Systemd starts services in parallel. To graphically see not only the
initialization times but also when every service starts:

$ systemd-analyze plot > systemd.svg
"systemd.svg" can then be opened with Eye of MATE (or any other viewer that
understands SVG).

See https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/manual/html_node/Features.html#Features
for the technical features of the package manager itself (no need for
administration permissions, possible coexistence of different versions of a
same package, possible rollback, etc.).

The more proprietary software packages (what often translates to the more
packages) a repository contains, the more you are at risk of installing
proprietary software. And the more work to check that you are not.

Thanks. I didn't know anything about that, I knew systemD was the default (I
remember the heated discussions back then...) but I didn't know much about
it. Those commands will allow me to make some analysis and hopefully some
improvements (or at least make sure that over time stuff is not added up). I
remember in another installation I also had services starting up (like Tor
and I2P) which I didn't use all that much and wanted to just start them
manually but they were taking time at boot.

I will report back if I find anything interesting :)

Thanks!

I believe systemd is installed by default.

Here are a couple of commands with example responses from my laptop running
Trisquel 8:

rally@silverbird:~/Desktop$ systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 7.907s (kernel) + 25.403s (userspace) = 33.311s

rally@silverbird:~/Desktop$ systemd-analyze blame
  7.601s NetworkManager-wait-online.service
  6.136s dev-sda4.device
  5.032s apparmor.service
  3.711s NetworkManager.service
  3.294s postfix.service
  3.257s accounts-daemon.service
  2.894s lightdm.service
  2.645s networking.service
  2.441s console-setup.service
  1.909s rsyslog.service
  1.868s polkitd.service
  1.832s grub-common.service
  1.587s systemd-fsck@dev-sr0.service
  1.549s rc-local.service
  1.299s keyboard-setup.service
  1.146s irqbalance.service
  1.038s systemd-journald.service
.and lots of other suff taking less and less time to get started.

I noticed tor.service was starting at boot and I haven't been using it so I
did...

rally@silverbird:~/Desktop$ systemctl status tor.service
rally@silverbird:~/Desktop$ sudo systemctl stop tor.service
rally@silverbird:~/Desktop$ sudo systemctl disable tor.service

rally@silverbird:~/Desktop$ systemctl | grep service
will also give a list of services starting up (configured in the /etc/rc.
files)

All the services that start on mine seem necessary. 33 seconds isn't to bad
but if my laptop booted faster that would be nice. The /etc/rc. files allow
for changing the order in which different things boot. Tor had a problem
because I don't hook up to the internet by default and it was trying to.

I know there is a lot more one can do with systemd and systemctl. I'm no
expert.

[Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?

2018-06-11 Thread smirnov . dmitri
Russian language is the official working language in UN. There about 291M
native Russian speaking people around the World. In Russian world there are a
lot talented programmers, engineers, 'linuxoids' etc. Due to recent political
tensions last time, as far I know government of Russian Federation looking
for IT technologies replacement. Even they started to own OS ReactOS (I am
not sure that this is 200% of Russian development, but government do some
invest there, but doesn't matter right now). Also they using some GNU/Linuxes
stuff for military purposes. Only idiot will install Windows on the detecton
missile systems :-).

So I think Triquel website could be translated into Russian. Community can
get a lot of talented people or those are interested in free software
philosophy. Is there any technical obstacles to do this? Or any other reason?

For example my native language is Russian, but not living in RF since my
birth. I could at free time (yes! yes! free time is very limited resource :-)
) start to translate pages 1 by 1.

Thanks for your read.

Trisquel is a long-term support (LTS) distro, which means that when a new
version of a program is available, Trisquel will stick with the current version
until the next version of Trisquel is released. GuixSD is a rolling distro,
meaning that it always has the latest version of every package. If you require
a later version of a package than what is included in Trisquel 8, you can use
the Guix package manager to install it.

If Totem crashing fixes your audio, I guess you should add Totem to Startup
Applications so that it crashes upon login. :)

What did you do after Totem crashed to get audio back? Did it just start
working, or did you have to do something in sound settings? Are you able to
kill and restart pulseaudio while your audio is working?

Hello everyone,

I am still facing this issue. Does anyone have an idea?

For information: when I am now starting my computer it takes 3 minutes (more
or less) to have a fluid desktop. This is happening since the last upgrade of
Friday. This is strange I think. Can we get a log of what is running / done
once I log in after starting the computer?

Can anyone please explain the advantages of Guix, for a n00b like me? I
haven't researched too far yet, but it looks like the packages are similar to
what I already have available from the standard Trisquel repositories. I've
been careful to not add extra repos or PPA's to my system, as much as
possible, to try to retain respect for fully free software. Certain things,
however, I always run the latest version of (such as Keepass Password Safe
and LibreOffice), so for those I have been relying on PPA's or downloaded
*.deb packages. What would installing Guix give me?

[Trisquel-users] Speed up boot process of Trisquel 8

2018-06-11 Thread gnuser

Hey everyone,

I want to check everything that runs at boot time, to maybe eliminate some
stuff that is unnecessarily delaying the boot process. How would one do it?
To be clear, I don't use "network printers" or anything, I remember in T7
there was something about that.
Sorry to be "generic" in the question, but I don't know where to begin with
:)

Thanks.
