Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommended Music players?
I bet it could run .ape files too. mpv uses ffmpeg, so if your installed version of ffmpeg supports Monkey's audio so will mpv.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommended Music players?
Monkey's Audio (*.ape) is not a free-as-in-freedom format. There are free implementations of Monkey's audio in Rockbox, ffmpeg and a JAVA one called JMAC (audacious's implementation is probably based on one of these three). The main issue with the format is high CPU usage while decoding, but this issue probably isn't significant for desktop usage (there are also other audio formats with high CPU usage such as Opus).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommended Music players?
Does it support .ape files? I just tested a sample from the site below and it works fine in Hyperbola's packaged version of audacious. http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/A-codecs/lossless/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Improve html5 live video streaming
Try watching/downloading it using streamlink. Streamlink supports multiple connections (in this example I used 8) which can prevent buffering: streamlink --loglevel debug --hls-segment-threads 8 --hls-segment-timeout 100 --hls-timeout 600 --hls-playlist-reload-attempts 10 --hls-live-edge 3 'https://sportbar.biz/lba/MGJiNzBiYjk4ZDdlNzkxNWJjNzNiNDFlNTYxOGIwZDI=/g3/sk2serbia.m3u8?token=MGJiNzBiYjk4ZDdlNzkxNWJjNzNiNDFlNTYxOGIwZDI=' worst -o file.flv
Re: [Trisquel-users] extract rar file freely?
The problem is we do not know anything about the proprietary firmware. It could have been as well programmed to perform malicious tasks. Or, which is give or less the same, it could have been written terribly, full of (sec) bugs, and therefore exploitable. Trouble is also most firmware gets very rarely, if ever, updated. So you are stuck with buggy, insecure firmware that you (or anyone in your place) can not fix. Stock BIOS updates are usually only provided in the first few months of a laptop's release in order to resolve issues such as difficulties installing operating systems that are not shipped with the laptop. Once the main issues are addressed by the laptop manufacturer no BIOS updates are to be expected and users rarely if ever perform BIOS updates. As long as the BIOS update is based on the last BIOS revision for your laptop it should be as secure as the stock BIOS.
Re: [Trisquel-users] extract rar file freely?
Any "rogue" firmware modified by 3rd party can never be trusted. Sounds like FUD to me. The original firmware can be trusted even less as it includes the wireless firmware whitelist antifeature. If I understand correctly the 3rd party BIOS images are made by disassembling the stock BIOSes so their security should be comparable. Unless of course you can prove that the developers of these BIOSes inserted rogue code your claim seems devoid of merit.
Re: [Trisquel-users] extract rar file freely?
Middleton's BIOS isn't more free than the factory BIOS, and it might be worse security-wise What makes you think it is less secure than the original BIOS? It sounds like FUD to me.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Use battery 1 before battery 0?
Battery charging has to be defined in the BIOS since you want be able to discharge the battery when you access the BIOS settings on battery power alone. You can override the hardware settings directly from GNU/Linux using tp_smapi according to the wiki page I provided a link to.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Use battery 1 before battery 0?
I'm not sure how libreboot handles UltraBay batteries but according to this wiki the regular BIOS actually first depletes the UltraBay battery before using the normal battery. You might find the settings you are after in the wiki as well. thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_use_UltraBay_batteries Maybe this bug is relevant too? notabug.org/libreboot/libreboot/issues/56
Re: [Trisquel-users] extract rar file freely?
I tried extracting the archive mentioned with unar version 1.10.1 on Hyperbola and I encountered the same errors. The cause of the issue is that some RAR files cannot be extracted using unar although most files should work fine as unar does support newer versions of the RAR format.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9.0 + xfce = Trixquel...? Trixel...?
Triskel is (as far as I know) simply an option when using the net install which installs all KDE packages - this can also be achieved by installing a basic system using the net install and then installing the KDE packages once you are done. It is not an official Trisquel version unlike LXDE or MATE. trisquel.info/en/wiki/installing-kde You can simply install a basic system and then the Xfce packages to achieve what you desire (i.e. a simple version of Trisquel which only contains Xfce without unneeded packages).

