Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
I don't know if that's true, but you probably know more than I do, I only started using GNU in 2014.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
That does seem very suspicious to me. Unless Cinnamon has been revamped in some way to maximize battery life with less or more efficient code... etc, Dunno though. XFCE is my choice of desktop environment now that lxqt is going to become the norm... I am still curious why the makers of lxde are switching to qt...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
>except maybe for Xfce and Cinnamon, whose additional requirements will make a difference on an old computer, say with less than 512 MB of RAM). I am running Debian with Xfce (full environment, xfwm included, no openbox) and when I freshly boot my OS the RAM usage is around 270 mb. Now, my VPN client takes some 140 mb, I can open irssi, profanity (jabber client), cmus and cmus-lyrics (those 4 is stick in tmux for my pseudo-nerdy satisfaction), then I open Firefox Quantum and also the TorBB and the memory usage still does not get to a full 1 gb of RAM, it stays around 900/950 mb. Without the VPN client that would be around 800 mb of RAM. Xfce is simply amazing as far as resource consumption goes, especially if you consider how complete a DE it is and how modern it looks with just 5 minutes of tweaking. I used to run MATE in the past. The two are give or take the same as RAM consumption goes, or at least it was in the past, say a couple of years ago, when I ran it. LXDE is faster for sure, but a rather incomplete experience compared to say XFCE or MATE. Cinnamon is way, way slower than both Xfce and MATE, really not comparable - try Xfce and Cinnamon on a 12 years old laptop. Install first Cinnamon and use it for a day and then do the same with Xfce: night and day, Xfce is twice smoother.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
Yes, you're right about the histogram, I didn't notice! It's also true that the choice of window manager alone will make little difference unless the computer is very antique. I do find that certain window managers lend themselves better to a minimalist approach than others. For an old computer especially, I would leave out the desktop environment and pick components carefully. Install only a WM and cherry pick other necessary programs as needed (maybe wicd for WiFi, pulseaudio with volume icon, and others as needed). Try to keep things simple and few unneccesary processes, units/modules running. And yes, modern web browsing may not be an option if the system is too old. I find libreoffice to be resource heavy as well.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
I agree with both of maestro SuperTramp's responses. As to LFS, why not follow SuperTramp's suggestion of any netintall with lightweight WM (no DE needed) first and then build LFS on a VM for fun. You didn't mention how much RAM you have. For WM if you like tiling you're in luck, many can run on just a few MB of RAM. I like i3wm which takes maybe 3MB. There's a comparison graph at the bottom of this post: https://l3net.wordpress.com/2013/03/17/a-memory-comparison-of-light-linux-desktops/ If you want a particular distro recommendation, I would recommend Parabola, as you then have the excellent Arch Wiki to teach and guide you (as long as you keep away from proprietary recommendations). Particularly as you mention you're not yet so comfortable setting things up without a gui.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
Though maybe a bit outdated, there is also Librepup based on trisquel7 packages and linux-libre. With that you can wake up any old computer. iso here https://archive.org/details/librepup-6.0.2.0 forul thread http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=101106 librepup.info is now a dead link
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
I've been going through Linux From Scratch myself and I highly recommend it. It gives a great level of insight into how GNU/Linux is constructed; how to configure and compile source code; and how to build your own custom Linux kernel. I found it also brings a level of appreciation for the package managers and how much easier they make things :) I probably won't end up using it for my day-to-day computing, but it's a great learning tool. Could also be useful for playing around with new applications/code, before they make it into the Trisquel repository.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
GUI apps won't slow down anything when they are not in use.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
Im fine with no gui package manager, however, as of yet I am not comfortable with installing without a gui. Maybe it's time for me to get comfortable? I think first I want to finally work through "Linux from Scratch" so I finally get a fundamental understanding of how to custom build my OS. I can pile that onto my goals for some point in the future. > Original Message > Subject: Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz > 32-bit Laptop? > Local Time: December 31, 2017 3:45 PM > UTC Time: December 31, 2017 8:45 PM > From: calmst...@posteo.de > To: trisquel-users@listas.trisquel.info > > If anyone wants a lightweight distro, it will likely have no package manager > in gui form and be arch based in some way... thus, if that's what you would > want I would recommend Hyperbola. If anyone wants a lightweight distro, it will likely have no package manager in gui form and be arch based in some way... thus, if that's what you would want I would recommend Hyperbola. But its not newbie friendly yet as it doesn't have a gui installer calamares... not yet anyways.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
I dunno, I prefer sysvinit + openrc. But to each his own.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
You make a good point. I think for now, im going to just remove LXDE and use Blackbox while keeping the Trisquel Mini install. Alternately, I may just keep it as a CLI only laptop. Maybe it will get me to improve my meager bash skills. In my experience, there is no such thing as the fastest distribution, rather a minimal net install of any gnuxino with as few crap installed as possible, a decent DE or window manager.. It's all gahnuu and it's all fast but you need to set it right. Using lightweight software is really what makes all the difference in the world..
