[Bug 62002] Re: [i945] Installer X server startup fails

2007-06-08 Thread Juan Pablo Salazar Bertín
It's supposed to be fixed in 1:7.2-3ubuntu1. I'm testing Gutsy Tribe 1 and the
bug is still present (using version 1:7.2-3ubuntu3).
Since intel driver is included, there are two workarounds:

1) Change i810 to intel.
2) Write sync ranges and use i810 + 915resolution for widescreen resolutions.

Since my laptop has widescreen, I prefer workaround #1, but every time I
use sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg, the driver is changed
back to i810 and no sync ranges are written in xorg.conf.

Re: [Bug 104982] Re: [apport] gnome-app-install crashed with ImportError in module()

2007-06-08 Thread girafales

I have installed Kubuntu Feisty again. Problems with this application happened
to me also with the earlier installation. I am a newbie to Linux but it's kind
of annoying these problems with adept as one is cut afterwards from all package
updates (except one is a Linux geek and knows how to handle it).
I annexed the saved print screen but doubt that it's useful for you. This
message I got also after rebooting. So adept in my case was not running at all
anymore.

best regards

Henry

[Bug 118397] Re: checkfs fails at startup while trying to check /dev/.tmp-XXX

2007-06-08 Thread Marc Poulhiès
I don't have skills/time to have a look into e2fsprog, but I know that
this computer worked perfectly for nearly one year, and then, it has
started to fail at boot with this error... So I guess there is a way to
avoid this race... Maybe I'll try to track changes in e2fsprog package
and downgrade it. The last solution is simply to hack
/etc/init.d/checkfs in order to skip this (and f-e only check known
disks).

 I think this is really related because the bug seems to happen, at least
 in my case, with the fnctl system call (file locking), which has
 different semantics on nfs than on local fs (nfs 2 and 3 do not support
 file loking through the call at all, I think, but I know nothing about
 nfs internals...)

I don't know much about scim internals, but I doubt it does locking in
the home directory (the only files it access should be ~/.scim/global
and ~/.scim/config).

I am starting to wonder if this is a bug in anthy instead of scim.
Maybe you guys can test scim-prime/scim-skk/scim-canna/scim-tables-ja
and see if the same bug happens?

[Bug 119267] apport patches for CORE_REAL_RLIM and limit overriding do not work any more

2007-06-08 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

I cannot get apport to work on 2.6.22-6.13. There is no data passed, the
core dumps are 0 empty by default, and CORE_REAL_RLIM is always -1.

Let's create a crash hook and enable it:

$ echo -e '#!/bin/sh\nenv /tmp/env\ncat /tmp/crash'  /tmp/hook
$ chmod 755 /tmp/hook
$ echo '|/tmp/hook' | sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern

For the default ulimit 0:

$ ulimit -c
0
$ bash -c 'kill -SEGV $$'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
$ ls -l /tmp/env /tmp/crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   0 2007-06-08 08:25 /tmp/crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 145 2007-06-08 08:25 /tmp/env
$ grep RLIM /tmp/env
CORE_REAL_RLIM=-1

In this case, CORE_REAL_RLIM should be 0 (since -1 means 'unlimited')
and /tmp/crash should have the entire core dump (but is empty).

For unlimited it works fine:

$ ulimit -S -c unlimited
$ bash -c 'kill -SEGV $$'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
$ ls -l /tmp/env /tmp/crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 905216 2007-06-08 08:28 /tmp/crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root145 2007-06-08 08:28 /tmp/env
$ grep RLIM /tmp/env
CORE_REAL_RLIM=-1

For a large limit, the core dump works, but CORE_REAL_RLIM is not
correctly set:

$ ulimit -S -c 5000
$ bash -c 'kill -SEGV $$'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
$ ls -l /tmp/env /tmp/crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 909312 2007-06-08 08:30 /tmp/crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root145 2007-06-08 08:30 /tmp/env
$ grep RLIM /tmp/env
CORE_REAL_RLIM=-1

For a small ulimit, the core dump s correctly capped, but CORE_REAL_RLIM
is still -1:

$ ulimit -S -c 50
$ bash -c 'kill -SEGV $$'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
$ ls -l /tmp/env /tmp/crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 53248 2007-06-08 08:31 /tmp/crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   145 2007-06-08 08:31 /tmp/env
$ grep RLIM /tmp/env
CORE_REAL_RLIM=-1

The empty core dump with 0 ulimit breaks apport in the default case, and
the wrongly set CORE_REAL_RLIM breaks correct writing of core files by
apport.

Thanks in advance!

