I can confirm this bug is also present in Gutsy.
One way to fix it is to edit /etc/modprobe.d/libpisock9 and comment the line

It is a hack work around found through google, but it solved the problem
with the adapter changing on each reboot... when using a static IP.

Remove all lines of various eth0, eth1, eth2 and so on and replace them

2007-10-19 Thread Jens Berke
IBM Thinkpad R52 with X300: Gutsy Release Candidate, clean install and
upgraded to all latest packages as of today.

Freezes appear as well, sometimes pretty quick after a few minutes, but
at least after about 20 minutes. I use the ati open source driver.
lscpi output is attached.

Remembering that the Gutsy RC *live* system seemed to work pretty well
on my laptop with compiz enabled I tried that again today: I started the
Gutsy 7.10 Final live system from CD and played around with compiz four
more than half an hour. No freeze! Maybe that's a hint for someone?

[Bug 154519] VPN Authenticating, but not saving username and password for next attempt

2007-10-19 Thread Stephen Gornick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-pptp

I am able to connect to my company's VPN ( Microsoft SBS2006 w/ Active
Directory ) from my Gutsy v7.10 Desktop AMD64. However, in subsequent
attempts to connect the username and password fields are blank, even
though I had both Remember password for this session and Save
password in keyring options checked during the previous, successful
attempt.

I can reconnect by entering the correct username and password, so the
only issue is that the username and password are not remembered.

Network Manager does issue a WARN to the syslog:

NetworkManager: WARN  nm_spawn_process():
nm_spawn_process('/usr/sbin/nscd -i hosts'): could not spawn process.
(Failed to execute child process /usr/sbin/nscd (No such file or
directory))

I don't know if that is a factor.

This is on a clean install of Ubuntu v7.10 Gutsy AMD64 Desktop

VPN from a Gutsy v7.10 i386 Desktop.

execute the form, simply takes too long, and suddenly starts coming up with
java bugs, telling me that I can't find this or the other primary keys, and it
simply seems too much of a form for it to open it in a clean and easy manner.

I think it is due to the default JRE openoffice comes with. I ran the
same odb file in a suse 10.3 machine and it took it 5 seconds to open
the database, with no single error. I'm not sure, but I think it uses a
different Java Runtime Environment, which is implicated in the execution
of queries. I assume this also because the errors ubuntu openoffice.org
base comes up with are like this:

the contents of a combo box or list could not be determined. General
Error: java.lang.NullPointerException.

When trying to open the specific form for several (many) times, it
finally loads it with no problems. I assume this is because it somehow
loads it in RAM or cache, and can finally execute it after attempting
for several times.

Something else: If I execute the queries first, and THEN, I try to load
the form, it doesn't crash. It takes way more time than in other
distros, but it works good.

Thank you for your help.

[Bug 139754] Re: [GUTSY] XMMS is missing the Flac plugin from repositories

2007-10-19 Thread mic.1.2.3
At present gutsy’s libflac8 and feisty’s libflac7 are installed in my
gutsy-setup.
libflac8 was probably installed experimentalising mit xmms2-plugin-flac, but
this plugin do not seem to be compatible mit xmms.

The dependecies of feisty’s xmms-flac explicitly need libflac7 which is
not included in gutsy. Fortunately feisty’s libflac7 and gutsy’s
libflac8 do not conflict with each other on my system. The other
dependencies of feisty’s xmms-flac are satisfied by gutsy.

Well, I won't name it a dirty hack, but it urges the request on a gutsy-
native xmms-flac, of course!

[Bug 154479] kdepim still in version 3.5.7 while KDE 3.5.8 has already been released and (apparently only partly) packaged

2007-10-19 Thread Andreas Ntaflos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim

It is probably not right to report this here, but neither is it right,
IMHO, to bug Jonathan Riddel via personal e-Mail, so I'll take my
chances here.

As mentioned [1] KDE 3.5.8 was released a few days ago and apparently
most of it has already been packaged for Kubuntu (7.04 and 7.10), for
example kdebase [2], kdemultimedia [3] and others. But kdepim [4] still
remains in version 3.5.7 (4:3.5.7enterprise20070926-0ubuntu2 to be
exact).

I highly doubt it was simply forgotten, but on the off chance that it
was I hereby issue a reminder :) Version 3.5.8 of kdepim fixes a number
of quite critical [5] or inconvenient [6] bugs and I have been waiting
for some time now to be able to fully use KMail again on my machine at
work.

I'd be interested in learning the reason why there is a hold-up with
kdepim for Kubuntu (7.10 in my case)? Do I just need to be patient or
are there any major showstoppers that are Kubuntu-specific?

Again sorry for this version-bump request.

[Bug 154477] Audio system protection from application failure

2007-10-19 Thread LeoDang
Public bug reported:

When I play some video or MP3 files, sometimes Mplayer or Rhythmbox may
stop playing the file and stop responding for no particular reasons.
What is more, when I use Force quite to quit the above applications.
The computer cannot play produce any more sound without rebooting.

I think compared with Windows OS, Ubuntu shall be work hard on this
issue, that is the failure of one particular application(such as
Mplayer) shall not influence the stability of the whole system(such as
the usability of audio subsystem, in this example).

[Bug 32357] Re: Installer doesn't recognise SATA disks as primary.

2007-10-19 Thread Ivan Savcic
I have a mixed SATA / ATA system and same thing happens.

During the installation, it seems that the ATA drive was detected as hd0
and grub installed itself there. SATA were hd1, hd2.

During the boot, grub detects SATA discs as hd0 and hd1, while ATA is
hd2.

