Yes, of all the uses of the phrase "son of a bitch" over the last three
days, its use by a mid-level, mid-pack cable news anchor is definitley the
most offensive...

Star Trek, it was OK (better than Orville). But as canonical Trek, it was
bitterly disappointing.

What is regarded as the least successful of the Trek TV shows was the
Enterprise prequel. For them to attempt another prequel, they needed to
connect the dots, bridge the gap, or whatever other metaphor is suitable.
In this, they failed. As with damned near every rebooted TV franchise over
the last 20 years, it would have been better as a standalone entity.

I've no need to pay to stream a poorly thought out concept, even if the
effects are nifty, and even if the sound effects are familiar.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: CIN-GB delaying Discovery

2017-09-25 Thread M-D November
The best way I can think of to describe The Orville is “TNG with dick jokes”,
but I was impressed by the amount of world building and backstory established
in the pilot without a lot of infodump conversations. They also acknowledged
that the audience has at least a basic knowledge of Trek and didn’t bother to
spoonfeed basic tenants of Trek like warp drive.

As for the NuTrek films, remember that those films exist in a bubble; the
implication is that technological development in the Kelvin timeline was more
rapid because Starfleet was more concerned about interstellar war and less
concerned with exploration (see:USS Vengeance). I get that trying to replicate
the TOS look isn’t practical, but if Discovery takes place in the prime
timeline, then visually there should be a straight line from Enterprise through
Discovery to TOS (or at least come common visual cues). Although I did
appreciate the liberal use of TOS SFX.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: CIN-GB delaying Discovery

2017-09-25 Thread PGage
I have only seen the first episode of Orville, but I did not hate it. I saw
both episodes of STD last night, and saw some things I really liked, but it
was not love at first sight. I am not that bothered by the visual look, but
I was not impressed with the dialogue. But the, I recall how much I did not
like the first two episodes of TNG, so I am more than willing to give it
some time.

The CBS Access subscription is a disaster. I was surprised at the limited
archive of many of the current shows; I have never seen Big Bang Theorey,
and thought maybe I would take this opportunity to go back and watch from
the begining. But only a relative handful are available. Some shows do have
a deep archive (Surivor). There is an odd selection of older shows
(Twiglight Zone, Mission Impossible, Cheers, for example) and some pretty
good theatrical films (but relatively small selection). The main problem
there is most of what is available on the Access is already available on
other platforms. I would like to see a list of uniquely available content -
it may not be much more than STD and that Good Wife follow-up. Give that my
three adult children also want to watch STD (each in different locations
from me), the fee for Access is justifiable for me for now, but as soon as
the season is over I will cancel it.