At least in my case, it showed similar buggy behaviour for any plugin I
threw at scim, including scim-tables-ja, scim-canna, etc... and at the
exact same function call (see my initial bug report).

cheers,

David

Re: [Bug 119075] Re: Root password policy for mysql

2007-06-08 Thread Ante Karamatić
Caspar Clemens Mierau wrote:

 1. Are there any other applications where random passwords are set (that
 you need)?

Yes, mysql. People are unaware of this, but there is another root user
in mysql wich has random password. Check /etc/mysql/debian.cnf.

 2. MySQL by default does not listen on a (remote) network interface.

Not directly, but that's not important. Local non-root user can destroy
databases and local user can set up a service wich would allow remote
users to connect to local mysql as root, again making possible to
destroy mysql databases.

 3. I cannot name one distribution that sets a random password to mysql,
 this would lead to a lot of questions.

You can - Debian. I didn't check others.

 4. You need to store it somewhere on the disk.

As said - /etc/mysql/debian.cnf

 I therefore still prefer offering a script using the skip-stuff, be it
 in an init script or not. It could of course also be a /usr/sbin or
 /usr/local/sbin script named mysql_set_rootpass or something like
 this. Such script could also be easily given back to the debian project.
 If you still want to warn the user you could check the mysql password on
 start (starting mysql ... mysql has no password set ... please do xyz)
 which could be stopped by setting a flag in a config script.

Script/program that overrides root password is something every mysql has
for years now. There is nothing special we have to develop. init script
already uses debian-sys-maint mysql account for checking status of
mysqld, stoping it and doing reload. Adding 'reset_password' should be
fairly easy.

We should take a look if it is possible to change root password with
mysqladmin, authenticated as debian-sys-maint user. If that's possible,
adding random password to root and changing it's pass with mysqladmin
trough init script should be trivial.

[Bug 116326] Re: No audio INTEL HD audio - Realtek ALC268 codec - Toshiba A205-S4577

2007-06-08 Thread Mark Lockwood
I bought a Toshiba A205-S4577 and I've been trying to get the sound
working for the past couple of days.

I went to Chris Cheney's link

http://hg.alsa-project.org/alsa-kernel/rev/dd701601157b

and applied the patch_realtek.c to ALSA 1.0.14, compiled it for hda-
intel and installed it. If I specify 3stack for the model as a module
parameter, PCM doesn't show up in the mixer, so model=auto seems to work
best, but alas I still don't have sound even with this new patch
supporting 268.

Would there be any additional technical differences between the
Toshiba's configuration that would still prevent sound from working?
This is very frustrating since everything else on this laptop is working
flawlessly in Ubuntu.

[Bug 86666] Re: Feisty crashes after grub if usplash enabled (amd64)

2007-06-08 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Like the title says, this is about Feisty crashes after grub if usplash
enabled (amd64). This has nothing to do with X.org, or problems with
X.org drivers, or non-amd64 machines. It seems it's limited to ATI's
R420/R423 cards (X800-series), though there was a mention about nvidia
GeForce Go 6100 + 32-bit but indeed it might good to have a different
bug for it.

The known workarounds include removing the splash parameter from the
kernel boot line, or adding, for example, vga=792 parameter with which
you don't need to be without splash screen either.

Please do not add further comments unless you have eg. a patch which
fixes the problem, or some new information about this specific problem
that is not covered in the tens of earlier messages.

** Summary changed:

- Feisty crashes after grub if usplash enabled (amd64)
+ Feisty crashes after grub, before boot process, if usplash is nabled (amd64)

[Bug 119271] MySQL relay logs are saved in volatile filesystem /var/run

2007-06-08 Thread David Leadbeater
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.0

When using replication the MySQL relay logs are saved under /var/run, as
this is a tmpfs filesystem it can fill up and replication will stop
working (also I think this might affect recovery in the case of a system
crash).

A default like:
relay-log=/var/log/mysql/mysqld-relay-bin.nn

[Bug 8896] Re: enable auto-install of recommends by default

2007-06-08 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
Henrik Nilsen Omma said on 2007-04-03: (permalink)
 The debate auto-install of recommends is more of a policy issue than a bug.

It's not a policy issue - why main debian/ubuntu package manager,
aptitude, installs recommended packages as default, but synaptic
doesn't ? Please don't close this bug until it will be really fixed in
synaptic.

There is no need for discuss about instaling recommended packages by default -
all needed info about recommends field is in Debian policy:
( http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-relationships.html#s-binarydeps ):

The Recommends field should list packages that would be found together with this
one in *all* but unusual installations.

[Bug 119267] Re: apport patches for CORE_REAL_RLIM and limit overriding do not work any more

2007-06-08 Thread Martin Pitt
BTW, just for the records,

  /usr/share/apport/testsuite/test-apport kernel

checks all this. On Feisty it runs through without errors (/var/crash/
must be empty before). On gutsy it errors out immediately.

