This test produced an applet that was working fine, didn't show any errors, no red cross, and it opens a volume control when one clicks on it, which seems to work. When I removed this from the panel he command line instance stopped. Then I added again, without a command line instance running. It has the red cross again. The first time I click it, it says: The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured. You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting Remove From Panel from the menu. Thank you for the instructions. I suspected something like that. Meanwhile, I have first removed the update to 2.6.17-11. Then installed the restricted modules and reinstalled the update. Things are working again. Thanks for your help. Peter PS: I noticed in the forum that other people encountered identical or almost identical problems. I will post your solution as final entry on my own post. Stephen Drake wrote: Sorry for the long delay, I should have subscribed earlier. The kernel modules needed to interface with the Atheros card need to be installed alongside the new kernel due to ABI changes. This should be taken care of by the linux-restricted-modules package, which depends on the latest version. For some reason this wasn't installed (sometimes it's removed due to conflicts, such as non-free nvidia drivers). So if you install that package you should be okay for future updates. So please add that package and try to run the updates, if anything is to be removed then cancel and check them over. Re: [Bug 68196] Re: IBM thinkpad A31p: wireless ok in 6.06, not in 6.10.
Yes, there is now connection. Only two little questions: 1. The interface is eth1 - shouldnt it be wlan0, as iwconfig lists it when there is no wireless? also, the icon in the top menubar in Gnome is not a wireless icon, and now that I am connected its tooltip says No network connection. The other net icon says Network connection: lo 2. The default roaming mode located my net ok. But when I switched off roaming mode and entered the WEP key (ascii) then it could not connect. Then I switched off roaming and entered again, then success. Below is what I got with your two last commands. So .. nearly ok. My list of post-install-things-to-do is getting shorter: the fonts are smoother but still a poor selection of monospace fonts, all of which are much better on black-on-white than white-on-black. And too many fonts all in a long long list, good and bad together. Same with file color schemes: they have to be adjusted according to the window background. I always have to make directories blue background and white foreground because I use white-on-black, for example. I, and my fellow workers, spend all our time in Emacs, but Ubuntu does not have a decent Emacs-setup (with harmonic subdued colors for the most popular modes and fonts loaded) whereas for example Mandrivadrake has. Then a question i often get is whats the difference between [OK] button and [close] button - are the settings saved with [close]? The prompt (which I prefer as '(\h) \w ') cannot be set under profile it seems. Ok, i shouldnt write all this here. Thanks for helping. [Bug 25931] Re: Failed to initalize HAL.
Martin, I get this too when I have auto-login turned on in GDM. I get the 3 error messages you mention, then hald leaks memory something fierce (uses up all 3GB of my machine's memory in a few days). When I turn off auto-login so I have to spend a few tens of seconds in GDM before Gnome fires up, everything starts up without errors. I'd like to have this issue revisited, as I don't consider it fixed. Test case: a freshly booted system, X server and one full screen Gnome terminal running ``top -d 1''. [Bug 87023] Re: sudo option tty_tickets gives false sense of security due to reused pts numbers
Incidentally, I was pondering this too, after my last comment, so I'll comment on these suggestions. For GUI apps, I agree with you. It should be easy for 'kdesu' or 'gksudo' to: - Obtain needed privileges and launch the app requiring sudo privileges. - Immediately afterwards call 'sudo -K' on the appropriate pts. This should take care of the GUI side of the problem - see further though. I don't really understand how 'kdesud' is supposed to work. I suppose it just sits there for as long as kdesu is configured to remember the password given to it, and is supposed to catch further launches of 'kdesu'. (It doesn't for me, so I wonder _why_ it is launched at all, but it's a different issue.) I don't know if 'kdesud' needs the ticket at all - according to 'man kdesu' it wouldn't: The passwords are NOT written to disk, but stored in memory using a special program, kdesud. If the ticket isn't needed to implement the grace period (i.e. remembering the password for a set time) functionality in GUI sudo apps, the option --single-shot definitely sounds like a cleaner way to implement this. For the CLI, I tend to agree that your suggestions 3 and 4 seem heavy, although number 4 would probably be a good solution. I can't really say anything about suggestion 2. I came up with the same thought as your suggestion 1 also. Basically, I thought it would be useful, but while trying it out I found a serious drawback. Unfortunately, .bash_logout is only handled for _login_ shells, i.e. it is not executed for inter-active shells from Konsole. (People can also remove '~/.bash_logout', but then it's their choice. I also wondered about the case where the shell (e.g. hanged and) got terminated in an abnormal way and it couldn't execute the logout script - in this case a solution not dependent on the shell would be more reliable.) -- sudo option tty_tickets gives false sense of security due to reused pts numbers https://launchpad.net/bugs/87023 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 75557] Re: instal python-uno broken: /usr/bin/pycentral::default_runtime.remove_byte_code() : 'NoneType' object
I'm looking at debian version of this, but I think the same. The problem for me was a not-so-robust way of getting the default version of python from pyversions.py: _default_version = None def default_version(version_only=False): global _default_version if not _default_version: _default_version = link = os.readlink('/usr/bin/python') if version_only: return _default_version[6:] else: return _default_version if the /usr/bin/python symlink is the usual stuff like 'python2.4', everything's fine, but if it's something longer like '/usr/bin/python2.4' it breaks. So, it's enough to change the return _default_version[6:] onto something more flexible like: return re.match(r'.*(\d+\.\d+)', _default_version).group(1) In attachment, a patch which does exactly this. ** Attachment added: Make the default_version function more flexible http://librarian.launchpad.net/6565431/pyversions.patch -- instal python-uno broken: /usr/bin/pycentral::default_runtime.remove_byte_code() : 'NoneType' object https://launchpad.net/bugs/75557 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
