[Bug 78171] Re: Crash after editing file
I could not reproduce the bug on my system (Edubuntu 6.10, gnome 2.16.1, kernel 2.6.17-11-386) I tried the following steps: 1. Created a .c file in geany. 2. Added some content and saved it. 3. Opened the same file in gedit, edited (added a line) and saved it. 4. Opened this file in geany. -- Crash after editing file https://launchpad.net/bugs/78171 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 92171] Re: Sound incredibly quiet, alsamixer broken after kernel upgrade
** Description changed: I'm currently running Feisty on a Toshiba Satellite A100, which uses the snd-hda-intel ALSA driver. After upgrading from 2.6.20-8-generic to 2.6.20-9-generic, the sound is an order of magnitude quieter; turning both the hardware and software volume controls up to maximum gives a barely-audible whisper. When viewing alsamixer, several sliders are missing or inactive, including the master slider (which merely has an on/mute switch instead of an adjustable sound level). - From what I can see, the 2.6.20-10 upgrade still contains the broken + From what I can see, the 2.6.20-11 upgrade still contains the broken driver. Aside from the odd crackle when using SDL_mixer/OpenAL applications, 2.6.20-8 had no problems handling the sound card. -- Sound incredibly quiet, alsamixer broken after kernel upgrade https://launchpad.net/bugs/92171 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 92428] Re: Feisty Fawn update loses access to root admin privelages
I believe this can be classified as resolved; at least for the open source community :) The proprietary NVIDIA driver, changes the script of certain files that were remodified to their new defaults, by the update process; but only slightly. It appears that for some unexplained (as of yet) reason, this faulting of ownership of files, leads to the non Ubuntu standard (but still open source in nature) program - VirtualBox - to hang the /etc/group file and destroy it. But ONLY if VirtualBox is running during the update process! At least with my particular setup. I should also note here that the NVIDIA driver is the latest experimental release; and that at time of download for use with my system, my card was not listed as being supported...(it works; but is not supported)... When prompted during update (with VirtualBox running), if I want to keep my modified /etc/X11/xorg.conf file or update to the new settings is when things hung for me. Just error and continue install of the rest of the updates, no chance to accept or deny changing of xorg.conf file (VirtualBox crashes at this point as well). If not running VirtualBox during update, everything goes smooth as butter; well, except having to restart after updates complete, and reinstall the skipped xorg update caused by the modifications by the NVIDIA driver install! So this can probably be summed up as a PEBKAC bug. (Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair) - In that DO NOT run other applications while installing 200+ updates! And - DO NOT buy proprietary coded video cards! LOL If NVIDIA had open source drivers, I would more than likely never had this problem; as they would not have caused such a ruckus during update times! The previous errors mentioned in my original posting were from the NVIDIA driver as well, but before this, they always worked themselves out... upon restart. Again, Thank You BRIAN - YOU ROCK! I wrote a nice posting on my Blog about my experience as well! If I should not post my blog link here, please be kind and edit it out and post to me that it is not allowed. I do not want to get kicked off, as I would love to stick around and take my knowledge of Linux to the GURU- elevation! blog url: http://www.foxholeunderground.com Thanks; Jeremy Riley -- Feisty Fawn update loses access to root admin privelages https://launchpad.net/bugs/92428 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 92924] Re: gdm/xorg problem
I tried replacing gdm with kdm. It didn't really change much, but kdm shows the following error within the font failures: ../../src/xcb_lock.c:28: _XCBUnlockDisplay: Assertion `xcb_get_request_sent(dpy-xcb-connection) == dpy-request' failed. I've had problems with libxcb-xlib before so I installed source and build all deb files belonging to it and overwrote the existing with the new files. No effect though. I then 'apt-get remove xserver-xorg' and 'apt-get autoremove' and installed xserver-xorg again afterwards. I had to reinstall nvidia-glx as well. Hello ! In GNOME, it just says Disconnected ... I see the picture of 2 screens on top right of my screen (with an attention mark), with the bar that should be green which is orange. [Bug 92715] Re: Why not use 5.11
well thank you for my introduction by example to Debian/Ubuntu package management. I am using 5.11 via checksintall - I know this is a far cry from a more formal diff and patches etc. but for personal use it works well. I am interested in trying to work on packages in Ubuntu that I am interested in, like Maxima. I build the latest Maxima for myself when it comes out so the reason you have just mentioned is personally of little use. I thought that if I am doing this for myself I should try and be a part of Ubuntu/Debian and try and make a tiny contribution to a program I really like. [Bug 24828] Re: IPv6 should be disabled by default
I see a solution to this bug. In my opinion, if you need ipv6, your ISP will warn you, and you will know. So, the solution could be blacklisting ipv6 by default, and putting a checkbox in system/administration/network/general to enable it (the module can be loaded on the fly I suppose, so there would even be no need to reboot). I could be happy with enabling it by default, too, but with the same checkbox ready there. [Bug 93034] network-admin freezes when /etc/network/interfaces is missing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools If you erase /etc/network/interfaces network-admin freezes on startup. I believe network-admin should deal with this error condition by creating a new interfaces file containing at least entries for the loopback device. Don't know if it should try also to create entries for the other devices found, as this could interact badly with network-manager. ** Affects: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- network-admin freezes when /etc/network/interfaces is missing https://launchpad.net/bugs/93034 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [ubuntu-science] [Bug 92715] Re: Why not use 5.11
Le Sat, Mar 17, 2007 at 08:34:45AM -, yigal.weinstein a écrit : well thank you for my introduction by example to Debian/Ubuntu package management. I am using 5.11 via checksintall - I know this is a far cry from a more formal diff and patches etc. but for personal use it works well. Hi, now I understand why there were misunderstandings: in our discusison, we were not thinking about the same tools. Debian and Ubuntu generate their binary packages from source packages, whereas chechkinstall produces binary packages simply from upstream sources. As you said, checkinstall works for a personal usage, but more complex tools are needed at a distribution level. For instance, in order to ensure quality, there needs some tracability. With checkinstall, one loses this, but by using a source package which one updates at each upstream release, one can have things such as the following changelog: http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/universe/m/maxima/maxima_5.10.0-6ubuntu1/changelog There many other reasons for which a package made with checkinstall can not be accepted in a distribution. However, there are many other ways to help, and some of them do not require a deep knowledge of packaging. If you want to contribute to Ubuntu, a good entry point is the ubuntu-science mailing list (through which read your bug report). If they do not give you enough work there, you can also try the debian-science mailing list ;) http://lists.tauware.de/listinfo/ubuntu-science http://lists.debian.org/debian-science/ Have a nice day, -- Charles Plessy http://charles.plessy.org Wako, Saitama, Japan -- Why not use 5.11 https://launchpad.net/bugs/92715 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
