[tslug] Folding@Home Effort

2004-09-13 Thread Justin West
Greetings all,

Many of you probably already know of Stanford University's [EMAIL PROTECTED]
project. If you don't, please take a look here:
http://folding.stanford.edu/

This project is a great cause. What this distributed computing project
is asking for is donated CPU cycles for disease research by running
projects which emulate protein folding. This allows scientists to begin
to understand why proteins "mis-fold" causing diseases and terminal
illnesses like Alzheimers, Mad Cow, Parkinson's, and more.

To join in on the effort, all you have to do is download a small app
that downloads a project, runs the emulation, sends the results back,
and repeats. This is also run as a low priority process on your system,
so you really don't even notice it is even running your CPU at 100% all
the time.

To add a competative atmosphere to the effort, you can join a folding
team by entering a team number when you configure the application. I
invite/ask that anyone who decides to join the effort to use Team #:
38296. This is the Legit Reviews Folding Team number. We have really
grown in members over the last few weeks and are actively in the
recruiting stage to get more members. if you would like some simple
installation instructions, I invite you to check out the quick "how
to:" I wrote up for Legit Reviews:
http://legitreviews.com/reviews/howtofold/

If anyone decides to join our team, let us know. We are always excited
to hear that we got someone else to start [EMAIL PROTECTED] you can simply
reply to this list, or join the Legit Review forums and throw a post in
this section: http://legitreviews.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=16

Well, sorry this message got so long, I just wanted to share this
information with everyone, and hopefully I'll get a few of you to join
in on this effort for a very good cause.

Thanks for your time,
Justin West

"Concerning the website: Would somebody be interested to give the FSCK

If this person would be interested he/she make a good officer for
'Public Relations' perhaps too -- that is designing posters and other
stuff alike.
...looks good on the resume to be more then simply an "active
member"... and is a cool job if you like that kind of stuff..."

I'll volunteer for the site... But I don't have much experience with

[tslug] Good Distros...

2004-09-01 Thread Justin West
Its time for me to switch to a different flavor of linux. Iâm wanting
to use a stable 2.6 kernel that also comes with the newest versions of
GIMP and OpenOffice.

Iâm not opposed to Gentoo, if there is an install that comes with GIMP
and OpenOfficeâ. If not, what other distros are there that would
satisfy my cravings?

Thanks for the advice,

Justin West

2004-08-31 Thread Justin West
I use a GSM phone in kirksville that is from my AT&T Wireless carrier
back in St. Louis. However, I get "311 40" listed instead of my "AT&T
Wireless" network display showing whose tower I'm connected to.

Also, I have yet to know whether or not I'm going to have to fight AT&T
on my bill for some outrageous charges for using this network.

If anyone knows what the "311 40" cell network is from, let me know.

Thanks,
Justin West

That version is several months old. A new version has come out recently,
I would recommend downloading it. A version a week older then the most
recent is available at:

[tslug] Campus-wide Technology Open Forum

2004-02-24 Thread Justin West
Hello All:

On behalf of the Student Senate Technology Committee, I would like to invite
everyone (Student/Faculty/Staff) to attend the Campus-wide Technology Open
Forum to take place in the Ryle Hall Main Lounge on Tuesday, March 2nd from
7-8:30pm.

At the Campus-wide Technology Open Forum, you will be given the opportunity
to ask any question related to technology that you may have to our organized
panel of experts. This includes, but is not limited to, topics such as the
new wireless internet service, network stability problems, and the upcoming
network upgrade. The panel of experts should include a representative from
ITS, along with Dr. Jon Beck (Computer Science Professor and former
Information Technology Leader of Truman), Adil Wali (Student voting member
of ITAC and President of the CGA), Nate Green (Member of the Student Senate
Technology Committee and Co-President of TSLUG), and a Moderator yet to be
determined.

This event should provide an excellent atmosphere for student voices to be
heard about concerns with Truman's technology issues and clear up any
confusion you may have. This will also provide the Student Senate Technology
Committee with the ability to gather information regarding the biggest
concerns of Truman Students, Faculty, and Staff. Refreshments will be
provided.

