[Bug 186250] Re: gedit unable to open text file
I installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron beta a couple of days ago. [Bug 203720] Re: Backlight on laptop not working
I believe my problem is now due to a bug in the 965 intel graphics driver. I tried it on a third machine, and it's working there. The difference is as follows. On the machine that fails, the long AOL SPF records are being returned malformed and pyspf or its underlying support is failing -- perhaps by design -- to trying again with TCP. On the machine that fails (ldc1042), I get: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ host -t txt aol.com ;; Warning: Message parser reports malformed message packet. ;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode. aol.com descriptive text v=spf1 ... ptr:mx.aol.com ?all aol.com descriptive text spf2.0/pra ... ptr:mx.aol.com ?all On the machine that works (gx110), I get: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ host -t txt aol.com ;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode. aol.com descriptive text spf2.0/pra ... ptr:mx.aol.com ?all aol.com descriptive text v=spf1 ... ptr:mx.aol.com ?all with no Warning: Message parser reports malformed message packet error. More importantly, I also get: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ python /usr/share/python-support/python-spf/spf.py 64.12.138.200 [EMAIL PROTECTED] imr-m06.mx.aol.com ('pass', 250, 'sender SPF authorized') So now I need to figure out why my Hostway dedicated server would be getting a malformed DNS response by UDP. [Bug 195782] Re: Users not automatically added to scanner group: No scanning functions of HP multi-function in Hardy
I wish I'd seen this report before. I emailed the desktop list about this problem - https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu- desktop/2008-March/001522.html ;-s By default, users do not have the privilege to Use scanners. Due to the rise of multifunction printers, this is a problem that should be fixed before the final release of 8.04. It was not until I gave myself the permission to Use scanners (under Users and Groups) that I was able to fully use the application P.S. Re: [Bug 203317] Re: gnome-panel needs a nice background image
U right, mine is a quck dirty. Generally we need a better solution with some more options regarding theme applied to WM and gnome-panel - today situation is more like a very quick solution [ to choose a file than set as BG for Gnome Panel - it can be a transparent PNG indeed ], we need something integrated with Themes Preferences, so the BG transparency could be set in some kind of individual mode - shared from Compiz OR from Metacity - depend on your WM engine. xl_cheese wrote: This method isn't very good. [Bug 205444] [NEW] bash completion inhibits ability to debug login scripts
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: bash /etc/bash_completion contains various magic which shut down all debugging output from the invoking shell. This is a problem if you are trying to run, say, your .profile under set -vx, for example. This is one of the few facilities we have for debugging log-in scripts. Granted, newbie users will not want to do this, but for those of us who do, this is pretty crippling. Please see some examples below. This is for Gutsy; sorry if this is already reported or even (gasp) fixed. I looked through open and closed bash and bash-completion bugs but the search facility isn't very helpful and there are too many bugs to go through manually. In the following transcript, I am trying to figure out why stuff in my spanking new .bash_profile is not taking. The stuff in /etc/bash_completion.d prevents me from even seeing what happens after /etc/bash_completion is invoked from my (standard, identical to /etc/skel) .profile, which means I can't really do what I'm trying to do. (Commenting out the sourcing of .profile seems to make my .bash_profile work, unsurprisingly; but that's a lucky coincidence, unless /etc/bash_completion is also responsible for this particular problem ... which as such would not surprise me much.) vnix$ cat .bash_profile . $HOME/.profile export LESS=-qMX vnix$ . .bash_profile vnix$ echo $LESS vnix$ # !? vnix$ set -vx echo -ne \033]0;[EMAIL PROTECTED]: ${PWD/$HOME/~}\007 ++ echo -ne '\033]0;[EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~\007' vnix$ . .bash_profile . .bash_profile + . .bash_profile . $HOME/.profile ++ . /home/era/.profile # ~/.profile: executed by the command interpreter for login shells. ... # enable programmable completion features (you don't need to enable # this, if it's already enabled in /etc/bash.bashrc and /etc/profile # sources /etc/bash.bashrc). if [ -f /etc/bash_completion ]; then . /etc/bash_completion fi '[' -f /etc/bash_completion ']' . /etc/bash_completion # bash_completion - programmable completion functions for bash 3.x # http://www.caliban.org/bash/index.shtml#completion ... # # RELEASE: 20060301 [ -n ${BASH_COMPLETION_DEBUG:-} ] set -v || set +v + '[' -n '' ']' + set +v ++ echo -ne '\033]0;[EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~\007' vnix$ # ...? vnix$ BASH_COMPLETION_DEBUG=pretty_please + BASH_COMPLETION_DEBUG=pretty_please ++ echo -ne '\033]0;[EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~\007' vnix$ set -vx set -vx + set -vx echo -ne \033]0;[EMAIL PROTECTED]: ${PWD/$HOME/~}\007 ++ echo -ne '\033]0;[EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~\007' vnix$ . .bash_profile ... # RELEASE: 20060301 [ -n ${BASH_COMPLETION_DEBUG:-} ] set -v || set +v + '[' -n pretty_please ']' + set -v # Alter the following to reflect the location of this file. # { # These declarations must go within braces in order to be able to silence # readonly variable errors. [Bug 205444] Re: bash completion inhibits ability to debug login scripts