[Bug 119267] Re: apport patches for CORE_REAL_RLIM and limit overriding do not work any more

2007-06-08 Thread Martin Pitt
For comparison, this is how it looks like on 2.6.20:

$ ulimit -c
0
$ bash -c 'kill -SEGV $$'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
$ ls -l /tmp/env /tmp/crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 909312 2007-06-08 08:45 /tmp/crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root143 2007-06-08 08:45 /tmp/env
$ grep RLIM /tmp/env
CORE_REAL_RLIM=0

So by default the entire core dump is piped and CORE_REAL_RLIM is 0.

For 'ulimit -S -c 50', CORE_REAL_RLIM is 51200. 2.6.20 does not cap the
piped core dump to 50 KB as the current 2.6.22 seems to do; this is
correct behaviour since we want the entire core dump for apport, we just
want to clip the written core files to 50 KB.

 At least in my case, it showed similar buggy behaviour for any plugin I
 threw at scim, including scim-tables-ja, scim-canna, etc... and at the
 exact same function call (see my initial bug report).

I see. In that case this bug probably should be reassigned to scim from
scim-anthy. It's not likely to help solving this bug though, so I'll
wait until I see any duplicates.

[Bug 119267] Re: apport patches for CORE_REAL_RLIM and limit overriding do not work any more

2007-06-08 Thread Martin Pitt
I think I found the possible culprit in

  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-
gutsy.git;a=blob;h=f9e8f6f87008cc519073282ed66787c528b65665;hb=36c1aeac3968fa6ea0899e2c619a5c69a4350b52;f=fs/exec.c#l1545

It says if (corename[0] == '|') { and overrides the limit if true.
However, corename is a local variable in do_coredump() and does not get
initialized before line 1567. Thus Line 1545 should be

  if (core_pattern[0] == '|') {

What is this bug about? Is this bug about starting up an AMD64 system

starting up an AMD64 system with an ATI/NVIDIA card and not seeing
usplash/progress output but after waiting the appropriate amount of time
X starts as normal (i.e. no kernel crash)?

[Bug 109693] Re: amaya depends on msttcorefonts

2007-06-08 Thread Emmet Hikory
I've unsubscribed ubuntu-universe-sponsors as the submitted debdiff was
not uploaded after review by a sponsor. Please resubscribe when a new
candidate revision to address this issue is prepared.

Separately, in general, truetype fonts are arranged such that fonts are
found in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/pkgname/fontname. Feel free to use
any font appearing in universe - only the fonts in restricted or
multiverse will cause issues. For me the easiest way to check in
which component a package is found is `apt-cache madison $package`, but
`aptitude show $package` also provides this information (in Section:
amaya is universe/web, and therefore in universe).

[Bug 51551] Re: newusers uses crypt insted of md5

2007-06-08 Thread Xeno Campanoli
I guess I could mention that I got the comment about $1$ from the shadow
man page. the newusers man page describes the input file being just
like a passwd file entry with a few things left out, but all the columns
there. That's probably all that's needed to repro this from the
interface viewpoint. pam.d does have a newusers entry on my system:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/pam.d# cat newusers
# The PAM configuration file for the Shadow 'newusers' service
#

# This allows root to add users with a batch file without being
# prompted for a password
authsufficient  pam_rootok.so

# checks for account validity
account requiredpam_permit.so

[Bug 119272] VIA Rhine doesn't have MMIO and NAPI enabled

2007-06-08 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu have MMIO and NAPI disabled for VIA Rhine network cards.

MMIO and NAPI should improve performance considerably. And as far as I'm
aware, these aren't experimental anymore?

So can these be enabled be default?

[Bug 118397] Re: checkfs fails at startup while trying to check /dev/.tmp-XXX

2007-06-08 Thread tonfa
Wow, that's hackish :) maybe you could first try to add a sleep 5 or
something in /etc/init.d/checkfs.sh to avoid the race.

In my opinion it can come from either udev, the kernel, or upstart. The
clean solution would be to make sure that udev settles down before
starting checkfs.

I'm not sure if rejected is right. Perhaps fixed. Anyway, we seem to
have confirmed that it's no longer a problem in Feisty. Please feel
welcome to change the status if I've done it wrong.

[Bug 118015] Re: (fix provided) Feisty can't reboot after adding p4-clockmod to /etc/modules

2007-06-08 Thread Daniel Gimpelevich
Reviewing the changelog, it seems this bug was introduced in Edgy Eft
6.10, and does not affect Dapper Drake 6.06 after all. I failed to
confirm the T20 as also affected corrected this way, but may yet do so
on a Sony Vaio. An update should be pushed out to both Edgy and Feisty
reversing the change of 2006-07-20 and version 0.97-1ubuntu2. How do I
un-nominate the bug for the Dapper release?

OK, thanks!
But just for my education, how are you guys working with debian,
do you have any maillist, indicating new debian package,
or look through some web resource?

Is there any ubuntu wiki about cooperation with debian?
