Re: [Trisquel-users] Virtualbox on Libreboot w/Trisquel?
So my info was wrong :( Their licences are unclear.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Virtualbox on Libreboot w/Trisquel?
Starting with version 4.2 compiling the BIOS used by VirtualBox requires the Open Watcom compiler, which is non-free: https://www.mail-archive.com/debian-legal@lists.debian.org/msg34687.html "VirtualBox OSE Guest Additions" are non-free too: http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/multiverse/v/virtualbox-guest-additions-iso/virtualbox-guest-additions-iso_5.0.10-1/copyright
[Trisquel-users] Re : Anti-virus software?
HTTPS Everywhere, Privacy Badger and VPNs have little to do with "security". They deal with "privacy", and, yes, I recommend them too. Unfortunately, ad blockers are about privacy too (and not only about not seeing ads) because ads in Web pages now commonly spy on us. I personally use uBlock Origin.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Anti-virus software?
Do you run any server? If not, incoming connections will not reach anything and you do not need to configure the firewall in Linux (iptables: you already have it!), unless you want to filter outgoing connections (but why?).
[Trisquel-users] Re : Linux Mint liberated!
There are many other free licenses besides the GPL (which suits software but not textures): https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html Using Trisquel or any other 100% free GNU/Linux distribution, you indeed do not need to worry about licenses (the developers of the distribution take care of that for us: thanks to them!) ... as long as you stick to what the default repository provides.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Linux Mint liberated!
A license is only a text. It tells whoever received the work what she is permitted/forbidden to do with it. Without a license, the Berne convention applies. That terrible international agreement says that, by default, you are not allowed to do anything with the work you received, except using it... but that is not even clear in the case of software because that implies copying it to RAM and the Berne convention does not permit copies.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Virtualbox on Libreboot w/Trisquel?
Ubuntu 14.04 packages will work for trisquel 7... not sure otherwise... Although, be warned... virtualbox 4.2 and above use non-free software. just warning you, they are contrib... meaning they are libre initially till they grab the non-free dependencies... pity no one is trying to fork virtualbox and make it libre...
Re: [Trisquel-users] How should I proceed if I want to put parabola on my x200 fde devuan laptop?
yes, it was devuan, not two in one drive either. No big issue at this moment, but have you installed parabola with openrc on libreboot x200 with full disk encryption?

https://www.krackattacks.com/ or this will be an issue for you... the above link shows some really nasty attacks that can even penetrate through openwrt routers supposedly... https://gogs.librecmc.org/libreCMC/libreCMC/releases according to this, you should upgrade soon... for important reasons... https://librecmc.org/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anti-virus software?
You don't need one. I have to agree with senor Banana about rkhunter, only false positives, if any, but an anti-rootkit does make more sense to have installed.. Just make sure your software is updated and stick to ur repo and you'll be fine :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Linux Mint liberated!
I think that your confusion is with copyright and copyleft work and how licenses apply to software. You seem to be under the impression that the license applies to only binaries, but it applies to the source code. Having access to the source code does not allow you to use, modify, or distribute it under a different license. If that were that case the GPL would be useless, because someone could redistribute GPL-licensed software under a proprietary license. If you use, modify, or distribute proprietary software as if it were GPL-licensed, you will be breaking the law. This might clarify some things: https://www.gnu.org/copyleft/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anti-virus software?
Thank you! I plan on using PIA since I've had a very good experience with them. Will there be any issues setting this up? I apologize for these newbie questions, Im very new to all this! lol
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
gd_scania, have you been able to talk to Ruben or at least connect with the development team for Flidas yet? There is a lot of work to be done and you are obviously young, intelligent, and eager to help. https://devel.trisquel.info/groups/trisquel I look forward to enjoying the benefits of your hard work and enthusiasm and, hopefully, bringing my millenial adult children and octogenarian parents into a better place than Microsoft and Apple in the future.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anti-virus software?
David888 I just wanted to welcome you to Gnu/Linux and commend you for your concern about security.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Linux Mint liberated!
