Re: [U2] UV - Distributed files

2006-05-18 Thread asvin . dattani
Hi Jerry,

Actually, I know about multi-data files too... I used to use them on Pick
R83, to simulate what Universe later implemented much more cleanly as
distributed files.

Part numbers dont have to be sequential and dont have to start at 1 ( I
didnt know that until I was told quite recently...), but cannot be zero.
You could if you wanted to use the whole year as a part number if you
wished, so you could have part numbers 2000, 2001, 2002 etc.

However, how often are you going to be select just the year 2000 data? It
would probably make sense to have a part file for each of the more recent
years, and put the rest in a bucket. That way you retain all the
advantages of using a distributed file, but minimise the disadvantages

cheers,

asvin

Since you seem to know a little about distributed (as opposed to

I've recently gotten into distributed files and was wondering how others
treat year 0 records. Can there be a part number 0?

RE: [U2] Client interested in using Dynamic Connect with application software written with SBPlus

2006-05-18 Thread Kevin King
I have no experience with Dynamic Connect, but I have setup a variety
of terminal emulators to work with SB+. The first thing is to
configure the page 1 stuff properly, terminal type, width, and depth
first. Then the next big thing is to figure out what F3 is sending
and get that key mapped. Once that key has been mapped it can be used
to map the rest of the keys. Then double back and worry about the
graphic characters, text effexts, color, and any other periphery that
may need to be addressed.

Granted, this is an overly simplified approach and there are always
derivatives and issues to work around, but this is the general
procedure that has worked best for me personally.

Folks,

OK, before anyone asks if I am insane, my first response to the client
was in the negative because SB Plus and SBClient are a team - even
having different versions can cause odd behaviors, especially in
things like downloads and email. But the client is both persistent
(Dynamic Connect is, after all,
free!) and not good at giving details, and she wants a recommendation
on terminal emulation because she is having trouble with determining a
good setting. I told her vt220 was probably her best bet, since that
is what we use in SBClient. However, I am asking here in case someone
else has already been down this road, and can give me some guidance on
what issues she is likely to encounter. (And yes, I know there is an
sbsolutions list, but this list seems more likely to know Dynamic
Connect...)

Eagerly awaiting your ingenious workarounds and 'war stories'...

Thanks in advance!

Re: [U2] [UV] Active Directory, RHEL 4 integration and issues with UV

2006-05-18 Thread John Hester

phil walker wrote:

Has anyone configured their RHEL 4.0 system to authenticate against

maintaining both Linux and Windows security.

If so, what issues did you have with regarding to:

a) telnet or ssh connectivity
b) samba connectivity
c) UniObjects connectivity
d) NFS or anything else...

We are running RHEL 3.0 and using AD authentication for ssh, telnet,
ftp, and samba. I set this up when we migrated UV from IRIX to RH in
Nov. '04, and it's been working flawlessly. It's made password
administration a non-issue. The only major caveat is that should the
winbind daemon ever die or hang, users can't log in. This doesn't
happen very often, but does happen occasionally. I'm running the
following script from cron every minute to eliminate the problem:

#!/bin/sh
#
# JAH - restart winbind if it dies
# 07-15-04
#
THISHOST=`hostname`
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
WB_STATUS=`/etc/init.d/winbind status | grep running`
if [ $WB_STATUS = ]; then
/etc/init.d/winbind restart
(
echo winbindd hung and was restarted on server $THISHOST:
echo $WB_STATUS
) | mail -s $THISHOST: winbindd restart $SYSADMIN
fi

Also, keep in mind that linux/UV is case sensitive, where Windows/AD is
not. If you are doing anything in UV based on login name you may have
problems if your Windows user logins aren't created with the case
convention you expect. We have always used uppercase only for the UV
server logins and have to be very careful to always use uppercase when
we add a new user to AD. Users can still log into the UV server using
lower case for their login name, but once they're in, winbind reports
their logins to the OS with the case in which they were originally
created. If a user is mistakenly set up using the wrong case, you can
still correct the problem by deleting them from AD and recreating them
correctly.

The only other caveat I can think of is that you need to be very careful
during the initial setup to make sure you don't lock yourself out of
your server. If you're going to be setting up both telnet and ssh, get
one working and tested first, then set up the other.

I'm not using winbind for UOJ authentication because we always use the
same OS level login for UOJ, then authenticate the user supplied name
and password in a BP via arguments. I don't think I could do UOJ
authentication via AD though, because I'm relying on PAM, which UOJ
doesn't use. AFAIK you can do samba/winbind/AD integration without
using PAM, but I haven't explored this.

