RE: On learning to swim (u2-users U2UG)

2004-03-30 Thread Graham, David
Dawn -

It seems that there is only one piece of the puzzle that is missing; the ability to
not only receive e-mail from the various forums but also to reply to that e-mail by
way of e-mail (as opposed to writing the reply from within a browser). If that one
feature were implemented I believe quite a lot of the reluctance that has appeared
in the past day or so would be obviated.

While I imagine there are a number of others that would also like to have some form of
digest feature (and I'm one of them), the deal killer for a lot of folks seems to be
the requirement to reply to a message by way of the web.

Subject: On learning to swim (u2-users U2UG)

To the u2-users community --

I have been on the road and have not read all of the e-mail related to
u2-users going away but did have an exchange with Clif after reading his
message. Just so it is perfectly clear -- the U2UG did not in any way
suggest or encourage u2-users ending -- quite the opposite. Clif had to
move the list to another server a few months ago and he asked if there was
a chance that the U2UG could take it on at that time and we all voted him
in for life, or as long as he was willing and able to continue in his
efforts with the list.

I suspect that Clif thought he might just lighten his load if he taught us
to swim by pushing us into the waters, even if we had no prior intent to
learn to swim. In any case, Clif is on the U2UG Board for the emerging
U2UG and we have a conference call scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) at
which we will discuss options. Given that we are all grateful for the
work that Clif has done, we don't want to hurt him while we twist his arm,
but we definitely do not want to lose the u2-users community. So, we will
take the input from the list (so feel free to keep writing on the subject
and give us any advice you can) and put our heads together tomorrow and
let you know shortly thereafter how we think we can address the
requirement from Clif that he be able to end his much appreciated run as
the moderator and host for the list.

I'll plan to be back in my office towards the end of this week and Clif
has indicated that he will not just pull the plug if we don't have a
smooth transition to whatever-comes-next for the u2 community by April 1.

Apologies for not having any transition plan, but that is the nature of
the throw them in the water so they will learn to swim approach that
Clif adopted (which, quite frankly, is the ONLY way anyone was going to
let him out of his work with the u2-users list, so I can understand the
strategy, but YIKES -- we will do what we can not to drown!)

Cheers. --dawn

RE: Lists are closing

2004-03-30 Thread Graham, David
Forgive me if I sound like a broken record here but it is most assuredly NOT necessary
to (as the OP puts it) go check the forums. You need only subscribe to the forum
and can then receive e-mail each time something is posted. That e-mail contains the
entire content of the posting.

The only time it is necessary to go to the forums is in that case where you wish to
reply to a posting or create a new posting of your own. Any one would hope that the
folks on the board would see that as an area that could be changed.

Well, I'm sorry the lists are closing, but I can sympathize with Clif. I'm
not a happy camper, since that means now I have one more thing to put on my
to-do list every day (go check the forums), but so it goes. Clif, thanx
for the effort you've put in over the years.

RE: The lists are closing

2004-03-29 Thread Graham, David
I have a simple-minded idea that may increase the value of the U2UG website and
prevent us from loosing the huge amount of already accumulated knowledge that resides
in this list. Would it be possible to transfer the posts to the list to the website?
I know that there may be some legal wrangling and space considerations to deal with
but I for one would hate to loose the knowledge that has been generated by this list.

Cliff,

We whose lists are about to die, salute you.

It's been a great service - you should be held up as a shining example to
moderators everywhere in promoting the best blend of discussion, humour and
debate amongst a very informative list.

More than that, you have made us all into a (not always united, but what the
hell) community. I'll miss picking through the 700+ emails when I get back
from holidays, and I'm sure my productivity will increase as a result !
but what I will mostly miss is the feeling of being part of an immediate,
entertaining and switch-on online community.

Not to be obnoxious but why not keep data in one place? How would it benefit someone
to start a question in one medium and then be referred to another? That sound
counter-intuitive to me.