I fixed it by re-doing the grub-install from the rescue console and
editing /boot/grub/menu.lst to change every occurence of hd1 with hd0.

Happened to me before, on Ubuntu 7.04. I'm really amazed it didn't get
acknowledged/fixed so far.

@ Simon Law:
The problem is different detection of drives during the installation and after,
ie. during the boot of the installed system. It has nothing to do with the
hardware itself, rather than with (wild guessing) different kernel, different
module loading/order and such from the installation disc compared to installed
system.

no, /usr/local is not touched by the installer. either you did install

[Bug 154274] Re: Website does not reference Debian visibly

2007-10-19 Thread Daniel
Hi!
I really don't think that this is a bug... If you go to the About us
(http://www.ubuntu.com/aboutus), there they talk about Debian and I think
there's the right place in the Website for doing this.
I kind of agree with Ali AbdulAziz opinion: Ubuntu is currently being heavily
marketed and confusing Ubuntu’s target audience with multiple brand names is a
really bad idea.

[Bug 8497] Re: grub guessed BIOS disk order incorrectly

2007-10-19 Thread TJ
If you're feeling particularly adventurous you could build the kernel
EDD module.

1. Install the kernel-source from GIT
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelGitGuide) or use

$ sudo apt-get install linux-source
$ sudo tar -xjf linux-source-2.6.22.tar.bz2
$ cd /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.22

2. Edit debian/config/*/config  matching the PC's architecture e.g:

$ sudo sed -i 's/# CONFIG_EDD is not set/CONFIG_EDD=m/'
debian/config/*/config

3. Build the kernel package (See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMaintenance)

$ fakeroot debian/rules binary-arch

4. Install the edd module (not the entire custom kernel)

$ sudo cp drivers/firmware/edd.ko /lib/modules/$(uname
-r)/kernel/drivers/firmware/
$ sudo depmod -a
$ modinfo edd

You should see the module's basic details. If you do you can go ahead
and load it:

$ sudo modprobe edd

5. Now check sysfs for what EDD reports:

$ ls /sys/firmware/edd/int13_dev8?/
$ cat /sys/firmware/edd/int13_dev8?/mbr_signature

This assumes the BIOS that supports EDD, and that edd has access to
libx86

[Bug 105638] Re: MacBook iSight (isight_usb) reports 640x480, but fails to work at that resolution

I just heard from the developer of Cheese (Photobooth-like application)
that fixes are implemented in gsteamer cvs. I have not yet tried them.

[Bug 106782] Re: checkfs fsck command options don't work with fsck.jfs at boot

2007-10-19 Thread rwcitek
BTW, the google group thread is here:

http://groups.google.com/group/linuxusersgroup/browse_thread/thread/f1a93555fdf0da3f

The error could be in a number of places: fsck, blkid,
fsck.{jfs,reiserfs}, some place else.

Some things to try with example code:

- look at  /etc/rcS.d/S30checkfs.sh
  lexx -iX /etc/rcS.d/S30checkfs.sh

- run an strace on fsck
  strace fsck -C -R -A -a  /tmp/fsck.trace.txt

- query UUIDs using blkid:
  awk '/UUID/ {print $1}' /etc/fstab | xargs -n 1 blkid -t

- run fsck.* using UUID
  awk '/UUID/  /ext3/ {print $1}' /etc/fstab | xargs -n 1 fsck.ext3

- look at /etc/blkid.tab for UUID entries
  cat /etc/blkid.tab

Regards,
- Robert

[Bug 126333] Re: [GUTSY] Regression - Volume Control Bar doesn't slide when using keyboard shortcut

2007-10-19 Thread Niosop
I don't know if it helps, but the problem was present on Kubuntu 7.10 as
well, not using compiz or beryl (straight X, no XGL or AIGLX). I don't
believe that Kubuntu uses gnome-applets. It could be a separate problem
that happens to look a lot like this one, or there could be a lower
level root cause that affects both. I opened a bug on that, but it was
merged with this.

Re: [Bug 132475] Re: Network-manager's dialog box to unlock key manager is hidden at startup when compiz is activated

2007-10-19 Thread Gadget Boy
Hi

This bug was reported under Gutsy Gibbon in beta version, and appeared
sometimes but not at every startup. But as it didn't appeared for quite
a long time, let's say it is solved. If it appears again, I'll tell you

[Bug 148781] Re: openoffice crashes on insert special character (with lyrae's GAIA 0.3 theme)

2007-10-19 Thread Rafael Brandão
hey! i'm here once again to report that i've managed to reproduce this
bug once again using the following theme: Frozen Plastic (http://www
.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Frozen+Plastic+Suite?content=44781).
I'm not sure though, whether this theme uses pixbuf/pixmap or not... in
any case, i'll have to stick to clearlooks for a while...

[Bug 154142] Re: 800x600 live boot makes install difficult

2007-10-19 Thread Jose Castillo
Both Intel nVidia card worked without problems and detected the
correct resolution (1280x800 in my case).

I also tried running Virtualbox with the nVidia card under Windows XP
and it also stays @ 800x600. (Both Ubuntu Kubuntu)

Also (maybe worth mentioning) I'm using VT-x (my CPU supports it) under
Virtualbox. (Although it happens also with VT-x turned off)

I'm attaching my Virtualbox machine settings so maybe this way you can
replicate the problem.

[Bug 149639] Re: Xorg crashes very frequently

I decided to risk it and install Gutsy anyway. And I'm sorry to report
that the problem with the nv driver remains: X is very unstable,
completely freezing the system every few minutes.

I am running out of options here, because I don't feel like reinstalling
Edgy all over again...
