[Bug 63276] Improper hint to enable modifacation of settings
Public bug reported: The tool is not set up for use after the install, one must add an option to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. The tool tip says to add "UseShm" "true" to the synaptic section. This does nothing, as the actual option required is "SHMConfig" "on". This bug required some research before I could find the solution given. I would think that the tooltips given to configure the tool, should be accurate. ** Affects: ksynaptics (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Improper hint to enable modifacation of settings https://launchpad.net/bugs/63276 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 63273] Re: GAIM should not be the sole irc client
I agree gaim should not be default in install due to a few reasons irssi is alot lighter than gaim xchat is about the same size as gaim if not lighter. most people that i talk to use xchat or irssi. gaim is normally used for other clients other than irc and we dont have support channels on anywhere but irc. last if the user installs server install it should have a IRC client by default (it has sound by default) atleast in dapper it does i havent tried edgy server install. I personally dont think gaim is IRC freindly and with new users i think xchat is easier to use. Last i heard upgrading from dapper to edgy removes xchat. that might be a bug though. -- GAIM should not be the sole irc client https://launchpad.net/bugs/63273 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 63273] GAIM should not be the sole irc client
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop In the metapackage ubuntu-desktop, GAIM should not be the only irc client. I say this because GAIM is not configurable as an irc client. XChat is a highly configurable, easy to use IRC client. People also sometimes have problems with X when booting up for the first time, and if they didn't setup a dual-boot and don't have another system, they're machine will be in the hands of they're local LUG. irssi (with the alias 'irc') permitted people to use IRC when they're X didn't work and need help getting it to work. irssi also doesn't take up much room on the CD, 1013kB. ** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- GAIM should not be the sole irc client https://launchpad.net/bugs/63273 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 62894] Re: Strange behavior while moving maximized window (xinerama)
Hi Sebastien, I've looked into the source code of metacity and could find the crucial lines. I've atteched a diff. This is my very first patch, so please forgive me if there's anything wrong with it. The problem did not only occur when dragging horizontally starting on the right monitor without "shaking loose" the windows first. It also occurs when first "shaking loose", then moving to the left and reattaching with the cursor on the left monitor but with the window- center on the right monitor. Metacity first sets the coordinates (window->saved_rect) to the top left corner of the monitor and unmaximizes the grabbed window. Then, it is maximizes it again. At this point window->user_rect is used as reference to which xinerama workspace the window belongs. Therefore, the window is maximized on the wrong monitor. When dragging the window further the procedure is repeated: restoring the window to the left monitor top left and immediately maximizing to the wrong monitor yielding the weird window "jumping". The patch is a two-liner: The window->save_rect coordinates are also written to window->user_rect which is legitimate since it is a user requested moving operation. With that the window is maximized to the correct xinerama workspace. What are the right steps to fix the bug upstream, too? ** Attachment added: "Patch fixing strange behaviour when moving maximized windows" http://librarian.launchpad.net/4565558/007_moving_maximized_windows.patch -- Strange behavior while moving maximized window (xinerama) https://launchpad.net/bugs/62894 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

RE: [Bug 63176] Re: Can't connect to my Kubuntu laptop to my WPA enablednetwork.
Dear Ms., Mz., Miss, or Mrs. Hobbs, The current version of knetworkmanager I'm running is 0.1-0ubuntu1. Current version of knworkconf is 3.5.4-0ubuntu3. I'm currently running Kubuntu Edgy Eft 6.10 with all the updates. The repository version of ndiswrapper-utils didn't work when atempting to load the Windows drivers. ndiswrapper -i reported no ndiswrapper from three different drivers. After that I went to the ndiswrapper project page, downloaded 1.23 source code tarball from SourceForge and compiled. From that point on my Broadcom BCM4318 was recognized by Kubuntu as being Enabled in System Settings/Network Connections. It was at that point I installed the Edgy repository knetworkmanager. It shows the networks in the neighborhood (as I live in an apartment complex with a lot of wireless networks). However, when trying to connect to the one in my home which has WPA security enabled, it brings up the Connect to Wireless Network window for me to fill in the WPA Personal password. After typing in my password, it goes to Configuring Device and sticks at 28%. Never do I see KDE Wallet to save the passkey or ask me for a login to let knetworkmanager use the wallet for the passkey. When using Dapper Drake, the first thing it would do no matter the settings in Security, it would pop up the wallet login before providing the password to knetworkmanager. For some reason it fails to do this in Edgy Eft. Also, this was a clean install from a freshly burned disc image bit torrented down to my desktop with ktorrent which is also running Edgy Eft Beta at the moment (installed from the same disc image). Both installs were done late last night and early this morning. Should you know who wrote the Xorg mouse driver for Eft, please thank him/her for me. This is the first time I've had my Microsoft wireless mouse work without a total system hang every 30 minutes. Matter of fact, I have yet to have it hang the system. I'm a very satisfied Ubuntu/Kubuntu user. Almost six months ago I switched from Fedora Core. I've not looked back yet. If you are able to provide me with more help with this issue from the above prescribed symtoms I greatly appreciate it. By the way, I may be new to Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but I'm a CompTIA A+ certified tech. I am very good at spotting troubles and hopefully I provided you with a thorough enough accounting of the issue to help you resolve this. I've seen another post on the Ubuntu forums saying ndiswrapper was currently broken, but I didn't go out immediately and compile the SourceForge project code till after trying the packages to verify what was heard. I however need the ndiswrapper for the WPA security till either the Broadcom project completes its work or Linux in general adopts the Dreamscape driver model that I've been hearing about and following with great interest. [Bug 63268] "Services" application in Ubuntu 6.0.6 LTS only shows currently active services and doesn't provide any mechanism to modify settings.
