[Bug 207881] Re: [Gutsy, Hardy] Black screen with mouse pointer on i830, intel driver
Weird. But I've seen where doing a VT switch can bring a system back to sanity. Thanks for attaching your Xorg.0.log. It looks like your hardware is: Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] rev 3 [chip 8086,3577 card 1179,ff00] No other obvious errors jump out though. But the 830 is a pretty old chipset. We have seen a lot of issues with i8xx chips when using the new -intel driver, and have worked with Intel to fix a lot of them, particularly i855; it wouldn't surprise me that there is additional work to be done for the old i830. Fwiw, we're still including the i810 driver in Hardy since we know some old chips like yours work better with it than with intel; however we plan to deprecate i810 in Intrepid so would like to help you solve the issue so you can use intel going forward. The first step is to test some newer versions of intel. I've built a handful of git snapshots from upstream for you to try out: http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/bisect/ Try the newest version at the top of the page, and maybe one or two other picked at random. If you find it does not solve it, then the next step would be to file this bug upstream. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- [Gutsy, Hardy] Black screen with mouse pointer on i830, intel driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/207881 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 205854] Re: Progress bar flickers during redraw
I tested it again after the update and it still flickers. Unfortunately I do not have a camera to record a video with. To be a little more descriptive, the orange of the progress bar will occasionally flash black. By the way, I have an intel x3100 graphics chip. Others might not be seeing the flicker because vsync works with their graphics chip and the frame is drawn during the screen refresh. The theme shouldn't have to rely on this, though, and should only redraw what is necessary. [Bug 205979] Re: xserver crash on exit in CloseDownDevices and SrvXkbFreeGeomRows
Pascal, excellent, thanks for getting the backtrace and testing with another keyboard, this has really narrowed down the issue. So, looking at the backtrace I see what's going on: _XkbFreeGeomNonLeafElems(...) { ... if (freeFunc) { ptr= *elems; ptr+= first*elem_sz; for (i=0;icount;i++) { (*freeFunc)(ptr); ptr+= elem_sz; } } ptr is not checked for being NULL, and is getting passed to freeFunc() (a function pointer to _XkbClearRow): #3 0x081aa85c in _XkbClearRow (row_in=0x0) at ../../xkb/XKBGAlloc.c:342 Then _XkbClearRow tries dereferencing the NULL pointer: static void _XkbClearRow(char *row_in) { XkbRowPtr row= (XkbRowPtr)row_in; if (row-keys!=NULL) XkbFreeGeomKeys(row,0,row-num_keys,True); return; } I bet that call should be something like: if (row row-keys!=NULL) The code doesn't seem to be fixed in current git either, near as I can tell. [Bug 204990] Re: X does not start at all on Intel 945GM/GMS
Hi Wolfgang, I've got several more things to try. First, though, please attach your Xorg.0.log file. This is required for all Xorg bug reports and has a ton of useful info needed in doing further troubleshooting. Second, you mention that things worked properly in Gutsy, which is a *very* strong clue. It means that some change between the Gutsy -intel and Hardy introduced the problem. So the next step is to narrow down on when that change happened. Since I imagine you probably don't want to manually compile video drivers, I've pre-built a whole series of them for you to test: http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/bisect/ This is a pretty new thing I put together recently, and hasn't been thoroughly tested, so if you have questions or find things work weird, please let me know and I'll investigate. I would recommend starting by testing the r866ae887 .deb and verify the issue still exists there, and then test rff5c9436 and verify it is missing there. If that's the case, then start bisecting - pick a version halfway between Gutsy and Hardy and see how that works; if it works, then pick one half way between it and Hardy, otherwise pick one half way between it and Gutsy. Repeat until you have bracketed the versions where the problem first started. Third, it might also be useful to capture a backtrace from one of the lockups. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXorg for directions on doing this. Typically you'd ssh into the machine and connect gdb to it and get a 'backtrace full'. Since this is a lockup, then try killing the server and get another backtrace. Unfortunately from what I've seen from others with this lockup, the backtraces don't get much useful info, but it might help in determining if it's the same issue as what others are seeing. Thanks, and good luck. -- X does not start at all on Intel 945GM/GMS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204990 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 184964] Re: Firefox API buggy, can cause crash in Firefox
