2008-03-23 Thread Mirdamadi
hi, thanks for your attention.

I use kubuntu 7.10

and the last 2 questions:

1- I commented the CDs repositories from my source.list updated. my
main repository was active. my system is up to date. I've also installed
the latests upgrades of kde4. I upgraded my system right know but no
upgrades were found.

Does moving the ~/.openoffice.org2 directory fix the problem? If so it
may be an issue with new versions of OpenOffice not upgrading user

[Bug 186250] Re: gedit unable to open text file

2008-03-23 Thread John M
I installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron beta a couple of days ago. The draw-
spaces plugin is still unstable: opening the slatec file with the plugin
enabled, causes gedit to freeze, and I eventually have to kill the
application (since there is no response). I still haven't checked the
issue with the Latin-1 encoding.

Also, funily, the plugin remains enabled after if I disable it through
the preferences (and is finally disabled after I open/close gedit a
couple of times).

[Bug 203720] Re: Backlight on laptop not working

2008-03-23 Thread bclintbe
I've been using 7.10 on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop (ATI driver
enabled) and just installed the 8.04 Beta. If I try to run off of
battery the screen dims to the point that it is almost impossible to
see. I checked SystemPreferencesPower Management and went to the On
Battery Power tab. Unchecked Reduce backlight brightness and Dim
display when idle. No effect. As soon as I plug back in everything is
back to normal brightness. The dimness is only a problem on battery
power.

[Bug 205254] Re: python-policyd-spf failing on AOL SPF records.

2008-03-23 Thread John Neffenger
Actually, I think the following series of commands are more helpful.

First the normal UDP request (with a fall-back to TCP):

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ host -t txt aol.com
;; Warning: Message parser reports malformed message packet.
;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode.
aol.com descriptive text spf2.0/pra ip4:152.163.225.0/24 ip4:205.188.139.0/24
ip4:205.188.144.0/24 ip4:205.188.156.0/23 ip4:205.188.159.0/24
ip4:64.12.136.0/23 ip4:64.12.138.0/24 ip4:64.12.143.99/32 ip4:64.12.143.100/32
ip4:64.12.143.101/32 ptr:mx.aol.com ?all
aol.com descriptive text v=spf1 ip4:152.163.225.0/24 ip4:205.188.139.0/24
ip4:205.188.144.0/24 ip4:205.188.156.0/23 ip4:205.188.159.0/24
ip4:64.12.136.0/23 ip4:64.12.138.0/24 ip4:64.12.143.99/32 ip4:64.12.143.100/32
ip4:64.12.143.101/32 ptr:mx.aol.com ?all

Then a direct TCP-only request, which works fine:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ host -T -t txt aol.com
aol.com descriptive text spf2.0/pra ip4:152.163.225.0/24 ip4:205.188.139.0/24
ip4:205.188.144.0/24 ip4:205.188.156.0/23 ip4:205.188.159.0/24
ip4:64.12.136.0/23 ip4:64.12.138.0/24 ip4:64.12.143.99/32 ip4:64.12.143.100/32
ip4:64.12.143.101/32 ptr:mx.aol.com ?all
aol.com descriptive text v=spf1 ip4:152.163.225.0/24 ip4:205.188.139.0/24
ip4:205.188.144.0/24 ip4:205.188.156.0/23 ip4:205.188.159.0/24
ip4:64.12.136.0/23 ip4:64.12.138.0/24 ip4:64.12.143.99/32 ip4:64.12.143.100/32
ip4:64.12.143.101/32 ptr:mx.aol.com ?all

Then on the same machine, asking spf.py to test an AOL address (using
the client IP address and HELO name from the Postfix log files):

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ python /usr/share/python-support/python-spf/spf.py
64.12.138.200 [EMAIL PROTECTED] imr-m06.mx.aol.com
('temperror', 451, 'SPF Temporary Error: DNS Ran off end of data')

That's the same error I'm getting in the mail log. Then on the same
machine, asking spf.py just to get the AOL SPF records:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ python /usr/share/python-support/python-spf/spf.py aol.com
Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/share/python-support/python-spf/spf.py, line 1621, in module

a = [t for t in self.dns_txt(domain) if RE_SPF.match(t)]
  File /usr/share/python-support/python-spf/spf.py, line 1045, in dns_txt
return [''.join(a) for a in self.dns(domainname, 'TXT')]
File /usr/share/python-support/python-spf/spf.py, line 1150, in dns

File /usr/share/python-support/python-spf/spf.py, line 105, in DNSLookup
raise TempError, 'DNS ' + str(x)
__main__.TempError: DNS Ran off end of data

I get the same thing running policyd-spf directly:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ policyd-spf
client_address=64.12.138.200
helo_name=imr-m06.mx.aol.com
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

action=defer_if_permit Received-SPF: Temperror (SPF Temporary Error: DNS
Ran off end of data) Mail From client-ip=64.12.138.200;
helo=imr-m06.mx.aol.com; [EMAIL PROTECTED];
[EMAIL PROTECTED];

Do you get the same results?

