RE: [U2] UniData and multi-core chips.

2005-10-25 Thread David Wolverton
For Windows the processes float? Interesting!! I was just reporting what
we were told eons ago -- that Processes were bound to a CPU on on startup on
a Windows MultiProcessor... If that's not the case, even better ...
Information in this area is hard to come by -- any authoritative information
is welcome!! Where can we find more information on this?

"When you start up, in the case of a dual/quad-processor, my understanding
is that process is 'bound' to whatever CPU the OS kicked it off on... So, in
theory, you do get some advantage of multiple processors, but the load is
not dynamically balanced based on usage.

This is NOT how it works. The OS is able to start a process on a particular
CPU and then can move the process on to other CPU's as it sees fit, to
manage the load. E.g. does dynamically balance based on usage. There are OS
commands to "bind" processes to CPUs, but these should not normally
required, you are best to leave it up to the OS!

RE: [U2] U2 SQL cache

2005-10-25 Thread Allen E. Elwood
Interesting thought...

I have my own TCL manager which is full screen editor/tcl manager and saves
the commands to a file with the Logon*Account as the ID. That could be
considered "caching" inquiry requests. The .L at tcl is caching inquiry
requests, and you can save them to file (with a few keystrokes). So
therefore, you should be able to answer yes thereby satiating PHB demands
for a plethora of optionitis as a requirement for purchase.

p.s., I love my TCL manager as I can play with statements till I get them
working and then paste into a proc, or visa versa take from proc, play with
it till additions are made, and paste it back. And three years later when
someone wants me to recreate that "one time only" request, I do a search for
filename or dict name till I find the statement - hit return and bingo,
three year old request resurrected from the dead!

Caching *is* good!

Re: [U2] File index problem on Unidata

2005-10-25 Thread Manuel Owens

Kevin,

When we completed our migration from True64 to AIX we had the same
problem. I had to delete all of the indexes and then rebuild them.
First check to be sure that the index file is present where the VOC
indicates it should be. If the file is there try deleting it at the
system level first. Then you can copy another X_index file to its
location. Use DELETE.INDEX on the new file and then you can use
CREATE.INDEX and BUILD.INDEX to index the file.

say "Index: open index file /path/X_filename error (2) Open file

Barry,

Just a quick glance at your email and two things come to mind. 1) the third
parameter in the submitRequest is the data being sent, you are sending a
null value. May or may not be correct, just wondering. 2) Your timeout is
not very long. You may be timing out before a response gets back to you.

Another helpful thing to do is to turn on protocol logging. It can give you
lots of helpful information for debugging these types of issues.

RE: [U2] Running Totals Universe

2005-10-25 Thread Tom Dodds
If you set up an I-Type that calls a subroutine with a named common where
you keep adding the field you want the running total on into the named
common variable and use the named common value as your answer it will give
you a running total.

0001: I
0002: SUBR("RUNBABY",ANS)
...

0001: SUBROUTINE RUNBABY(RUNNING.TOTAL)
0002: COM /RUNRUN/ RUNNING.TOTAL
0003: RUNNING.TOTAL += @RECORD
0004: END

I haven't done this for a while, but I think that is the syntax.
The problem with this is that you have to create another routine to clearout
the named common if you want to run the list more than once during a
session. I used to do mine in a Paragraph and have the clear out routine as
a part of the Paragraph just before the list statement.

Re: [U2] File index problem on Unidata

2005-10-25 Thread Doug Miller
In the past when we had problems like this, we would create a small
index on a file somewhere else. We would then copy the X_file to the
appropriate name and location of the broken one. (There by
substituting it temporarily)

At that point you can do your DELETE.INDEX file ALL

We (S7) always recommend that indexes be completely rebuilt from
scratch when migrating to new platforms.

Re: [U2] Running Totals Universe

2005-10-25 Thread Ray Wurlod
Running totals happen automatically at breakpoints on any field for which the
field modifier TOTAL is specified.

So one technique would be to BREAK.ON @ID DET.SUP

You can also create EVAL expressions or I-descriptor expressions that keep a
running total and display same. Here you can make use of the fact that the
intermediate result variables (@1 through @20 and @ alone) are automatically
initialized to zero. EVAL "@2; @1 + FIELDNAME"

Nested EVAL is not supported. However, nested IF is supported, at least to a
certain level of complexity.

LIST CS.2005 TOTAL EVAL "IF (H.CS.NEXT.CLASS = 'Y') THEN IF(H.HCG.AWARDED.ALL >
0) THEN 1 ELSE 0 ELSE 0"

Or, even easier, since 1 is "true" and 0 is "false":

LIST CS.2005 TOTAL EVAL "(H.CS.NEXT.CLASS = 'Y') AND (H.HCG.AWARDED.ALL > 0)"

[U2] File index problem on Unidata

2005-10-25 Thread Kevin Yoders

Hello all,

I have a client that migrated from True64 to AIX a few weeks ago (I
wasn't involved with the migration). They are currently having a
problem with an index corruption on a static file. Unidata will not
allow me to do a LIST, LIST.INDEX, DELETE.INDEX, or anything else
I've tried on the file, giving me the error "Index: /path/X_filename
has damaged index entries Open file error." I tried renaming the
X_filename index file and repeating the above. The error messages
now say "Index: open index file /path/X_filename error (2) Open file
error." Lots of help. I've tried running guide_ndx on it, and it
simply tells me it has errors. Lots more help.

