Re: [Trisquel-users] Transmission won't connect to trackers in Trisquel 8

2019-07-07 Thread strypey
Update: qBitTorrent is now downloading files, on two separate torrents. So it
does seem to be a problem specific with Transmission on Trisquel 8, not
torrents on Trisquel 8 in general, nor Transmission in general (working fine
on MacBook on the same net connection). I really like using Transmission and
it would great to get it working again. Would it help to file a bug on the
Trisquel bug tracker?

FYI my wife is using Transmission on her MacBook and it's still working fine.
I installed qBitTorrent on my T8 system. It has at least managed to download
the metadata from the magnet link, but it's not downloading any of the actual
files so far.

I know, there exist beautifull designed free software.
When I writed my reply, I was thinking more like:
Microsoft Office vs LibreOffice(which came from OpenOffice)
MacOs desktop vs mate (of course you can confugire it, but macos is already
configured)

Personally I switched to i3-gaps and adapta-nokto theme and papyrus icon set.
Thanks to threads on this forum :)

A little bit of "agressive" marketing can help :)
Example, convincing a hardware producer to sell with Free os, instead of
Windows.
Adding ads on website(like youtube, facebook, twitter), so more people can
see it and know about FreeSoftware. I know this is a little bit against the
principles, but the more people know it, the more people will be interested.

Try to convince family and friends in using FreeSoftware and Hardware.
Try to convince non-profits to use freeSoftware(software can be free, so let
them pay for the service), reusing refurbished hardware is more
ecological(with libreboot) and cheaper then buying a new hardware to replace
every 3-4 years, because we can't update the firmware.
When deploying a service for a client, explain the license they apply for and
whatever they can do with it, and what they can't do.
While doing business with clients, try to convince them multiple times(give
your personal experience with FreeSoftware).

Python 3 is also available in Trisquel.

[Trisquel-users] Installing newest Python on Trisquel 8?

2019-07-07 Thread andre

Hi fellow Trisquel users,

In need of new Python, I downloaded the source tarball from [1] and read the
readme.

At the moment I still have the Python 2.7 from Trisquel installed.
Before making a big mistake I would like to ask you what you would do next.
Thank you.

Locking down the source code is not the only way to make money from software,
as I tried to explain in

Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server

2019-07-07 Thread dave
Generally, if you search the web for instructions on installing / setting up
things like this on Ubuntu 16.04 you will find a procedure that works on
Trisquel 8.0 - as it is derived from Ubuntu 16.04. So a search for "wordpress
install Ubuntu 16.04" should get you what you need.

One caution though is to be careful reading through any guide that suggests
adding a repository / downloading software, so that you do not inadvertently
add anything non-free if your goal (since you are using Trisquel) is to keep
a free/libre system.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Atheros 9271 chipset "libre" but "non-free" in Debian - why ?

2019-07-07 Thread xliang9550
It seems that you (initially) confused "firmware-atheros" with
"firmware-ath9k-htc". The first is non-free firmware (mainly) for ath10k and
Atheros bluetooth. The second is free/libre and is in the main repository of
Debian, and provides free/libre firmware for ath9k-htc cards including
AR9271.

By installing the non-free package "firmware-atheros", you installed lots of
non-free blobs, not only for your AR9271 but also for ath10k and bluetooth.
You should remove this package and reinstall "firmware-ath9k-htc" (I'm glad
to see that you've already done so.). Debian's non-official ISO images with
non-free firmware are not good, either, so stay away from them.

I have been Debian testing/unstable user for years. I routinely test the
weekly builds of Debian (testing) installer. Strangely, although
"firmware-ath9k-htc" is free/libre, it is not integrated into the installer
image. If I insert an AR9271 during installation, the installer doesn't
prompt me to provide the free/libre firmware package (firmware-ath9k-htc). I
wonder whether it shall be integrated into new Debian testing (bullseye)
installer image.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Atheros 9271 chipset "libre" but "non-free" in Debian - why ?

No. The firmware was never added in the kernel to begin with; it's a separate
package to install.

so, if I installed the 4.19 linux-libre kernel into Debian 10 it should work

Thanks jxself !

very kind of you to explain, and most weird from Debian I must say ...

Ok, away it goes, I'll try and see how to use the new firmware-ath9k-htc.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Start a Business Using Only Free and Open Source Tools!

2019-07-07 Thread davidpgil
I know of a few free software projects out there that are "beautiful" as you
say and not "retro". The good thing about free software is that we can decide
to make it beautiful or modern if we care to do so. non-free software is not
always modern and beautiful and if you as a user wanted to make it beautiful,
you couldn't.

if free software was sold more often, we might be able to clear up the
preconception that free software must be also low quality. part of the reason
why i brought up this topic, was to discuss how we can make free software
more immediately and obviously more valuable than proprietary software. is
locking down the source code the only way to make money from software?

This is important to reflect on.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Atheros 9271 chipset "libre" but "non-free" in Debian - why ?

2019-07-07 Thread jason
That's because the firmware used to be non-free. And get this: Even though
the free firmware appeared in March 2013 -- over 6 years ago -- the free
version only appeared in a Debian release with version 10, Buster. So much
for a distro that's supposed to care about matters such as software freedom,
huh?

Anyway, the package containing the free version of the firmware is
firmware-ath9k-htc. If you have installed firmware-atheros then you really
have installed non-free software -- please remove it. We don't have the
source code or a free license for that version; only the newer one in
firmware-ath9k-htc.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server

Since the netinstall isos and text mode installation do not work I will just
use a Trisquel mini installation. I suppose that will work fine?

Now, I have installed apache2, mysql-server and php7.0-mysql which I believe
to be the necessary software for the server part.

For my first page I want to setup a wordpress blog.

Wordpress in in the repository and I have installed it, but the terminal does
not recognise 'wordpress' as a command.

Q: How do I setup wordpress in/on (which is the right terminology?) Apache?

[Trisquel-users] Atheros 9271 chipset "libre" but "non-free" in Debian - why ?

2019-07-07 Thread mjmh

Hi All !

I'm confused !
Decided to invest in a wifi usb dongle that has the Atheros AR9271 chipset,
thinking

if it's "libre" it should work with any distro...

Decided to have a look at the newly released Debian 10, only to realise that
Debian

list the atheros-firmware (in this case ath9k) as "non-free" !

https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=firmware-atheros

I was wondering if someone could explain or has a link (from fsf ?) so that i
can
read up on why there are differences in what libre distro's vs Debian
consider non-free.

Thanks !

PS: The Debian 10 live+nonfree iso works (after network preference
adjustment).