The down and dirty explanation for my nine year old, as far as reverse engineering Minetest texture packs and other little kid stuff, is that if you don't see the GPL, it's proprietary so hands off. Of course I have a deeper understanding when I've had my coffee. ;) There are other licenses, of course, but one of the advantages of Trisquel over Mint for "average joes" like myself and my family is that we don't have to worry about licensing. And let's face it, when we are under stress or losing our tempers about trolls is when we are most likely to make mistakes. It's not a joke when I say that switching from as-free-as-I-could-make-it-at-the-time Ubuntu to Trisquel when I did probably saved me from violating copyright laws in my country, getting caught, and getting my half-educated self in a lot of trouble. Having licensing issues taken care of by trustworthy individuals gives us the space to learn, grow, and in some cases become hackers themselves and give back to the community. It's great to see so many new-to-Gnu people posting lately as well as new-to-Trisquel people.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Virtualbox on Libreboot w/Trisquel?
Sorry, I'm a little confused by what you wrote. Which version would I choose to download from their site?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anti-virus software?
A firewall is always a good plan. The most straightforward one is Gufw, it is in the repos. I also recommend AppArmor, https everywhere (browser extension), and a VPN at minimum. I personally run Privacy Badger, and an adblocker with my browser additionally. There is a good, though slightly old chat about online security here for your perusal: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/firewall-trisquel
[Trisquel-users] Trouble with mounting SDCard - solved!
I just got given a 128GB (micro?) SDCard. When I tried to open it in Trisquel 7 (fully updated) on my Aspire1, it showed up in the sidebar of the file manager, but threw a long error message when I clicked on it. I tested it in LMDE, and it mounted fine, and I was able to create a folder and save a file successfully. Tried again in Trisquel, no dice. After putting the error message through a quick web search (been trialling the Searx instance at search.disroot.org), I found advice that the problem is lack of exFAT support in Ubuntu 14.04 (on which Trisquel 7 is based), and instructions to install two packages, which I did: sudo apt-get install exfat-utils exfat-fuse After a reboot, the SDCard now works fine. I am going to try Trisquel 8 alpha on the Aspire1 soon, so will be interested to see if it works out of the box, or if I still need to apply such a fix.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
This is a perfectly legitimate position. We are all hoping to have a complete free System. Will it ever happen? This is not a technical issue so maybe no it will not. This is why we are all here :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Virtualbox on Libreboot w/Trisquel?
Virtualbox and his dkms packages are GPL (free software), and runs fine everything, but you can not use USB-2.0 or USB-3.0, support USBs superior to 1.1 you need to use proprietary extension packages. https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch01.html#intro-installing
[Trisquel-users] Virtualbox on Libreboot w/Trisquel?
Hello, sorry for so many questions. But will installing Virtualbox on Libreboot w/Trisquel be possible? Will there be any issues? Thank you!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anti-virus software?
Thanks guys! What about a firewall? Would I need that? Sorry, I'm new to this setup.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
I am unsure is there an ME in my hardware system, this system is modelled NP-350U2A-A03 and i dnt see the word Management Engine from my BIOS.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anti-virus software?
david888, you honestly dnt need to worry which you are attacked against malware in a libre system like Parabola and us. You are here protected with full freedom which our RMS has guided us.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
It is a good thing ME can be deactivated on more recent hardware and that knowledge is out there. At the same time this is a free software forum. I am not going to promote non-free software here like Coreboot. Most people found out about Coreboot without me or this forum, the same will happen with ME. I am thankful to the Coreboot community because they make fully free options possible, though I don't feel comfortable using them on my primary system yet. I use Trisquel, with a free wifi, on a system supported by Libreboot. Freeing the BIOS is something I have my eye on. Libreboot is a more complete solution than just going after the ME because it addresses that and more. I am not going to encourage people to get systems that only support ME deactivation when a more complete solution exists. Of course a fully free system is not possible, everyone understands that. Everyone makes compromises, this is not new information.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Linux Mint liberated!
I of course know how a free and copyleft license works, our GPL is notable one, you are licensed which you must fully protect freedom and must restrict nothing, must stand firm against every back-doors and every surveillances. But I honestly dunno how free but permissive licenses (like BSD clauses) and nonfree licenses (like m$) work.
