[Bug 127927] Re: [Gutsy Tribe 3 Kubuntu 7.10 LiveCD] /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

2007-08-01 Thread Paul Dufresne
Hi! Thank you for taking time to report this bug and help us make Ubuntu become
better.
It took me a while to realize that you were able to type commands after the
message can't access tty, job control turned off.
It is important to understand that this message come for many many different
errors.
I have actually open a new bug about this message: bug #129612.

Rather than typing 'modprobe ata_piix; exit' I would suggest you type:
cat /var/log/casper.log and looks for error message.
(Actually, the real error message have probably be shown on screen, just a bit
before the can't access tty, job control turned off)
This is the real problem that need to be fixed and caused busybox (just a shell
to type commands) to be called because the
system was not able to continue loading normally.

Hi out there!

I logged an strace when running with or without latest libgtk-2.xy and

[Bug 129612] Re: busybox: can't access tty; job control turned off

2007-08-01 Thread Paul Dufresne
Well, by reading bug #118561 I now realize that actually, the prompt is shown
and working, making this bug pretty
low priority. (Make a lot confusion however).

So, as I understand, it seems best to ask people to 'cat /var/log/casper.log'
and report unusual error in the result.
A bug suggest the following procedure to allow to mount a USB disk to copy
casper.log (from bug #62679):
---
Please do:
set -x
. /scripts/casper
mountroot
and provide the output.

you should be able to connect and mount USB devices just fine at this stage.

I can confirm that on Ubunutu, USB keys behave as reported by Hugh. I

[Bug 129628] package libarts1-akode is missing final newline

2007-08-01 Thread James A. Pattie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libarts1-akode

trying to apply the available updates on my 7.10 beta install I'm
getting:

(Reading database ... dpkg: error processing

So I've tried to re-install the affected package and get the same error.
It is a show stopper, since the package is already installed and I'm
getting this while trying to upgrade/install the other packages that
want to be installed. Using the adept updater just fails with other
issues which is why I'm trying things at the command line for now.

[Bug 128228] Re: [regression] secure card reader don't work with 2.6.22-x

2007-08-01 Thread Paul Dufresne
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better.
I am sure things will be clearer if we begin to treat each device separately.
So, let's make this bug report about Kobil device.
Please open a new bug report about Reiner SCT device and post the number of the
newly created bug here.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already
done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by
the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command uname -a in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command dmesg dmesg.log and attach the resulting file
dmesg.log to this bug report.
3. Please run the command sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log and attach the
resulting file lspci-vvnn.log to this bug report.
[And added by me:]
4. Please run the command lsusb -v lsusb.log and attach the resulting file
lsusb.log to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 126425] Re: [Fixed] Intel driver (using EXA) crashes system when starting compiz

2007-08-01 Thread Bryce Harrington
I'm going to hold off on dropping this patch until I have a better
understanding of why it was added in the first place, since I would
assume it was added because some people experience issues without it.
Timo remarked that he had attempted to drop a number of patches
including this one for the Feisty release, but ended up restoring them
due to issues found. So I assume the issue this fixes is still present.
However, perhaps if further research is done we can explore dropping it
for Gutsy+1.

Also, it sounds as if xserver 1.4 is right around the corner, so it is
also possible that contains a better fix. After that has been
incorporated into Ubuntu it would be worthwhile to re-test this bug.

[Bug 129630] [feature-request-gutsy] Include managesieve patch in dovecot

2007-08-01 Thread Christian Roessner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dovecot-common

Please read this taken from:
http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-March/021130.html

[...]
Hello dovecot users,

I have updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to apply and compile against
dovecot 1.0.rc28. Not much has changed with respect to the functionality
of the previous version however:

ChangeLog vs v2
- Updated source to compile with dovecot 1.0.rc28, tested with rc27
   (debian package)
- Daemon now uses the same location for .dovecot.sieve as dovecot-lda
   This is typically ~/.dovecot.sieve.
- If .dovecot.sieve is a regular file, it is now moved into the script
storage as dovecot.orig.sieve, preventing deletion of (important)
active scripts upon managesieve installation. Otherwise, it would
simply be replaced by a symlink to the new active script.
- Changed error handling to yield a BYE message when the managesieve
daemon exits unexpectedly (upon login) before any commands are
entered. Horde-ingo would wait indefinitely for a response.

This patch still includes (yet another) instance of the CMU Sieve
source, as explained in my previous mail
(http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-July/015016.html).

It can be downloaded at:

http://sinas.rename-
it.nl/~sirius/dovecot-1.0.rc28-MANAGESIEVE-v3.diff.gz

Have fun testing the patch. Notify me when there are problems.
[...]

So this would be really good to have, because the pysievd, which could
be an alternative does not really do a good job here.

Kind regards

Christian

[Bug 129631] Firefox differs from Mozilla version in Feisty, Edgy

2007-08-01 Thread Elias Aarnio
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

There is a dissimilarity between the Ubuntu (and Debian) versions of
Firefox (IceWeasel) and the original Mozilla binary.