I think my original report has been misunderstood. First, I can not tell plugin causes crashes, and it is not easily reproducible. Sometimes firefox runs up to a week, frequenly used, sometimes I have to restart it several times a day. Usually it crashes when I'm not using it. A reasonable way to repeat this, could be to take some plugin, modify it to e.g. address a nul pointer, so the plugin fails to 100 %. If the API is working OK, firefox should let the faulty plugin die, but not get affected in any other way. The firefox I'm running most of the time is currently 1.5.0.13pre (dapper LTS). There may be other errors in firefox causing it to crash, to get rid of the possibility to crash on failing plugins is a first step towards a stable browser. [Bug 206999] Re: [Hardy beta] External screen goes suddenly blue with Intel 945GM
Hmm, these happens randomly and rarely bugs are extremely hard to troubleshoot (as you can imagine). Unfortunately the Xorg.0.log.old didn't have a backtrace, but thanks for digging it up. Given how infrequently you see the issue, it's not unlikely that some other fix will resolve it before you see it again. However, if that doesn't come to pass, and you do run into the bug again, please take the opportunity to collect a backtrace. There are directions for doing this at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXorg. For now, just make sure to have the debug versions of -intel and xserver installed, so when you collect the backtrace it'll have all the important info. With a good backtrace in hand, we can probably do some analysis to figure out why it crashed, and hopefully figure out a patch. [Bug 204655] Re: Virtual consoles broken in the Alternate Installer
Metoo. VGA is an NVidia Quadro4 980 XGL. I could also reproduce it with a Geforce 8400M GS. Platform is amd64 (Hardy). This seems to be a problem of linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic. [Bug 195843] Re: INTEL_BATCH=1 should be enabled per default for Intel graphic hardware
For Intrepid we're going to be getting the nice TTM enabled stuff, with the properly implemented batch buffer equivalent. This INTEL_BATCH=1 is really experimental code and not suitable for a release, especially not an LTS. So I'm going to close this as a WONTFIX. We'll be getting the fully baked version in Intrepid. Of course, users are more than welcome to turn this on locally for the speed benefits, but the Ubuntu Xorg team will NOT be supporting such configurations - so if you have instabilities or other issues while using INTEL_BATCH=1, please turn it off and reproduce the issue without it, before reporting a bug. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Won't Fix -- INTEL_BATCH=1 should be enabled per default for Intel graphic hardware https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195843 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'd say it is not reproducible always, at least not from my experience. But, as said, files seem to disappear some times when I do cut/paste to and from USB flash drives. I am sorry if the information I have provided is not sufficient to help solving the issue. Hmm. Actually I could try to reproduce the problem by moving files, though... Later, then. [Bug 204497] Re: white screen of death after hibernate in hardy
Great, yeah these intermittent bugs can be troublesome to reproduce. Also make sure to install debug packages for xserver and the -intel driver, so that when you collect the backtrace it'll have all the necessary information. It's not impossible that some other fix in the meantime will make this go away. If we don't hear back from you within a few months, we'll assume that's what happened and we'll close out the bug. -- white screen of death after hibernate in hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204497 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 203992] Re: compiz problems with 3D application
I can confirm this. It makes googleearth very difficult to use. For example the tip of day becomes hidden behind the 3D portion of the window. It appears and disappears with movements of the mouse. Turning desktop effects off causes things to return to normal. I'm running hardy beta with all updates applied. I have an Intel display controller: 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) See attached screenshot. ** Attachment added: Screenshot-Google Earth.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12960474/Screenshot-Google%20Earth.png -- compiz problems with 3D application https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203992 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
