I guess free was a poor word. Already included may be better. It used to
be an extra cost option but it was later included in the base price.

That's a very good point that I never thought of, though here
we are after a
year in production and it's still at 1.x - I sort of doubt
this will be an
issue if a developer discusses this with RD up-front. A
clause for this
applies to most software that's sold.

Good to hear. When I was looking at this it was not long after everyone in
CDP was complaining about the new 50% upgrade price RD put in. We just
didn't want to have to worry about building the uncertainty of upgrade
pricing into our sales model. IBM's SMA includes all upgrades. We would
either have to build the upgrade price into our fees or pass it onto our
clients at the time of the upgrade. It's tough to tell clients that the
yearly maintenance only covers (primarily) fixes to the code they've already
bought and if they want the new version they have to pay more. Especially
when our pricing has always included new versions.

It's very difficult for anyone to compete with free (as in beer). The
free software juggernaut should compel vendors to ensure that their
commercial software is especially worthy of the fee being
asked.

I've seen lots of free software that wasn't worth the fee being asked. The
biggest problem with free is that there is very little to no control.
Sure, if you have the source you could make your own changes (if you can)
but then you have to make sure you re-incorporate them into every new
version you use. If there are multiple version of the software (see Linux)
then things can really get complicated.

  But on one
hand we have commercial vendors who don't quite get that
concept yet, or
they don't do the marketing to support their product, relying
on just saying
it's good to make sales. And on the other hand we have many
developers
who don't care or don't know about features and only pay
attention to the
price tag. I often wonder just how much these factors hold
our market back
compared to more mainstream offerings.

I think most pick developers are used to being able to do everything in
basic and since everything could be done in basic then they should be able
to do everything for themselves. We're not used to buying components.
Besides I think there are a number of reasons holding back many pick
developers.

Well, that's way too much for a Tuesday morning after a long weekend

Snip
Redback costs $4,000, which includes a $1,000 Redback server and two
webshares (connection licenses) at $1,500 each. In a non-persistent mode
the two webshares can probably handle 25 users = 5 U2 licenses + 2
Webshares). I believe each webshare takes a single U2 license. Each U2
server needs to purchase the RBO server and webshares. I could be wrong
about how many webshares are needed. All reports I've heard say webshares
work very efficiently. In addition, there is an enterprise pricing model
available for high-load sites.
/Snip

True as long as you have version 4.1.3.2 of Redback
This version fixed the bug that redback didn't consume a UV license :(

Good while it lasted.

RE: [U2] UniVerse in VB .NET

2004-05-24 Thread alfkec
Tony;

I probably asked many of the same questions. I did understand that if the
coding was done for non-persistent apps then the number of licenses (both
for pdp.net and the database) would be less.

I guess I should have qualified it more. We were looking at a new
non-persistent app that was piggy-backing on our current database
connections so we had no extra savings there. The connection - at this
stage - was light and inquiry only. We had only 2 D3 clients left - of
which one converted to UD last week and I learned Friday that the last one
wants to convert Friday.

This meant that we went with the free Uni-OLEDB interface. Which worked fine
for us. I think what worried me most was that the SMA only covered minor
product upgrades and since it was fairly new I was worried that there might
be a couple major upgrades coming up.

We never did get it in house so I can't comment on its technical merits.
However, based on its pricing I just can't see justifying it for U2 only
access.

Thanks for making me make sure this was clear,

Hi Colin - I initially thought that the cost for PDP.NET was
prohibitive as
well but then I started asking questions and I was amazed that
the cost is
MUCH less than what people think. I had to send an extra
e-mail saying are
you sure!? and to get it in writing. RD Marketing has done a
good job of
developing and promoting the software, but I think they missed
the boat when
explaining the pricing model. The pricing is actually pretty
good whether
using persistent connections, or especially for non-persistent
apps which
are permitted per recent RD marketing. A non-persistent app
can be written
with a thicker middle-tier, thicker client, and/or in
combination with web
services. The final cost is really dependent on how you code.
 One-for-one
coding as we do with green screens will probably make cost an
issue, but
then the question becomes whether end-users will pay more for
apps that are
developed using brand-names like IBM and Microsoft .NET. I think other
recent threads here have proven that people are paying
outlandish prices for
brand-name GUI apps, so is added cost at this tier really prohibitive?

RE: [U2] UniVerse in VB .NET

2004-05-21 Thread GB
We can confirm Colin's statement. We are currently developing a new web
application using ASP.NET and C#. We are accessing UniOLEDB (with UniData
6.0.12) through the COM interop capabilities of .NET from C#. We had some
minor problems with the connection, but our developers eventually got
something working. I'll see if they can provide some input. Right now they
are chained to their workstations, trying to make up a missed deadline.
grin The only other problem we had were some random E_FAIL and SQL
Rowcount errors. IBM supplied a patch that dealt with some threading
issues, which fixed the problem. The only bridge we have not crossed yet is
having multiple window services running our C# code, each having an OLEDB
connection open. The window services will get their transactions through a
set of MSMQ queues.

Thanks for the info...sorry for providing the list with misinformation. :-(

I noticed that UniObjects for .NET is under development and is due for
release sometime in mid 2004. Also, the calls to U2 from .NET use SQL not
the U2 query language or a READ-type extraction.

There's been a lot of traffic here about the difficulties of setting up
UniObjects and UniOleDB for use by .NET. I didn't really think it couldn't
be done, just not by a challenged individual such as myself. :-)

I've seen IBM presentations about their intent to link U2 to .NET and those
products are expected to be available in mid to late 2004 (the current set
of products were not sufficient). I don't believe that for an MV developer,
building an SQL layer to access and update MV data is the optimal MV
solution. The PDP.NET product seems to be in the right direction and I
assume IBMs forthcoming .NET solution(s) for U2 will be similar.

me the same error. and when i click the test connection button, it wont
work either. but the test works fine when i use the username and password.

any ideas?

Trevor
the OleDB connection property pages include two options: one for allowing
a blank
password and one for saving the password.

Neither of these work.
You need to connect using a user name that is passworded, and supply the
password
manually when you open your connection.

Hey, I am having come probs with connecting to UniVerse 10 DB with VB
.NET (VS .NET)

I I can setup the UCI.SONFIG file fine and the Test Connection works
fine. But once i
click on Ok to add it i get an error:

Unable to connect to database.
Died in UCI::SQLConnect() with SQLSTATE IM980, Native error:0 [IBM][SQL
Client]Remote
password is required.

When i click ok it comes up again. Then i click ok again it goes away.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks
Trev
