The problem is the device size. Between the minor number and the size of
the device are for devices 1TB at least 2 spaces. The sed regular
expression expects these 2 spaces. When changing the regexp to:

CREATECMD=$(sed -e s/.*major.*//; s/.*\ \([:0-9:]\+\)\ \+\
\([:0-9:]\+\)\ \+[:0-9:]\+\ \+\([:a-z0-9\/:]\+\).*/if [ ! -b \3 ]; then
mknod \3 b \1 \2; fi ; / ; s/\//_/g /proc/partitions)

the script works as expected.

[Bug 53507] Re: nautilus crashes after deleting a folder in the sidebar

2006-07-20 Thread Sebastien Bacher
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 36500 ***

What people have with that behaviour for a week, is there some running
forum discussion about it? That's the 3rf duplicate in a few days, as
said on the other ones, that's not a crasher, you open a window on a
directory, you delete that directory the window is closed since it makes
no sense to keep listing it. Anyway, duplicate of bug #36500 which is
fixed with edgy (it goes on the top directory instead of closing it)

[Bug 18995] Re: Open With dialog not user-friendly

2006-07-20 Thread Matthew East
The upstream bug seems to be doing nothing here. Also, it seems to be
addressed at a slightly different issue - this bug is that firefox
should be able to use the Gnome application chooser, whereas the
upstream bug is about creating a new application chooser, or something
of that kind.

I'm fairly sure that a couple of Ubuntu releases ago firefox used the
Gnome application chooser, whereas with the firefox-gnome-support
package in dapper it now just uses a file chooser.

Has anyone investigated whether it would be difficult to use the Gnome
application chooser when firefox-gnome-support is installed?

I got a similar problem, after partitioning. I chose Back, to get
another view of the partition list, and then everything hang. One of my
partitions (/dev/hda6, my daily use system partition) was defined as
unknown (ext3) before I touch the partitioning, though I did not touch
that partition at all).

[Bug 53452] Re: Nautilus generates missfont.log while generating PDF thumbnails in opened folder

2006-07-20 Thread istoyanov
The problem (missfont.log and problems opening .dvi files with evince)
was solved after I installed tetex-base, tetex-bin, and tetex-extra (as
suggested in the comments for Bug #42410).

However evince-thumbnailer still does not generate a thumbnail for .dvi
files, but I can live with that:)

2006-07-20 Thread istoyanov
After installing tetex-base, tetex-bin and tetex-extra I am able to open
the attached .dvi file. Before installing these packages, evince used to
say DVI document has incorrect format when I was trying to open *any*
.dvi file.

However, I didn't notice any system slow-down while evince tried to
generate a thumbnail, a file named missfont.log appeared in my home
folder instead.

[Bug 53516] Incorrect 5.1 audio when playing DVD

2006-07-20 Thread Denis Wegge
Public bug reported:

This problem occurs in Ubuntu Dapper Drake with the following players:
VLC, Totem, Gxine and Mplayer.

The audio from a DVD or AC3 soundtrack is played through the six
speakers. The output however is not 5.1. It is stereo sound that is
spread to the 6 speakers (in VLC, Totem or Gxine) or 5.1 sound with the
center speaker playing an incorrect channel (in Mplayer, when specifying
6 channel output).

That the output is stereo in VLC, Totem and Gxine can easily be heard
because the voice plays on the rear and front speakers, while it should
only play on the center speaker. Also the surround effects are missing,
the front sound is the same as the rear.

The soundcard is a Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS, connected to a 5.1
speaker setup. ALSA (v. 1.0.10rc3) is used as output system in all these
players.

(The 5.1 sound is correct in MS Windows XP and the Kororaa XGL liveCD
(ALSA v. 1.0.11rc4))

[Bug 53519] After kernel update, system cannot boot because menu.lst hacked badly.

2006-07-20 Thread Michael T. Richter
Public bug reported:

For bizarre reasons my notebook has the hard drive as the secondary
master and the CD-ROM drive as the primary master. This means that my
CD-ROM drive is hda and my hard drive is hdc. Upon updating the kernel
from a security patch, menu.lst got overwritten with an assumption that
my boot drive was /dev/hda. All references to /dev/hdc2 (the root
partition) were studiously rewritten to /dev/hda2. This is a bit
bizarre in that it seemed to be careful to keep my partitions correct
(it kept the 2), but changed the drive around for no observably good
reason from c to a.

This happened on the most recent set of updates for Dapper 6.06LTS.

