[U2] Cutover!
Everyone, The lists are migrated to the new servers. As head of the (now defunct) Transition Team, I'd like to thank everyone who helped make this possible, particularly the amazing Clif Oliver and ever patient Larry Hiscock. The team, backed by the U2UG board, has done a great job of making everything as smooth as possible. What could have been a task of Titanic proportions was instead made into an example of smooth sailing. I'd also like to thank everyone who is staying with the new lists. We are nothing without a community to serve. If you are experiencing any problems, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] This mail will reach Charles Barouch, Larry Hiscock, David Jordan, and Anthony Wol Youngman. -- Charles Barouch, Moderator --- u2-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.u2ug.org/listinfo/u2-users
RE: [U2] Cutover!
Along with adding my three cheers for the PassTheBaton transition team for the u2-users list, I'd like to point out that Results, uh, Charles, uh, Chuck 'the volunteer' Barouch did a great job of facilitating this effort. Having seen many of the various project team e-mails fly past, I know that Clif, Larry, Kevin, Lee and others all jumped in as needed to make this happen, with Chuck as the very competent project leader. Best wishes to this new team of 4 moderators -- you guys have big shoes to fill (because, as I understand it, there was some other guy who did a great job as the moderator role for many years -- whatever happened to him?). Cheers! --dawn P.S. Thankfully, Clif Oliver is still on the U2UG Board so we know where to find him. Dawn M. RE: [U2] Test - please ignore
No, it's silent stripping. Performance art and all that, don'tcha know? A mime stripper (silent stripper) does have an excellent possibility of winning the #30,000 Turner Award first prize. The last winner I recall contributed to the culture vultures of this planet an empty room, the lights of which went on and off on a 30-second cycle. A plaque in front of the room read, The lights go on; the lights go off. I always felt that the electrician who rewired the lights should have won the award. The same artiste earlier in his career would sign his name to a piece of tablet paper which he would crunch into a ball and then give to friends and acquaintances as gifts. Today an unfolded tablet paper with autograph sells for about #1,500 at art auctions, while one that has allegedly never been unfolded brings #3,000. How one verifies the work of art I have no idea. I thought how wonderful it would be to have The lights go on; the lights go off at a gallery display of other modern objects d'art, such as: *Works of the Japanese artist who spilled paints of different colors all around his canvas and then rode his bicycle through individual pools and onto his masterpiece, *Works of a different Japanese artist who dipped his pigtail into cans of paint of differing colors and then swirled it onto his canvas, *A framed portrait of - nothing. The entire canvas was covered with whiteout and nothing else, and *Six identical urinals attached in a row to a green wall. Unfortunately for the gallery, several of New York City's most famous chic art experts mistook the objects d'art for fully functional urinals. They were not. No, we're not gonna try the old switch and hope he doesn't realize it's not the same one. Smart move, George. If your son hasn't faced death before, this might be a good opportunity to gently introduce him to the concept. At college I'd talk with the farm kids and realize what an advantage over us urban kids they had as they developed. They saw the cycle of existence right away - birth, life, death - and they didn't fear it. Plus as teenagers they always had Ol' Bessie to sneak behind. ;-) Our son's hamster died this AM. He doesn't know yet. Well, somebody had better tell him that he's dead before he eats too many peanuts and makes a mess somewhere. Where I once worked we had a sign, copies of which hung in every cubicle, which went like this: Remember that it is a violation of Company policy for an employee not to fall over when dead. Failure to comply by remaining upright at one's desk means that Management cannot differentiate between employees and corpses. There have been several instances recently of failure to comply, leading the Company to continue Direct Deposit paychecks well after death. Appropriate disciplinary action was taken once it became apparent to Management that a dead employee had violated this Policy by failing to topple over. Furthermore, Microsoft has tightened their default security and this tends to take precedence of how permissions were set prior to the upgrade. Administrators experiencing such an issue will need to grant the proper permissions to the required directories and files before turning their systems over to users. [U2] Telnet session terminating
Hi Everyone, I haven't posted in a while, but read all the time. I've recently been getting the error listed below in my event viewer after an SBClient session drops from my Universe server. I know there have been a few posts on similar issues, but no final solutions as of yet. UniVerse error: Unhandled Exception raised at address 0x100E8520 : Access violation. Attempted to write to address 0x01DB. Binary data is processor CONTEXT structure. I am running Universe 10.0.4 on W2K SP3, SB+ 5.2.4, SBClient 5.2.4. The problem seems to be much more prevalent on my Win XP based clients. Win 98 does not seem to have nearly the same volume of disconnects. It also seems to happen more when working from the SB TCL. Even simply escaping from TCL back to SB+ can terminate the session. The Universe session remains locked and requires it to be manually killed or it eats up all of the UV licenses. No changes were made in the past few months, but the issue seems to be getting worst. IBM has been working on it, but has not given any viable solutions. Just wondering if anyone has new info that could be useful for me. RE: [U2] How to corrupt UniVerse file(s) for Transaction Logging and DR te sting.
Hi Simon, Use filepeek or similar to modify a files pointer. eg. Change a backward or forward link to point to junk. Copy the file at the unix level and you will be able to recreate as you require. Hi Everyone, I have a need to be able to corrupt a UniVerse file and to be able to repeat the process. This is required for the testing and demonstration of Transaction Logging to management. The next step will include the testing of various methods of replicating UniVerse databases and DR logs to a remote DR server, crashing UniVerse and breaking database(s) and being able to fail over to the DR site and recover the UniVerse databases on the DR site. The testing servers and UniVerse are fully available to me to do anything to them (within reason). Can anyone please suggest how best to set up file(s) that I can break as required? Anything special that needs to be done with keys, key length, record size, file type, etc? Thanks for your help. RE: [U2] How to corrupt UniVerse file(s) for Transaction Logging and DR te sting.
Anything wrong with having a process that does an INPUT mid way through a transaction, and then KILLing it ? Or just turning the power off to the machine ? Then again, you could kill UV and then fire up a hex editor on the files - or maybe delete a file or 2. I'd like to think that you couldn't go repeatedly corrupt the environment from a program (hmmm, wonder what impact a 64K key would have ?) Rather than actually killing the live machine, for DR I would have thought that bringing up the DR server with appropriate logs etc would have been good enough Ross Ferris Stamina Software Visage an Evolution in Software Development -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:owner-u2- [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Simon Bole-Brown Sent: Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:25 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: [U2] How to corrupt UniVerse file(s) for Transaction Logging and DR te sting. This happen quite frequently . Btw, from the uvconfig file the setting is below. Is there anyway that i can get to know the total cache size which is run the process so that i can check if is exceed the below setting ? # JOINBUF - Specifies the size of the cache used by # the optimizer for JOINs with explicit ids or indexes. # The default setting is 4095, maximum is 32363. JOINBUF 4095 # TXMEM - This is the amount of memory allocated # for the private transaction cache. It is # specified in 1K units (1024 bytes).
