[Bug 36581] Re: gam_server consumes lots of cpu time
I renamed gam_server to gam_server.disabled and my system is now running well. I don't know what the consequences of this action are. Someone else said that they had done it and they had had few problems. ..from this page... http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=123132 So do it at your own risk. [Bug 55270] Double-click timeout is not applied to X
Public bug reported: A while back I reached my frustration limit while using Netbeans (a Java Swing IDE). It was very difficult to select anything in my project tree because the double click rate was way to fast for me (and most users I can imagine). Changing the Double-click timeout in Ubuntu's mouse preferences dialog did nothing to fix the issue. From what I can tell this dialog only effects Gnome applications because the setting is written to ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/%gconf.xml After some research I found the solution: create .Xresources in my home directory with the line *multiClickTime: 400. After a log out things worked correctly. [Bug 55271] Netboot install from Xubuntu alternate install installs Ubuntu desktop, not Xubuntu desktop
Public bug reported: Install a standard PXE boot configuration with the pxe package, dhcp3-server, atftpd. I used /tftpboot as root catalog for atftpd (standard). From the xubuntu-6.06-alternate-i386.iso image copy all files and subdirectories from /install/netboot to /tftpboot (Make sure permissions are right so atftpd can actually read the files and search the directories). Boot it. This boots and installs the Ubuntu desktop install, not the Xubuntu desktop. [Bug 55230] Re: [usability] don't pop up progress dialogs
So the problem is the focus stealing and not the progress windows. The focus stealing issue seems to be a window manager problem, since the progress dialogs are provided by a different application. You also have to consider that the application is also used on slow systems. And updating the cache takes longer than 10 seconds on these machines. That is why I am in favor of a progress dialog. I would like to hide the progress dialogs at all: See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BackgroundPackageInstallation Space is rare in the main window and changing widgets in runtime is not nice for people using screen readers. [Bug 54139] Re: Ubuntu 6.06 installer crash - Bootloader config?
Hi, glad to see you found a solution. In the end i abandoned the live install CD and downloaded the alternate install disk which worked a charm. Think i may have needed to install lilo first then grub later on (for one reason or another i ended up doing that). Strangely grub-install locks up pretty much every time i run it but it eventually it went right and i now have a nice grub boot loader with splash screen, xfs root and all... :) Does making /boot an ext2 partition (with / as xfs) let you install with the live cd? [Bug 54139] Re: Ubuntu 6.06 installer crash - Bootloader config?
OK looks like this problems definitely a grub + xfs /boot thing, it's been observed and confirmed in debian bug reports: re: http://bugs.debian.org/243835 - The debian installer can install a system with / or /boot on XFS. When it tries to install grub on such a system, the grub-install run hangs, seemingly forever. The last thing output is Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. The cpu is pegged too. This has been reproduced on more than one machine, and I found something that looked like the same problem on google. I've seen it with both the 2.4.25 and 2.6.5 kernels. We have put a guard in d-i to deal with this, it warns users that XFS /boot (or root) will not work with grub. This is not an ideal solution, users want to use XFS for these partitions. - Perhaps something similar should be done here? -Jesse -- Ubuntu 6.06 installer crash - Bootloader config? https://launchpad.net/bugs/54139 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

So edgy had an usplash update and on boot, uspash is very dark (althought sometimes it turns bright) and it stops at 'loading kernel log' then nothing. I don't think it's a duplicate of bug #55048 , do you ? I tried to remove 'splash' from kernel arguments as said in bug #55048 and it worked, so sytem started and i just updated edgy to see wether an update was avaiable, it was (august 5th morning UTC), so then i re-added 'splash' to kernel arguments, I rebooted and it didn't work the same way. [Bug 17881] Re: usb flash memory hangs after copying few MB
