[Bug 147298] Re: [Gutsy] AD198x Analog: microphone misconfigured

2008-03-04 Thread muhalifsirin
well, for now I decided not to try the mic anymore. I will just wait for
a major solution to come.

I also tired the live cd, no solution.

I can not install feisty, because the only way I can get my graphic card
working is using the latest version of ubuntu(even 7.10 without updates
can not run my graphic card properly. I have to finish all updates
first)

So, I will just for now:(

-and I know that ubuntu is really good at using hardware, I tried a
couple of other distros which gave me nightmares(especially suse). The
only distributions I found well working were Ubuntu and Pardus

[Bug 198122] Re: hardy alpha 5 hangs during startup

2008-03-04 Thread James Westby
Hi Freferik,

I also do not understand the changes, I was just
adding some information for someone else to look
at when they consider your report.

I think they are changes from gutsy to hardy, yes.

However, it is also possible that the failure is not actually
in this area, it is in the next step that the kernel tries
to do.

Thanks,

James

[Bug 176335] Re: eam

2008-03-04 Thread Markus Korn
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Markus

you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-03-04 Thread Conrad Knauer
SneakyWho_am_i wrote: if a manufacturer were to move enough boxes
with Ubuntu preinstalled INTO retail stores, it would be a breakthrough
and probably correct about 7000 lines for this bug. They need motivation
to do this. Where is it going to come from?

I note that Dell recently announced
(http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/corp/pressoffice/en/2007/2007_10_22_rr_000)
that it will be selling their systems in retail stores (e.g. here in
Canada Staples recently announced that they are selling Dells). As
they're the only major OEM to ship Linux systems to average users, I
suggest that we consider them the primary focus for our efforts.
Consider Dell's Ideastorm Idea #103088:

[Bug 198285] [NEW] cannot move files when the destination is not local

2008-03-04 Thread Toby Anderson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ubuntu 7.10 fresh install
the problem seems to be in Nautilus (2.20.0) and not other file managers.
Many of my folders are mounted via NFS from my server.
When I try to move a file from a mounted folder to a mounted folder, or from a
local folder to a mounted folder by drag and drop I get an error: 'Error Not
on the same file system while moving filename.'

I expect the file to be moved if it's on the same file system or copied
if it's not, but this doesn't happen.

[Bug 196278] Re: driver scheda video ati

2008-03-04 Thread Markus Korn
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Markus

[Bug 119672] Re: Gutsy Gibbon and FN keys on Sony Vaio

2008-03-04 Thread André Barmasse
Aaaah, crap!! Since last weeks hardy heron update to kernel
2.6.24-10-generic the power management on my Sony Vaio VGN-FS195VP seems
again rather broken.

First of all the possibility to set the dimming precentage for battery
mode in the gnome-power-manager has simply disappeared! Why the hell did
this happen? It was there since I first installed the Hardy Heron Alpha
1 and it was working perfectly. And second: If I pull out the power
cable the computer goes into power save mode - but there is no dimming
of the screen which - as I recall - should be part of the power saving
process.

To me, it is sometimes an enigma why things that are working perfectly
are changed again to the worse. I am well aware that the seems to be
major challenge to get the kernel, the sony modules, hal and finally
gnome together to work smoothly. So I hope this will be solved again
with some of the next updates ... fingers crossed, folks!!

[Bug 198287] [NEW] multiple tabs don't look like in GTK apps

2008-03-04 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Firefox has made great improvements in looking like a normal GTK app,
but there are still some things to polish. When there are many open
tabs, two issues can be noticed:

-The rightmost tab is splitted: it only appears partially on screen,
which doesn't happen in any GTK app. If there really is no place for it
it should just not appear at all.

-The arrows to the left and right of the tabs do not follow the gnome
theme. You can compare Firefox with a GTK app -gedit- in the attached
screenshots.

[Bug 198293] [NEW] hardy alpha5 install hangs on import step

2008-03-04 Thread khink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

When installing Hardy Alpha5, the install process hangs on the step
where account information is imported from my other partition on the
disk. The mouse pointer changes to busy, but nothing happens for a
long time. Also, ubiquity doesn't take up a lot of resources (according
to top).