I have the entire setup process documented and would be happy to send it
to you off-list.

Re: [U2] Client interested in using Dynamic Connect

2006-05-18 Thread Susan Lynch
Bill, the problem is that everything we do is very SB-dependent. It is not
just the screens. We download accounting files to the client PC using the
SB file transfer subroutine calls, we email invoices using the SB calls to
the TU.MAPI logic, etc. However, your point about the correct emulation
mode is interesting. The client now tells me that the only thing (that she
has tested) that is not working for her is the F5 key. I checked the
Dynamic Connect manual and the Function keys in general mapped exactly to
the SB key definitions. The F5 key appears to be the one key that was not
mapped, according to the documentation - I will send her directions for
mapping that key the way that SB Client has it mapped and see if she can use
Dynamic Connect successfully.

Thanks for the help!

We use Dynamic Connect and (for what it is) we like it a lot.

On our legacy HP-Ux 9000 E45 we use addsvp emulation.

On our new HP-Ux Itanium server, we use VT-100.

Determining the correct emulation mode is important; strange characters
appear when in the wrong mode.
There are maybe two dozen modes available in DC.

Rather than insane, I would consider the client to be fiscally prudent.

The SB source code may need to be tweaked in order to run with DC.
Consider

Re: [U2] [UV] Active Directory, RHEL 4 integration and issues with UV

Similar response to John.

We are currently on RHEL2.1 and still use the pam smb module to
validate against the AD server. This works well for simple stuff but
pamsmb is now deprecated in favour of winbind.

a) telnet or ssh connectivity

It just works. Users that don't exist on the AD controller still need
a local password in /etc/shadow.

b) samba connectivity

No problems - this has it built-in anyway which is where the original
pamsmb came from.

c) UniObjects connectivity

Unless you can do as John suggested and get winbind working without
pam you will need to maintain these users locally (assuming this works
at all).

One idea I had but never followed up was using the password chat
function in Samba. As part of the user's windows login script, their
PC would map a samba drive. Samba on the linux server would use the
samba password chat function to set their linux password to the
password sent through to samba when the drive was mapped. The login
script would then unmap the drive. This means their linux password
would be synched to the windows one whenever they logged into the pc.
Nice idea in theory but I've not tried to make it work.

Personally I think IBM claiming that UD is ported to RHEL or linux
generally and not supporting PAM is a bit suspect.

d) NFS or anything else...

The only other issue I can think of is handling different windows
domains. If a user that belongs to a different windows domain wants
to log into your linux server, the authentication service has to know
about the other domain. Pamsmb doesn't do this AFAIK, no idea about
winbind.

I am currently planning our RHEL4 upgrade and have yet to decide the
final way we would do it. I was pretty much thinking winbind would be
the answer but our Linux support people (Datacom Auckland) are
suggesting an openLDAP based approach.

[U2] Client interested in using Dynamic Connect with application software written with SBPlus

2006-05-18 Thread Susan Joslyn
This is a subject near and dear to my heart.

I have worked closely with the folks behind both Dynamic Connect and
Accuterm to create usable terminal definitions when using SB+ in Character
mode.

Neither can be used with SB+ in SB's own GUI mode, although you can do some
stuff with the GUI functionality of both programs. I don't think that makes
sense in this case as you are talking about an end-user company that I can't
imagine is interested in re-writing a lot of your front end.

Dynamic Connect comes with a couple of special features that make it more
SB+ compatible, although I've had trouble with F5 that I couldn't overcome
before, too. You can get the F5 to work by use Ctrl-F and then 5 (like in
DEFAULT TERM mode). But be sure to open the configuration page of Dynamic
Connect and click-and-hold SB_KEYS and CONTROL_KEYS. (I'm sorry I don't
remember exactly how to open that window -- someone else?)

I have customers using an adds configuration, Wyse configurations and
ansi/vt100/vt220 emulations. None are as perfect as I would like, but I
think things go better with Wyse.

Note that if you have stuff that is automatically downloading and that sort
of thing, it will absolutely fail if SBClient is not at the desktop. Unless
you want to rewrite it for DC's download stuff. HOWEVER you could put one
copy of SBClient in, for the person who would do that sort of stuff, and the
others could still use dynamic connect.

I find that there are a lot of variables in the mix -- the platform, what
env var is being exported by unix, all kinds of things that make a pat
answer impossible, but I set the DC side to an emulation that I like, take a
copy of the host side /TERM.DEFN item that I like the best and then tweak it
until it is as close as it can get.

