[Bug 50740] Re: Missing file while generating initramfs

2006-07-13 Thread Chris Moore
I see the same error in the current edgy udev:

Setting up udev (093-0ubuntu2) ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-3-686
cpio: ./lib/udev/path_id: No such file or directory

The problem is that /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/udev (from the udev
package) does this:

copy_exec /lib/udev/path_id /lib/udev

but the udev package no longer contains /lib/udev/path_id

I don't know whether that line needs removing from the script, or
whether the path_id file needs adding to the package. I worked around
the error message by doing:

sudo touch /lib/udev/path_id (but didn't try booting since, so I don't
know if it worked)

[Bug 37690] Re: update-initramfs: option to override BOOTDIR?

2006-07-13 Thread Colin Watson
Fixed in Debian 0.69, which we just merged:

initramfs-tools (0.69) unstable; urgency=low

  * scripts/local-premount/suspend, scripts/local-premount/resume: Rename
to the later as the script resumes from resume arg.

  * init: Parse for noresume and only export resume if it is not set.
Allows boot scripts to check for it's eventual existence.
Thanks David Härdeman [EMAIL PROTECTED] for the suggestion.

  * update-initramfs: Add option -b directory to override BOOTDIR.
Allows the initramfs to be created in another dir without awkward
mkinitramfs invocation. Check that the passed arg is really a dir.
(ubuntu: 37690) Thanks Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

  * update-initramfs.8: Document -b switch.

[Bug 51432] Re: cupsys prints empty pages

2006-07-13 Thread Andreas Sindermann
The CUPS people say that the generated PostScript file does by no means conform
to the DSC and that it's pure luck that any of the
pstops filters successfully prints the PS-code. They reject support
for DSC non-conforming files and suggest xfig to be fixed. The xfig
author Brian V. Smith who I informed (and thanked for his software!!)
suggest to fix fig2dev myself in that way that it produces only
%!PS instead of %!PS-Adobe-2.0. But as the CUPS people say
that it's more or less luck that one of the pstops filters successfully
prints the PS code it might be a better idea to create correct DSC
conforming code. (of which I don't have any clue, of course, that I'd
be able to offer a fix... ;-(

Xv crash with infinite GDM respan is still happening to me on nx6110,
but it is not deterministic - the crash happens sometimes, but not
always. However, when the crash happens it always happlens on start of

I agree. I've seen users misclicking quite often. They then ask me why
the computer wants to shutdown when they just want to close a window.

I'm not sure where it should go but it needs to be somewhere that an
intentional click is almost assured.

[Bug 9208] Re: Samba upgrade failure due to broken rc.d symlinks

2006-07-13 Thread JJ
I had an almost idendical problem on 6.06 LTS, but the broken links were

/etc/rc2.d/S91samba - /samba
/etc/rc3.d/S91samba - /samba

Obviously, there's no 'samba' in the root folder, so I just deleted
these dud links, ran apt-get upgrade -f and it seemed to resolve
itself.

Maybe one of the recent packages was dodgy.

suspend to begin, but after backlight is switched off, the fan comes on
full blast and nothing more happens. Suspend is not successful in any
case.

Reverting to kernel 2.6.15-21 works for me, I haven't tried any more
recent versions.

I can confirm that 2.6.15-26 does not work for me.

Hi Sebastien,
I think it is a bug because if I run Naultilus using 'sudo' it doesn't
do it. A directory above the deleted directory gets selected
(highlighted). So it means that it behaves differently between user and
sudo. This can't be correct can it?

[Bug 24864] Re: Samba mount point becomes inaccessible after hibernation/suspend

2006-07-13 Thread Jörg Höhle
An alternative approach to /etc/init.d is using ACPI. Add a file like
/etc/acpi/suspend.d/30-smbfs-umount.sh
pre
# Unmount SAMBA shares - open files on these don't survive suspending.
umount -a -l -t smbfs
/pre
-- inspired from
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=6984view=next

BTW, acpi calls 65-STOP_SERVICES (for init.d services) after 55-down-
interfaces.sh -- maybe not so nice w.r.t. the server TCP connection.

I can't comment whether there's anything better to do than umount.

I don't understand why umount is necessary at all -- why can't enough
state be preserved for things like ls -al /mnt/samba/foo, df or pwd? I
mean, I might not even have open files from Samba (but directories).

Bug affects at least Breezy and Dapper.

[Bug 52866] SOAP response for associative array is different on ubuntu 6.06

2006-07-13 Thread Mike
Public bug reported:

From http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=37790
This is really annoying and prevents us from developing Webservices with Ubuntu
6.06 LTS!

