[Bug 77782] No root file system during install.Unable to install Kubuntu 6.1 via installer
Public bug reported: Using Kubuntu 6.1 x64 (official Edgy relese). My system is AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ on MSI K9N Platinum motherboard (nForce 570 chip set), 1 Gb DDR II (dual-channel) RAM, 2 x DVD RW, ATI x1300 graphic card and 3 HDDs. About HDDs: First (sda) has 4 partitions:FAT32, NTFS, EXT2 (with Kubuntu 6.06.1 installed), remainder is big EXT2 (for data storage).I'd tried to install Edgy on this HDD over Kubuntu 6.06.1 and after manual partitioning (I'm not willing to trash my data, really) installer always stucks with No root file system error. However 6.06.1 installs OK in same configuration. Then I bought 2 another HDDs.Today I'd tried to install Kubuntu 6.1 onto clean HDD (sdb). Partitioner had some unfair issues with manual partitioning. It failed to create EXT3 or NTFS partitions.Only EXT2 and Fat32 worked for me so HDD now contains FAT32 partition, then unformatted one(intended to be NTFS but formatting fails), then EXT2 (intended to be /) and another EXT2(intendeed to be data store). So, finally partitions were here.I'd selected partitions in installer for / and other mount points but ... installer refused to install again with No root file system. This actually prevents me from installing KUbuntu 6.1 since I'm not a Linux guru (at least now). ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- No root file system during install.Unable to install Kubuntu 6.1 via installer https://launchpad.net/bugs/77782 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: language-pack-kde-lt-base Package in Edgy includes three files that have been generated with some fuzzy strings marked as ok strings. One of those files language-pack-kde-lt-base: usr/share/locale- langpack/lt/LC_MESSAGES/korganizer.mo makes Kmail menu Message look strange: Message Copy to #-#-#-#-# kmail.po (kmail) #-#-#-#-# Move to #-#-#-#-# kopete.po (kopete) #-#-#-#-# Move to while it should be simply Move to displayed I will attach a screenshot with a lithuanian strings displayed. The other files are konversation.mo and libkcal.mo: = [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/share/locale-langpack/lt/LC_MESSAGES$ grep #-#-# * Binary file konversation.mo matches Binary file korganizer.mo matches Binary file libkcal.mo matches = I have corrected the files on Rosetta today (imported upstream versions of korganizer.po and libkcal.po and a corrected version of konversation.po) so THE PACKAGE NEEDS TO BE SIMPLY REGENERATED FROM SOURCES. ADDITIONAL INFO: The problem comes from the Rosetta version of korganizer.po and other files for edgy, the upstream files from KDE branch stable ( except for konversation which is not there, and I have not checked its upstream) do not contain the problem. I am not sure who made the mistake - though it might be that it is not the translators mistake, but some other problem on Rosetta. Interestingly, if I move the file korganizer.mo, the menu entry in Kmail gets displayed correctly, and - in Lithuanian! So the program does take the string from somewhere else. I have no clue where from the correct string comes. I don't have the package kde-i18n-lt installed, I only have language-pack-lt-base and language-pack-lt (and the last one does not have file korganizer.mo in it). ** Affects: language-pack-kde-lt-base (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- language-pack-kde-lt-base includes some fuzzy translation strings marked as OK https://launchpad.net/bugs/77780 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 77768] should not store indexes in ~
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: beagle By default Beagle should not store indexes in a user's home directory. In *many* cases, home directories are not local file systems, but either NFS or AFS mounted. The data Beagle uses (including it's own socket) is cache data. It can be destroyed without harm. The data is also system specific. It would be better of Beagle stored it's data in a directory like /var/cache/beagle/indexes/$username.$rnd using basic temporary directory name allocation methods: find an existing directory $uid.*, check owner, if not create a new one. This would allow beagle to maintain it's own data per-system the user logs into, as well as making it part of the system policy that the data can actually be deleted. It would also allow beagle to function out of the box on remotely mounted ~ directories. ** Affects: beagle (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- should not store indexes in ~ https://launchpad.net/bugs/77768 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Suspend appears to work fine (and it did work with this machine in the past, early on with Dapper and before), but resuming does not lead to the desktop. Instead, the screen shows an effect that almost looks like a screensaver (but de-installing screensavers doesn't help, and it's not a screensaver I recognize anyway): The screen start black but then slowly bleeds white from the edges of the screen, until the whole screen is more or less white (there is a bit of a greyscale pattern). There are also a number of colored vertical lines. The bleeding effect looks very screensaver like, though the vertical lines don't. After a while the screen is entirely white and the effect restarts. The screen stays in this mode no matter what I do. There does seem to be some response to keyboard input: ctrl-alt-delete triggers a reboot after a while. ctrl-alt-backspace appears to have no effect, though. I first encountered this problem midway during Dapper. It must've been introduced by an upgrade as early on in Dapper and before Suspend did work. Initially I thought this was my own fault - I installed the fglrx drivers, de-installed them again, and the suspend started flaking out about the same time. I started realizing something deeper was wrong than a hanging screensaver when de-installing all screensavers in the system failed to make the problem go away. Nothing I tried seemed to make this problem go away, and recently I decided to do a clean reinstall of the OS with Edgy. No fglrx drivers have touched this installation. Exact same problem. I fiddled some with the settings in /etc/default/acpi-support but this had no effect at all. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- resuming suspend leads to screen corruption https://launchpad.net/bugs/77736 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 77734] Disk Read Errors during boot-time probe of physical softRAID drives
