[Bug 147463] Booting into tty1 instead of tty7

2007-09-30 Thread Justin Wetherell
Public bug reported:

Installed Gutsy yesterday on my E1505n (which came direct from Dell with
Ubuntu on it). After installing and reboot the default tty is 1 instead
of 7. I have to do a ctrl-alt-7, to get to the Desktop.

I also get an oem-config-dm error on tty1 and a Xserver failed to start
error. oem-config doesn't seem to be running but Xserver is up and
running.

[Bug 147464] Heavy network activity (torrent/nfs file transfers) causes Hard System Locks and/or Network Freezes.

2007-09-30 Thread Jonathan Smith
Public bug reported:

Simply downloading a torrent at high speed (speed caps mitigate this
somewhat) or transferring large files at high data rates over a network
(for instance transfering files to NFS mounts as some users have
reported) for any period of time longer than a few minutes may cause one
of two conditions to occur:

1) The system Hard Locks (no i/o response from keyboard or mouse and the
display manager freezes) and needs a hard reboot.
2) The network connection freezes, but still identifies itself as having a
signal and being connected. The only way I could determine to fix this was to
soft-reboot the system.

This is basically a complete show-stopper bug as these are common
activities.

More information:
Processor: Athlon XP 2000+
#RAM: 1GB

[Bug 147465] Installing software from two disks, CD tray won't open

2007-09-30 Thread bereanone
Public bug reported:

When installing several different programs on my HP Pavillion Laptop
using Gutsy Beta, in both cases when the Wine installer prompted for the
second disk, the drive neither opened on its own, nor would it open when
the cd tray button was pushed. In order to get the drive to open I
used a paper clip to open the drive through the emergency access hole.
In the first case, the software tolerated it, but in the second I got
an error message from Gutsy and the software install stopped
inapropriatly. I believe that the cd tray should recognize that the
eject button was pushed.

[Bug 22930] Re: Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it

2007-09-30 Thread nullack
Looks as though this bug has been around since 2001. Sadly it retains an
upstream priority of normal which ignores the very serious impact it has
on Ubuntu first impressions and greatly highlights one of the problems
with FOSS.

Given what has been a very poor track record on this bug why doesnt
Canonical do a workaround for this bug so the installer atleast is not
effected. I noticed the following in the upstream bug discussion:

For what it's worth, developers can work around this bug by simply
hiding/showing the button after they make the button sensitive again.
This will too fast for the user to see, and it will allow them to click
the button without moving their mouse from the button.

[Bug 120285] Re: Superblock not read at boot

2007-09-30 Thread Bananabob
Well here we go again! This morning when I powered up my PC i had the following
problems
1 - USB (I-pod) device would not automount.
so I rebooted with a shutdown -r now
2. had 3 trys at this because of all the problems noted in previous entries
3. Then I had no menus from the gnome toolbar and the shutdown command was not
found
So I hit the reset switch
4. Back to USB (I-pod) device would not automount.
So once again I issued a shutdown -r now

Ahhh. it works now.

Is anyone looking into this problem?

[Bug 86426] Re: MASTER: [Feisty] Evolution always tries to print A4

2007-09-30 Thread hggdh
Yes, it is in Feisty, but the fix for the A4 (and other) printing issues
has also changed gtkhtml3.14. So, simply backporting Evolution will not
do the trick: we also need to backport gtkhtml3.14.

On the other hand,... it seems gtkhtml3.14 is only used by Evo, so this
would be a no-brainer. The real problem is checking if the Evo fix can
be backported to 2.10.

Re: [Bug 147354] Re: Outstanding bugs in Gutsy Beta

2007-09-30 Thread rhY
Thanks for the advice. I will start posting the 100 bugs in Gutsy one
at a time. *sigh* Off I go to Launchpad!

rhY

Thank you for your comments, and for trying to help make Ubuntu better.
However, these reports are not useful in their current state. Bug
reports really should have 1 bug per report - that way we can easily
assign the bug report to the appropriate place, and monitor it's
progress. Furthermore, the issues you raise don't have sufficient
detail for someone to fix them at this point.

To address some of your problems:
 (1) It seems that you have installed the xserver-xgl package. This means
that you will be using the Xgl server, and so glxinfo will return direct
rendering: no. This is not a bug, and does not indicate that you don't have
3d acceleration. Wine does not detect the available 3d acceleration under
Xgl. This is a bug in wine, and sadly the wine developers aren't very
interested in fixing it. There does seem to be an Xgl bug here, though,
since 3D performance under Xgl should not be significantly worse than under
standard Xorg. Could you please file a bug against the xserver-xgl package,
with information about your 3d card and driver setup?
 https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xgl/+filebug

 (2) MP3 encoding technology is patented, and these patents are actively
enforced; we cannot include this out of the box.