I'm going to tell you -- this is my least favorite thing about SB. It's a
total pain and makes me look like a dork time and time again. /end vent

RE: [U2] UV - Globalization studies, relative to U2

2006-05-18 Thread Stuart . Boydell
Do you mean something like National Language Support (NLS)
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/25119180.pdf

With NLS mode enabled, you can use UniVerse in various languages and
countries. You can do the following:
- Input data in many character sets (dependent on your local keyboard)
- Retrieve data and format it using your own conventions or those of
another country
- Output data to a screen or printer using the character sets and display
conventions of different countries
- Write programs that run in different languages and countries without
source changes or recompilation

We need to provide currency translation in the near future, and
eventually content localization.

If someone has some links to read, or documents it would give us a leg
up.

RE: [U2] Client interested in using Dynamic Connect with application software written with SBPlus

2006-05-18 Thread Stuart . Boydell
I use Dynamic Connect in preference to SBClient. I have NO issues with it
using it against SB+/UV in VT220 mode.
It is less powerful than say, bNettermb (another well-loved emulator I have
used) but it is free and quite serviceable for the price!
As others have mentioned, it wonbt do SB+ downloads, smart client, tu.xxx
routines and their ilk but it does have some SB+ smarts for printing boxes
and the like.
Setup: In SB+ in the terminal definition screen (/TERM.DEFN), start by
creating a new emulation by copying one of the Wintegrate emulations
supplied with SB+. Make sure the OE Term type is vt220 and PC Terminal type
is set to 2 (aka Termite mode). This will give you a good colour emulation
right off the bat.
In the Setup /Terminal dialog of DC make sure that you have the sb and
sb_keys extensions highlighted.
Cheers.

Subject: [U2] Client interested in using Dynamic Connect with application
software written with SBPlus

Folks,

OK, before anyone asks if I am insane, my first response to the client was
in
the negative because SB Plus and SBClient are a team - even having
different
versions can cause odd behaviors, especially in things like downloads and
email. But the client is both persistent (Dynamic Connect is, after all,
free!) and not good at giving details, and she wants a recommendation on
terminal emulation because she is having trouble with determining a good
setting. I told her vt220 was probably her best bet, since that is what we
use in SBClient. However, I am asking here in case someone else has already

been down this road, and can give me some guidance on what issues she is
likely to encounter. (And yes, I know there is an sbsolutions list, but
this
list seems more likely to know Dynamic Connect...)

Eagerly awaiting your ingenious workarounds and 'war stories'...

Thanks in advance!

[U2] [UD] ON.ABORT

2006-05-18 Thread Bill Haskett
I'm running UD 7.1 on Windows 2003 and am trying to use the ON.ABORT command
to prevent user access to ECL. According to the UD Commands Reference
manual:

The ECL ON.ABORT command identifies a command that UniData executes when a
UniBasic program aborts. command may be an ECL command, a paragraph, or a
directly or globally cataloged UniBasic program. This setting remains in
effect until you clear it with the CLEAR.ONABORT command.

Reading the UD Windows Admin manual, the following note is made:
Note: You can also use the ECL ON.ABORT command to prevent users from
accessing the ECL or MS-DOS prompt. ON.ABORT defines a paragraph that
executes whenever a UniBasic program aborts. See the UniData Commands
Reference for information about ON.ABORT.

If I set ON.ABORT, in the login paragraph, to execute a BASIC main menu
program, then press [Ctrl]+C to break out of the main menu, then enter END
at the ! debug prompt, I end up at the ECL prompt. I thought the command
specified by the ON.ABORT command was supposed to execute (the main menu
program).

So, how does one keep anyone from getting to ECL by any means?

As always, thanks.

I'm sure some of you have done this. Where did you start? Did you
buy a solution, write your own?

This may not be much help but DesignBais has been used to put a web GUI
onto non-english apps, including at least one Chinese app which I believe
runs over U2. It includes a glossary feature which allows a single
application to display localized prompts, help text, etc. I don't know of
any studies or white papers done on localization but maybe DesignBais
International can hook you up with some client/developers who could share
their experience.

Content localization can mean a lot of things so be sure to define your
business strategy clearly so that you can evaluate whether specific tools
are in line with your goals.

You might have better luck finding information about globalization and
localization with regard to software development in general, identify
appropriate non-MV tools, and then work out the best connectivity
solutions. The .NET Framework and Java both have extensive localization
(internationalization (I18N)) support built in, and from there tools like
mv.NET, UO.NET, and UOJ can help to make the connection to U2 relatively
seamless.

Currency translation can be done from U2 by calling a variety of Web
Services, either directly from U2 or through one of the above mentioned
connectivity tools.

So everything that you're asking about is within reach.
