[ubuntu-art] Xubuntu Context

2010-12-11 Thread Thorsten Wilms
On Fri, 2010-12-10 at 00:00 +0100, Simon Steinbeiß wrote:

Hi everyone, I'm currently working on the theme for Natty (links and
some info to be found here:

First I think that it would be helpful to have some palette, even if
only for inspiration. I have worked on the palette for greybird for
  some time, I wouldn't say it's written in stone, but I don't think I'd
like to change it drastically. Up to now I've only gotten very little
specific feedback, so that would be one thing I'd appreciate. Please
be as specific as you can be, stuff like it looks dull isn't very
  helpful/constructive criticism :)

I installed Xfce, the Greybird theme and Faenza-Xfce on my Ubuntu. I had
to rename (hide) my ~/.gtkrc-2.0 to get rid of some leftovers of the
Ambience theme in the panel and widget theme.

I guess the panel might end up looking different in an Xubuntu install,
but this is far as I will go to take screenshots, now.

Using my background-context-extractor tool resulted in:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/0007_Xubuntu_Natty_Wallpaper?action=AttachFiledo=gettarget=xfce_greybird_2010-12-11_1280x1024_context_desktop.png
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/0007_Xubuntu_Natty_Wallpaper?action=AttachFiledo=gettarget=xfce_greybird_2010-12-11_1280x1024_context_desktop.png
(Opening in a browser will not show that these have transparent
background.)

The icon labels on the desktop depend on the chosen background and the
screenshot approach can't replicate this.

Remember, we want to express high performance, the kind you get by
making the most of what you have, lightweight and clever.

The Greybird theme as is seems quite appropriate to me under this
aspects. Its fairly neutral tones leave much room for the wallpaper.

You could dare to use a more energetic color for selections, also
increasing the contrast for the text of selected items.

The step from the head (title and menu-bar) to the window background
color is not nice. There should be either no visible step, or a clearly
intended difference.

The difference in contrast between focused window titles and menu text
seems odd to me. Focused vs unfocused is a bit subtle.

How about updating that for Edgy, with a glossy wheel/Ubuntu logo or something?I personally, think that xubuntu needs a splash update that brings itmore in line with the other siblings. The rotating mouse was good for
the first release but now we have to move on to the next stage.By the way, I've just uploaded a version that Joao suggested. You cantake a look at it in the usual place.

Thanks for pointing this out. I look into it.

Actually if you could backburner this and instead provide
more unpolished options, I believe it would be more
productive.

Remember, let's try to keep at 'proposing'.

Separate colour palette, backing forms, and compositional
elements into their respective categories.

It makes it easier to 'mix and match' directions.

What I like about v3 in comparison to v1 and v2 is the way it looks
as if the objects are cut out of blue and gray glass as opposed to
the much more opaque chromed blue pieces in the first two.

Transparency can be a nice quality, especially if it's rather subtle.

Thank you immensely for taking the time to document your
work jmak!

It should go without saying that the works are unfinished -- in
fact -- it is far superior to have loose mock ups during a development
phase such as this.

Let's hope we manage to stimulate some more contributions on
the Proposal side.

Brief notes:
 * Chrome look is wonderful. Mouse feels the need to
homogenize to the look perhaps? Chrome mouse tweak?
Cleave from solid black mouse? Ideas?
 * Logo version two offers subtle contrasts which help
to elevate its appearance. Very appealing.
 * Logon composition is centre punched. Perhaps work towards
a more classical distribution considering the weight
   of the rendered logon panel.
 * Is there a way to integrate the lovely chrome look with
the wallpaper in some way to create a seamless feel?

Great work jmak!

Thanks again for taking the time. If you wouldn't mind,
I am quite sure that your work would be welcome under the
Artwork section of the wiki for newcomers to examine.
Renaming the page is relatively painless, and the current
template for the artwork area shows subpages automatically.
The /Artwork/Incoming area has a good starting point if you
would like to establish an EdgyXubuntuProposals area?

Sincerely,
Troy

[ubuntu-art] Xubuntu usplash

2006-05-22 Thread Michiel Sikma
I've been talking to janimo, the Xubuntu lead dev, in #ubuntu-devel, and
he asked me to post this here: I also made a Xubuntu usplash screen in
addition to the Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Edubuntu ones, and he thought that
it was worth being voted for on the Xubuntu wiki. There was already a
proposition which was more or less final, but he feels that the art team
should decide which one should be used. The Xubuntu-devel mailing list
will also be notified of this.

The wikipage can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperXubuntuUsplash

Please vote for one of the splash screens so that it can finally be
packaged and finalized. These are the last few bits and things that
still need to be done. I hope you're all as excited about this launch as
I am...

Greets, Michiel

Hold it one second or more, that first one looks in similar design to my
Ubuntu Tangerine style. Did mine win?!?!

  If it did
  insert wahoo reaction here

Er, what do you mean? I'm not sure, since the voting hasn't ended yet
(it will in about 9 and a half hours). :P

That first one on the wikipage was made a long time before, I believe.

Where is the voting taking place? I can't seem to find it on launchpad.

God bless,
Lukas