Thanks,
John

[Bug 192611] Re: Cannot manually partition a new hard disk in installer

2008-03-23 Thread Heikki Keränen
I used shred -tool to zero first 16 gigabytes of my disk, rebooted from
Hardy 8.04 beta -live cd and made a new installation. This time
everything went as I supposed, manual partitioning was possible. So it
might be just the drive. Anyway I could not reproduce this anymore.

One thing comes to my mind. Would it be possible that the new drive did
not contain plain zeros in the MBR sector and the installer partitioning
tool misbehaved because of that?

No. I don't get the same response, but that's definitely a valid python-dns

[Bug 205434] [NEW] programs randomly crash in 8.04

2008-03-23 Thread Josh Hill
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release:8.04

I don't know the name of the source package, but after a while of using
a program (specifically firefox 3 beta that is included with the beta
version of 8.04), after closing, random programs crash or won't start
without freezing (terminal, firefox again, etc...). It requires me to

[Bug 203720] Re: Backlight on laptop not working

2008-03-23 Thread Matt
I believe my problem is now due to a bug in the 965 intel graphics
driver.

I grabbed the following updated driver from the below link and it didn't fix my
problem.
http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Uploads/xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.2.1-1ubuntu6_i386.deb.
I know the ubuntu7 driver is going to hit the repos soon, so hopefully that
fixes my problem.

However, I have found a workaround. If I switch to 1280 x 768 then
switch back to 1280 x 800, the backlight works.

[Bug 205254] Re: python-policyd-spf failing on AOL SPF records.

2008-03-23 Thread John Neffenger
I tried it on a third machine, and it's working there. The difference is
as follows. On the machine that fails, the long AOL SPF records are
being returned malformed and pyspf or its underlying support is
failing -- perhaps by design -- to trying again with TCP.

On the machine that fails (ldc1042), I get:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ host -t txt aol.com
;; Warning: Message parser reports malformed message packet.
;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode.
aol.com descriptive text v=spf1 ... ptr:mx.aol.com ?all
aol.com descriptive text spf2.0/pra ... ptr:mx.aol.com ?all

On the machine that works (gx110), I get:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ host -t txt aol.com
;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode.
aol.com descriptive text spf2.0/pra ... ptr:mx.aol.com ?all
aol.com descriptive text v=spf1 ... ptr:mx.aol.com ?all

with no Warning: Message parser reports malformed message packet
error. More importantly, I also get:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ python /usr/share/python-support/python-spf/spf.py
64.12.138.200 [EMAIL PROTECTED] imr-m06.mx.aol.com
('pass', 250, 'sender SPF authorized')

So now I need to figure out why my Hostway dedicated server would be
getting a malformed DNS response by UDP.

Thank you,
John

[Bug 195782] Re: Users not automatically added to scanner group: No scanning functions of HP multi-function in Hardy

2008-03-23 Thread Nanley Chery
I wish I'd seen this report before. I emailed the desktop list about
this problem - https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
desktop/2008-March/001522.html ;-s

By default, users do not have the privilege to Use scanners. Due to
the rise of multifunction printers, this is a problem that should be
fixed before the final release of 8.04.

Bug: I installed HPLIP-Toolbox and noticed errors and grayed out tabs -
the app was useless. It was not until I gave myself the permission to
Use scanners (under Users and Groups) that I was able to fully use the
application

P.S. Why are options, Use tape drives and Send and receive faxes
unchecked as well? (I kinda understand the tape drives part). Why not
give the admin users all privileges?

Here are (I believe) related bugs:

2008-03-23 Thread Andrew Starr-Bochicchio
Thanks for your bug report Jerone. You contacted me by email, but after further
investigation, I can not confirm this issue with
version 0.8.6.release.d-0ubuntu6 in Hardy. If I select always on top from the
context (right click) on the title bar, the results are expected. The window
stays on top of others even if I click on them. Am I misunderstanding your
issue?

[Bug 205441] [NEW] Add depends 'java-sdk'

2008-03-23 Thread Onkar Shinde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ant

Currently ant has dependencies java-compiler and java-runtime. While
sun-java5-jdk and sun-java6-jdk provide 'java-compiler', java-gcj-
compat-dev and openjdk-6-jdk and java-gcj-compat-dev provide 'java-sdk'.
I am not sure which one of them is correct.