Here's what the bash manual says about readonly assignments: If any of the assignments attempts to assign a value to a readonly variable, an error occurs, and the command exits with a non- zero status. So I guess that's the root cause of this problem. The following quick patch attempts to solve two problems in the Gutsy /etc/bash_completion: * Don't set -v or set +v if it's already set * If BASH_COMPLETION or BASH_COMPLETION_DIR are declared readonly, don't even attempt to modify them The latter would (if my quick analysis isn't completely up the creek) cause scripts which sourced /etc/bash_completion to exit with an error from within /etc/bash_completion instead of completing if bash_completion had already been executed previously. This includes, but is not limited to, /etc/skel/.bashrc and thus also anything which includes .bashrc, such as /etc/skel/.profile ** Attachment added: Patch against /etc/bash_completion http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12822152/bash_completion.diff -- bash completion inhibits ability to debug login scripts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/205444 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 156580] {SOLVED it}Re: No sound on HD A Intel; SigmaTel STAC9200; Gateway E100M
Ok I suffered for along time with my laptop not being able to have sound or effects I have intel HDA ICH7 and sigmatel anyway i think this solution will probably help every one. cause now, guess what! I have sound i swear its higher, better and even more clearer than xp or vista I missed up ALSA trying to update it recompiling the new version. so I suggest that u reinstall fresh copy of gusty if u did the same things as I have done. Now to start the solving the problem: after getting a fresh copy of gusty installed *** 1- made sure you get it updated: in the menu bar go to System menu and - Administration - Update Manager *** 2- click on check wait for it to load *** 3- now click on install updates wait, it could take a long time with slow internet connection and/or busy servers. *** 4- reboot *** 5- in the menu bar go to System menu and - Administration - Software Sources *** 6-now select the Updates tab *** 7-In the update tab, you have to select all the first 4 options: generally u will have only the first 2 selected: you have to select the options Unsupported updates = the third box --- also select Pre-released updates = the forth box DO NOT CLICK REVERT *** 8-Now click on close *** 9-restart *** 10-login *** 11-connect to the internet *** 12,a- When prompted to update do it * if not prompted: *** 12,b- in the menu bar go to System menu and - Administration - Update Manager *** 13-in the update manager window click on check wait for it to reload the new software updates *** 14- now click on install updates wait, it could take a long time with slow internet connection and/or busy servers. ALMOST DONE bare with me *** 15-click close after getting update success *** 16-go to System menu and - Preferences - Sound *** 17- set: A-the first 3 choice boxes to auto detect B-the 4th to ALSA C-the last one to intel HDA *** 18-restart voalaa it works. rock on Ubuntu I have searched all over the net 4 a way to fix it yet this is the only one that worked 4 me Let me know if it works out 4 you good luck -- No sound on HDA Intel;SigmaTel STAC9200; Gateway E100M https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156580 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 129910] Re: Blank ttys when using vesafb (vga=xxx)
Here tested it again with http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04/ubuntu-8.04-beta-server-i386.iso This is a release for server, I did not touch anything, no vga=xxx in boot parameter, just booted it, when I saw the language to choose, I used ctrl-alt-fx to switch them. If I switched more than 2 ttys, it's blank. See ? This is in ubuntu server release, same problem. I did not put any vga=xxx as boot parameter. Just boot it, and got this problem. Please, test it and you will see this is not a normal vesafb problem. I think I'd better to report this as another new bug report. -- Blank ttys when using vesafb (vga=xxx) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129910 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 121540] Re: Where are you? SAIGON should be named Ho Chi Minh City
FYI... I've post a closing answer to this thread. Summary here: 1) no more ask for switch to Hanoi in tzdata ; 2) no more ask for Hanoi link in tzdata ; 3) confirmed the necessity to switch from Saigon to Ho_Chi_Minh. It seems that 3) is being considered by tzdata maintainers, so we'll probably close this bug soon. As for 1) and 2) I've understood tzdata is not the right place to do this kind of change so I'll suggest another way: propose multiple city names for time zones at the user interface level, as we can see in some other systems. Or may be simply don't change anything and explain people what is the time zone naming simple and only rule: the most populous city, and not the capitol as we usually guess it should be... Anyway, I also understand that this change is not Ubuntu specific and so I'll eventually continue this work at the source in the Debian bug report (linked at top of this page). Thanks to everybody having participated in this, especially Martin Pitt for the first step with upstream. -- Where are you?
