Is that the proprietary Impact typeface?

Trisquel 7 now has Abrowser 58, based on the same version of Firefox,
released two days ago.

When I tested for the first time in late December FF52 and 57 behaved the
same.

I have been thinking about the same about Tor but I think this may not work
correctly because in Tor things seem more complicated. Perhaps there are
additional (Tor specific) about:config variables which don't have a match in
FF. I am currently testing some things with Tor and Panopticlick and I
actually find that specific (supposedly more private settings) give worse
Panopticlick score (i.e. result in easier fingerprinting). Example: With
default settings the Panopticlick gives 6.58 bits of entropy for Tor. If
enable DNT - the result raises to 7.91 bits, i.e. the fingerprint becomes
more unique (less privacy). Strangely I always get:

Is your browser accepting Do Not Track commitments? - No.

Also in Tor OCSP queries are enabled by default. Disabling that (with all
other settings default) doesn't change the bits. I am still not sure how good
or bad disabling OCSP may be. If the IP address is anonymized the challenges
are different, so Tor should be tested in a different way as a whole as one
expects much more from it.

Many proprietary packages can be simply removed. Others may be need to be
modified or replaced. For example, any proprietary firmware removed should be
replaced with with free firmware when available so that as many devices as
possible are supported. Another example is SMPLayer, which in Ubuntu (I think)
includes the non-free SMTube for YouTube compatibility, while the rest of
SMPLayer is free software. Rather than throw the whole thing out, it is better
to rebuild it without the proprietary feature. Then there's Firefox, which is
technically free software but has some problems that Abrowser attempts to
address. Things like these are why removing proprietary software is not as
simple as removing them from the repo. However, it seems to me that this is
mostly complete and that the main issue blocking the official release is
ensuring that the upgrade process from T7 to T8 is smooth no matter how T7 is
configured. I'm no expert, but I wonder if replacing GNOME Fallback with MATE
as the default DE makes this a particular challenge.

What version of Trisquel are you using? When I used T7 I found Icecat to be
slow compared to Abrowser, possibilty due to its extra plugins like LibreJS.
The version of Abrowser in Trisquel 8 is based on FF57, so it's much faster now.

I basically agreed with this when you wrote it. Since then the situation has
progressed and I'm reevaluating a few points. You may turn out to have been
right on all points anyway, but I'm going to see how things play out before I
make a conclusion.

Your other post about Tor Browser is interesting. I have thought about changing
all or FF52 or Icecat's about:config to match that of Tor Browser and seeing
what happens. If Tor Browser relies on anonymity to solve certain Firefox
problems then this will be an incomplete solution, but the Tor developers have
probably investigated Firefox more thoroughly than anyone.

I don't no, but clarified my doubt.
IceCat 52.3 is more current than abrowser 56 ^^ (besides being faster)

Thanks mason that explains some issues but is there a more technical
explanation as to why it isn't so simple as to just remove proprietary bits.

I noticed that IceCat is pretty faster than Abrowser on my computer. Why is
that?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Web Browser

2018-01-26 Thread www
I don't read the whole topic but this post was enough to remind me why I use
abrowser until today.

However, for some weeks some pages are progressively stopping the 56.0
version used in the abrowser.

Youtube was the first to show notification, followed by Facebook (both allow
STILL use).

Soundcloud and Mixcloud no longer allow access, but now, the design of github
begins to present problems (and show "Please note that GitHub no longer
supports old versions of Firefox.")

Sorry for the bad English, but would anyone know when the next abrowser
update will be?

I use Midori as an alternative but depending on the restrictions of the site,
it does not go in.

I imagine all this restriction has to do with DRM but I really was not
bothering me until I had issues with github.

Regards.

Considering everything discussed so far - I wonder how you can be pretty sure
(or even just sure) about any thingy without testing :)

The incredibly idiotic feature is disabled though.
