint, Devuan, nonfree is obviously evil which I NEVER probe nonfree but what are problems from contrib?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Other GNU/Linux-libre distro?
Parabola is a great alternative. I'm using it on one of my machines and love it. Assuming that the only difference between Devuan and Debian is not using systemd, then that is also a good option as long as you don't use the non-free and contrib repositories. However, Ubuntu and Mint are not good alternatives as they do not respect your freedom. If you are happy with Parabola, I suggest you continue using that.
[Trisquel-users] Other GNU/Linux-libre distro?
I was a Trisquel user but now using pacman-based Parabola GNU/Linux-libre, and appending Linux-libre into Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Devuan (all 3 Deb-based like Trisquel), and are they good alternatives with Trisquel, which you think?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
He's been here even longer than I have; there are similar threads for Trisquel 7 and Trisquel 6, at least.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Disconnection from network after waking computer from sleep
This computer uses Libreboot as installed by Libiquity, which apparently comes with its own bootloader . There seems to be an option to use the operating systems boot loader, but it errors something about not having unicode font file or whatever. It seems to have something in /boot/grub/fonts/unicode.pf2 There is no /etc/grub.d/01_PASSWORD on my computer. Thanks for the help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] GPD Pocket
Thanks for the links. Gearbest seems to only be selling the device with Windows 10, not Ubuntu. Do you know if the bootloader supports booting into and installing another OS from a USB drive?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
Yep the ME deactivation comes from the project of Nicola Corna https://github.com/corna/me_cleaner I used it as well in the latest version to deactivate the ME and remove almost all the partitions in the ME region in my laptop. Regarding the Purism, I actually found citation in their blog of the sources. For example here https://puri.sm/posts/reverse-engineering-the-intel-management-engine-romp-module/ They cite the russian developer and as well the me_cleaner project. I also noticed in the last pull I did from the coreboot git repo a huge amount of push from them in the coreboot project.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
I am using the 8 downloaded from the jenkis repo since a while. I didn't have any problem so far. I daily receive new updates. I am running it in a pretty modern hardware, a quad core i7 Haswell laptop and it is very fast and stable. Everything works even the sleep and so on. I truly don't understand why people complain constantly. @t3g just download it and install it :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
The issue with Purism is several fold. The first issue is that Purism conflates the terms Open Source with Free Software when they are clearly different. The second issue is that Purism upsells its products as if they are going to be free as in free software on day one or shortly there after when it is clear that this is simply not possible based on their hardware choices. The third issue is that the main person behind Purism has conducted himself in a pretty ugly manner here on this forum, which rightfully rubbed many people the wrong way. Purism continues to hitch its wagon to Trisquel when no relationship exists, nor is any Trisquel software used in their systems. When you buy Purism products you are not getting a free as in freedom product and it is unlikely it will ever be free. Purism seems to make a pretty nice, albeit very over priced open source product. They are comparable to System76 or ZaReason with Coreboot added for some models. PureOS is Debian testing (optionally free software), Coreboot (not free software, but open source), and I would expect other products by them to be in the same ilk. The "work" Purism claims to have done releated to Intel ME and Coreboot is just that, a claim of other project's work without giving credit. Purism is a confidence man operation, but if you look into it at all it becomes clear most of their claims are either exaggerated or false. A Distro is a tool and there are many options for which distro one can choose. The notion that Trisquel has to have the latest and greatest or totally not exist is very flawed. For people like myself who want an LTS system and will ride that system out until its support life ends Trisquel is a great free as in freedom option. That of course is the whole point of an LTS system in the first place. If you want latest and greatest you want a rolling release distro like Parabola.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
I think tg3 has a valid point with this, as well as all of his other posts on this topic. If we're lucky, Trisquel 8 will be released at the same time as Ubuntu 18.04, which makes its packages outdated by two years. I know that Trisquel 7 still gets security updates, etc., but I have not found it to be reliable (it constantly freezes, and only a hard reset will allow me to continue; also, some of the applications also crash/freeze, like deja-dup, which is unacceptable for a backup solution, and there is no way to get a newer version of it on Trisquel 7). I also understand that Ruben is working a full-time job, and that he can't put as much time into Trisquel 8 as we would like, so I'm not blaming him; I think that an honest approach for him would be to either reallocate his resources to help out another libre OS, and retire Trisquel for good, or else find a way to get enough developers to help him put out releases in a reasonable amount of time. I would personally love to help with Trisquel 8, but I'm not a developer, so I don't believe any contributions that I could make would help it to be released substantially sooner. I know that people on this forum seem to hate Purism (for reasons that are, to me, unclear; in reading both the forums here, as well as everything that Purism has put out that I can find, there was no outright deception on their part, but a few instances where they misjudged what they could do, and made promises that they later couldn't fulfill), but they have been making a lot of progress on the free software front, even having their own libre distribution that not only up-to-date, it is also a rolling release, so there is much less concern that it would go the way of Trisquel 8.