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
"100 GHz..." lol. Very interesting that GNU-Linux distro!! maybe this one is more suitable for my netbook with 32bits atom n270 than Devuan. (Devuan is too outdated). Does ConnochaetOS have ShitstemD?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
I would say an x200 with libreboot and hyperbola if you experienced enough, otherwise I would go with FreeSlack or ConnochaetOS. IF you want something very easy but don't have an issue with systemd, I would go for uruk or trisquel. Some people care, some don't. That's about it. That's my thoughts.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
Haha, I think it would be fun to have a good reason to try to use Guix SD actually... > Original Message > Subject: Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz > 32-bit Laptop? > Local Time: December 28, 2017 4:24 PM > UTC Time: December 28, 2017 9:24 PM > From: iwakura.l...@riseup.net > To: trisquel-users@listas.trisquel.info > > In my experience, the "fastest" Libre GNU/Linux distributions were (in this > order) GuixSD, dragora, Parabola OpenRC. > > Openbox, twm, i3, windowmaker, are all great window managers that should keep > your ram usage really low.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
It is not necessary install these window managers, SliTaz(LXDE) + Linux-Libre 50 MB on ram and 2% CPU normal usage on a i486.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
SliTaz + Linux-Libre.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
In my experience, the "fastest" Libre GNU/Linux distributions were (in this order) GuixSD, dragora, Parabola OpenRC. Openbox, twm, i3, windowmaker, are all great window managers that should keep your ram usage really low.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
There really shouldn't be a difference between Mini and LXDE since they are the same thing...but for whatever reason Mini uses more ram and take longer to come up after login. I have no idea why. Its probably not a lot more ram, but on an old system it is very noticeable since you don't have the ram to spare. Openbox is faster than LXDE, LXDE uses Openbox actually. The difference in marginal though. I use the terminal a lot and I can say that that works very well. Another window manager I have used is DWM, which is made by the same people behind Surf (suckless.org check them out if your into minimalist computing). It is a tiling window manager. That is very snappy. Surf is really just the most minimal UI built around the Webkit engine, that what takes much of the overhead away. The trade-off is that it is a literal window to the internet with no options. It doesn't have an ad-blocker (but you can kill javascript which gets most of them), no tabs, no bookmarks, etc. I have found it has made me more productive though because I have to fully engage with whatever I am looking at and don't have the option to run a game or a stupid news site in another tab.

Maybe Dragora with openbox? Latest stable release i old but for very old machines it should work great.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
Interesting. I thought Trisquel Mini was just a rebranded LXDE. Are you suggesting I install LXDE or Openbox and get rid of Trisquel Mini DE? Which is faster between LXDE and Openbox? Thanks for the suggestion of using Surf. I was using Midori and was not too impressed with it. Lots of pages I visit just wouldn't load. I'm wondering if I should be using this computer as a terminal-only laptop... Re: [Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
I use Mini on an X20, which is from the same era. The big thing to make sure you do is not use the Mini session, use either LXDE proper or Openbox. Both are already installed on Mini so it is just a matter of switching sessions at log-in. For web browsing I use Surf and Abiword for spell checking, but I do most of my writing in Plain Text first, then I just run it through Abiword for spelling/grammar check purposes. Icecat and Libre Office simply suck too much ram to be useful.
[Trisquel-users] Fastest Libre GNU/Linux Distro for 800mhz 32-bit Laptop?
I have an old Thinkpad T21 that I want to get more use out of but it's so darn slow with Trisquel 7 Mini. Would you suggest a good Libre Distro and/orDesktop environment for this laptop?
