[Bug 152912] Re: pam configuration could use safer defaults

2007-11-08 Thread lcars

Btw, the decision upong ignore return code opposed to bad/die is entirely
delegated to the application, and not to pam itself. And here's
login/gdm/whatever are behaving that way. Hence why pam_deny is always good to
have.

The stack is considered to be 'failed' only if you get a bad or a die,
not an ignore.

[Bug 160901] Re: install partitioner borked

2007-11-08 Thread David Balažic
While trying to reproduce this under VMware, I encountered the following :
 - even if the disk is used up by non-empty partitions, the guided mode just
takes the disk with no warnings
 - at the end of the install wizard, after clicking Forward, the partman
starts and then fails while formatting ext3 (will post details later)

Should I open another bug for that ? (in case there isn't such already)

@Motin and Michael:

I filed a new bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/160906),
hope it's ok.

Michael, what do you mean with upstream's OOo build? I'm not able to
download OOo sources and compile them, if you mean that. As I said, I
tried with the latest packaged version I can get (2.3.0-1ubuntu5.2
provided by dAniel hAhler).

Cheers,

Fabio

[Bug 160906] Exception when saving to file in OpenOffice using UNO API (Java bindings)

2007-11-08 Thread Fabio Da Soghe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I have a blocking problem with OpenOffice in Gutsy. I get the error with
the official OpenOffice repository version (2.3.0-1ubuntu5) and with the
updated version (2.3.0-1ubuntu5.2) available from
http://codeprobe.de/tmp/ooo/ (provided by dAniel hAhler).

I'm using OpenOffice in server mode: I run it on Ubuntu Server 7.10,
using xvfb (so I have no gnome desktop). I'm developing a java
application that makes use of UNO interface to connect to a live OOo
server and do some work on text documents. To achieve this I keep a
running OOo instance with this command:

xvfb-run --server-args='-screen 0 800x600x16' -a
/usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice -headless -nologo -norestore
accept=socket,host=0.0.0.0,port=2002;urp;

The problem I get is an exception when I try to save the document to disk:
com.sun.star.task.ErrorCodeIOException:
at
com.sun.star.lib.uno.environments.remote.Job.remoteUnoRequestRaisedException(Job.java:187)

at com.sun.star.lib.uno.environments.remote.Job.execute(Job.java:153)
at com.sun.star.lib.uno.environments.remote.JobQueue.enter(JobQueue.java:349)
at com.sun.star.lib.uno.environments.remote.JobQueue.enter(JobQueue.java:318)
at

at
com.sun.star.lib.uno.bridges.java_remote.ProxyFactory$Handler.invoke(ProxyFactory.java:141)

at $Proxy60.storeAsURL(Unknown Source)

The Java code is this:

public void storeDocComponent(String storeUrl) throws java.lang.Exception {
storeUrl = storeUrl.replace(\\, /);
XStorable xStorable = (XStorable)
UnoRuntime.queryInterface(XStorable.class, xComponent);
PropertyValue[] storeProps = new PropertyValue[1];
if (storeUrl.endsWith(.doc)) {
storeProps[0] = new PropertyValue();
storeProps[0].Name = FilterName;
storeProps[0].Value = MS Word 97;
}
xStorable.storeAsURL(storeUrl, storeProps);
xComponent.dispose();
}

Please note that:
- it's not a write permission issue: I tried to chmod 777 the destination
directory with no success, and the OOo engine is able to create the file with 0
length;
- this whole system (my own application, the OOo headless server installation
and configuration) works fine in Ubuntu 6.10 (the OOo version is 2.0.4).
- I tried in Ubuntu Server 7.04, with OOo 2.2 with no success (there is another
type of error: while inserting an image into the document, but the exception is
aways about UNO calls)
- the same installation works fine with OOo 2.3 on windows xp, without changing
a single line of code, so I'm confident it's not an UNO API issue changing from
OOo 2.0 (which works on Ubuntu 6.10 and windows xp) to OOo 2.3 (which works
only on windows xp).

It's almost a week of hard work that I'm trying to resolve this problem
with no hope, so now I'm forced (due to my deadline) to setup my
production environment with an Ubuntu Server 6.10 (the only system I was
able to make working).

If there's any other info/dump/stack trace I can supply, I would be glad
to.

Best regards,

Fabio Da Soghe

[Bug 95091] Re: MASTER incompatible native extension: allpeers

2007-11-08 Thread Ludek Cigler
Here is the strace for firefox with AllPeers installed.