1) We DO want to leave the archives at indexinfocus.
2) We DONT want to replicate the archives onto u2ug
3) We DONT want the lists to continue

Go to the web site, and enter each forum you are interested in and click on SUBSCRIBE
this will make all responses come to your email box just as they do now. You can
register, but if you dont SUBSCRIBE you wont be seeing nothing

The archives for the lists (which go back to the mid-90's) would remain

do plan real soon now to add other content.

Is there a general opinion that the email lists should continue? How can
we avoid then having two separate, disconnected places for
 information --
the list and the U2UG forums?

RE: Uniobjects

2004-03-25 Thread Graham, David
No so at all - the majority of the WinFAST installations that are out there (not
STORIS mind you but the other, non-MV ones) are primarily done in AutoGui mode.
This is a mechanism that we chose not to use because we opted for the whole hog
approach. I recommend that anyone looking for a relatively simple, inexpensive and
quick to market solution to the perennial it looks like DOS complaint. Look at
WinFAST - it's versatile (you can get a GUI in a short period of time, thus preserving
market share) and then, if you choose to, go to the event driven model.

As you know Debster, we made a reasoned business decision not to go with the AutoGui
mechanism because we felt that A) we had enough time left in the character based
application to do it right the first time and B) that the underlying business rules
needed to be broken out of the input routines anyway. Based on those two facts, the
decision to re-write was made with full knowledge of the time and expense needed.

Prior to making that decision however, several proof of concept trials were made and
the face of the product was very successfully changed to look as though it were
developed in VB (or other graphically-oriented tool).

I stand by my statement having been intimately involved with the product from the
beginning of our relationship with them. Anyone who would like further information
about this issue is free to contact me off-list for details.

Ahem -- 30 Days Dave? Admittedly it's a nice product and very easy to use but 30 days
is stretching it just a wee bit. Not impossible but it would have to be a
Chief/Cook/Bottlewasher operation, (you know how those confused powers that be that
keep changing their minds (13 times on one screen alone comes to mind), along with
end-users can slow things a tad) with a relatively simple system.

 Steve,

I recommend that you check out WinFAST (www.goWinFAST.com). We have been using
the product for 2+ years now and it's blindingly fast, as secure as your
existing application and can be implemented in less than 30 days with minimal
code changes (or you can go 'whole hog' and re-write your code into an event
 driven model).

 Subject: Uniobjects

 Hi Everyone,

We are in the process of analyzing different approaches to porting our
software to a GUI environment. We are currently looking at Uniobjects for
Java, System Builder, jBase with ObjEx, OpenInsight and Obsydian (which I
have yet to get information on). If you have any other ideas or have gone
through this process, I would like to know a few things:

 1) How is the response time with multiple windows up at the same time?

 2) How did you deal with security? We need field level security.

 3) The approach you used to convert the screens, etc.

We are using Unidata on AIX, have 40+ users and have in excess of 200
 screens.

 Any help would be appreciated.

RE: [UDT] Use of PCPERFORM and the PHANTOM command

2004-03-23 Thread Graham, David
Thanks to both Tim and Ken - I'll try these suggestions today.

To all that I confused with the mixed syntax - this project is for both Windows and
*nix systems (AIX, SCO, Linux, etc, etc) and I have to make it work reliably on any
type of platform that UDT is supported on. So I mixed the syntax (sort of)
deliberately to infer that. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

It's not an issue with PCPERFORM. Also, I'm a bit confused by the command
itself. The backslashes indicate you're in Windows, but the command
separator of a
semicolon indicates UNIX.

Try replacing your command with the following:

PCPERFORM cd \folder\folder\U2Account echo PHANTOM ProgramName |
udt

for windows or

PCPERFORM cd /folder/folder/U2Account ; echo PHANTOM ProgramName |
udt

for UNIX.

On UNIX I'd go with:
CMD=cd /folder/folder/U2Account; nohup udt PHANTOM ProgramName
CRT CMD
PCPERFORM CMD

On Windows, I'd try something like:
CMD=cd \folder\folder\U2Account start udt PHANTOM ProgramName
CRT CMD
PCPERFORM CMD

HTH,
