I used shred -tool to zero first 16 gigabytes of my disk, rebooted from Hardy 8.04 beta -live cd and made a new installation. This time everything went as I supposed, manual partitioning was possible. So it might be just the drive. Anyway I could not reproduce this anymore.
One thing comes to my mind.