 (3) I have no experience of, sorry.

 (4) There is a camera wizard when cameras are plugged in. That you
didn't see one suggests that your camera is not yet supported. Could
you please file a bug with the details of your camera?

 (5) Is possibly a consequence of (1), at least the Wine part. Problems
with the various emulators should be filed as bugs against the packages
 they come in.

 (6) Again, bugs in compiz should be filed against the compiz package
 https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+filebug. This
seems to be a problem with your setup, however, becuase it *should* work
 :)

Since it is not possible to use this bug as it is written, I'm marking
it as invalid. This doesn't mean that I'm dismissing your problems,
just that, as they are presented here, it is not possible to fix them.
If you need any help in filing a bug report that we will be able to use,
 please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs, ask in
#ubuntu-bugs on IRC, or ask in another comment to this bug.

[Bug 105881] Re: acer_acpi [Needs packaging]

2007-09-30 Thread Panayiotis
Olivier, what part of the packaging process are you having trouble with?
I have put together an *experimental* package (one of my first too, definitely
*not* done in the right way :-) ).

Try at your own risk!
At the very least you should:
a) be running feisty on amd64 with kernel 2.6.20-16-generic (I haven't made
other versions yet).
b) have completely removed acer_acpi in case it was manually installed.
c) have backed-up /etc/modules (the package is supposed to do that
automatically but you never know...) and know how to restore it in an
installation that doesn't boot.
d) feel comfortable with removing the package manually in case it refuses to
uninstall on its own. This shouldn't happen but if it does you may have to edit
/var/lib/dpkg/info/acer-acpi*.(post|pre)rm.

Oh, and you may want to edit /etc/modprobe.d/acer_acpi.

acer-acpi-2.6.20-16-generic
from
deb http://panayk.boldlygoingnowhere.org/apt feisty-testing free
with key
http://panayk.boldlygoingnowhere.org/apt/repo.key

or the attachment.

[Bug 103297] Re: Kernel updater doesn't update grub's menu, lst correctly

Same kind of thing here.

Every time the kernel updates (only as of the last couple of months) it
puts my Ubuntu down as hdd(2,0) when it's actually hdd(0,0). Editing the
boot line and then menu.lst fix the problem until the next update.

[Bug 147472] Acer Aspire 5100 volume keys don't work

2007-09-30 Thread Niosop
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 7.10 on an Acer Aspire 5100 no longer responds correctly to the
Fn-Up/Fn-Down keyboard shortcuts. A volume slider does appear on
screen, but only toggles between 0% and 11% and doesn't seem to affect
any volumes. Both kmix and alsamixer work properly for setting the
volume, the problem is only with the keyboard shortcuts.

These keys worked properly under Feisty.

Let me know what extra information you need.

Yes, read-edid only gets build for i386 and powerpc (from its
debian/changelog file).

FYI, the get-edid | parse-edid call fails on AMD64 running ubuntu x86,

deactivated?

[Bug 147474] Can't upload files to flash website

2007-09-30 Thread wolfger
Public bug reported:

The problem is noticed on http://www.rsizr.com/ and after filing a bug
report with the site owner, he tested some Linux flash versions and
concluded that the problem is with the 9.0.48.0 version that Ubuntu
(Gutsy and Feisty, at least) is using. He reports that later versions
work fine with his site. This problem does not cause any harm to a
Firefox session, but it hangs in Opera, and crashes Konqueror (Feisty
versions).

[Bug 145887] Re: Gutsy Beta: Tablet Notebook's Stylus Not Working

2007-09-30 Thread Shadows_Friend
I can confirm this on an Acer Travelmate C200. The stylus worked very
well out-of-the box on Feisty and the Gutsy Tribes (LiveCDs and
installed systems). But with the new Gutsy Beta it neither works with
the LiveCD nor with the installed system. The reason are the following
commented lines in xorg.conf:

Section ServerLayout
Identifier Default Layout
  screen Default Screen
Inputdevice Generic Keyboard
Inputdevice Configured Mouse

# Uncomment if you have a wacom tablet
# InputDevice stylusSendCoreEvents
# InputDevice cursorSendCoreEvents
# InputDevice eraserSendCoreEvents
Inputdevice Synaptics Touchpad
EndSection

When you uncomment them it works again.
I think if a wacom device is recognized during installation, it should be
automatically adjusted so that it works out-of-the-box again, as it did before.