So if you have plan to use openjdk-* packages, it is possible to have
ant installed but remove openjdk-6-jdk. Ant on it's own is not much
useful without a java compiler because the main task of compilation can
not be done.

Re: [Bug 203317] Re: gnome-panel needs a nice background image

2008-03-23 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
U right,
mine is a quck dirty. Generally we need a better solution with some
more options regarding theme applied to WM and gnome-panel - today
situation is more like a very quick solution [ to choose a file than
set as BG for Gnome Panel - it can be a transparent PNG indeed ], we
need something integrated with Themes Preferences, so the BG
transparency could be set in some kind of individual mode - shared from
Compiz OR from Metacity - depend on your WM engine.

I noticed in the Gnome 2.24 objectives is to include themeing of the
panel which I assume becomes part of the gtk engine and gtkrc.

[Bug 205442] [NEW] Iced Tea installation does not allow choice

2008-03-23 Thread Francois Thirioux
Public bug reported:

Hi,

[Hardy up-to-date, Sun Java 6 installed]

When installing Iced Tea (proposed in Adept without any special action), I was
not asked for a choice between Sun Java and Iced Tea.
(Some softwares do experience issues with IT... GeoGebra e.g.)

So I uninstalled ITea, and again I was not asked for a VM choice. No
Java was usable before some well known command lines on Java version.

It would be nice that, like kdm/gdm, the user is asked for a choice in
Adept.

Thanks

2008-03-23 Thread steven_shiau
When kernel 2.6.24-11-generic was in Hardy development branch, no such problem.
This is a bug definitely.
When I am running an ubuntu server, fb is the one I need, while suspend/resume
is not.
fb has been existed in the kernel for a long time, you can not just set it as
blacklist for all the situations just because of suspend/resume problem. Since
there are so many people they do not need suspend/resume function, but fb
function is required.
Please, something did changed from 2.6.24-11 to 2.6.24-12, fix it, please.

[Bug 205444] [NEW] bash completion inhibits ability to debug login scripts

2008-03-23 Thread era
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

/etc/bash_completion contains various magic which shut down all
debugging output from the invoking shell.

This is a problem if you are trying to run, say, your .profile under
set -vx, for example. This is one of the few facilities we have for
debugging log-in scripts. Granted, newbie users will not want to do
this, but for those of us who do, this is pretty crippling.

Please see some examples below.

This is for Gutsy; sorry if this is already reported or even (gasp)
fixed. I looked through open and closed bash and bash-completion bugs
but the search facility isn't very helpful and there are too many bugs
to go through manually.

In the following transcript, I am trying to figure out why stuff in my
spanking new .bash_profile is not taking. The stuff in
/etc/bash_completion.d prevents me from even seeing what happens after
/etc/bash_completion is invoked from my (standard, identical to
/etc/skel) .profile, which means I can't really do what I'm trying to
do. (Commenting out the sourcing of .profile seems to make my
.bash_profile work, unsurprisingly; but that's a lucky coincidence,
unless /etc/bash_completion is also responsible for this particular
problem ... which as such would not surprise me much.)

[Bug 205444] Re: bash completion inhibits ability to debug login scripts

2008-03-23 Thread era
Here's what the bash manual says about readonly assignments:

If any of the assignments attempts to assign a value to a
readonly variable, an error occurs, and the command exits with a non-
   zero status.

So I guess that's the root cause of this problem. I would interpret
this to mean that the script simply exits at this point, not merely
turns off all debugging output.

[Bug 205446] [NEW] klibido crashes X Server on Launch

2008-03-23 Thread BadServo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: klibido

On a clean installation of Hardy Beta 1, launching klibido will open
it's configuration box. After options have been selected, and the OK
button is pressed, klibido's main interface begins to load, then the
entire x server is killed. Momentarily, GDM will relaunch the login
screen.

So far, this bug has been consistently repeatable.

[Bug 190754] Re: Over-optimistic buffering in PulseAudio causes underruns (audible stuttering, pops)

2008-03-23 Thread Rotbart van Dainig
Gutsy had Jitter with O1 and ALSA when there was heavy load, like crypto disk
R/W.
That problem is gone with Hardy - CFS really manages to keep sound stable in
such sitations.

The interesting thing is that it only happens when minimizing/raising
windows (especially from the notification area, no matter using Metacity
or Compiz) - not when, say, looping the cover-flow task switcher plugin
of Compiz.

[Bug 205448] [NEW] Rename containing folder

2008-03-23 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cowbell

I love how Cowbell does everything that needs to be done after I get an
album: gets the tags right, renames the files and even downloads the
cover. But there is still one thing that is left to the user to sort
out: renaming the folder containing the album.

Is there any way that Cowbell could take care of that one, too?