I noticed that Ubuntu still uses the Anticipatory disk scheduler by

Considering that (if I'm not mistaken) both RedHat and SuSE use CFQ by

I also did some bonnie benchmarks a while back which also indicated that
cfq and deadline perform the best.

[Bug 53415] Re: Small sized updates should show units on size

2006-07-20 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
The point is: k and M are no real units. So no units are used at all and
your complain that we skip the units for small sizes ONLY is wrong,
since we skip them for ALL sizes.

But as I said before, your bug report proves that using different
multipliers (k, M or none) is too confusing.

I am unsure if this should be fixed in the frontend or in apt itself,
since it provides the size of a package.

[Bug 53376] Re: [Bug 53376] Re: Installer crashed

2006-07-20 Thread Michael Rowe
Hi Colin

ls -l /var/log/installer/syslog /var/log/syslog /var/log/partman gives
me the following message:

ls: /var/log/partman: No such file or directory
-rw--- 1 root root 19076 2006-07-18 20:57 /var/log/installer/syslog
-rw-r- 1 root adm 73035 2006-07-20 15:13 /var/log/syslog

I can't open either /var/log/installer/syslog or /var/log/syslog to
view the contents, even as root and there is no /var/log/partman in
the file manager.

[Bug 44436] Re: disks-manager wrongly reports DVD drive as CD-ROM

2006-07-20 Thread Fabián Rodríguez
I am not sure why this has been categorize low priority. I added some
more information to the upstream bug. I really think this is an
important usability issue, as more people use DVD-R/W drives and this
seems to imply Ubuntu is incable of rightly identifying this simple
device. I deal with lots of new Ubuntu users and it's getting hard to
explain this, if it is only a label problem.

[Bug 13797] Re: Does not fall back to next interface when kill switch is enabled?

2006-07-20 Thread Paul Flint
I have a similar problem on the IBM T60 Laptop. Aparently the Levono
company extended the function key control into the Windows environment.
This is Ok until you want to switch video or if you turn off your
wireless card. I am struggling to turn it back on.

Anyone with any good ideas on this one please let me know.

Regards,

Paul

[Bug 53527] Settings are lost when upgrading

2006-07-20 Thread Pekka Kujansuu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

It seems like gdm can lose some settings when it's been upgraded to a new
version. In particular, I had gdm set up to login automatically as a certain
user. The system was upgraded to Dapper from Breezy, and when it was rebooted,
the login screen came up instead of my desktop. This has actually happened
before, but I'm not quite sure if it was during the upgrade from Hoary to
Breezy or if it was a regular package upgrade.
I also have to note that this happened on my parents' system, and I use Kubuntu
on my own system, so I cannot provide you with much additional information.

[Bug 38574] Re: Pb syncing treo 650 on dapper drake

2006-07-20 Thread Matt Davey
Glad that the kernel update appears to solve this issue, and that
setting a non-zero timeout appears to solve the problem with the ttyUSB
devices hanging around after a sync completes. I'm pretty sure this
latter issue has been solved in gnome-pilot CVS, and the timeout=0 trick
is only required for pilot-link 0.12.0 pre-releases (and maybe Suse's
patched 0.11.8 version).

Matt

[Bug 53532] Per application settings lost between sessions

2006-07-20 Thread Fabián Rodríguez
Public bug reported:

The Per application settings option in the xfce4-xkb-plugin is lost
after logging out.

To reproduce:
1) install the xfce4-xkb-plugin package in Xubuntu
2) Add the Keyboard Layou Switcher applet to a panel
3) Right click on it, choose Preferences
4) Uncheck the Per application settings option
5) Logout, login again and repeat the process to verify it is still checked.

If/when this is fixed, may I suggest to make this option OFF / unchecked
by default ? It seems it would only be useful if one uses an alternate
keyboard layout and if this is the case, I think most people would like
to use their alternate keyboard layout in most windows /apps, no the
opposite.

This should fix the issue. The kernel compiles and boots with the patch.

Please consider that I'm not an experienced kernel developer or C
programmer.

Please sync the latest 0.8.2-1 from Debian. The new dependency
introduced here is not needed and it should build fine now, so it is Ok
to overwrite all ubuntu changes and sync from debian. I have not tested
it though.

What would be more interesting is a dmesg output from dapper,

[Bug 44436] Re: disks-manager wrongly reports DVD drive as CD-ROM

2006-07-20 Thread Sebastien Bacher
It's low priority for the distribution, because that's only feature, of
one application and not one of the most used daily by people. Setting it
to medium would mean it's fairly annoying to most of users in their
daily use of the distribution, that's probably not the case for that
issue