I am getting the same or very similar problem with dapper and kernel 2.6.15-26-686. I have a Motorola E1070 mobile phone which can work as a usb mass storage device. When I connect it, everything seems to work, and I can read files from it OK. However, as soon as I try to write anything I consistently get messages like: Aug 3 10:45:10 localhost kernel: [17235773.02] sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x1007 Aug 3 10:45:10 localhost kernel: [17235773.02] end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 1472 Aug 3 10:45:10 localhost kernel: [17235773.02] Buffer I/O error on device sda1, logical block 1235 Aug 3 10:45:10 localhost kernel: [17235773.02] lost page write due to I/O error on sda1 Aug 3 10:45:15 localhost kernel: [17235777.884000] sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x1007 Aug 3 10:45:15 localhost kernel: [17235777.884000] end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 1473 Aug 3 10:45:15 localhost kernel: [17235777.884000] Buffer I/O error on device sda1, logical block 1236 Aug 3 10:45:15 localhost kernel: [17235777.884000] lost page write due to I/O error on sda1 Aug 3 10:45:20 localhost kernel: [17235782.336000] sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x1007 Aug 3 10:45:20 localhost kernel: [17235782.336000] end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 1474 Aug 3 10:45:20 localhost kernel: [17235782.336000] Buffer I/O error on device sda1, logical block 1237 Aug 3 10:45:20 localhost kernel: [17235782.336000] lost page write due to I/O error on sda1 Aug 3 10:45:24 localhost kernel: [17235786.772000] sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x1007 Aug 3 10:45:24 localhost kernel: [17235786.772000] end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 1475 Aug 3 10:45:24 localhost kernel: [17235786.772000] Buffer I/O error on device sda1, logical block 1238 Aug 3 10:45:24 localhost kernel: [17235786.772000] lost page write due to I/O error on sda1 It doesn't seem to cause any kernel panics or make the system unstable. [Bug 55277] Unlock window does not appear
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver After one of latest upgrades (but not to gnome-screensaver package unfortunately (I've tried older version)) when my screensaver activates, and then when I move the mouse, press a key etc. the unlock window does not appear (I either got a blank black screen or last frame from screensaver running). However, I can type in my password and press enter and it unlocks. I've done some investigation and run gnome-screensaver --no-daemon --debug from console (interesting part below). As you can see there are some errors from glib. As I'm not a GTK/Glib programmer (nor I have seen gnome-screensaver source) I cannot tell where exactly the problem is. On fresh user on the same machine everything works ok. So probably some part of my settings are wrong/corrupted. Output from gnome-screensaver --no-daemon --debug follows: [check_for_clock_skew] gs-watcher-x11.c:1327 (11:08:55): checking wall clock for hibernation, changed: 0:00:00 [_gs_watcher_check_pointer_position] gs-watcher-x11.c:1407 (11:08:56): Idle 12 seconds [check_for_clock_skew] gs-watcher-x11.c:1327 (11:08:56): checking wall clock for hibernation, changed: 0:00:00 [_gs_watcher_notice_activity] gs-watcher-x11.c:569 (11:08:57): Activity detected: resetting timers [remove_idle_timer] gs-watcher-x11.c:464 (11:08:57): killing idle_timer (12, 11) [add_idle_timer] gs-watcher-x11.c:477 (11:08:57):starting idle_timer (11, 15) [_gs_watcher_check_pointer_position] gs-watcher-x11.c:1407 (11:08:57): Idle 0 seconds [check_for_clock_skew] gs-watcher-x11.c:1327 (11:08:57): checking wall clock for hibernation, changed: 0:00:01 [_gs_watcher_notice_activity] gs-watcher-x11.c:569 (11:08:58): Activity detected: resetting timers [remove_idle_timer] gs-watcher-x11.c:464 (11:08:58): killing idle_timer (12, 15) [add_idle_timer] gs-watcher-x11.c:477 (11:08:58):starting idle_timer (11, 16) [gs_manager_set_lock_active] gs-manager.c:363 (11:08:58):Setting lock active: 1 [gs_grab_get_keyboard] gs-grab-x11.c:166 (11:08:58): Grabbing keyboard widget=A1 [gs_grab_get_mouse] gs-grab-x11.c:192 (11:08:58):Grabbing mouse widget=A1 [gs_manager_activate] gs-manager.c:1320 (11:08:58): fading out [_gs_watcher_notice_activity] gs-watcher-x11.c:569 (11:08:58): Activity detected: resetting timers [remove_idle_timer] gs-watcher-x11.c:464 (11:08:58): killing idle_timer (12, 16) [add_idle_timer] gs-watcher-x11.c:477 (11:08:58):starting idle_timer (11, 18) [_gs_watcher_check_pointer_position] gs-watcher-x11.c:1407 (11:08:58): Idle 0 seconds [check_for_clock_skew] gs-watcher-x11.c:1327 (11:08:58): checking wall clock for hibernation, changed: 0:00:01 [fade_done_cb] gs-manager.c:1276 (11:08:59): fade completed, showing windows [window_map_cb] gs-manager.c:1036 (11:08:59):Handling window map event [gs_window_clear] gs-window-x11.c:255 (11:08:59):Clearing window [clear_all_children] gs-window-x11.c:230 (11:08:59): Clearing all child windows [window_show_cb] gs-manager.c:1088 (11:08:59): Handling window show (gnome-screensaver:11858): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_hash_table_lookup: assertion `hash_table != NULL' failed (gnome-screensaver:11858): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Internal error: the configuration system was not initialized. [Bug 52914] Re: Lack of visual feedback on password entry