Midori released new releases in the last 6 months - versions 6.0 and 7.0 use a newer WebKit. You can install it via Snap: github.com/midori-browser/core There's also a newer version of Icecat (60.3) which you can install manually by unpacking the tar.bz2 file: ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gnuzilla/60.3.0/

Re: [Trisquel-users] Newer Software versions (gimp, libreoffice, blender and others)
You should try to stay on the old version. https://jxself.org/versionitis/ Using the old version is fine as long as the distro you are using provides security updates in a timely manner (which unfortunately means discarding all programmes provided in Trisquel from Ubuntu's user repository "Universe" as they don't always receive timely security updates).

Re: [Trisquel-users] How change the theme of abrowser (or another free web browser) so be darker?
I don't recommend add-ons that invert colors as these don't work well on some websites (and might become unusable in future releases as well if they aren't maintained). My advise is to find a dark (but not too dark as black background is not fully compatible with some websites) system GTK theme (I'm using Arc-Dark) and then to select in your browser "use system colors". You can customize some additional settings such as the color of text/visited/unvisited links. I'm using a dark grey background so that black text (if presented by the website such as this one for icons such as "Attach") is also visible. Of course this means that all programmes will now use this theme so if you only want dark text in the browser then this is not ideal and the add-on method or dark theme setting in the browser (if available) is preferred. GTK themes can be used in Qt applications as well (after editing some text files), so Qt applications without a dark mode can be made to look almost the same as GTK ones.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Arabic/Hebrew in LibreOffice
I don't think it's helpful to tell people to rebase their entire working environment over one little snag. That leads to a dangerous game of constantly re-installing and never getting anything done. Note that there are lots of threads about updating software to newer versions in the forums (recently someone asked about updating Ethereum), so it should be pointed out that Trisquel has old software some of which does not receive security updates unless it is from Ubuntu's main repository, and that one should not in general mess around with upgrading packages and libraries via PPA or by compiling from source to the root directory as those are not supported by Trisquel (e.g. it can lead to issues when installing other packages which depend on older libraries).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Arabic/Hebrew in LibreOffice
Actually they only only need one thing to be learned: compiling from source. That's useful for small packages which don't require new libraries, but not for larger ones such as WebKit in which case my original advise still stands.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Arabic/Hebrew in LibreOffice
If you need more up to date software than what is offered by Trisquel you should consider using a distribution with more up to date software, such as Parabola or Hyperbola. Libreoffice can be updated via PPA. These commands will add it and then you can install the version you want via apt-get. $sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa $sudo apt-get update
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video driver for a newbie
Recent versions of Virtualbox have freedom issues and have thus been removed from Trisquel. Re: [Trisquel-users] Minifree now selling libre routers with libreCMC preinstalled :)
Apparently, u-boot can be upgraded within LibreCMC if you build the correct image (if the default build does not already support this - I do not know). Hopefully, the minifree versions will support this feature (and provide links to working u-boot images). https://github.com/pepe2k/u-boot_mod http://www.8devices.com/wiki/openwrt:recipes:build_mtdblock0_writeable:for_u-boot_upgrade_with_writeable_mtdblock0_1_partitions I'm not sure if the manufacturer's u-boot can be easily built the source code provided (the build scripts might be missing) so I'm not sure it's free (although a free version could be made from it and flashed).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Minifree now selling libre routers with libreCMC preinstalled :)
The price.. good Lord At first glance the price does indeed seem expensive. However, when searching online for the price, it seems that this router is sold new for at least 139 dollars, so minifree's product is competitively priced. https://www.cnet.com/products/netgear-n600-dual-band-gigabit-router-premium-edition/prices/ I got mine for less. Of course I did install librecmc myself, but it wasn't really hard. I'm guessing you only replaced the router's firmware (e.g. via the browser interface) without the bootloader. The minifree version will also contain a free bootloader (uboot) unlike the manufacturer's version.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebox (with Coreboot) - Hello Again
