[Bug 77972] Re: mkinitramfs does not bulid a xen-friendly initrd

2007-02-28 Thread Cedric Schieli
I'm re-affecting this bug here to be sure it will not be abandonned and
it gets a sufficient audience.

Can someone confirm :
- he or she is experiencing the same problem (if using xen 3.0.3, there should
be only one fat tls warning without the name of the process, not plenty of
seg fixup warning)
- the problem does not shows up with non upstarted distros (this can be
checked in domUs)
- the problem does not shows up with upstart rebuilt with
-mno-tls-direct-seg-ref
- the problem does not shows up for any other processes then upstart ones

** Changed in: upstart (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: upstart = xen-3.0

OK, this is very similar to my own solution; I described it already in
the Launchpad.

Actually I posted many bugs until I realized that the problem was the
same. I marked duplicates and posted my solution in the other entries.
If I missed this particular bug, please excuse me.

Re: [Bug 87987] Re: mixer applet does not open

2007-02-28 Thread Jan Groenewald
Hi

On Tue, Feb 27, 2007 at 04:19:57PM -, Sebastien Bacher wrote:
Thank you for your bug. What audiosink is configured to gstreamer-
 properties?

Default Output: Autodetect. The test produces a beep. The beep is there
when I change that to any of ALSA, ESD, OSS, Custom (osssink).

Could you remove the applet from your panel, run /usr/lib
/gnome-applets/mixer_applet2 from a command line, add the applet to the
panel (it will use the instance waiting on the command line), and note
if there is any error printed?

No (just locales)

   [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$/usr/lib/gnome-applets/mixer_applet2
   (mixer_applet2:30587): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
   Using the fallback 'C' locale.

library.
   Using the fallback 'C' locale.
   (gnome-volume-control:30605): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C

It seems above the applet added from the GUI, right click on panel,
add volume control, is not mixer_applet2? This test produced an applet
that was working fine, didn't show any errors, no red cross, and it
opens a volume control when one clicks on it, which seems to work.

When I removed this from the panel he command line instance stopped.

Then I added again, without a command line instance running. It has the red
cross again. The first time I click it, it says:

The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to
control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer
plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.

You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking
the speaker icon on the panel and selecting Remove From Panel from the
menu.

Thereafter (once I closed that) it is back to the original error from
a feisty install (btw, another machine, edgy dist-upgrade to feisty, does
not do this).

No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found

Jan

Re: [Bug 84641] Re: Wireless card (Atheros) no longer detected after upgrade to kernel 2.6.17-11

2007-02-28 Thread PJJ
Thank you for the instructions. I suspected something like that.

Meanwhile, I have first removed the update to 2.6.17-11. Then installed
the restricted modules and reinstalled the update. Things are working again.

Thanks for your help.

Peter

PS: I noticed in the forum that other people encountered identical or
almost identical problems. I will post your solution as final entry on
my own post.

Stephen Drake wrote:
Sorry for the long delay, I should have subscribed earlier.

The kernel modules needed to interface with the Atheros card need to be
installed alongside the new kernel due to ABI changes.

This should be taken care of by the linux-restricted-modules package,
which depends on the latest version. For some reason this wasn't
installed (sometimes it's removed due to conflicts, such as non-free
nvidia drivers). So if you install that package you should be okay for
 future updates.

So please add that package and try to run the updates, if anything is to
be removed then cancel and check them over. Otherwise you should be okay
 to proceed.

Re: [Bug 88567] Re: firefox 2.0.0.2 not filling in username/pw on sites w/ multiple entries

2007-02-28 Thread linit
Was running firefox 2.0.0.1 and after Ubuntu upgrade to 2.0.0.2 stored
username / password combinations that have more that one entry will not
show.

i.e. http://www.yahoo.com has 2 logins for this page. 1) johndoe / pw:
test and 2)janedoe / pw:test. Prior to this update I could start
typing one the usernames and the stored password would automatically
return. Now I have no username or password returned but can still see
them in the password manager.

Any site that only has 1 username/pw entry works correctly.