[Bug 146741] Re: package hal-device-manager 0.5.9.1-1ubuntu8 failed to install/upgrade:

2007-09-30 Thread angrykeyboarder
I'm having the same problem. In my case it's Gutsy/i386 not a dist-
upgrade but a simple upgrade from a previous verson of HAL.

Me thinks the Importance needs to go from undecided to critical.
Anytime yesterday would be fine. ;)

I can't access peripherals (notably an external hard drive) and other
packages are depending on HAL and therefore won't install.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 64011 ***

The real reason of the crash is a package version mismatch in dapper.
Fixed in edgy.

Since the title and description is too misleading, I'm marking this as a
duplicate of bug #64011, which has a much more clear and short
decription of the problem.

[Bug 87078] Re: RTL-8029: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth1: transmit timed out

2007-09-30 Thread Patrice Brousseau
I do not know if it could help someone here: I'm on 64Studio (not
Ubuntu) and I have a Realtek 8139 that gave a similar message today
(netdev watchdog eth1: transmit out.

I finally found that a Windows Update (Realtek 8139 new driver) I made
last week gave this weird result in my Linux partition... I rolled back
the old driver in Windows and I had no more of these messages and my
network is running fine again.

I found the solution at: http://bozziesfw.wordpress.com/2007/08/14
/netdev-watchdog-timed-out-realtek-8139/

*To the administrator, if you find this message is not related in any
way to this bug, do not hesitate to remove it.

[Bug 58981] Re: After loading X on terminal keboard hangs

I am confused as to what happens to /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf. I installed
Edubuntu on top of an ubuntu server which was also acting like a router
and a DHCP server. HOwever, as soon as I installed Edubuntu, my local
area connection got messed up, as the configuration file for the dhcp
server moved to /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf away from its default location. How
can I change it back?

[Bug 147484] No Easy Way to record Video

2007-09-30 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

I just want a simple, no frills way to take video footage off of my
camera, through my TV card, and save a xvid or divx file that I can
upload to YouTube. I'd love it if I could choose between speex and mp3
for the audio, but I'd much rather just have a One Size Fits All app
that has a big red circle on a square button, that when pressed RECORDS
the incoming signal, and spits out a generic xvid that I can then upload
to YouTube, edit in Kino (or some better iMovie clone), and etc.

What I've tried:
Kino
Google Picasa (under wine)
MythTV
TVtime (no record function)
Pitivi
Zapping

What's Worked:
Not a damned thing. I even tried gtk record my desktop with the video playing
in TVtime, but the video was jumpy and erratic, and way too high res.

If Ubuntu is ever going to be a first tier OS that more than a gross
minority of people use, this needs to be addressed.

[Bug 147487] No way to play Nintendo 64 roms in Ubuntu

2007-09-30 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

The only native linux emulator (Mupen) crashes. I've tried dozens of
other ones under Wine, but none of them work, either. They said it was
a wine bug in IRC, but in the end, that doesn't matter. What matters is
that I can't switch all of my friends and family over to Ubuntu, because
they won't be able to play Mario Kart 64.

What I've tried:
Mupen (native) Emulator opens, on loading a rom, crashes and disappears.

Under Wine:
1964: Doesn't work.
Project64: Doesn't work.
Mupen ++: Doesn't work.
Mupen for Windows : Doesn't wor.

You may not think Nintendo 64 is all that important to Linux adoption,
but over half of the machines that I administer require it.

2007-09-30 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

Pidgin is AWESOME, and it allows me to stay in touch with people on:

MySpace
AIM
MSN
Yahoo
Jabber
ICQ
IRC

But Ekiga is a nightmare. I would like to right click on a buddy in my
buddy list in Pidgin, and select Video Conference and have a big
window open showing their webcams output, and sending mine. I'd like it
to happen with Speex audio, and h.264 or better video. I'd like it to
have echo cancellation and work seamlessly on all Ubuntu Machines that I
administer. I'd also like to use a real video camera and my TV card,
and my condenser mic that I have going through a mixer and into the
audio card.

You may not think Video Chat is all that important to Linux adoption,
but most of the machines that I administer require it.

If Ubuntu is ever going to be a first tier OS that more than a gross
minority of people use, this needs to be addressed.