Unidata version is 6.1.11 on AIX (uname says AIX 570 3 5 ). Any
suggestions on how to get rid of the index or retrieving the data
from the file to build a new file/index would be greatly appreciated.

Be carefull how you explain that to the "unwashed masses". I can just
see the typical PHB exclaiming that UV/UD does not have this feature,
therefore it must be inferior!

RE: [U2] NESTING EVAL

2005-10-25 Thread rbl000
You don't nest EVAL's, you nest IF's. I would rewrite your expression for
clarity this way:

LIST CS.2005 TOTAL EVAL "IF (H.CS.NEXT.CLASS NE Y) THEN 0 ELSE
IF(H.HCG.AWARDED.ALL > 0) THEN 1 ELSE 0"

Or perhaps:

LIST CS.2005 TOTAL EVAL "IF (H.CS.NEXT.CLASS = Y) * (H.HCG.AWARDED.ALL > 0)
THEN 1 ELSE 0"

[U2] Running Totals Universe

2005-10-25 Thread Anthony Dzikiewicz
Is there a way to display a running total in Universe within LIST
RECORD... ?

I am looking thru the docs and I came across TRANSPORT. At first, it
looked like the "ticket". After giving it a try, I have come to the
conclusion that it is not. Then I started to wonder what TRANSPORT
would ever be used for ?

If anyone knows any tricks, please tell. In the meantime, I am doing a
quick program to do what I need.

Thanks

Smashing! Thank you.
I had a feeling that because I was having such a hard time finding the
answer to this question, it was irrelevant to UniData.

RE: [U2] Creating Multiple page RTF documents

2005-10-25 Thread Maresh, Mel
I did something similar a few years and just created the source documents in
Word with embedded tokens to be replaced dynamically by information from the
database. The documents were then saved in .rtf format. Thus page soft breaks
were handled by Word and, as I recall, Word would automatically adjust the page
length if the inserted information made the page longer or shorter. Hard page
breaks were inserted as necessary for the end of sections, etc.

A technique that I found useful was to edit the documents in Notepad to reveals
the embedded codes.

For example, the following code shows the document before and after a new page.
A is on page 1 and B is on page 2. There is no hard page break.

\par A
\par B
\par

This code shows a inserted hard page break

\par A
\par \page
\par B

I hope this helps, please feel free to contract me offline if you have any
other questions that you think I might be of help with.

Subject: [U2] Creating Multiple page RTF documents

Hi. I am in the process of creating RTF documents in Universe and am stuck
on how to create a multiple page document.

Currently I have a RTF template which was created in Word with tokens
which I replace in databasic with the appropriate data. Also, the rtf
document contains headers and footers (and the data in the header changes
from one page to the next page)

can anyone point me in the right direction on how to do this or if its
possible?

RE: [U2] UniData and multi-core chips.

2005-10-25 Thread James.E.Hogan
"When you start up, in the case of a dual/quad-processor, my
understanding is that process is 'bound' to whatever CPU the OS kicked
it off on... So, in theory, you do get some advantage of multiple
processors, but the load is not dynamically balanced based on usage.
Therefore, if all your heavy users happen to get assigned to CPU1, then
CPU2 will be vastly underutilized. But if they sign off and back on, and
the load has not changed, it's likely their new session would be bound
to CPU2, but that is the OS handling the event, not UniData."

This is NOT how it works. The OS is able to start a process on a
particular CPU and then can move the process on to other CPU's as it
sees fit, to manage the load. E.g. does dynamically balance based on
usage. There are OS commands to "bind" processes to CPUs, but these
should not normally required, you are best to leave it up to the OS!

RE: [U2] UniData and multi-core chips.

2005-10-25 Thread John Jenkins
UniData and UniVerse both work file on multi-processor systems - they let
the O/S deal with the hardware and just deal with the O/S..

A point of note - each LPAR is to all intents and purposes a separate server
- so if you have UniData installed in separate LPARs you need separate
UniData licenses.

Hi all,
We are about to go to RFP for a new box. How does this change the
dynamics if you use/"or are looking at" IBM's LPARS or virtual server
technology?

Umm ... this is a catch 22 question. Is the questioner a PHB ticking boxes, or
someone who really wants to know?
>
> I've not been able to find the answer on IBM's website. Can anyone tell

The correct answer is "what's the point?". I'll explain.

Query caching is an optimisation technique that is intended to overcome the
inherent limitations of a First Normal Form (relational) database engine. UD is
not FNF, therefore does not suffer this limitation, therefore does not need
(actually, cannot implement) this form of optimisation.

To give my favourite example ... the invoice. A relational engine will scatter
the data for one invoice across multiple rows in multiple tables. A query cache
optimises and memorises how the query was executed, in order to speed it up
next time. UD will simply store the entire invoice in one record, and you can't
speed up a "got everything first attempt" query.

The point is, relational THEORY is hopelessly inefficient. MV PRACTICE is very
efficient. So any relational optimisation is a waste of time in the MV world.

Cheers,
Wol
