[Bug 52937] Waiting for root file system... ...not found after kernel upgrade
Public bug reported: I was running dapper on generic Clevo 2200 1GHz laptop and following a kernel upgrade to linux-image-2.6.15-25-686 the machine would do the oft-reported hang at Waiting for root file system... followed by dropping to BusyBox shell after a few minutes having not found it. At this stage, all the modules for my IDE (sis5513) seem to be there and /dev/hda1 had appeared. I was able to mount /dev/hda1 (ext3) and chroot to it -- the file system looked fine. Having foolishly removed my older kernels I managed to reinstall a few older versions of 2.6.15 by booting to knoppix chrooting to /dev/hda1 and using aptitude. None of the older kernels would find the root file system either. I got a lot of help on IRC (thanks Matthew G!) but I'm giving up on it - I've got to get a replacement machine set up in time for LRL'06. [Bug 44874] Re: auto smbfs mount in /etc/fstab causes hald hang at boot
To me this solution partially helped: sudo apt-get remove --purge hal dbus I really don't need neither hal, nor dbus. But I need the samba shares to be automatically mounted at boot time. It *partially* works means that sometimes it mounts all samba shares, sometimes it skips some mounts. So it's like a lottery or roulette: every morning at work I don't know if it will mount all my shares. Now I've tried to add pre-up sleep 5 in /etc/network/interfaces: as Andras told in his comment ( https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/44874/comments/44 ) I rebooted and all my shares are mounted. [Bug 52058] Re: Sony Vaio: coming back from hibernation brings up a network interface that was down before hibernation
Hi, Sorry i was away for sometime and could not try the fix suggested. Today i tried it and it worked but i am not convinced. The fix just made eth1 not to be up during boot time. The problem i reported had eth0 and eth1 up during boot time. i bring down eth1 manually after booting and go to hibernate with just eth0 up. As far as my understanding is hibernation remembers the state of the machine before it hibernates and is not relying on any static files.