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 205444] Re: bash completion inhibits ability to debug login scripts

2008-03-23 Thread era
The following quick patch attempts to solve two problems in the Gutsy
/etc/bash_completion:

  * Don't set -v or set +v if it's already set
  * If BASH_COMPLETION or BASH_COMPLETION_DIR are declared readonly, don't even
attempt to modify them

The latter would (if my quick analysis isn't completely up the creek)
cause scripts which sourced /etc/bash_completion to exit with an error
from within /etc/bash_completion instead of completing if
bash_completion had already been executed previously. This includes,
but is not limited to, /etc/skel/.bashrc and thus also anything which
includes .bashrc, such as /etc/skel/.profile

[Bug 156580] {SOLVED it}Re: No sound on HD A Intel; SigmaTel STAC9200; Gateway E100M

2008-03-23 Thread aby
Ok

I suffered for along time with my laptop not being able to have sound or
effects

I have intel HDA ICH7 and sigmatel

anyway i think this solution will probably help every one. cause now,
guess what!

I have sound i swear its higher, better and even more clearer than xp
or vista

I missed up ALSA trying to update it recompiling the new version.

so I suggest that u reinstall fresh copy of gusty if u did the same
things as I have done.

Now to start the solving the problem:

after getting a fresh copy of gusty installed

*** 1- made sure you get it updated: in the menu bar go to System
menu and - Administration - Update Manager

*** 2- click on check wait for it to load

*** 3- now click on install updates wait, it could take a long time
with slow internet connection and/or busy servers.

*** 4- reboot

*** 5- in the menu bar go to System menu and - Administration -
Software Sources

*** 6-now select the Updates tab

*** 7-In the update tab, you have to select all the first 4 options:

generally u will have only the first 2 selected:

you have to select the options Unsupported updates = the
third box

--- also select Pre-released updates = the forth box

 DO NOT CLICK REVERT

*** 8-Now click on close

*** 9-restart

*** 10-login

*** 11-connect to the internet

*** 12,a- When prompted to update do it

* if not prompted:

*** 12,b- in the menu bar go to System menu and - Administration
- Update Manager

*** 13-in the update manager window click on check wait for it to
reload the new software updates

*** 14- now click on install updates wait, it could take a long time
with slow internet connection and/or busy servers.

ALMOST DONE bare with me

*** 15-click close after getting update success

*** 16-go to System menu and - Preferences - Sound

*** 17- set:
A-the first 3 choice boxes to auto detect
B-the 4th to ALSA
C-the last one to intel HDA

*** 18-restart

 voalaa it works.

rock on Ubuntu

I have searched all over the net 4 a way to fix it yet this is the only
one that worked 4 me

Let me know if it works out 4 you
good luck

[Bug 129910] Re: Blank ttys when using vesafb (vga=xxx)

2008-03-23 Thread steven_shiau
Here tested it again with
http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04/ubuntu-8.04-beta-server-i386.iso
This is a release for server, I did not touch anything, no vga=xxx in boot
parameter, just booted it, when I saw the language to choose, I used
ctrl-alt-fx to switch them. If I switched more than 2 ttys, it's blank.
See ?
This is in ubuntu server release, same problem. I did not put any vga=xxx as
boot parameter. Just boot it, and got this problem.
Please, test it and you will see this is not a normal vesafb problem. I think
I'd better to report this as another new bug report.

[Bug 205341] Re: [Hardy] Kernel Update and Blank TTY

2008-03-23 Thread steven_shiau
Same here. I tested it again with
http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04/ubuntu-8.04-beta-server-i386.iso
I did not touch anything, i.e. I did not put vga=xxx in boot parameter, just
booted it, when I saw the language to choose, I used ctrl-alt-f[1-6] to switch
them. If I switched more than 2 ttys, it's blank.

[Bug 121540] Re: Where are you? SAIGON should be named Ho Chi Minh City

2008-03-23 Thread Jean Christophe André
FYI...

I've post a closing answer to this thread. Summary here:
1) no more ask for switch to Hanoi in tzdata ;
2) no more ask for Hanoi link in tzdata ;
3) confirmed the necessity to switch from Saigon to Ho_Chi_Minh.

It seems that 3) is being considered by tzdata maintainers, so we'll
probably close this bug soon.

As for 1) and 2) I've understood tzdata is not the right place to do
this kind of change so I'll suggest another way: propose multiple city
names for time zones at the user interface level, as we can see in some
other systems.

Or may be simply don't change anything and explain people what is the
time zone naming simple and only rule: the most populous city, and not
the capitol as we usually guess it should be...

Anyway, I also understand that this change is not Ubuntu specific and so
I'll eventually continue this work at the source in the Debian bug
report (linked at top of this page).

Thanks to everybody having participated in this, especially Martin Pitt
for the first step with upstream.