Symptom: There is a map service at
http://80.248.160.121/vakkasuomi.paikkatietopalvelu/
The page generates only a failure message in Finnish. The page cannot be opened
with Firefox versions packaged with Feisty or Egdy. This has been tested with
running LiveCD-versions (Feisty, Edgy) and desktop installations (Feisty). The
version used in desktop testing is 2.0.0.5

The odd thing is that the service on the page mentioned above works with
the Firefox 2.0.0.5 binary downloaded from the Mozilla pages on the same
platform where the Ubuntu version does not work. This has been tested in
Feisty. I tested I tested with Debian 40r0, too: it does not work.

The problem is not Java related. Some functionalities of the service require
Java but the map view should open even if Java is not installed. When trying to
open with Feisty or Edgy the contents of the page is not opened enough to
launch a Java console that pops up OK on other occasions.

This problem seems to be inexistent in RPM-based distributions: everyone I
asked says the page is working. The page also works with Gutsy test version and
Dapper.

It seems there is something both in Ubuntu and Debian FF packages that
differs from the Mozilla binaries in such a way that the map service
(link above) does not work. My concern is to get this public service
usable for Ubuntu users.

Well that option is probably used by very few webpages.

Other browsers seem not to be affected.

And I'm not using Firefox, but Epiphany, so firebug is not an option.

Re: [Bug 128384] Re: Instant messaging documentation doesn't cover useful topics

2007-08-01 Thread Matthew East

* Matthew Paul Thomas:
Information about setting up Pidgin should be in the help accessed from
Pidgin's Help menu, which is not part of ubuntu-docs. Information about
setting up an Ekiga account should be in the help accessed from Ekiga's
Help menu, which is not part of ubuntu-docs. And so on. Putting this
information in Ubuntu Help, rather than the program's own help, would
make it unnecessarily difficult to find. (It would also limit its reach
to Ubuntu users, when it would do more good if available to *all* users
 of that particular program).

Agreed. In the case of Ekiga and Pidgin, both have manuals accessed
through the help system, so including links in the relevant section is
the best way to proceed.

[Bug 118214] Re: Please don't use the 'ddeb' extension; make it plain old 'deb' instead.

2007-08-01 Thread Martin Pitt
The reason why we named them .ddeb was to *avoid* getting them into the
main archive. It would make mirrors explode, as well as doubling the
size of Packages.gz.

The long-term goal is to get them into a separate archive (such as
dbgsym.ubuntu.com).

[Bug 129635] OpenOffice.org programs fail to start - stuck at splash screen and using 100% CPU

2007-08-01 Thread Oded Arbel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When starting an open office program (I tried oowriter, oocalc, ooimpres
and ooffice), the program never starts successfully - instead it gets
stuck at the splash screen stage.

The splash screen appears and the blue progress bar reaches 100% and
then OpenOffice.org just stays that way and never completes the load,
while consuming 100% CPU - in the gnome-system-monitor I can see that
soffice.bin is taking up all the CPU. At this point the computer is very
sluggish and even the cursor moving slowly.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 alpha 1 updated using apt-get dist-upgrade daily.
I've installed it instead of Fedora Core 7 - I formatted all the
partitions except /home, and I've tested the same behavior with old
users from the previous installation as well as with users created after
the Ubuntu install.

I'm using the nvidia driver from the restricted driver manager with
desktop effects enabled (if it makes any difference).

Currently, OpenOffice.org is unusable and its a serious problem for me.

[Bug 121187] Re: E1000 driver for 82562V-2 (8086:10c0) device

2007-08-01 Thread Martin Pitt
Ah, so the reason was that the packages were still in NEW, sorry. I just
accepted them.

However, Tim, that means that you can't possibly have tested the feisty-
proposed packages, since they did not exist yet. Can you please test the
actual packages? Thank you!

[Bug 129189] Re: Instant Messaging Documentation: News Readers need more details

2007-08-01 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Help on how to set up feeds in Liferea is already present in Liferea's
help. If you want to improve Liferea's help, that would be excellent
(for example, how to make Firefox's Subscribe button work with Liferea
is not at all obvious), but that's nothing to do with ubuntu-docs.

[Bug 129383] Re: Slow CD ripping (Sound Juicer)

2007-08-01 Thread paulmd
Some more notes: Ripping in MP3/OGG is much slower than WAV or FLAC (2x
slower).

wav and flac rip at 2.8x vs ogg at 1.5x, Perhaps the part of the problem
is in the encoding phase.

Note that ripping with k3b does no better (a common dependency?). But
3x on a machine that can do 20x is a problem.

[Bug 110925] Re: Album art does not reposition itself crrectly after the panes are resized

2007-08-01 Thread Dennis Laumen
Just a guess here but the only bugworthy behaviour I can find in this
particular part of Rhythmbox is the unknown album art-SVG which
doesn't scale when resizing the sidebar in the application.

Reproduce:
 - Play a track without album art.
 - The SVG looks fine.
 - Resize the sidebar so the SVG is enlarged.
 - The SVG looks horrible.
 - Play another track without album art (don't change the size of the sidebar).
 - The SVG looks fine.

[Bug 127827] Re: [gutsy] desktop i386 tribe-3 normal icons very big font size

2007-08-01 Thread Paul Dufresne
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW]
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in xserver-xorg-video-intel.

I marked this as Confirmed, since you seems to have pin-point the problem.
I may eventually try it myself, as I have a 845GZ chipset based motherboard, I
would just have to download XUbuntu.