[Bug 147494] Update Manager Breaking Random Stuff

2007-09-30 Thread rhY
Public bug reported:

I've been running Gutsy since about Tribe 4 (alternate install is all
that would work), and there are numerous problems on this machine now.

Something somewhere is broken in update manager, because my .dmrc file
got mangled, Direct Rendering has broken, compiz crashes, XGL has
numerous problems, and I am getting depressed.

I will do a fresh reinstall with the official Gutsy when it comes out,
but for us testers, things should work more smoothly.

[Bug 147156] Re: Wacom tablet doesn't work on XGL session

2007-09-30 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
rhY: If your users require the use of a Wacom tablet, then simple don't
install the xserver-xgl package until this bug is fixed and they won't
have any troubles. The xserver-xgl package is not installed by default,
and is not required for any critical functionality.

[Bug 129500] Re: APIC error on CPU0: 40(40) followeb by CAPS LOCK LED STARTS BLINKING AND THE NOTEBOOK CRASH

2007-09-30 Thread Eric Haslehurst
I have had none of the APIC error on CPU0: 40(40) messages in my dmesg
log since my last posting. However, I did continue to get the crashes
more and more frequently (the blinking caps lock light). I had
installed kdm, and was running the kde desktop sometime before all this
happened. One day, after I decided to run GNOME, and I did not have the
problems. However, due to a problem, that I am not sure about, I could
not reconfigure GDM to be my default desktop manager (there are numerous
postings about this, such as
http://ircarchive.info/kubuntu/2007/3/18/124.html ), where I get the
invoke-rc.d: initscript gdm, action reload failed. message, and even
if I double checked that sudo dpkg --configure kdm or gdm was good.
Anyhow, I no longer get the crashes, so I believe the issue for me, with
the blinking caps lock light where my computer freezes, was associated
with the KDE desktop somehow. Since I had complete freezes, and it
could not log the error in dmesg, I have no idea where the crash was
coming from. Since I reinstalled Ubuntu, and have not reinstalled KDE,
I have had no problems whatsoever with either the CPU0: 40(40) flood or
the blinking caps lock crash. Please note that both bennyatc and I have
AMD64 Athlon CPU's, and we both have ATI Radeon Mobility Video cards
(although his is a X700 and mine is a Xpress 200M). I'm sorry I cannot
give more specific information as to what exact program was causing the
crashes.

Thank you very much for the assistance you have provided thus far.
Since I reinstalled, everything is quite stable. I just wanted to give
some feedback on what could be causing the bug.

[Bug 147495] (Gutsy?) Gnome keyboard layout switcher (Dvorak-Qwerty) not fully monotonic (fails on ^D, ^E)

2007-09-30 Thread Joe Blaylock
Public bug reported:

I'm running the latest (as of 20:00EST 30Sep07) Gutsy build on an IBM
Thinkpad T40.

I use a software-mapped Dvorak keyboard, and switch to QWERTY when I
want to play nethack, which is where I first noticed this bug. It seems
to effect all terminal applications, and may effect others as well. In
short, software-mapping to Dvorak, and then switching back to Qwerty,
doesn't fully remap the keyboard, and while I haven't exhaustively
examined every key combination to see what doesn't get remapped, the
ones I've found are pretty annoying.

Reproduction:
Create a new, clean user. Go to System/Preferences/Keyboard.
Layouts tab.
Keyboard model: Generic 101-key PC (not sure if this is important)
Press Add
Layout: U.S. English
Variant: Dvorak
Press Add
Now drag U.S. English Dvorak above U.S. English in the keyboard layout
list. It's the new default.
Press Close.

Now, add the Keyboard Indicator to one of your panels.
Log out. Log in.

The keyboard indicator should say USA, and if you open a terminal and
strike left-to-right along the home row with your left hand, you should
read aoeu. Hit ^a^k to kill this line.

Click on the keyboard indicator. It now says USA2. When you type
along the home row again, you should see the familiar asdf.

Here's where you should see breakage:
Hit ^A. The cursor will jump under the 'a'. Hit ^e. Where it should jump to
the end of the line, you'll probably see it insert a dot, or some other
nonsense. Hit ^d, and you'll see the cursor jump to the end of the line.

So clearly, everything's getting swapped in the remap back to Qwerty
except ^D and ^E, which are still in their Dvorak positions.

I don't know whse fault this is.

few days later i recognized the glxinfo problem and i dont remembered
this driver switch or dont get the idea that the fglrx driver could be
the problem

also the solution was to deinstall fglrx package.