I am installing on an HP6710b. Ubuntu 7.10 and Windows are already on the disk.
Up to this point, the entire install went smoothly:
- screen resolution detected correctly
- wireless works
- desktop effects (transparency) enabled by default
- resizing the existing Ubuntu partition succeeded

As this problem seems similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/97081,
I'll follow the steps suggested there as well, and get back to you soon
with an update. If anyone wants me to check something else, please let
me know.

[Bug 164475] Re: users-admin deletes privileges granted to ADS domain users with the command line utility (adduser)

2008-03-04 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I have reproduced the bug today in hardy, after a dist-upgrade to current
packages.
Adding a new local user deletes the privileges granted to a domain user by the
command line utility.
The difference in hardy is that when you try to delete the newly created user,
it is not really removed from /etc/passwd and /etc/group.
This seems to me as a new bug in gnome-system-tools...

The integration in active directory was made following the documentation
reported at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto

I did not try, until now, what happens if the ADS integration is made
using the new 'likewise-open' package.

[Bug 198295] [NEW] FF exception request: update hal to git head

2008-03-04 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

hal did not get a new upstream release for about half a year, so we
piled up lots of patches and are missing 5 months worth of upstream
fixes (who has been very active). Thus Debian and us started to package
a git head snapshot.

Just today David Zeuthen (main upstream) confirmed that it is time for
0.5.11:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/hal/2008-March/010975.html, so if
we get our git snapshot into Hardy now, then there is a good chance to
get in 0.5.11 without much pain, since it will only be a couple of
fixes.

I attach the relevant part of the upstream changelog, which has ~ 100
fixes, many of them highly relevant for Ubuntu. There is only three
commits which we didn't have as patch yet and which can be considered
features:

 Actually I think IFACE is the same as HAL_PROP_NET_INTERFACE;
saves a
fork + some IPC. Ditto for getting other properties too.

Btw, there should probably exist tools/hal-system-wol-* that
looks sorta
like this (this is snipped from another script in tools/) to check
whether the caller is actually privileged to do this

 hal_check_priv org.freedesktop.hal.wol.the-action

Added PolicyKit support and included suggestions from Dan Nicholson.

This time, everything is included in one single patch.

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2008-03-04 Thread Thomas Pi
I have tried the vanilla kernel (2.6.22-14) on Gutsy. Now I get better disc
performance, (ext3 / bs=10 ~4MB/s / bs=100 7MB/s), but desktop responsiveness
becomes worse.
I have tried Hardy too for a while and recognise, that the responsiveness of
the desktop is sometimes worse than under gutsy, even when there is no or light
disc access only.
Sometimes the gnome menu needs about 2 seconds before it appears. And there are
only logos and metadata to load. This are the problems as in gutsy and
especially in gusty with 2.6.22 kernel.
Hdparm reposts, that UDMA is on. And there is only iowait cpu consume on lowest
cpu frequency and a great disc performace, when coping a normal blocksize (=
4k) with dd.
Compiz is disabled on every of my installation. I use a 64-bit version of
gutsy and hardy.
I don't know the internal design of the linux kernel, so it's only a guess of
mine. There must be a bottleneck, which is especially caused by high disc
access, but also occurs on other activities. Perhaps interrupt handling.
Powertop reports ~400 awaking of the keyboard while copying to files from one
partition to another partition with a block size of 4k and writing this text.
And I am writing only maximal two or three letters per second. And the count is
only as high, when coping the files. Without disc access there are only about
200 awaking, while writing in the same speed.

With two writing and two reading disc access
  38,9% (445,7) interrupt : PS/2 keyboard/mouse/touchpad
  17,5% (200,7) interrupt : extra timer interrupt
  14,5% (165,8) interrupt : libata
   8,8% (100,5) interrupt : uhci_hcd:usb1, eth0

Without high io access
  31,2% (213,6) interrupt : extra timer interrupt
  25,6% (175,2) interrupt : PS/2 keyboard/mouse/touchpad
  14,7% (100,5) interrupt : uhci_hcd:usb1, eth0
   8,9% ( 60,8) interrupt : uhci_hcd:usb3, ahci, yenta, nvidia

[Bug 118676] Re: All menus disappear when swapping desktops

2008-03-04 Thread Yaniv
same thing happened to me when switching sessions to the KDE enviroment on
gutsy.
i guess this wasn't fixed on gutsy.
everything on the desktop is there but i can't see it, i tried to relog using
other sessions but the panels never load, only in the KDE session, in which my
wifi won't work !
i'll try the alt-f2 solution and let you know if that fixed it.