Janek: I could not reproduce your problem with Thunderbird, but it seems
that it should be enough to change the symlink
/usr/lib/firefox/libsoftokn3.so, the other symlink (libnss3.so) does not
have to be modified. Please let me know if you still have problems with
Thunderbird after that, and also how to reproduce the bug.

[Bug 120834] Re: intel gm965 freezes with 3d applications

2007-11-08 Thread Fernando
Hi,

I faced some problems too with the Compaq 6510b...
I solved installing the xserver-xorg-video-intel and the
compizconfig-settings-manager packages... The 3D, resolution, all working well.
My xorg-conf is attached. Please notice that the resolution of the monitor is
fake

However, the dual-screen does not work properly. When I connect the
external monitor the laptop's monitor resolution crashes and I can't
manage how I make a extended (right-side) screen. I just take a copy
from the laptop's monitor on the external one.

Some idea???

[Bug 160745] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGSEGV when opening .xls file

Sure, but it doesn't crash anymore when opening this file. Instead,
sometimes OpenOffice closes, then wake with proposal to recover the .xls
file. And this is a typical behaviour since Gutsy release - very often
OpenOffice vanishes and then is waking up, offering to recover the .xls-
files.

[Bug 90271] Re: Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops)

2007-11-08 Thread levander
What happens on the box I just built using an old Realtek 8139 card I
had lying around is that the 8139too driver will load. But, after using
the network for a while, the whole computer will hang.

I finally figured out to swap the Realtek 8139 card out for a Linksys
and my computer is running flawlessly.

That does leave the posibility that my problem is a bad NIC and not some
issue with the driver. I haven't tried the NIC under another operating
system.

I was able to reproduce the problem in a simple test case here by simply
downloading a 700 MB iso image. It would consistently hang within an
hour with the Realtek, it always worked fine with the Linksys.

[Bug 152794] Re: nis daemon fails to attach to domain the first time it is run in Gutsy

2007-11-08 Thread István Váradi
I had the same problem since upgrading to Gutsy. The problem seems to be
that the dhcdbd (some DHCP daemon) is started after NIS and autofs, so
the interface has no chance to come up before init attempts to start
NIS. One solution seems to be to start dhcdbd earlier, i.e. rename
S24dhcdbd to S13dhcdbd in /etc/rc2.d. It seems to work for me.

Another solution may be to uncomment the iface ethX inet dhcp (or
similar) line in /etc/network/interfaces, but I have not tried that one.

2007-11-08 Thread Caspar Clemens Mierau
This bug is fixed on the upstream project. It has to be reviewed and
synched to Ubuntu but it is not yet clear if it goes to Gutsy or
Gutsy+1.

Please note: Not only CTRL-XYZ behaves like this. Also the usage of
icons does the same.

For now there is no need for further commenting this bug as all
neccessary information are collected. Let's just wait for the maintainer
now to decide what to do.

Thank you.

[Bug 105882] Re: OpenOffice.org have problems when using bold, italic and underline

2007-11-08 Thread JBLingan
The following can be used as a workaround for this problem.
Note that this problem affects ALL of the font-style buttons: BOLD, ITALICS,
UNDERLINE

In the following workaround the pressing of [CTRL+B/I/U] is indicated by
the brackets:

[CTRL+B] bold is on [CTRL+B] bold is off [CTRL+B] bold fails to turn on.
Highlight the offending word or phase and press [CTRL+B] again. This
will cause the effect to work and 'resets' the problem, which will
repeat the next time bold is turned off. This workaround is
inconvenient but it does work. It will function for all of the font
buttons.

By the way, I received an update saying the bug was fixed. When can we
access the fix?

[Bug 160938] Ubuntu Theme for small screens

2007-11-08 Thread martinus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-artwork

The default theme uses a lot of spacing and large buttons, which makes
it very difficult to use on small screens, e.g. 1280x800 or even
1027x768.

It would be very helpful to have a compact theme available that uses
small spacings. I have created a modification of clearlooks theme that
does exactly that, you can see a visual comparison here:
http://martin.ankerl.com/2007/11/04/clearlooks-compact-gnome-theme/

[Bug 160933] K/Ubuntu Gutsy on DV6000

2007-11-08 Thread Roberto Hrast
Public bug reported:

Dear friends..
I'm trying hard to install Kubuntu/Ubuntu 7.10 on my notebook HP DV6000
(DV6208nr).
I tryed to start installation wiht noapic, irqpoll and noirqdebug, but the
system freezes the note while performing installation.
The command that allows me to install the system is acpi=off. But after
installed, the behavior is very strange. It seems that the commands are tied
to the mouse. If I do not move the mouse, the system remain freezed. If I move
the mouse, the command I ask is executed.
It is impossible to install the Nvidia drivers as well. I tryed the Nvidia
driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run) and the proprietary driver too.
After installed the system crashes and a message Bcm43xx driver load fail or
not present appears.
The other option I tryed is the web upgrade. It does not work either..
I have even tryed to upgrade the bios to the version F.3A.. Nothing happened..
I have many contacts that are facing the same problem..
So, I decided to roll back to the 7.04 that is working perfectly..