The free native graphics in libreboot seems to be a hack which doesn't work well for certain use cases - e.g. I cannot use a T60 laptop with Intel graphics connected to an external monitor via DVI connection after disassembling the laptop's monitor which is my current setup.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebox (with Coreboot) - Hello Again
There's quite a lot of proprietary code being run by libreboot such as CPU microcode (without updates), EC firmware, SSD/HDD firmware etc. Whenever they find a free replacement they use it, but the computer is far from 100 percent free when using libreboot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebox (with Coreboot) - Hello Again
Not all coreboot features are necessarily malicious, e.g. the proprietary VGA option ROM which supports more laptop monitors than the free libreboot native graphics implementation.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Display issue (probably font rendering) on Abroswer
Pale Moon also contains this clause: Unofficial branding ("New Moon") as supplied in the source code may be used for unendorsed binaries at all times. Thusly branded binaries with the New Moon logo and product name are not subject to the endorsement and exception rules as set out in previous points of this license and may be freely distributed in altered or unaltered form, subject to the Mozilla Public License as regards source code changes and availability. This permission does, however, not include any rights or license to the Pale Moon name and logo that may still be present in the resulting unofficially branded binaries.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Display issue (probably font rendering) on Abroswer
Palemoon is just as free as Firefox or Seamonkey - if you build these with different icons then the binary file can be free software (e.g. Iceape and IceCat/Abrowser are free), but if you use the compiled binaries provided they are not.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 install didn't detect my monitor, gave wrong resolution.
If you run "cd ~/" you will compile the driver in your home directory. If you want to compile it somewhere else then just cd to that directory instead. To build in home directory just remove this text "#or whatever directory you want to use for this build". The instructions will compile and install the sis driver that is missing from Trisquel 8 (but appears in older versions of Trisquel), so once installed your monitor should be recognized. You can always blacklist the driver at boot if it causes problems and then you can use the vesa driver instead (which is probably what you are using now as the sis graphics package is missing from your system).
Re: [Trisquel-users] National flag in the bottom panel
Do you mean the country flag corresponding to the keyboard layout? If so just search online for "lxde keyboard layout country flag" and you should find info on how to configure it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 install didn't detect my monitor, gave wrong resolution.
The last post in this thread will probably solve the issue for the OP (these are instructions regarding compilation of SIS driver from source): https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2371684 sudo apt-get install build-essential xorg-dev xutils-dev automake libtool cd ~/ #or whatever directory you want to use for this build wget http://xorg.freedesktop.org/releases/individual/driver/xf86-video-sis-0.10.9.tar.bz2 tar -xjf xf86-video-sis-0.10.9.tar.bz2 cd xf86-video-sis-0.10.9/ autoconf automake ./configure --prefix=/usr/local make sudo make install
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 install didn't detect my monitor, gave wrong resolution.
It's not just missing from Ubuntu but from Debian too starting with Debian 8 (Jessie.) And that is why people using SIS graphics cannot upgrade to Debian Jessie, as reported for instance in this post: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=7=133773
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 install didn't detect my monitor, gave wrong resolution.
The issue might be that the package xserver-xorg-video-sis is missing in the Ubuntu release on which Trisquel 8 is based (16.04) but appears in the Ubuntu release on which Trisquel 7 is based (14.04) as you can see here: https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=xserver-xorg-video-sis Have you tried Trisquel 7 to see if this package is the cause of your issues? If so, you might need to compile it manually in Trisquel 8.