Not quite, but thanks for looking into it!
Re: [Trisquel-users] How do I change the boot order so that my libreboot boots first from the USB drive?
If you start a thread about your booting issue (what does the red "failed" message appear next to), I'm sure someone here can help you with it. If you are frustrated the menu bar and other interface features, then your problem is not with Trisquel but with the desktop environment, GNOME. (Ubuntu now uses GNOME as its default too, by the way.) You can use a different desktop environment by installing it, clicking on the little Trisquel logo near your name at the login screen, and selecting it. If you want to use Ubuntu's previous default, for example, run $ sudo apt-get install unityand select Unity when you log in. It will probably be easier to change the details in Trisquel that you are unhappy with than switching to a new distro. However, if you do want to stop using Trisquel, Debian or Parabola would both be viable options. I'm using Parabola on my second laptop and love it, but it is not very beginner friendly. It does not have a graphical installer, and by default it has no desktop environment, so you'll have to already know which desktop environment you want and install it from the command line. Debian would be much easier to get started with, as it has a graphical installer. Just make sure that after installing you edit \etc\apt\sources.list$ sudo nano \etc\apt\sources.list and delete the words "non-free" and "contrib" wherever they appear. This will remove the non-free repositories from the package manager, so you won't have to worry about accidentally installing non-free software.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Who of this community honestly runs Trisquel GNU/Linux?
No need to use MacOS to do Skype or Amazon. Another GNU/Linux distro will do fine - not as free as a truly free OS, but freer than OSX. If you like the Mac look and feel, try Ubuntu MATE or PCLinuxOS MATE and use the built in MATE Tweak tool to switch to the Cupertino look. Of course the upcoming Trisquel 8 will also use the MATE desktop, but it won't support Skype or DRM'd content like Amazon.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Who of this community honestly runs Trisquel GNU/Linux?
ThinkPenguin doesn't offer old machines. They offer current hardware. The price you pay for that is you use the stock BIOS instead of LibreBoot, but if you're willing to do that, you can take advantage of modern CPUs and video cards.

Re: [Trisquel-users] How do I change the boot order so that my libreboot boots first from the USB drive?
Which do you recommend? The most crippling problem I had with my Triskell setup was that, gradually over time, Abrowser began to become slower and slower, and crash frequently. Other things I've noticed are that the boot time has increased, and there is a little red "failed" thing that started showing up occasionally and now always shows up. Bugs aside, I also found that, however free Triskell is in theory, in practice, I was stuck with a crappy stock menu bar and other things as well that I had no idea how to change.

Re: [Trisquel-users] apps
Rescently, I found out that the best strategy we have so far is actually to recommend descentralized/federated communications/networks such as XMPP/Jabber to the general public, and develop distributed ones "in the background" for use when they are mature, friendly, easy and "power-saving" enough. ;) This goes in line with what Moglen suggested ([1]). Prior to 2000 we *could* use the excuse that our recommendations weren't "good enough" and still have patient people using it. Now, the good enough excuse doesn't really serve us very well if the thing doesn't even work in a minimum level. I bet it's a Logitech. They have lousy micro switches that get worn out in a few years time. I had the exact same issue -- couldn't click on anything without opening all kinds of menus and dialogs.

Hi, Is that an official download link? What is jenkins and what is the reason it's not just on the download page. Sorry, I'm not so familiar with Trisquel. But I'm looking to use this as my main distro.

[Trisquel-users] Mouse double-clicks on screen even though I'm only single-clicking
Hi all, I've been suffering with this problem for months now. I've long thought it was just a software bug that would get fixed with an update. But it hasn't. Now I'm not sure if it's a software bug or I just need to get a new mouse. I've checked my settings to make sure everything is normal. I'm not sure what's causing it, but it's a real pain to have it double click when you only want it to single click. Just imagine all of the troubles an unwanted double-click brings! Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