Public bug reported: Click on "Services" Icon to open the services editor. After entering root password, a window opens displaying a few active services in a list box. There is a check box beside each service and presumabely one can disable an active service, but, there is no way to see or activate inactive services (as in say SysV Init Editor in other distros). Clicking the help button, displays a help window and instructions for (what appears to be) a different application. The images in the help file show a window with - run level selector -list box displaying all services, whether active or not and a check box to select. As the actual application differs from the help file, I suspect someone has "dumbed down" the application to the point that it is not usable, rather than that the menu link is broken. [Bug 58585] Re: Installer is crashing (all disk activity stops) at scanning mirror message
Am afraid I don't have the log file you requested Colin, but I can provide some steps to (easily) reproduce the bug. This is caused by the environment, and assumptions the installer makes when it is connected to a network. 1. Attach PC to LAN, ensure the network does *not* have any connection to the Internet, but is a viable network in every other way. 2. Begin the installation, I do not believe it matters what settings are used. 3. The installer reaches the 'Configuring Apt...' and 'Scanning the mirrors' stage. 4. Installer hangs and does not timeout (in this case it was left to work itself out for at least five minutes). 5. Remove network cable from PC, the installer will jump to life again! It seems the installer is assuming that the PC has an available Internet connection because it has any network connection. This is incorrect, the installer should attempt to detect an Internet connection then timeout after a reasonable period (e.g. 30 secs) or an amount of retrying (e.g. 3 attempts). -- Installer is crashing (all disk activity stops) at scanning mirror message https://launchpad.net/bugs/58585 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 62752] Re: timezone selection in ubiquity hangs, when just proceeding and clicking next
I have possibly the same problem. Minor difference it either hangs at the keyboard selection screen or the timezone screen depending on how long it takes you to get through first screen. I did notice that there is another window (minimized in window list) that appears when you launch the installer called "Granting Rights". When that closes seems to be when the installer will hang (in its forward progression). Although this may just be complete coincidence. As Daniel mentioned it remains responsive to non-greyed controls. well, because this became a big issue for me and my users i googled a lot and finally got this solved... the segfault issue was caused by a previos mod to hald.conf trying to solve the original issue, after comparing between the bad an sane system i've managed to found the problem and after looking to the policy problem i've added this to /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf so is working again right now... the info needed was founded here: http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-kde@lists.debian.org/msg25907.html and this http://www.nabble.com/Bug-347233:-dbus-1-on-sarge-segfaults-if-a -unpriviliged-user-run-%22lshal%22-t880937.html something i believe is important: the sane system is my home laptop, and standalone system. the other two systems with the issue are using ldap as auth backend for the users. from the last link it seems to be some issue here with a different auth backend system. in fact at the laptop system the hal.conf mod is not needed but at the ldap system is needed... [Bug 61883] Re: abnt2 layout broken when using evdev driver.
Same here using dapper. However I can get most of the keys working (like the arrow keys, Home, End, etc.) if I set Option "XkbModel" "evdev" instead of "abnt2". But there is at least one "dead" key, the key associated to the slash and the question mark. Other keys are mapped to the wrong character like backslash or closing bracket. I'll try to upgrade now to edgy and see it if works. [Bug 23548] Re: Problem with TLS support
This bug had not been an issue for me in Dapper, but has popped up in Edgy. At issue is a connection to a courier imap server using TLS authentication. Evolution gives the error: "Failed to connect to IMAP server [server.address] in secure mode: SSL negotiations failed" On the server side, Courier logs: "couriertls: accept: error:1408F10B:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:wrong version number". Courier is running on Debian Stable (Sarge), and is up to date. The IMAP server certificate is of the self-signed lazy "let courier set it up" variety. [Bug 57081] Re: scim-chewing: user database file can be corrupted, which render the whole package useless
** Description changed: The version of scim-chewing in dapper, 0.2.1, has a bug that can cause the user's database file be corrupted when scim exits abnormally. Once the database file is corrupted, the user can not use scim-chewing anymore.