Re: [Bug 68196] Re: IBM thinkpad A31p: wireless ok in 6.06, not in 6.10.

2007-02-28 Thread Niels Larsen
Yes, there is now connection. Only two little questions:

1. The interface is eth1 - shouldnt it be wlan0, as iwconfig lists it
when there is no wireless? also, the icon in the top menubar in Gnome
is not a wireless icon, and now that I am connected its tooltip says
No network connection. The other net icon says Network connection: lo

2. The default roaming mode located my net ok. But when I switched off
roaming mode and entered the WEP key (ascii) then it could not connect.
Then I switched off roaming and entered again, then success. Below is
what I got with your two last commands.

So .. nearly ok.

My list of post-install-things-to-do is getting shorter: the fonts
are smoother but still a poor selection of monospace fonts, all of
which are much better on black-on-white than white-on-black. And
too many fonts all in a long long list, good and bad together. Same
with file color schemes: they have to be adjusted according to the
window background. I always have to make directories blue background
and white foreground because I use white-on-black, for example. I,
and my fellow workers, spend all our time in Emacs, but Ubuntu does
not have a decent Emacs-setup (with harmonic subdued colors for the
most popular modes and fonts loaded) whereas for example Mandrivadrake
has. Then a question i often get is whats the difference between
[OK] button and [close] button - are the settings saved with [close]?
The prompt (which I prefer as '(\h) \w ') cannot be set under profile
it seems. Ok, i shouldnt write all this here.

Thanks for helping.

Great! now it sounds like you've got the driver working. At this point
you should be able to do

$ sudo iwconfig eth1 essid my network id

[Bug 25931] Re: Failed to initalize HAL.

2007-02-28 Thread Scott Bronson
Martin, I get this too when I have auto-login turned on in GDM. I get
the 3 error messages you mention, then hald leaks memory something
fierce (uses up all 3GB of my machine's memory in a few days).

When I turn off auto-login so I have to spend a few tens of seconds in
GDM before Gnome fires up, everything starts up without errors. I'm not
sure about the hald memory leak since I only just now figured out this
workaround.

Hopefully this will be fixed as Upstart matures.

[Bug 86617] Re: 2d sluggishness with 'nv' driver

I had a problem with sluggish graphics and the nv driver, as well,
some time ago. See bug 27919 for details on that. The problem has long
since gone away, though, so the two may be completely different issues.

Did your same computer have problems with any other Ubuntu versions? Or
other Linux distros all-together? That might be the first thing to
try...

[Bug 85575] Re: gnome-terminal reacting very sluggishly

2007-02-28 Thread Thomas Schwinge
I'd like to have this issue revisited, as I don't consider it fixed.

Test case: a freshly booted system, X server and one full screen Gnome terminal
running ``top -d 1''.

Edgy versions (`1:0.14.1-0ubuntu1') of `libvte9' and `libvte-common':
cpu running at 600 MHz and `Xorg' uses 5% cpu time. This is still too
much for my feeling, but I can certainly live with that.

However: current Feisty versions (`1:0.15.4-0ubuntu1') of `libvte9' and
`libvte-common': cpu running at 1700 MHz and `Xorg' uses 34% cpu time.

[Bug 41249] Re: hp nx6125 dies because of overheading, fan doesn't start

2007-02-28 Thread GizmoDerMokwai
** Description changed:

As I reported in several Forums to get rid of this bug: the Fan of my HP
nx6125 (and as some other user commited on there notebooks to [different
brands]) doesn't start, because i have to boot using noapic. booting without
noapic makes the notebook really slow, so that you can't use it for working.
booting with noapic doesn't start the cpu fan, so the notebooks dies because of
overheating. Only solution is to wait untin the cpu got tempurature, reboot and
then the fan starts, working all over the session in same speed.
disconnecting the notebook from powersupply stops the fan and the notebook
once again dies because of overheating.
the notebook has a amd sempron 3000+ cpu and i'm using latest 32-bit dapper
(updated via distupgrade).