Thanks for your attention.

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
The only change was: conqsvr42.c/gcputime: Changed CLK_TCK to CLOCKS_PER_SEC,
fixes FTBFS.
The package from debian builds fine without any modification, so I think
syncing it would be ok

Changelog since current hardy version 8.2b-1ubuntu1:

[Bug 103681] Re: Debconf question during install should ask if smartd should be started automatically, like in hddtemp package

2007-11-08 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
** Summary changed:

- smartd needs to be enabled too many times
+ Debconf question during install should ask if smartd should be started
automatically, like in hddtemp package

** Description changed:

- To enabled SMART monitoring tool, you need to
+ It's not easy to find how to enable hard disk S.M.A.R.T. monitoring for
+ ordinary computer administrator, especially for home computer user.
+ Almost nobody knows, that he should read
+ /usr/share/doc/smartmontools/README.Debian, where is information, that
+ after installation S.M.A.R.T. monitoring isn't working and file
+ /etc/default/smartmontools should be modified for having working
+ S.M.A.R.T. monitoring...

- * install the package
- * run that start-up script on boot
- * AND uncomment some lines in /etc/default/smartmontools
+ So, there should be at least debconf question, asked at package's install
time - look for example hddtemp package, which does very similar job - monitors
hard disks temperature.
+ I think we simply could look at hddtemp source package's debian folder and
steal needed scripts and debconf templates.

- The last step is just too much and completely unintuitive (it took me a
- lot of google to find out and from the forums, I am not the only one).
- If any, those lines should be uncommented by default. Yet, I would argue
- about the usefulness of that configuration file at all when one can
- simply not start the start-up script on boot.
+ It seems most users think, that after installation of smartmontools
+ package S.M.A.R.T. monitoring works on their system, because in
+ smartmontools package's description there are no warning, that
+ monitoring doesn't starts automatically - there is just nice info, that
+ S.M.A.R.T. monitoring should be on any Linux system:
+
+ control and monitor storage systems using S.M.A.R.T.
+ The smartmontools package contains two utility programs (smartctl and smartd)
to control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and
Reporting Technology System (S.M.A.R.T.) built into most modern ATA and SCSI
hard disks. It should run on any modern Linux system.
+
+ Majority of users simply installs smartmontools and don't know, that
+ this isn't enough for enabling S.M.A.R.T. monitoring, additionally they
+ need to:
+
+ 1. read the documentation in /usr/share/doc/smartmontools/README.Debian
+ 2. uncomment some lines in /etc/default/smartmontools
+ 3. try to start smartd (invoke-rc.d smartd start)
+ 4. read the log files to find if smartd was started
+ 5. edit /etc/smartd.conf if there are any errors in log files.
+
+ These steps is just completely unintuitive (it took me a lot of google
+ to find out and from the forums, I am not the only one). Yet, I would
+ argue about the usefulness of /etc/default/smartmontools configuration
+ file at all when one can simply not start the start-up script on boot.

[Bug 131983] Re: [gutsy] trackerd kills disk io

2007-11-08 Thread gcc
I agree, trackerd should NOT be enabled by default. However nice it
might be in theory, right now it's much too buggy and hogs too much
memory and disk.

Frankly I'm amazed that it got into a default install of Gutsy in this
state. Jamie McCracken, do you not care about all the users who complain
about it? Would you not rather disable it by default until it's stable
and people are happy with it, than breaking the Ubuntu experience for
millions of innocent users and giving trackerd a VERY bad name? (search
Google for trackerd if you don't believe me)

I don't think Ubuntu releases are a good place to beta-test new software
on anyone, especially not if it's been tested in testing and people have
asked for it to be removed from the final release and those requests
have been ignored.

On our first Gutsy system I discovered trackerd eating 100% cpu... by
sitting in a loop of continuous SIGSEGV. Catching SIGSEGV is usually a
bad idea, and then reinstalling the signal handler is even worse. Please
fix that.