Re: [Trisquel-users] FSDG and pip
I agree with onpon4. In addition, pip does not require cryptographic package signing using tools such as GPG so you could be downloading altered packages if someone breaks into the PyPI website and replaces a package with a malicious version. PyPI did in fact contain malicious packages in the past - the issue was reported online, e.g. here: https://developers.slashdot.org/story/17/09/16/2030229/pythons-official-repository-included-10-malicious-typo-squatting-modules Of course the package signing problem can also occur on code repositories such as GitLab as well if those do not impose GPG signing of commits (which I gather most do not). Of course the GNU/Linux package managers do not solve the problem if they grab code from such code repositories without verifying the cryptographic signatures of the original developers.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on non-x86 systems
Trisquel has never supported other architectures even if those offered freer computers, such as the Lemote Yeelong MIPS laptop (which was supported by gNewSense). This might have been partially due to Ubuntu focusing on x86 releases compared to Debian. I understand the logic regarding the need to leave the x86 architecture. However, a non-rolling libre distribution should first and foremost provide timely releases with up to date software/libraries. Trisquel has suffered greatly from postponed releases which has led to users migrating to other libre distributions such as Parabola and Hyperbola (or simply using other distributions with minimal amount of non-free packages). I think this should be the primary concern of Trisquel before it considers adding support for other architectures which most users will not use until computers using those architectures are sold in their local computer shops.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on non-x86 systems
Shouldn't Trisquel focus on timely releases for x86 (which most people use) before supporting other architectures? The latest version of Trisquel is based on a two and a half old release of Ubuntu (which means a lot of software is outdated). The priority should be on releasing a new version of Trisquel based on Ubuntu 18.04 before supporting other less popular architectures.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Computer only restarts when shutdown attempted with Trisquel 8
I also encountered a shutdown problem where the kernel shutdown worked but shutdown failed when using the terminal or the menu. I contacted the Hyperbola developer via IRC and he fixed the issue (which was that the packaged version of SliM at the time did not support OpenRC). I'm guessing you could open a bug report or contact the developer on IRC as well.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Computer only restarts when shutdown attempted with Trisquel 8
Since the shutdown worked correctly when using the kernel's shutdown command (it is preferable to run the full version I provided as it is a safer shutdown), I'm guessing the issues you have stem from bugs either in your desktop environment (MATE/KDE/Xfce etc), in your display manager (GDM/LightDM/XDM/SLiM etc) or in your init system (Systemd/OpenRC etc).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Computer only restarts when shutdown attempted with Trisquel 8

Re: [Trisquel-users] Why doesn't Trisquel 8 use Iridium browser as default browser?
Because it already has a free software browser (Abrowser) which Trisquel's developer maintains (which includes removing suggestions of non-free add-ons, removing DRM support, and providing a free add-on repository). Making Iridium completely free would likely also require some work (such as maintaining a list of free add-ons and ensuring support for DRM is removed).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
loldier, I agree with t3g that it might be better to prioritize the release of Trisquel 9 over releasing both Trisquel 8 and Trisquel 9, since Trisquel 8 is based on an almost 2 year old system. Since Ubuntu LTS releases are supported for 5 years, Trisquel does not need to offer all the versions, but when it does release a new version it is preferable that it is based on an up to date release so that once installed the user can use it for almost 5 years. Trisquel 8 will only be usable for up to 3 years because it is based on a 2 year old release.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
I agree with t3g that Trisquel should be based on an up to date version of Ubuntu, so that it will be compatible with new software and libraries (without requiring messing around with unofficial repositories). t3g, if you need more up to date software libraries and packages in the meantime you can try the stable Hyperbola distribution (based on Arch with Debian patches but not a rolling release) or the rolling release Parabola. Waiting for releases of Trisquel, which has cut down on releases since version 6 (beforehand they also had non-LTS releases such as 5.5) to focus on long term releases, and has also stopped providing releases in a timely manner (Trisquel 8 should have come out half a year after the Ubuntu it is based on was released which is almost 18 months ago), seems a wasted effort at this point in time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] SNAP, a door to non free software!
How is this any different to pip or easy_install?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Any plans to dump systemd ?
Hyperbola is the closest you will find to updated Trisquel without systemd - it is based on Arch (with Debian patches) without being a rolling release, so packages will usually only receive security updates and long term versions are preferred (e.g. a libre version of Iceweasel ESR as opposed to Abrowser).