Description:

When upgrading to Kubuntu or Ubuntu 6.06 (or even previous
Dapper Dragon pre-releases), SOAP extension in PHP 5.1.4 stops
functioning the way it used to regarding the XML responses.
Associative arrays no longer return a XML response that
specifies type.

Reproduce code:
---
class MyService {
function getLists() {
   $out = array(
  array(
 'id' = 12,
 'name' = 'My New List'
  )
);
   return $out;
}
}
In a client page:
$result = $client-getLists();
$result will be stdClass stuff on 'broken' setup, with dapper.

Expected result:

Snippet of XML response from a $client-getLists() call:

SOAP-ENV:Body
ns1:getListsResponse
getListsReturn SOAP-ENC:arrayType=ns2:Map[1]
xsi:type=SOAP-ENC:Array
item xsi:type=ns2:Map
item
key
xsi:type=xsd:stringid/key
value
xsi:type=xsd:string12/
value
/item
item
key
xsi:type=xsd:stringname/
key
value xsi:type=xsd:stringMy
New
List/value
/item
/item
/getListsReturn
/ns1:getListsResponse
/SOAP-ENV:Body
Result variable should be:
Array
(
[0] = Array
(
[id] = 12
[name] = My New List
)

)

Actual result:
--
Actual result, missing type attributes:
SOAP-ENV:Body
ns1:getListsResponse
getListsReturn
item
item
keyid/key
value12/value
/item
item
keyname/key
valueMy New List/value
/item
/item
/getListsReturn
/ns1:getListsResponse
/SOAP-ENV:Body
Actual $result variable on dapper:
stdClass Object
(
[item] = stdClass Object
(
[item] = Array
(
[0] = stdClass Object
(
[key] = id
[value] = 20
)

[1] = stdClass Object
(
[key] = name
[value] = Test Site List
)

)

)

)

[Bug 52350] Re: [Bug 52350] Re: nsswitch.conf + ldap brakes cupsys printing

2006-07-13 Thread Ante Karamatić

Mozg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 After your suggestion, i've found out that the default install, for
 some reason did not add cupsys to the shadow group. Perhaps install
 scripts should sort that out, or did I miss something during the
 installation?

Exactly. cups user by default isn't part of shadow group. If you need
to read shadow, pam or ldap, you have to add it to shadow group. It's
that or runing it completly as root.

 Adding cupsys to the shadow group fixes the printing issues, however,
 it introduces a security risk to the system. We all know that cupsys
 has a long history of vulnerabilities. Adding cupsys user to the
 shadow group could compromise the authentication information of the
 server, if one of the vulnerabilities is obused and local access to
 the server is obtained. From the security perspective, this, in turn,
 makes the option of running the service as unpriveleged user
 pointless. But I guess the cupsys developers and the debian/ubuntu
 team know what they are doing.

If you add cupsys to shadow group, cupsys will be able to authenticate
user trough pam. If it isn't in shadow group, which is default, cupsys
user doesn't have any privileges. OTOH, if CUPS is runing under root
privileges (default by upstream), exploiting CUPS would be much worse
than exploiting Ubuntu's CUPS (attacker would have total, root,
control over computer). So, runining as unprivileged user isn't that
pointless, but then again it isn't bulletproof (*if* you add cupsys to
shadow).

This is how CUPS works now. Only way out of this situation (IMHO) is
rewriting CUPS in modular design (like postfix does it), but I'm the
wrong person to do that :)

We even can't secure it more in Ubuntu since current situation allready
introduces some functionality problems.

So, OK to reject this bug as misconfigured?

[Bug 52867] PPD Download broken for printers found via browsing

2006-07-13 Thread Florian Pflug
Public bug reported:

Hi

When browsing is enabled in cups, then the local cupsd reexports the
printers found on the network. But not all requests to a printer are
proxied by the local cupsd - the download of ppd files is an exception.

libgnomecups, however, tries to download the ppd file from the local
cupsd, which fails, and then assumes that there is no ppd file,
therefore presenting no options for the printer.

I patches libgnomecups by adding _gnome_cups_printer_get_ppd_host to
gnome-cups-printer.c, and using that (instead of
_gnome_cups_printer_get_host) in gnome_cups_printer_get_ppd.

_gnome_cups_printer_get_ppd_host look similar to
_gnome_cups_printer_get_host but doesn't check
go_directly_to_printer_when_possible - instead, it always parses the
hostname out of the printer_uri. Since printer_uri is actually printer-
supported-uri - which is used for the same purpose by original cups
client library - my fix should make the behaviour of libgnomecups and
libcupsys more similar.