Until March 2nd, the Student Senate Technology Committee will also be
conducting an online survey to poll the student body on issues already at
hand. We encourage everyone to participate in that survey in preparation to
the Campus-wide Technology Open Forum. For incentive, a gift certificate
from Il Spazio will be awarded to a random survey participant after the
survey time-period is complete. The method in which we select a recipient of
the prize is not related, in any way, to your actual survey. To complete the
survey, Please login to http://survey.truman.edu/takeSurvey.asp?surveyID=52
with your student login id and password.

For further questions related to this topic that you would like to ask
before the Campus-wide Technology Open Forum, please contact one of the
committee members listed below or feel free to reply on this list.

Thank you for your time,

The Student Senate Technology Committee

I have a question.

I want to know who supports which Instant Messenger protocols. Maybe
name your first choice and then all the rest, or give a hierarchy, or
whatever.

It seems weird that we can all search for each other's email address,
but have to explicitly ask about IM. This could be such a powerful tool
for everyone if there was a nice/easy way to get people on your lists.
Sure, it could be used maliciously/annoyingly too, but I think it'd be
worth the tradeoff.

Anyway, I use gaim with aol and msn accounts.
What are your favorite flavors?

I’m a hardware guru… not a
linux guru… yet! ;)

Someone with a little more linux
experience will have to give you a better idea on the size of drive that fits
your needs. The 40 gig number was just a safe guess.

The size of the hard drive is up to
you… I wouldn’t go less than 40Gig. I would recommend finding a drive
that has an 8mb cache (the alternative is a 2mb cache) and is 7,200
RPM’s. Make sure that it is ATA/100 or ATA/133. (ATA/133 is faster).

Good luck and feel free to ask me any more
questions.

[tslug] Re: Linux PVR

2003-12-18 Thread Justin West
6 GB of disk space really will only get you about 2 hours of video ... so
you will really need to get a new hard drive. And if you get serious with
your "taping", you will want the hard drive you get to be really big
(80-120GB) and only for videos.

Just my $.02 -Justin

Subject: [tslug] Linux PVR

I have a system at home that I'm considering setting up as a Personal Video
Recorder (PVR) to record shows off of DirecTV or local channels if I need to
"tape" something. Of course, I don't want to spend any more money either.
:-)

I've looked some at the Freevo project, but have not yet attempted anything.

Some of my system specs are as follows:
CPU: AMD 900MHz (Thunderbird)
Video Card: ATI All-in-wonder 32 MB AGP (Rage 128)
RAM: 384 MB
Hard Drive: Only 6 GB now :-) I know I need some better storage space if I
get serious about this. I have another 6 GB available right now.
Notes: Also have a CD burner available. (Currently in another system but
could be moved). No DVD burner.
Current OS: RedHat Linux 9.0

I'm curious about any experience any of you have with setting up a PVR box.
It would be nice to eventually have something with a guide and live pausing,
but right now I'm just looking for recording (timer recording).

What tips and/or suggestions do you have?

BTW, I hope to someday set up one that can record in HD, but right now my
video card doesn't support that and I only have a handful of HD channels
anyway.

Thanks,
Chad

Another thought I just had that we would need a lot of help with... If
you noticed, we have the AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 system on our test
bench... if interested, we have the equipment to do a review of the
FX-51 on a 64-bit Linux platform... but, as I mentioned, we would have
to be taught how to do this.

Great, thanks for the feed back! I will talk to the site owner...
However, if we pursue this, we will need to ask for someone's time to
help us with these tests, or at least teach us how... currently none of
us on the site are avid linux users... I am working a 6-month
internship this semester in St. Louis.. otherwise I would be at the

January.

If anyone is interested in donating their time to teach me how to test
your requests, please let me know. My fiance is in Kirksville now, so I
visit her every few weeks... so I would be more than happy to bring a
video card up and have someone help me learn to test those linux
features some weekend.

Also... what do I need to do again to add a different email address to
the mailing list... I would like to add [EMAIL PROTECTED] because it
is easier for me to check that email since my IE is broken (won't
display popup windows at all, so I use Opera to check my truman email
through pipeline... and of course there are bugs... not trying to bring
up a known sore spot though).

Thanks again!
