No, sorry. It means I tried to backport it, but something went wrong
and it didn't work. Then I got tied up working on Etiona stuff and
forgot to return to this. I'll take another look this weekend. Sorry
about that.

I'm going to try to backport it so that it can just be installed from
Trisquel 8's backports repository.

i think people will jump on the alpha release this Thursday if this security
issue "https://trisquel.info/en/issues/26072; is not solved xD

Jami provides an apt repository. If you edit /etc/apt/sources.list as
root and add the line

deb https://dl.jami.net/ring-nightly/ubuntu_16.04/ ring main

You should be able to then run

$ sudo apt update && sudo apt install jami-all

to get the latest version of Jami. However, another Trisquel user is
interested in learning to backport packages, with the intent to backport
a newer version of Jami, so if you are willing to wait, a newer version
of Jami may soon be in Trisquel 8's repos anyway.

Keepassx is trickier. The version in Trisquel 9 requires a newer
version of libgcrypt20 than the version that Trisquel 8 has. I'm not
sure how difficult this will be to make work. I'll look into it and get
back to you. Reply to this post reminding me if I don't follow up
within a few days.

yes for now i do need to install jami or ring! and upgrade keepassx from
2.0.2 to 2.0.3

cause the lastest release fixes some importante issues and make it stable

i will try to learn more before doing that, thank you for your help i
appreciate it.

I'm not aware of any privacy-hostile changes between Ubuntu 16.04 and
Ubuntu 18.04. If have been such changes, I would like to know so we can
fix them. Otherwise, Trisquel 9 should be equally privacy-respecting to
Trisquel 8. There are some features and artwork still missing, but none
whose absence would cause privacy issues, I think.

If anything, I would expect Trisquel 9 to be more secure than Trisquel 8
at this time. Since Ubuntu does not backport security fixes to their
universe repository, newer versions of Ubuntu are more secure because
they are more up-to-date with the upstream developers. When I look at
what packages are still missing from Trisquel, I don't see any whose
absence is a likely security risk.

You can download debs from archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/pool/main, but
in general this is not a good idea. If Trisquel 8 has all of the needed
dependencies of the package you want then it should go smoothly, but if
it does not then you will need to download those of the dependencies too,
which could get messy and even break your system, depending on how
low-level the dependencies are.

Are there specific packages that you need upgraded? If so, I might be
able to advise you on the best way to upgrade those particular packages.

We are close to having a working netinstaller. I hope that after this
Friday's meeting it will be ready. In the meantime, it is possible to
install Trisquel 8 and upgrade to Trisquel 9, or to debootstrap onto
another partition.

Some packages are not in the repos yet, but packages which are in the
repos already are stable, so how usable it is for you will depend on
which packages you need.

If I had to guess, given that I don't use trisquel anymore, it probably has a
year before being stable. As for when its beta, who knows...

Don't ever, ever upgrade to alpha operating systems unless you know the
risks. Just a heads up.