- Sorry for my bad englisch, hope someone can fix that bug, because it's
- really annoying, just like my BCM43xx WLAN Adapter still isn't working.
- I hope this will be integrated in Dapper Final too.
+ EDIT: problem seems to be solved sincen edgy.

[Bug 86444] Re: g-p-m panel icon doesn't scale correctly

2007-02-28 Thread Mitja Pagon
I'm afraid the issue hasn't been resolved. The previous comment was a
false positive.

The issue seemed to be resolved because of the bug in gnome-panel, that
made the panel bigger than usual (24px), with the latest gnome-panel
update, the panel is back to normal size, but the issue with the icon is
evident again.

The bug should be reopened.

[Bug 87023] Re: sudo option tty_tickets gives false sense of security due to reused pts numbers

2007-02-28 Thread kko
Incidentally, I was pondering this too, after my last comment, so I'll
comment on these suggestions.

For GUI apps, I agree with you. It should be easy for 'kdesu' or 'gksudo' to:
- Obtain needed privileges and launch the app requiring sudo privileges.
- Immediately afterwards call 'sudo -K' on the appropriate pts.

This should take care of the GUI side of the problem - see further
though.

I don't really understand how 'kdesud' is supposed to work. I suppose it
just sits there for as long as kdesu is configured to remember the
password given to it, and is supposed to catch further launches of
'kdesu'. (It doesn't for me, so I wonder _why_ it is launched at all,
but it's a different issue.) I don't know if 'kdesud' needs the ticket
at all - according to 'man kdesu' it wouldn't: The passwords are NOT
written to disk, but stored in memory using a special program,
kdesud.

If the ticket isn't needed to implement the grace period (i.e.
remembering the password for a set time) functionality in GUI sudo apps,
the option --single-shot definitely sounds like a cleaner way to
implement this.

For the CLI, I tend to agree that your suggestions 3 and 4 seem heavy, although
number 4 would probably be a good solution. I can't really say anything about
suggestion 2.

I came up with the same thought as your suggestion 1 also. Basically, I
thought it would be useful, but while trying it out I found a serious
drawback. Unfortunately, .bash_logout is only handled for _login_
shells, i.e. it is not executed for inter-active shells from Konsole.
(People can also remove '~/.bash_logout', but then it's their choice. I
also wondered about the case where the shell (e.g. hanged and) got
terminated in an abnormal way and it couldn't execute the logout script
- in this case a solution not dependent on the shell would be more
reliable.)

[Bug 88604] passwords 8 characters cannot authenticate

2007-02-28 Thread Cafuego
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pptpd

When using pptpd with a Windows XP client, I've found users who have a
password length of greater than 8 characters in /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
are unable to authenticate successfully.

When the password is truncated in the chap-secrets file and the user
enters the new 8 character password, authentications succeeds.

I have not as yet attempted to reproduce this problem with Linux or
MacOS X clients.

If this is a feature, not a bug, it should perhaps be documented in the
sample chap-secrets file;-)

[Bug 88605] gnome-panel crashes when opening menu

2007-02-28 Thread Mark Fenton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

After upgrading from edgy to feisty the gnome panel crashes whenever the
Accessories menu is accessed. I have tracked this down to being caused
by the gnome-screenshot.desktop launcher (Attatched. This file also
crashes nautilus and the menu editor). Can someone else confirm this

[Bug 75557] Re: instal python-uno broken: /usr/bin/pycentral::default_runtime.remove_byte_code() : 'NoneType' object

2007-02-28 Thread RedGlow
I'm looking at debian version of this, but I think the same. The problem
for me was a not-so-robust way of getting the default version of python
from pyversions.py:

_default_version = None
def default_version(version_only=False):
global _default_version
if not _default_version:
_default_version = link = os.readlink('/usr/bin/python')
if version_only:
return _default_version[6:]
else:
return _default_version

if the /usr/bin/python symlink is the usual stuff like 'python2.4',
everything's fine, but if it's something longer like '/usr/bin/python2.4' it
breaks. So, it's enough to change the return _default_version[6:] onto
something more flexible like:

return re.match(r'.*(\d+\.\d+)', _default_version).group(1)

In attachment, a patch which does exactly this.
