Step 3 makes you see the step 4 for sure.
I think this is the best procedure to restore best situation.

It seems that the /home partition is not encrypted, then there are numerous
ways to retrieve the pictures. The easiest way may be logging on your better
half's account and copy the Pictures folder of your account to her home
directory (if there is enough disk space remaining on the /home partition):

sudo cp -r /home/worse_half/Pictures/* .

Replace "worse_half" with your account name.

Another alternative to external boot (works up to Trisquel v8):

1. Hold [Shift] key when booting computer (don't wait anything appears
on screen)
2. You will be presented with a black screen titled "GNU GRUB"
3. With keyboard arrows, select "Advanced options for Trisquel
GNU/Linux" and press ENTER.
4. Select "Trisquel GNU... (recovery mode)" and press ENTER
5. After many boot messages, you will be presented with a blue screen
6. Use keyboard arrows to select "network" option and press ENTER (this
will enable write capabilities to system volume)
7. In same menu/screen select "root" option and press ENTER

Let's assume user accounts are called "wife" and "husband".

Type in this, to reset "husband" password:
passwd husband +ENTER

After this, you can type in the "reboot" command and you will be
entirely happy.

One possible alternative to external boot:

Let's assume user accounts are called "wife" and "husband".
IF "wife" account has admin/sudo rights, using this account she can
explore "husband" folders and get his files.

When using standard Trisquel (Mate):
1. Applications menu
2. Accessories
3. MATE Terminal
4. Type in: sudo caja +ENTER
5. Click on UP arrow icon, and you will see both accounts folders

When using Trisquel mini (LXDE)
1. Applications menu
2. System tools
3. LXTerminal
4. Type in: sudo pcmanfm +ENTER
5. Click on UP arrow icon, and you will see both accounts folders

This is what I would suggest if the OP wanted to go back to using this
system. I am under the impression that they just want to recover data
from it, which can be achieved more easily by mounting the disk with
graphical tools.

You can reset your user password by chrooting using a live CD:

Ah. Just reread your message and saw that you were able to get into your
wife's account. This means that the disk is not encrypted, which is
good. That was my worry, since the graphical Trisquel installer has an
option to encrypt the entire disk. It does not have an option to encrypt
your home folder, so unless you used the text installer (which does have
such an option) you should be okay.

Do you recall whether you encrypted your disk or home directories when
installing Trisquel? If so, you're out of luck without a password. If
not, the following might work:

You'll need a bootable CD or USB running Trisquel (or another distro).
If you don't have one and don't know how to create one, see here.[1]

Boot into the CD or USB drive and select "Try Trisquel without
installing."

Once you're in a Trisquel live session, open the file manager. On the
left-hand side of the window you will see a list of media. Hopefully
your hard disk will be in there. If the disk is not encrypted, you
should be able to click on it and mount it without a password.

If that works, you should see a "home" directory. Enter it. There, you
should see a directory for each user. If they are not encrypted, you
should be able to enter these folders without a password.

If that works, copy the files you want to recover onto some other
medium.

Good luck!