I don't particularly want to change this in shadow; I would get complaints citing security (i.e. you can look over somebody's shoulder and see the number of characters in their password). I also doubt the desktop folks will want to change their situation, citing usability as you do. I realise it's inconsistent, but, given the tension here, I think if there is an inconsistency then it's probably in the right place. It's configurable in at least /etc/gdm/gdm.conf: # Do not show any visible feedback in the password field. This is standard for # instance in console, xdm and ssh. #UseInvisibleInEntry=false ... and it's configurable in /etc/login.defs: # When prompting for password without echo, getpass() can optionally # display a random number (in the range 1 to GETPASS_ASTERISKS) of '*' # characters for each character typed. This feature is designed to # confuse people looking over your shoulder when you enter a password :-). # Also, the new getpass() accepts both Backspace (8) and Delete (127) # keys to delete previous character (to cope with different terminal # types), Control-U to delete all characters, and beeps when there are # no more characters to delete, or too many characters entered. # # Setting GETPASS_ASTERISKS to 1 results in more traditional behaviour - # exactly one '*' displayed for each character typed. # # Setting GETPASS_ASTERISKS to 0 disables the '*' characters (Backspace, # Delete, Control-U and beep continue to work as described above). # # Setting GETPASS_ASTERISKS to -1 reverts to the traditional getpass() # without any new features. This is the default. # #GETPASS_ASTERISKS 1 ** Changed in: shadow (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged = Wishlist Status: Unconfirmed = Rejected -- Lack of visual feedback on password entry https://launchpad.net/bugs/52914 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 55278] Nautilus crashes on folder with many thousands of files
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Nautilus shows a message that there are too many file to show them all, if a folder contains more then 1 files. But if I continue to work on that folder (selecting them all with Ctrl+A, deselecting a few, trying to delete) nautilus freezes and crashes. During the freeze, it does not use any CPU time, but there is no response and no graphic update. I might depend on the available memory, since it takes sometimes a minute before it crashes. And while I am working in that folder, the total number of files on het bottom-left is still counting. The folder was in icon-view. After reducing the number of files to 1, I still got the message (too many files to show them all), but Nautilus did not crash. Thanks for following up. Without the log files it's impossible to debug the problem - the crash dialog alone doesn't help much. That said, I think I'll have to reject this bug unless you can reproduce the error and attach the log files. The Buffer I/O problems you describe are indications of a faulty CD (burned too quickly or scratched). The magazine cd is probably the desktop cd (not the alternate that you downloaded). You can install from the alternate though just fine - it usually turns out to be more reliable as well. After installation, my bets are that wireless will work (if it works with the LiveCD, it will work with an installed system). In the localhost facility everything seems to be fine, the printer is detected and configured, the printer icon shows the green led on, but if I try to print a test page it says: Unsupported format 'application/postscript'! [Bug 52803] Re: insufficient dependency on xfonts-utils
What version of xfonts-utils are you using when you run into this problem? As far as I can see, there are only 1.0.6 versions available in Debian and Ubuntu (in any release), which should not trigger this issue. The solution would be to modify debhelper, which adds the dependency on xfonts-utils using ${misc:Depends}. The current version (including 5.0.37.3) adds a dependeny without versioning. I don't think that it is necessary to fix debhelper in this point because there is no version of xfonts-utils available that doesn't understand the --x11r7-layout parameter of update-fonts-dir, neither in old releases nor in current test releases. So it's a alpha testing only problem, which is already solved. -- insufficient dependency on xfonts-utils https://launchpad.net/bugs/52803 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