Public bug reported: I appear to have stumbled upon a bug in the kernel that can, in certain circumstances, both cause the kernel-boot to get stuck in an endless loop, and possibly damage the IDE drives over time (based on experience). Using Edgy Eft Desktop Live CD, preparing to install to an existing Windows system. This probably occurs during an installed system-boot too, but I've not got that far as yet. Scenario: PC with a Promise FastTrak TX2000 SoftRAID controller and 4x 60GB IDE parallel ATA drives configured as RAID 10 (Mirror + Stripe) to provide one logical 120GB drive. The PC already has Windows 2003 Server installed and booting from the RAID 10, with 2 NTFS partitions. I wanted to shrink the 2nd partition to make room to install Ubuntu 6.10 from the Live CD. See my Ubuntu forums article for a detailed explanation of my experience: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1958918 Bug: When booting Edgy from the CD the kernel loads the Promise fasttrak controller module pdc202xx and then probes each of the connected IDE hard drives (for a partition table?) dmraid not being loaded so its not dealing with the logical drive. Large drives use LBA addressing to overcome the CHS limitations of partition tables. If the probe finds a partition table on any drive, it then tries to seek to the starting sector of each partition (presumably to read its boot- sector system-id byte?), and also tries to seek into the last few sectors of the partition (looking for a superblock?). On a RAID 0 array where the striping causes the partition table to represent a larger logical drive, the starting and ending sector numbers of some partitions are beyond the end of the physical drive the partition table is written on. This causes the Disk Read Errors reported here. The fix would be for the probe to compare the physical number of cylinders reported by the drive (as seen by e.g. fdisk /dev/hde or fdisk /dev/hdg) to the starting/ending sector numbers for the LBA device. If the entries in the partition are beyond the end of the physical disk the probe should handle the situation gracefully (This could potentially be used as a cue to auto-loading dmraid). Once dmraid is loaded fdisk /dev/mapper/raidarrayname shows the correct total number of logical sectors. [Bug 77722] [feisty] SATA errors with 2.6.20, freezes
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6-amd64-generic Upgrading to kernel 2.6.20 in feisty introduced many errors and freezes on my AMD64 install (I also have a x86 install but I'm not yet ready to upgrade it to feisty so I can not tell if it is AMD64 specific yet). These errors are not present with 2.6.19 and appears with both 2.6.20-2-generic and 2.6.20-3-generic. I have a nforce4 motherboard, on which are plugged 4 sata hard drives, in RAID5 (and an IDE CD-writer). The errors (visible at the end of the attached dmesg output) seems to hit only the last hard drives which get reseted now and then, leading to system freezes during a few (up to 30) seconds. I used to have the nvidia driver loaded but I am now running a clean kernel and the errors are still here. I can test on a 32bit install on the same system once Bug #75052 is fixed, until then I prefer keeping a booting system out of two :) ---dmesg output [0.00] Linux version 2.6.20-3-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.1.2 20061212 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.1-21ubuntu3)) #2 SMP Tue Dec 26 02:36:13 UTC 2006 (Ubuntu 2.6.20-3.4-generic) [0.00] Command line: root=/dev/mapper/vg_raid-lv_memroot64 ro quiet break=mount [0.00] BIOS-provided physical RAM map: [0.00] BIOS-e820: - 0009f800 (usable) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 0009f800 - 000a (reserved) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 000f - 0010 (reserved) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 0010 - 3fff (usable) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 3fff - 3fff3000 (ACPI NVS) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 3fff3000 - 4000 (ACPI data) [0.00] BIOS-e820: e000 - f000 (reserved) [0.00] BIOS-e820: fec0 - fec01000 (reserved) [0.00] BIOS-e820: fee0 - fef0 (reserved) [0.00] BIOS-e820: fefffc00 - ff00 (reserved) [0.00] BIOS-e820: - 0001 (reserved) [0.00] Entering add_active_range(0, 0, 159) 0 entries of 3200 used [0.00] Entering add_active_range(0, 256, 262128) 1 entries of 3200 used [0.00] end_pfn_map = 1048576 [0.00] DMI 2.3 present. [Bug 77731] Re: I tried using the e-mail that comes with ubuntu and got the message broken pipe I have not clue what that is.
Thanks for your feedback. We're gonna need a bit more information to figure out what the problem is. What exactly do you mean by tried using the e-mail? Did you open an application? Using the menus? A panel shortcut? Command-line? Are you talking about the Evolution email program? Where did the broken pipe message appear? In a dialog? On the command-line? Was there any other information along with this message? ** Changed in: control-center (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed = Needs Info -- I tried using the e-mail that comes with ubuntu and got the message broken pipe I have not clue what that is. https://launchpad.net/bugs/77731 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

When i go to System - Preferences - Sound everything on the devices tab is set to Autodetect or ALSA for recording. I have set Music and Video to my second device (Intel ICH5) and when i click test, the tone comes out of the Intel soundcard. But if i open totem-gestreamer or Rhythmbox and play audio/video all sound go through my default sound device. When i open gconf-editor and go to System - gstreamer - 0.10 - default 'musicaudiosink' and 'videosink' are set to 'autoaudiosink'. [Bug 77725] No Driver for Attansic Gigabit Ethernet
Public bug reported: I noticed that from Ubuntu Edgy and previous versions of Ubuntu, there is no driver for the Attansic Ethernet card. To enable this driver, you must be using Edgy and have the motherboard manufacturer's driver CD - otherwise, you won't have internet, which greatly would limit the use of Ubuntu. You must be using Edgy, as it installs default with the Build- Essential package - which is needed to make install this driver. I suggest this driver be added in future kernel updates. Ciao. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- No Driver for Attansic Gigabit Ethernet https://launchpad.net/bugs/77725 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
