[Bug 51432] Re: cupsys prints empty pages
The CUPS people say that the generated PostScript file does by no means conform to the DSC and that it's pure luck that any of the pstops filters successfully prints the PS-code. Smith who I informed (and thanked for his software!!) suggest to fix fig2dev myself in that way that it produces only %!PS instead of %!PS-Adobe-2.0. [Bug 52350] Re: [Bug 52350] Re: nsswitch.conf + ldap brakes cupsys printing
On Thu, 13 Jul 2006 09:15:25 - Mozg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: After your suggestion, i've found out that the default install, for some reason did not add cupsys to the shadow group. Perhaps install scripts should sort that out, or did I miss something during the installation? Exactly. cups user by default isn't part of shadow group. If you need to read shadow, pam or ldap, you have to add it to shadow group. It's that or runing it completly as root. Adding cupsys to the shadow group fixes the printing issues, however, it introduces a security risk to the system. We all know that cupsys has a long history of vulnerabilities. Adding cupsys user to the shadow group could compromise the authentication information of the server, if one of the vulnerabilities is obused and local access to the server is obtained. From the security perspective, this, in turn, makes the option of running the service as unpriveleged user pointless. But I guess the cupsys developers and the debian/ubuntu team know what they are doing. If you add cupsys to shadow group, cupsys will be able to authenticate user trough pam. If it isn't in shadow group, which is default, cupsys user doesn't have any privileges. OTOH, if CUPS is runing under root privileges (default by upstream), exploiting CUPS would be much worse than exploiting Ubuntu's CUPS (attacker would have total, root, control over computer). So, runining as unprivileged user isn't that pointless, but then again it isn't bulletproof (*if* you add cupsys to shadow). This is how CUPS works now. Only way out of this situation (IMHO) is rewriting CUPS in modular design (like postfix does it), but I'm the wrong person to do that :) We even can't secure it more in Ubuntu since current situation allready introduces some functionality problems. [Bug 52867] PPD Download broken for printers found via browsing
Public bug reported: Hi When browsing is enabled in cups, then the local cupsd reexports the printers found on the network. But not all requests to a printer are proxied by the local cupsd - the download of ppd files is an exception. libgnomecups, however, tries to download the ppd file from the local cupsd, which fails, and then assumes that there is no ppd file, therefore presenting no options for the printer. I patches libgnomecups by adding _gnome_cups_printer_get_ppd_host to gnome-cups-printer.c, and using that (instead of _gnome_cups_printer_get_host) in gnome_cups_printer_get_ppd. _gnome_cups_printer_get_ppd_host look similar to _gnome_cups_printer_get_host but doesn't check go_directly_to_printer_when_possible - instead, it always parses the hostname out of the printer_uri. Since printer_uri is actually printer- supported-uri - which is used for the same purpose by original cups client library - my fix should make the behaviour of libgnomecups and libcupsys more similar. ** Affects: libgnomecups (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- PPD Download broken for printers found via browsing https://launchpad.net/bugs/52867 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 52867] Re: PPD Download broken for printers found via browsing
Arg. After posting this I found the other bugreport for this problem. But since my report included a way to fix it, I marked the other one as a duplicate of mine, altough he was first. So, #50916 is now marked as a duplicate for this report. ** Bug 50916 has been marked a duplicate of this bug -- PPD Download broken for printers found via browsing https://launchpad.net/bugs/52867 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
